What about a way to complement the technology of community building with a sort of mechanical turk or volunteer moderators. The service could be facillitated by drupal but leveraged by users of the tech.

That's very true. It appears to me that Knight has decided (for now) that Drupal is the developing platform for new kinds of community journalism, and wants to help make it work for everyone.

The public square of the 21st century.

Matthew and Dan are right. Knight wants to help the public have a voice in the public square of the 21st century, the digital square. To do that Knight wants to help open-source software developers create new platforms that are easy to use by anyone, even those citizens who know little or nothing about technology, enabling them to discuss what happens in their communities, share ideas and seek solutions to the challenges their communities might be facing. These new platforms will hopefully fill the information needs of communities in a democracy, allowing citizens to receive the news and information they need to lead informed lives. One of the reasons Drupal is so special, is that it is has the support of an engaged community that shares these same ideas.
