Mapping solutions for events

Hi there,

Recently I've been reviewing mapping modules for a NGO's Drupal6 website in Germany.

They want to be able to do something very simple: add an address (possibly via CCK Address or a simple text field) to a node (of type event, but selfmade, not via Event module). A map should show up in the full view of that node, having a marker at the place they specified.

Not wanting to steal your time, but has anyone done a similar setup and is willing to share their insights? I've been trying to accomplish this via GeoMap, Location, Nodemap and others, but somehow cannot come to a suitable solution... May I am missing something?

Any hints highly appreciated!

Regards
Sascha

Social Network Opportunity for NPO's

Hi folks,

Trellon is beginning work on a new book about building effective social networks and social media platforms using Drupal. We are looking for an organization that would be interesed in having us build out a social networking platform for them to build stronger relationships with their constituents. All we ask in return is that you allow us to use the platform as the example site for our book. You can read more details below.

This is a great opportunity for an organization with a great cause to jump into the social web. There is no extensive application process. We just request a one page explanation of your organization, mission and why you feel you will benefit from the use of a social networking platform to engage your constituency base.

Contact us at http://trellon.com/contact_us or email Michael Haggerty at mhaggerty@trellon.com if you are interested.

Thanks,

Riche

--

Riche Zamor | Senior Internet Strategist | Trellon, LLC

web www.trellon.com | email rzamor@trellon.com
tel (617) 980-9983 | gtalk rczamor

-------- Original Message --------

Dear NPO Technologist -

My name is Michael Haggerty and I am the Chief Internet Strategist for Trellon, LLC. We are a strategy and development firm specializing in the use of social media for creating web sites, online communities, social networks and CRM solutions for non-profits, NGOs, political campaigns and socially responsible businesses.

We are constructing a training series focused on open source software and working on the first component of the series, which will be a book about building social networks with Drupal. This is intended to be an authoritative reference on what you can do with Drupal in terms of social networking and how to do it, written from a very pragmatic perspective. As part of this volume, we plan on putting together a web site to demonstrate the concepts used, which will include the use of personalized user profiles, user generated media, personal networks, groups where users can self-organize, online collaboration tools, qualitative rating systems, connecting with Facebook and Twitter, and much more.

In conjunction with the book, we are looking for one organization to work with who could benefit from having a social network in place and use it for a good cause. We would provide you with a completed, working system, built to high standards and similar to Facebook in some ways, that includes a complete content management system and training on how to use the tools. If you are currently using Ning, Kickapps, or Social Go to maintain a network, this could easily replace that system and become a more powerful substitute.

When delivered, you would be responsible for hosting and administering the system, albeit with some help from us in setting it up and showing your team how to use it. We would expect feedback on the pros and cons of the system for your purposes in return. Work on the system will begin in July, and we expect to deliver the finished product in early September.

We are accepting applications from organizations who would like to work with us in this effort from now until June 30, 2009. We will be making decisions about who to work with based on the importance of the organizational mission, the financial need of the organization, the potential to benefit from the presence of a social network, and the alignment of that potential with the actual topics discussed in the book. We are pretty nice people here at Trellon, and realize most people at non-profits have a lot going on, so there is no need to make your application overly formal, a one page description of why you want to do this would be perfect.

The one major caveat to be aware of is that we plan on distributing the finished site with the book to demonstrate the concepts discussed. This is open source software, and we are really interested in helping broad groups of people understand what you can do with it. Only apply if you are comfortable with the idea that other people could be setting up something very similar in the near future.

Questions? Concerns? Please feel free to get in touch with me at mhaggerty@trellon.com. Otherwise, you can apply for this opportunity using the contact us form on Trellon.com. Otherwise, I look forward to hearing from some organizations who are ready to get social!

Best Regards,
Michael Haggerty

Sun Microsystems, Acquia and Code Positive are pleased to invite you to a half day event focusing on the benefits and challenges of using Drupal in education.

