Drupal, 2008 Elections, Obama and you!

Folks,

I am currently working on a couple of volunteer projects related to the elections, drupal and Obama. If you are interested in putting your skills to use in this regard please give me a shout (privately) asap.

I'm looking for the following -

Drupal admin and light system admin

Light Drupal programming and themeing

Graphic design (I need a simple banner and some other graphical elements very quickly)

This is ideal for either:

a) Newbies who have a lot of time, desire and are looking for a way to take part in this historic election and would like to build up their skill sets/resumes

and/or

b) More experienced people who have the chops and would like to take on some targeted tasks and help bring some real change to the country.

Again please contact me privately (dan@drob.org).

I realize that not everyone who reads this will be an Obama supporter - that's cool! :)

Regards,

Dan

Systems Administrator | Democracy Now!

Forwarding this really cool opportunity to join the Democracy Now! team in New York. If you're a Linux Systems Admin with Drupal experience, this sounds like a fantastic opportunity to join a driven team of smart, passionate people working for justice. One of the responsibilities would be to develop new internal and public websites for them: sounds like Drupal would be a great fit!

Here's the info. It was taken from http://www.democracynow.org/about/jobs#sysadmin

============================================================

Immediate opening for full-time Systems Administrator

Democracy Now! is a daily, non-profit, national, independent news hour based in New York City. Our public website, which is is visited by tens of thousands of users daily, features the news hour every day in a variety of video, audio, and transcript formats, and also features a store selling copies of the program. Internally, we maintain a heterogeneous network of client and server computers to process, store, and record the show and its components and to support our general office and distribution operations. Democracy Now! is hiring a full-time Systems Administrator with extensive Linux experience to maintain, support, and extend these systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Implement, maintain, and monitor the computer network and internal servers, including our internet connection, firewall, and shared printer resources.

Provide desktop technical support to staff and volunteers, primarily on an Apple OS X platform.

Coordinate with external consultants and service providers who are responsible for some aspects of our technical operations.

Architect and, where practical, develop web sites and applications for public and internal use.

Research and suggest cost effective products and solutions which may improve organizational workflow.

QUALIFICATIONS

As a small organization with limited IT staff but diverse technological needs, we seek to hire someone who can work with a wide variety of technologies and quickly learn new technologies.

Experience configuring and maintaining GNU/Linux servers and an ability to create and maintain bash shell scripts are essential. The ideal candidate will also have experience with some or all of the following technologies: Free Software media processing tools including ffmpeg, mencoder, sox, dvgrab, and MP4Box; programming languages including Perl, Ruby on Rails, and Python; Apple OS X and Microsoft Windows desktop and application support, ideally including Final Cut Pro and Filemaker Pro; version-control systems such as Subversion and git; firewall maintenance with OpenBSD and pf; and web technologies including HTML, CSS, and XML.

Also essential are the abilities to manage several simultaneous projects and to research, select, and integrate new technologies. Experience in a non-profit or media environment is preferred, as is an interest in independent media and non-commercial television.

This is a full-time New York City-based position with benefits and salary based on experience. Democracy Now! is an Equal Opportunity Employer that actively recruits women, people of color, persons with disabilities, and persons with diverse gender and sexual identities.

To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter (PDF or plain text formats only) to job (at) democracynow (dot) org with “Systems Administrator” as the subject. No phone calls.

Geo module is minimally functional in D6

I've had some time and some funding, so I've roughed in my proof of concept on a D6 version of Geo. In traditional geek style, the most informative descriptions are in my commit messages: http://drupal.org/project/cvs/147736

Basically, my goal is to demystify "geospatial", while integrating it as much as possible within Drupal. It needn't be an academic exercise to get this data working properly, so I've tried to keep things simple. The goals/implementation do the following:

1) Provide an API module, which makes available some functions such as geo_db_add_field, and others. It also keeps track of the capabilities of the various installed backends, and provides some Views 2 handlers.

2) Provide CCK fields that can contain geospatial data. The use case here would be to store user-generated data such as points ( e.g. addresses ), lines ( e.g. an uploaded track ), or polygons ( e.g. a hand-drawn shape ). I have rearchitected this from the original implementation so that it now works closely with CCK itself. Basically, you let CCK create your field's table, and then we sneak in and add a geospatial column.

3) Import externally-provided shape data, and make it work in harmony with Drupal's existing data. I wrote an import utility this week so that you can download zip files from any source, and upload them to your Drupal site (!).

4) Using the imported data: You can create CCK fields that match a name/value pair from the column, for example "state id/state name", and users can add data using select lists. This key is then used to link your content to the imported geospatial data, so that your queries can use Contains, Within, etc. functionality.

While somewhat crufty and fallible, this code is all pretty much in working order. I'm working on this project in conjunction with http://drupal.org/project/votesmart , and using Geo to find district- and precinct-level data based on a user's address. I can import legislative district data from census.gov, automagically create content types for candidates using Vote Smart, assign them a district ( e.g. 61A ), and then search for representatives using Views filters.

As long as you're cool with typing "POINT(-94.14796237931 46.438258841379)" into your exposed filters, it's working pretty well ;)

I'm seeking input and developer-level feedback. It's by no means ready for end users, but I'm interested in extra pairs of eyes at this point.

