Job Description and Responsibilities
This position's primary responsibility is to continuously improve the School of Natural Resources and Environment's public-facing Web presence (www.snre.umich.edu), as well as its intranet. This position contributes to the development of school marketing and communications strategies across the web; leads the development of specific goals and development plans for the school web sites; and is responsible for the overall development and execution of the school's web presence -- including design, technical features and interactivity, and content management.
The Web Designer/Administrator will work collaboratively, across the organization and with external vendors to advance the school's web presence.
This position will carry out a wide-ranging set of duties and tasks for the web, including:
- Project management and coordination of web projects
- Using web analytics to inform plans and development priorities for the site
- Assisting in the execution of new online initiatives incorporating audio, video and other new media types; RSS feeds, podcasts, and other delivery mechanisms
- Improving existing site designs for layout, graphics, etc., and developing innovative new designs
- Updating and improving site navigation and information architecture
- Maintaining and developing the functional features of our sites, particularly in the context of our Drupal-based public-facing web site
- Managing content: posting content; editing content contributed by others; identifying and prioritizing content to be revised
- Providing training and consultation to school personnel as it relates to the web and especially the content management system
- Serving as the main point of contact for contractors, and supervising temporary/student staff who may be brought in to support web development
Job Requirements
- BA/BS and three to five years relevant work experience, or equivalent
- Demonstrated mastery of web design foundations including XHTML and CSS
- Substantial knowledge of scripting languages for the web; PHP and JavaScript preferred
- Experience with web content management systems
- Experience working in Unix/Apache web hosting environments
- Knowledge and experience in established best practices for web authoring, standards compliance and accessibility; testing methodologies; browser compatibility
- Knowledge of emerging web trends, technologies and practices
- A portfolio that demonstrates strong creative work in graphic design and web development
- Demonstrated proficiency with web authoring and media authoring tools such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Flash
- Demonstrated project management skills; ability to manage multiple short- and long-term projects
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally
Additional Preferred Skills/Knowledge
- Experience in developing web sites with the Drupal content management system
- Demonstrated history of development of Drupal modules and contributions to Drupal open source communities
- Experience creating and packaging audio, video, and other media for the web, for instance encoding video for Flash, Quicktime, Windows Media, or Real formats