The session will cover a number of topics relevant to the deployment of Drupal in education:

Suitability of Drupal for brochure websites, course management and delivery, community building, and sharing of information

Which versions of Drupal to use and the recommended modules based upon your needs

Designing and implementing the right architecture to meet scalability and security requirements

Commercial, Enterprise Class support and services available for Drupal and associate infrastructure

Whether you are evaluating Drupal or running in production, this is a great opportunity to learn more about Drupal deployments, put your questions to the experts, and connect with the London Drupal community.

"Introduction to CiviCRM" training May 6th

Hi folks,

The first DC CiviCRM Meetup this past Wednesday had a great showing. We had over 25 people who came out to talk about the system, where it is going, and how various organizations are implementing the CRM.

We discussed the need for both training and networking sessions, and have decided to hold two Meetups each month. In two weeks, on May 6th at 6:30pm, we will hold an "Introduction to CiviCRM" session. We are still looking for a location to hold this session, so please send me any recommendations on conference rooms we can use that can seat about 30 people.

If you are interested in learning about the system, this will be a great Meetup to come to. You can sign up on Meetup.com at:
http://www.meetup.com/dc-civicrm-meetup/calendar/10258472/?from=list&off...

Hope to see you there!

Hi folks,

Just a quick reminder that the DC CiviCRM Meetup will hold it's first meeting this Wednesday, April 22nd from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at The Black Squirrel in Adams Morgan. We will have a Speed Show and Tell, giving each presenter 5 minutes to give a visual or spoken presentation about what they are doing with CiviCRM. This is a great opportunity to come
out and learn about the CiviCRM project, how people are using the system within their organizations, and meet other CiviCRM users and developers in the DC/VA/MD area. If you would like to present, please come prepared with a laptop.

If you have not joined the group yet, sign up at http://www.meetup.com/dc-civicrm-meetup/. We have grown to a decent
sized group in just a week and new people are joining each day.

Hope to see you there,

Drupal For Good - San Francisco Bay Area @ NTC 2009

If you work with Drupal in a non-profit/social change setting, are based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and are planning to attend the 2009 Nonprofit Technology Conference this month, I'd like to invite you to the "Drupal For Good - San Francisco Bay Area" session that I'll be leading on Sunday afternoon. This should be a fun opportunity to find out what's cooking in the local non-profit Drupal scene and meet our fellow Bay Area Drupal do-gooders face-to-face. Read on for details...

Drupal For Good - San Francisco Bay Area
Sunday, Apr 26, 2009 1:30 PM
2009 Nonprofit Technology Conference - registration required at http://www.nten.org/ntc
San Francisco Hilton, Franciscan B meeting room
Session details: http://tinyurl.com/cnjs3x

Description:

An informal gathering of Drupal developers and users based in the Bay Area who use Drupal in a nonprofit/social change setting. We'll discuss local resources for learning Drupal; share our latest Drupal endeavors; and hopefully set the stage for future collaboration and get-togethers. This is for Drupallers of all experience levels - newbies to veterans.

Takeaways:

Find out about Bay Area user groups and other local resources for learning Drupal

Map out the players in the Bay Area Drupal scene: Who's working with Drupal? What are you doing with it? What help can you give? What help do you need?

Brainstorm your Drupal problems/solutions with other session participants

Please pass the word around about this session, and I hope to see you there!

Drupal Designers and Developers needed for THE grassroots website for Gay and Lesbian Equal Rights

We are currently developing "Equality Central" with the goal of establishing a clearinghouse for all events, organizations, campaigns, resources for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) equal rights and justice movement. We have "buy-in" from major grassroots organizations in California and have built a beta website. We need Drupal developers and designers who can help develop the website. We are focusing on California, but this could become the national, grassroots hub for LGBTQ activism.

Please let me know if you are interested.

This is unpaid and volunteer, but a great opportunity to help build a major website for the next Civil Rights movement.

Equity Partner - Technology Guru | Social Network + CMS = Neighborhood-based social network startup

As the economic downturn becomes more pronounced and people begin to realize that government alone cannot help solve the problem, there is a growing awareness of the need for community and connection. We are developing a plug-in portal for individuals, groups, and organizations that want to create a better world through direct help to one another. It is an online city-specific community that is part social network and part CMS that connects those that need help with those that want to help.