Thanks, see you next week!

Allie

Media Player with Dynamic Logo!

Made some progress last night with the Drupal Media Player that I blogged about recently. Dynamic logos!

You have to go to my blog to see the action.

This was created with an hour of tweaking the OpenLaszlo XML, and then pasting the following into this node:
print theme('media_player_player', 'http://spindowners.com/files.dm/videos/20051210-w50s.flv', array('logo' => '/sites/aaronwinborn.com/files/my-logo.png');

Couldn't be simpler! I see a dev release as soon as we have an icon for the play button!

Of course, playlists and the like will take more. We've talked about including several players, including a light-weight and one with all the bells & whistles, and have the module call the proper one according to passed parameters.

BabelUp: a community for social change

www.babelup.com

BabelUp is a social network for social activism. That is, it's a fun community to hang out in with friends and discuss global issues. BabelUp hosts forums, user blogs, image galleries, real-time chatting, groups, calendars, and lots of other features you'd expect to find in a well-designed (hopefully) social network.

The goal of BabelUp is to attract young people who wouldn't ordinarily be interested in social activism. BabelUp aims to do this through its highly interactive website and encouraging community. Hopefully, users will join for the social features on the recommendation of their friends and will become more engaged in activism as they spend more time on the site.

I myself am a student activist. I started BabelUp as an "action plan" developed at a summer program at Brown University last year; BabelUp was my first web design project. I really started working on the site around late September and finished in late January; the site was live in "Beta" for a few months before I rebuilt it entirely in mid-June. I've learned a lot about Drupal and found that I really enjoy web design in addition to the obvious feel-good incentive.

BabelUp is solidly designed with a lot of custom PHP (mostly in blocks and for other visual reasons - the functionality Drupal modules provide is excellent). I think it serves as a good example of both how Drupal can be used to build social networks as well as of how Drupal can be used for social good.

I hope you like the site and I'm happy to hear any feedback or answer any questions you have. Of course some of the more complex features you usually see in a social network require you to join in order to see them (like the Facebook-style user statuses), but I hope that you'll find the site worthwhile enough to join and take a serious look. If you have a favorite cause, joining can help you raise awareness; if you just like to talk politics, environment, etc., then BabelUp is also the place for you.

www.babelup.com

Drupal'n'Go Call For Projects and Participants

<

div class="content clear-block">

A community effort to help a NGO get some ass-kicking internet presence — October 4th and 5th, 2008 — Paris, La Cantine Numérique

On the first weekend of October 2008, in only 2 days, the Drupal French Community will build a complete and live website for a selected NGO. All free. Free as in free beer, and free as in free speech.

What’s in it for the selected NGO?

You do not have an internet presence? You have a very lousy one? You want to to do a specific incredibly cool thing on the web?

Please register on the main Drupal n’Go web site (http://www.drupalngo.org/user/register). Then visit http://www.drupalngo.org/en/node/add/applications to fill in the project application form.

Both small and large NGOs can apply. The community will choose a single NGO project.

During the two days of the event we will build for you the most awesome, buzzwordy plateform imaginable, taking care of all aspects and all related costs of such an endeavor.

Unlike traditional web projects, having detailed specifications is not necessary. Our volunteers will help you do that.

Projects the community feels it can really contribute to — not only regarding the implementation but also regarding imagining the solutions, the design and the strategy — will probably get more attention.

And as Drupal is a free and open source software, with a strong ecosystem, the NGO will have total control on its website: no strings attached, no proprietary software to update, and a clear path of evolution.

The registration process ends on September 10th, 2008. The selected NGO will be announced on September 15th, 2008.

Fill in the form on drupalngo.org today, and grab a chance to get the best website money could not buy!

What’s in it for the participants?

As participants we will have developers (both newbies and hard core rockstars), project managers, themers, visual designers, journalists (to cover the event and help editing), information architects, sysadmins, and of course members of the NGO that will be the main stakeholders of the project and anyone else that is willing to come and can give us a hand.

The main idea being that on the evening of the second day, the site will go live to the amazement and pleasure of all :-)

Participants will be able to learn to know each other better, learn how incredibly fast Drupal is when it comes to building websites, improve their skills and exchange on best practices while providing real value to a good cause.

If you want to participate, we invite you to register on the Drupal n’Go web site: http://www.drupalngo.org. There you will be able to fill in the domain in which you are most interested in contributing.

Wait! Can it work? In only 2 days?

Thanks to the agility of Drupal and the large range of talents gathered in the same place at the same moment, yes, it will work.

Intensive coding session on a specific project has always been an essential part of the Drupal community (they are called ‘Code Sprints’) and the Open Source community as a whole. We want to extend this to the full range of the webdesign process, because Drupal alone is tooooo easy!

Even better: we have a really, really good plan.

So what’s the plan?

The basic schedule of the two days will be:

Day One: on Saturday, the first half of the day will be a “normal” DrupalCamp — though there will already be sessions preparing for the later effort. At least two sessions will demonstrate how to work with a big team in a smooth and collaborative way with an introduction to using an SCM and writing issue tickets.

The afternoon will be dedicated to the preparation of the work on the website. Groups will discuss and prepare the information architecture, some of the technical choices, content, functionalities and so on. Also our team will solve any remaining infrastructure questions — even if most will be prepared beforehand.

Day Two: On Sunday most of the “concrete work” will be done. Graphic designers will do their share. Journalists will interview and write awesome pieces. Developers will develop. Integrators will integrate… and project managers will keep us on rhythm.

A lot of preparation work will be done beforehand to ensure we can start working quickly and effectively. There will be integration and testing servers ready, a dedicated code repository and issue tracker, even a live CD with a preconfigured development environment.

But wait, there is even more!

We won’t stop there: we also have a plan for the aftermath. A hosting company (Bearstech) will donate web hosting, there will be training sessions offered to the NGO after the event, and (yet to be determined exactly) community based support for project.

We already have some sponsors and will be calling for more.

Please vote here:
http://ideablob.com/ideas/1247-The-Collaboration-Foundation-C

About The Collaboration Foundation
The Collaboration Foundation is a grassroots non-profit arts organization that grew from The 1 Second Film project (currently runs on Drupal). The 1 Second Film has over 10,000 participants in 59 countries. Apple recently donated over $25K in computers to support the project. Our goal is to build an innovative platform for global collaborative art and social-change on a scale only possible when people work together. Our Board of Directors includes Albert Maysles, Juli Taymor, Stephen Nemeth, and Ben Goldhirsh. For more info, please visit www.collaborationfoundation.org

What We Will do With the $10K
If we win the $10K grant, funds will be used to build a non-profit dynamic Drupal site that will provide a global community of participants with free tools to connect, create, and collaborate. Preview the design for our new site here: http://collaborationfoundation.org/images/web/cf_home.jpg

Media Code Sprint (Top 3 Goals)

The Media Code Sprint is underway! Here's a cross-post from my blog detailing the goals of this sprint, which runs through Saturday. We need your help!

Andrew Morton (drewish), Darrel O'Pry (dopry, remotely), and I are heading up a Media Code Sprint in Portland this week! Come help, in person or remotely, if you're interested in multimedia and Drupal! It has now officially started, and as I've volunteered to help keep folks updated, here goes...

First the reasons.

Number One: Better Media Handling in Core

Dries conducted a survey prior to his State of Drupal presentation at Boston Drupalcon 2008, and number one on the top ten (or 11) list of what would make THE KILLER DRUPAL 7 Release was "Better media handling".

Let me repeat that. Better media handling.

People have done really amazing stuff in contrib, but it is difficult (if not impossible in many cases) for developers to coordinate the use of files, as there is no good means for file handling in the core of Drupal. Thus, we have several dozen (or more) media modules doing some small part, or even duplicating functionality, sometimes out of necessity.

We need (better) media and file handling in Drupal core. In particular, there has been a patch for a hook_file in the queue for over a year, which has been in the Patch Spotlight (for the second time, no less) since May! (And has been RTBC several times during that process...) Come on folks.

One of the powers of Drupal is its system of hooks. We have hooks to modify nodes, to notify changes to user objects, to alter nearly any data (such as forms and menus). Noticeably absent is a consistent handling for files or any sort of notification. We need hook_file.

So goal Number One: get media handling in core. The means? Add hook_file and make files into a 1st class Drupal object. We'll be creating a test suite for functionality in the hook_file patch to validate it and "grease the wheels" to get it committed.

The other goals of this sprint pale in comparison to the first in utility, but are still highly desirable and worthwhile.

Number Two: Refactor File Functionality in Core

As an extension to the first goal, there is a lot of inconsistency with how Drupal currently handles files. For instance, in some areas a function may return an object, and in others a string. Additionally, some functions are misnamed, or try to do too much to be useful as a file API.

Some specific examples: for what it does, file_check_directory may be better suited as something like file_check_writable, or maybe even split into that and file_check_make_writable. Also, for instance, file_scan_directory needs to return file objects, rather than the current associative array (keyed on the provided key) of objects with "path", "basename", and "name" members corresponding to the matching files. (The function does what it needs to, but the returned objects have keys not corresponding to anything else used in core.)

So goal Number Two: refactor file functionality in core. The means? Go through and check for (and fix!) existing file functionality for documentation and consistency.

Number Three: Spruce up Existing Contributed Media Modules

There are several much needed multimedia modules that have not yet been upgraded to Drupal 6 (or which are still in heavy progress). This includes (but is not limited to) Image Field, Image API, and Embedded Media Field. Additionally, some major improvements can be made, both to these, and to other essentials, such as the Image module, such as creating a migration path from Image to Image Field (once that module is stable).

So goal Number Three: spruce up existing contributed media modules. The means? Get these modules upgraded!

I want to recognize the valiant and heroic efforts made by everyone to date, as fortunately, there has already been significant progress on all these fronts. That makes our job (relatively) easy. In some respects, we just need to finish up the jobs that have already been started.

Thus, drewish declared this week the Media Code Sprint!

We need your help. If you are a developer, or want to be a developer, jump on in! If you aren't ready to develop, or consider yourself too new for that, you can still help test patches and functionality. Jump on in! And please, even if you don't know how to apply a patch, you can still help with documentation and other small (but important) tasks. Jump on in!

If you're in Portland, You Have No Excuse®. If not, you can jump into #drupal in IRC any time you're available.

The official dates for the sprint are today (Wednesday July 23, 2008) through Saturday (the 26th). We'll be online and working most of that time. I'll make sure we continue to post progress as the week develops.

Of course, as is the wonderful nature of Drupal, this is an ongoing process. Even if we achieve our stated goals, there will always be more.

Thanks,
Aaron Winborn

Bounty: advanced FAPI | matslats.net

I'm building a community currency trading module and I've spent several days now wrestling with Form API in 6.x. I have no income from this but I need this form built for me, so I'm offering a bounty of $200.

My modules defines a node-type called transaction which consists of buyerID, sellerID, quantity, description of trade and other fields. Here is the user story I am trying to achieve.

User goes to the page of the person he wants to trade with, where there is a 'new transaction' block. This means the system already knows both uids.

User fills in the transaction details, which are quantity, description, and the direction of the trade. Presses submit.

User now sees a confirmation with buttons to confirm or go back. The system now knows which is the buyer and which the seller, ready to put those ids in the appropriate db fields. If the user is a buyer he get's an additional option to grade the transaction.

Now when the form is submitted it gets written to the database.

I'm sure it's not so hard. To have a look at the project so far, see http://bazaar.matslats.net

I'll give you my module so far, and be available to clarify while you work. There will be no feature creep, no theming, no documentation. Most of the code is already there, this just requires a better understanding of FAPI than I can muster.

Matthew

We're looking for a benevolent code-shredder who can help run an international campaign to stop the climate crisis. Our small and nimble crew coordinate 350.org, a new internationalized platform to link up the pieces of the growing global movement to stop the climate crisis. We're a young team that moves quickly, and we seek an engineer who can match us in enthusiasm, efficiency, and dedication.

We want to push the boundaries of what's possible with web-based activism, to develop and implement tools that can facilitate the creation a new kind of global movement: wired, diverse, mobile, visionary , and above all, effective.

A good sense of design aesthetics and usability

Experience with internationalization and localization.

Ability to work both collaboratively and independently

Capacity to multi-task and work nimbly, balancing multiple priorities and interruptions

Responsibilities include:

Creating elegant and efficient programming solutions that are flexible and forward-compatible

Configuring servers and databases

We estimate this will be a full-time position through the end of the year, with strong potential for continued full-time or part-time work depending on the status of the campaign. Work begins ASAP.

TO APPLY
Send jon@350.org a cover letter, résumé, contact information for three references, and links to examples of your work along with a description of your contribution to each example linked. Compensation commensurate with experience.

Drupal for NGOs (London - July 2008)

Group Blogging from Democratic Convention

I thought some of the folks here might be interested in a project we're working on - it's called Rootswire - http://www.rootswire.org - and is an aggregation of different political and place blogs. Our first big effort is to build a group site for all of the bloggers covering the Democratic convention. The site is up in beta right now (yeah, yeah, I know - it needs a lot of theming love) and we're currently working on the mechanical aspects of it, and getting bloggers on-board. It's all Drupal, and we're using feedapi and the calais module to import the feeds and automatically tag them.

Come on over and take a look - and if you know anyone who is blogging from the Democratic Convention, send them my way.

Volunteer Developers, Designers and Contributors | OneWorldWiki

Hi all,

We are seeking volunteers to help design, develop and contribute content to a new online community - OneWorldWiki. People at any skill level or interest in Drupal are welcome - designers, developers, themers, or simply people who want to make a difference.

The "wiki" in OneWorldWiki means mass collaboration. Originally, we started using Mediawiki but found it too limiting so we're now using the wonderful world of Drupal.

OneWorldWiki is developing an Online Community based around Environmental, Political and Social Issues. It will combine curated and user-generated content and applications. Rather than going to multiple websites and other sources for information and resources about particular issues and organizations, users can go to one Online Community that unites all of this information, applications and resources under one roof.

OneWorldWiki is conceived of as a means for people to:
• Educate themselves and educate others about Political, Social and Environmental Issues and Causes
• Take action to make the world a better place for ourselves and for future generations
• Create communities by connecting with other like-minded people and organizations
• Discover ways to purchase products and services produced and distributed in an ethical and green manner
• Discover ways to live our everyday lives which take into account ethics, sustainability and the environment
• Find ways to become inspired and reclaim enthusiasm, passion and joy, by examining practices that integrate activism consciously and joyfully into a well-balanced life
• Exchange and implement socially-responsible and sustainable business and organizational practices and resources

The primary mission of OneWorldWiki is to promote human rights, social, economic, and environmental justice and sustainability by educating, engaging, connecting, and empowering people around the world. The major components of OneWorldWiki are:
• OneWorldWiki Resources – Resources—articles, books, videos, etc.—about Political, Social and Environmental Issues
• OneWorldWiki Action – Ways to take action to make the world a better place for ourselves and for future generations
• OneWorldWiki Network - Connect with other people and organizations about the issues that we care about
• OneWorldWiki Ethical Shopping – Guide to ethical and environmentally-friendly products and services
• OneWorldWiki Ethical Living - Everyday ways to live which take into account ethics, sustainability and environment
• OneWorldWiki Inspiration - Ways to inspire us & keep us committed to making the world a better place
• OneWorldWiki Sustainable Business - Socially-responsible and sustainable business practices and resources
• OneWorldWiki CleanTech - Guide to Clean Technology and Renewable Energy

Please let me if you're interested in getting involved in any way, shape or form.

Peace and good will,
David Comfort

Contract Programmer | National Novel Writing Month/The Office of Letters and Light

About Us

The Office of Letters and Light is an Oakland-based nonprofit that puts on the world's largest creative writing events. All our events are free, and we're best known for organizing National Novel Writing Month (www.NaNoWriMo.org), a hands-on novel writing escapade for which 100,000 kids and adults bash out books every November. Participants chart their progress on our websites, attend local write-ins, and receive encouragement from staff and email pep talks from such authors as Neil Gaiman, Garth Nix, and Tom Robbins.

About the Job

We're looking for Drupal programmers to help us add new features to existing modules, and develop integrations between modules. We are also looking for a themer to complete the redesign of one of our sites.

Our projects this summer include work extending

Forums

Organic Groups

Private Message

Profiles-as-nodes

Custom Themes

Work begins in late June, with all work due mid-August. Wherever possible, we expect code developed for OLL to be contributed back to Drupal or the appropriate contrib module.

How to Apply

If you are interested in working with us, please send a cover letter with some background about yourself and your work to: jobs@lettersandlight.org. We'll get back to you with specs for particular projects in need of programmers.

NYC Tech4Good: Moving Towards Open Source Advocacy

Sorry for the short notice, but tonight's meetup should be a good one of NYC Tech4Good should be of interest to Drupalistsas and open source folks.

WHEN: TODAY, JUNE 18 at 7pm at the Oxfam International Offices.
RSVP: Click "Signup" link below

WHERE:
Women and Development Organisation's offices (WEDO)/Oxfam
Please bring a couple bucks to help with refreshments

WHAT:
Massive self-organizing volunteer communities are developing the best software in the world, but why aren't we seeing this same drive when it comes to online campaigns? While volunteers are giving millions of hours to Firefox, Drupal, Joomla and more, they aren't giving the same efforts to nonprofit endeavors. The most common reason: Nobody asked.

With a few notable exceptions, organizations are not tapping the the web to harness the power of volunteers. Organizations need to learn from the success of the OS model and change how they build campaigns. Campaigning needs to become more collaborative and transparent.

With our special guests we will discuss the lessons from Open Source software development that could be used to create powerful on and offline campaigns. We will include some specific examples and needs, so be ready to get your hands dirty, because this time YOU WILL BE ASKED.

WHO:
YOU
Guests:
Karina Brisby, E-campaigns Director for Oxfam: Karina will discuss their upcoming projects and how other organizations and volunteers can collaborate as well as ask for the groups input on a specific project.

Joshua Wiese, Online Director for EveryHumanHasRights.org, TheElders.org: Josh will talk about the EHH campaign to teach people about everyone's rights under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as we approach the 60th anniversary of the document in December. EHH is using online and mobile tools to invite individuals to sign the UDHR.

Danny Moldovan, VP Strategy and Communications for Change.org: Change.org is a social network dedicated to empowering individuals to create the change they want to see in the world.

P.S. There will be Beer.

supportunitedway.org case study

This is a writeup of how and why United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley chose Drupal for the redesign of supportunitedway.org. I'll talk about our history with Drupal, how we structured the new site, which modules we used, and how we migrated data from our old site.

History

About a year ago, United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley decided our web presence needed some love. We had already used Drupal for a few projects such as the CFC Eastern Massachusetts campaign and mycaringclub.org, and between the success of those projects and the familiarity we gained with Drupal in doing them, we decided to use Drupal 5 for our reworking.

The first attempt we made was to re-create our existing website, both in content and structure. Most of the content was migrated when our annual campaign season came along and redirected most peoples' attentions. However, we were able to reuse the framework created by this exercise to launch our blog, speakunited.org.

So, several months pass. We continue to use Drupal for multiple internal projects, as well as upgrade mycaringclub.org to Drupal 5 and give it a good re-themeing. During these months, United Way of America, our parent organization, announces its new message of Live United. We decide to use the branding and messaging suggested by UWOA in our United Way, and take this as an impetus to begin working on a new site again.

Live United

This time, we had a much clearer design and content goal, as well as a deadline of June, when UWOA's liveunited.org goes live. We established a five member team; our current webmaster, our writer, one of our designers, our communications director, and myself. I'm going to talk more about the technical aspects of the site here, since the design and tone were largely handled by the others.

Structure

The biggest challenge from an information structure perspective was that we were essentially running many sites for different audiences on the same site. We have our general public audience, but also more engaged groups of agency representatives, campaign managers, media, and staff. To provide useful portals for what each of these audiences needs from us, we decided to use the Domain Access module.

We leaned very heavily on CCK, creating 20 content types so far. This was based on some good advice from Agaric, and it has really been helpful to have such cleanly defined roles for each content type instead of trying to do ten different things with pages. We even ended up replacing the core Blog and Forum content types with CCK/view constructs, and providing structure through domains and OG instead.

Pathauto and Custom Breadcrumbs are used to place most content within the site. User-generated content falls directly below a view which presents a summary of entries for that content type, and the breadcrumb for an entry leads back to this view. In other words, user-generated content is only three levels deep: home > view > content. Blog entries and events are exceptions: their views, paths, and crumbs also includes dates and, in the case of blogs, blogger names.

Certain content types, such as pages, are still set to be menu children by hand, because their structure is unpredictable. These make up a small portion of the site; nothing community contributed falls under this category. Recommended links are being used to aid navigation further on these pages, since the editors can create links to other relevant or child content.

We also wanted to create more engagement within the site, so Organic Groups was a natural. Of course, this introduced the need for the Domain/OG patch, and I'm happy that my work on the site could contribute to the integration between these modules. We created OG content types for Companies, Agencies, and internal Divisions for use by Campaign Managers, Agency Representatives, and Staff roles, respectively. We also have a generic Community type anyone can create and invite others to join; more of your standard OG use.

A couple additions to the domain_conf.inc file allowed us to specify different secondary menus and google analytics settings for each subdomain, which is handy. Panels 1 are being used to set the homepage for each subdomain right now, but their use is likely to expand.

Theming

The site's theme is based off Zen, for the standards compliance and SEO if nothing else. We tried to emulate liveunited.org to a large degree. The subdomains all use the same theme, but we added the active domain to the body classes to allow for targeted tweaks, such as different background colors.

CCK, Imagecache, Related Links, and templates were used to give editors the ability to create nicely rich pages in browser. They can define a sidebar, upload and place images/video within the page, and create navigation blocks.

Migration

While all this was being set up, the blog at speakunited.org continued to be updated. I pre-gamed the transition of that data, and have already done a writeup. I'm happy to report it worked very well!

The path redirect module is being used so all our old links go the correct place still. The mapping was a manual process (the structure of the old site was unpredictable), but it was aided by taking a dump of Google's search index for the existing site. Redirect seems to respect Domain settings, by the way.

A great deal of the content on the new site was newly written to be in line with the new messaging. Stuff that wasn't was migrated by hand; I think it was about 100 pages, and about 100 files attached.

Other Notes

For video, we had originally planned to manage everything though a YouTube channel. We then realized that a lot of our audience is behind firewalls and wouldn't be able to access that content. To get around this, we set up the Flashvideo module and are already enjoying the benefits of having such fine control over our video content.

There was only one custom full module we needed to develop; our donation form. This was helped along by the Drupal Wizard API module. There are a couple of snippets in site-specific helper module; some for OG/Domain integration, custom blocks, come calendar modifications, and special handling of the "wiki" content type.

Conclusion

We launched the site a couple weeks ago, and so far it has been very well received. The membership is all internal staff so far; our next step is to decide how we're going to moderate external members. We are still fine-tuning all the little knobs, so if you have a suggestion, please let me know.

Netsquared Conference

On May 27 and 28th, the third NetSquared will take place in San Jose California. The idea behind NetSquared is to explore the use of the Web and emerging technologies to foster social change.

Our mission is to spur responsible adoption of social web tools by social benefit organizations. There's a whole new generation of online tools available – tools that make it easier than ever before to collaborate, share information and mobilize support. These tools include blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, podcasting, and more. Some people describe them as "Web 2.0"; we call them the social web, because their power comes from the relationships they enable.

I have been asked to present on Drupal as it relates to social change and the non-profit community. My background is heavily rooted in the non-profit world, having worked for various arts based non-profit companies. I also studied arts, technology, theatre, and non-profit management at Virginia Tech. My presentation will occur on the 27th between 4:45 and 5:45 pm.

So I find myself starting to think heavily on how my experiences with pingVision over the last year intersect with my experiences in the non-profit world. I find myself looking at my time working with the NPSL: Nonprofits in Second Life.

The non-profit community, in many ways, is quite like the open-source community. I'm looking forward to talking about how they compliment each other.

Drupal Vancouver Good News Story: Fearless Vancouver Code Sprint

At Drupal Camp Vancouver we had a code sprint event - though I'd describe the result as more of a cross between a code sprint and barn raising - for a local community project named the Fearless Media Project. Their mission statement:

The purpose of the Fearless Media Project is to facilitate community participation in the creation of media and community dialogue on issues relevant to people in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) of Vancouver. This cultural initiative connects documented visions and practises with community priorities and goals. With oversight from the DTES Community Arts Network coordinating body (CANCore), Fearless functions as a portal to arts and culture in "the heart of the city."

As resident, herself, puts it, the Downtown Eastside is one of the most artistic, yet most fatal, regions of the country.

We weren't at all sure how the event would turn out going in. As the discussion title gives away, it turned out great! For those who might be interested we've post a summary here: Code Sprint Does Good!

Database specialist for migration from XOOPS to Drupal | Nabuur.com

We are urgently looking for a database/migration specialist to analyze and script the database migration. The development site is almost ready now, the structure of the new database is known.

NABUUR is an internet platform where villages in developing countries get direct assistance. Online volunteers help create whatever is needed in 150 villages now, and with your help in 10,000 villages soon. We are developing a new Drupal site for http://www.nabuur.com. You can follow the new developments on http://demo.nabuurtest.com/. The current site is in XOOPS and we have about 5 years of data in the database.

XOOPS details:

XOOPS version 2.05

Modules: Freepages, NewBB, XoopsFAQ, News, Wiwi

Lot of hacks to make groups (called village on the site) with projects, tasks and steps

Drupal details:

Drupal 5.7

Modules CCK, Organic groups and Node comment

It would be awsome if we are able to do a first migration on the 5th of June.

We have a (small) budget available for the right person.

Contact me via my contact form.

Please help me protect Drupal at my org

I've recently been asked to compile a list of what's good and exciting about Drupal and how it stacks up against other systems such as Wordpress or .net nuke. Seems there has been concern at some of the higher levels if it is the right platform for us in general. I tend to think it is, so I'm asking your help in improving the list I've put together.

More showcase sites leaning towards not-for-profit would be very helpful. Perhaps down the line someone else will need a list like this as well!

Won a 2008 Webware 100 award: http://www.webware.com/8301-13546_109-9913290-29.html

Its founder was chosen as one of Business Week's top 2008 innovator - http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/apr2008/tc20080417_388737...

Here are some high-traffic, high-end (HTHE) sites using Drupal

Amnesty International - http://www.amnesty.org/

Green Peace - http://www.greenpeace.org

Rumours that Oxfam is moving over from Plone

Free Press - http://www.freepress.net/

The New York Observer - http://www.observer.com/

Skirt Magazine - http://skirt.com/

Popsugar - http://popsugar.com/ (something like 17 million pageviews a month)

Popular Science – http://popsci.com

Many more can be found here

It has partnerships with many other organizations

Drupal is paired with the Knight Foundation - http://groups.drupal.org/knight-drupal-initiative

Google has sponsored $100,000 worth of development for Drupal in the summer of 2008 - http://drupal.org/node/249455

It has at least 2 conventions a year. Recently I attended the Boston DrupalCon, with over 900 people and presentations from Google, MySQL, and over 50 others - http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/

It has integrated SOA support - http://api.drupal.org/api/function/xmlrpc

The fact that it open source and made of open source components provides an argument from an ethical perspective. But also, being written in php by self selecting super-clever enthusiasts means that it's a good system and has a culture supportive of non-profit ventures.

Business argument: Drupal is on the ascendant, and with Acquia there is a strategy in place to bring it to the business market, alongside some of the bigger systems. It is a good basket to put one's eggs in.

Sounds good, but would also add some of the buzzwords management likes to hear:

Stability: drupal requires little maintenance once up and running
Security: drupal is safe for the organization and its users
Scaleability: drupal can grow with the needs of the organization
Modularity: easy to add new functionalities when required, or modify existing ones
On-brand-ity: ability to brand the site as needed
Useability: easy to manage for staff
Interactivity: engage stakeholders and clients externally through interactive tools now or in future
Community: large number of active and professional developers

Discussion platform modules?

Hi All,
I am wondering if anyone is running a bboard, discussion list platform, forum, or anything like that on your Drupal site(s).
It's time for my org to start a discussion space for our constituents. We could use Google Groups or Ning... but of course owning it on our own server is always best. But alas I am one part-time techie with few other staff resources.
So I am just wondering if there are any Drupal discussion platform modules that people are happy with.
Thanks!
Johanna

Drupal themer | Nabuur.com

Drupal themer for a Global Neighbor Network: NABUUR.com

NABUUR is an Internet platform where villages in developing countries get direct assistance. Online volunteers help create whatever is needed in 150 villages now, and with your help in 10,000 villages soon.

We are urgently looking for a drupal themer to give: http://demo.nabuurtest.com/en/village/jinja-central the look of http://www.nabuur.com/modules/villages/mystory.php?villageid=428 .

We are saying the look, because the feel can be improved where possible, we really want to improve the the navigation though the site in this phase.

Please let us know what you can do for us by:

giving some (drupal) reference sites you have themed

an estimate how long it will take you to finish this

We like to go Beta with the new drupal driven site ASAP. In the second phase we want create a completely new design: an online experience of volunteering worldwide. Action!

I was wondering if anyone on here new of a site that maintains a pretty current list of non-profits that use Drupal as their content management system by any chance, particularly higher profile groups and that sort of thing... like showcase sites of the non-profit world...?

Drupal Developer | Public Allies North Carolina

Project Summary

Public Allies North Carolina is seeking proposals for a social networking site using Drupal. We anticipate that most of our functional requirements can be met using existing Drupal modules and the Drupal 5x core, but we seek an experienced CMS developer to select and configure those modules.

Preference will be given to developers in the Triangle area, with whom our organization can form a local working relationship.

About Public Allies North Carolina

Public Allies North Carolina is a non-profit organization that provides community leadership training to young adults and fosters non-profit job experiences through a network of hundreds of partner organizations to whom we commit significant resources. Allies are matched with appropriate organizations and, through their working relationships, Public Allies works to understand and empower the assets of each organization.

A core goal of this project is to increase visibility
and collaboration among Public Allies North Carolina
and our network of partner organizations and other
engaged citizens.

In the past 14 years, Public Allies has developed 185 diverse and passionate young leaders, many of whom continue a career in the local non-profit and public sectors. The strength and integrity of the program benefit greatly when alum continue to stay involved by leading training sessions, contributing to newsletters, developing mentoring relationships with current Allies and many more ways.

Another core goal of this project is to increase
knowledge transfer and exchange among Allies
and Alum.

Current Web Presence

Public Allies North Carolina's current Web site is built within a Kintera site managed by Public Allies National but allows local program directors to edit some content specific to their program. Visit www.publicallies.org.

The new social networking site will have no functional relationship to the current Public Allies site, except that they will link to one another.

Look and Feel

We anticipate that most of our visual/creative design requirements can be met with existing themes and some customization.

Textual Content

The site's textual content will be largely generated in-house and by users.

Functional Requirements

aggregated blog posts / news from across the community

a local map of partner organizations

advanced customizable profiles (for individuals and organizations)

member directory with search and browse capabilities

buddy list

blog for each profile

media upload capabilities (photo, video, audio)

ability to form groups (work groups, discussion groups)

site-wide search

site-wide social tags / tag cloud

rss syndication capabilities for blogs and media

event organizing / calendar sharing
event creation
event notification capabilities (e-invitations)
ability to add a friend's event to personal calendar

other features to be considered:
idea bank
social bookmarks
chat
online donations
google apps integration
Is GFDL Compatible with GPL?

If you have any questions please contact me using my contact page, or shoot me an e-mail.

UNICEF, the world's leading children's organization will be holding an open Storytelling Jam and Hackathon from Friday March 28 through Sunday March 30. The three-day event will be hosted at UNICEF's headquarters in Manhattan, NY.

The focus of this event is to build and implement free and open-source tools for collecting stories, as well as gathering and spreading the stories themselves. Work will be done on a variety of platforms, from mobile phones to the One Laptop per Child's XO machine.

UNICEF is inviting software and hardware experts of all types to create tools that enable young people to capture and share their stories on various hardware devices including the XO. UNICEF's Youth Section has been actively involved in developing various projects in this area, including a radio station on a USB stick, software to allow people to access web pages through SMS / Text messages, and ways to capture the voices of young people through their mobile phones. Developers will be working in groups to either extend existing programs or create new ones. Check the projects page to see a list of proposed projects or propose one of your own. In addition to a viewing for the attendees on Sunday the 30th, Monday the 31st will feature a public viewing at UNICEF HQ where work from the weekend will be displayed and visitors will be able to record their stories.

Some suggested projects are here.
volunteer enthusiasts / consultants for Iraq initiative | International Initiative to Prosecute US Genocide in Iraq

Dear Drupalers,

This is a call to persons with a comprehensive understanding of what is possible in Drupal (particularly via contributed modules) — in other words, Drupal consultants or enthusiasts.

I am in need of general volunteers able to discuss (preferably via Skype) and suggest solutions for various aspects of the implementation of the following (see below) — even just to provide general one-on-one guidance on the nature of certain modules (CCK, CiviCRM, Views, etc.) and their various functions or possibilities.

I am in the process of developing an international initiative aimed at prosecuting the United States, its leaders and allies, on charges of the crime of genocide in Iraq. The site I aim to develop has three main aims:

1) To provide a virtual workspace for international lawyers to build a legal memorandum on US genocide in Iraq; one that can be used in international fora and be the basis of a move towards legal action against the United States, its leaders and allies;

2) To provide a rigorously data secure interface for the online submission of witness testimony on war crimes and grave human rights abuses in Iraq, using this repository to build the case of US genocide in Iraq;

3) To be a focus for the antiwar movement, grounding the claim that the only honest and accurate way to understand and describe US policy and actions in Iraq is as genocide.

This initiative I am developing stems from several years' work on Iraq with the BRussells Tribunal (www.brusselstribunal.org), in defence of the Iraqi people, its resistance and its sovereignty, against the illegal US invasion and occupation. Like the BRussells Tribunal, the International Initiative to Prosecute US Genocide in Iraq will also work on a zero budget and represent no political party.

In effect, this is a call for general guidance, to help me, a non-developer, get up to speed and understand more fully the potential of Drupal.

Please contact me if you are able to assist.

Thank you,
Dr Ian Douglas, coordinator
Drupal Developer Team Needs More Hands (Intern or Volunteer) | AAPC

Do you feel there is something more to preventing gun violence than merely getting rid of guns?

Ever think that there is something missing to the current dialog on failing schools, and the 50 percent high school drop-out rate in Chicago and elsewhere?

Concerned about kids being raised psychologically-rudderless?

Ever wish there was a way you could do more to help create awareness for the big picture, and make Illinois a better place to raise kids?

A local group of Web Development students is looking for 1-2 recent grads to join an existing contingent of like-minded Web-heads concerning Non-profit volunteerism for a 13 week internship to assist in the development of an online campaign (Micro-site, Blog and Wiki) designed to help create awareness of key issues which impact parental involvement with at-risk children.

Our approach is flexible. We're currently building with Drupal (remotely and on our own schedules)--collaborating via phone and email during the week.

If you have a few hours to spare and are looking for a fun, collaborative team to join for something meaningful, benefits the public good, and talk about the latest developments in open-source CMS for non-profits, please let us know. Send text resume (no attachments, please) to us,
Attn: Jennifer Teschy, info (at) illinoisparentsandchildren (dot) org.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