I am social entrepreneur with successful startup experience. This is early stage development and I am looking for a chief technology officer and engineer with experience in weaving together open source applications in new and creative ways. A LAMP/Drupal development firm could also be a good fit. I am looking for a great partner who is creative, loves work (and play), has integrity, and is driven by doing good.

This is a non-funded startup, and the pay will be in founder level shares for the company.

This opportunity may change your life and the lives of millions more.

Requirements:

. Strong leadership skills
. Strong LAMP /RoR/ Drupal /MySQL and similar Experience
. Detail Oriented
. Strong Developer experience
. Familiarity with the full software development lifecycle, including agile methods, and iterative builds
. Creativity! This is an application never before seen you will be the creative force behind developing a new interactive Web application that works across all popular browsers.

Drupal for NGOs - April 2009

Drupal For NGOs is a monthly series of events aimed at empowering NGOs to implement and manage their websites by knowing which modules to use and how to configure them. Each month will cover a topic in detail, showcase recent projects, and feature a Drupal question and answer session.

Which topic is covered each month will be decided by a poll, so if there's something you'd like to know more about please cast your vote or make a suggestion.

Sun Microsystems is hosting this month's Drupal For NGOs, and will also be providing presentations on Scaling And Optimising MySQL and Backing Up MySQL Data.

We will also be giving away two Drupal books that Packt Publishing have generously contributed:

Drupal 6 Site Builder Solutions

Building Powerful And Robust Websites With Drupal 6

Get A Ticket

The event is free, but you will need to RSVP if you would like to attend.

Future Events

Drupal For NGOs has been away for a few months but will now restart as a regular event hosted at a different venue each month. Thanks to Rob Purdie who did an excellent job of starting Drupal For NGOs, and has now moved to New York. Hopefully he can take part via a live connection. Rob has passed on responsibility for organising the event to Robert Castelo, and if you'd like to host Drupal For NGOs or have any other suggestions please contact Robert.

Note

The event will be limited to 100 attendees. If it fills up before you get a ticket, please get in contact to let us know we need to get a bigger venue for the next event. Also note that there is a pub below the venue, where the meeting will likely move afterwards.

The tag for this event is drupal4ngos200904, and all presentations will be available after the event.

Volunteer drupal/javascript developers | Nabuur.com

Make a difference – help develop NABUUR, the Global Neighbour Network

If you like to work with diverse people, and develop tools that really matter, NABUUR could be the place for you.

Nabuur.com is an online volunteering platform that links Neighbours (online volunteers) with Villages (local communities) in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Connected through Nabuur.com, Neighbours and local communities learn about each other, share ideas and find solutions to local issues.

Over the last years the concept of online volunteers helping communities in developing countries has been proven. Based on these experiences a NABUUR 2.0 site was developed using Drupal 5. Still, the platform is continuously developing and there are a lot of functionality requests.

Are you a developer and do you want to build and extend the Global Neighbour Network?
Then you've come to the right place.

The development of the NABUUR site is ongoing. We're working to develop the website to be even greater - join us, what ever you can offer (ideas, documentation, code...)

What is needed?

An issue tracker containing bugs that need to be fixed, functionality requests and future plans is available at http://svn.nabuurtest.com/trac. Here you can also find a wiki containing the documentation of the site

How do I get started?

Find easy instructions on how to set up your own copy of the site here.

Join the developers in the development chat channel at xmpp chat development@conference.chat.nabuur.com
(or available via html on our webchat)

Maybe you want to develop for Nabuur and the drupal community. We invite you to have a look at our wishlist.

Find an issue you can solve, or suggest your own here.

Looking forward to work with you!

The NABUUR development team

SalesForce Taxonomy module... thoughts? interest? contributors?

The sf_node and sf_user modules are great.

What I would like to see (and what I'm going to have to build for a few upcoming projects) is a sf_taxonomy module.

In essence, I see this as tying a SalesForce picklist value set to a Drupal vocabulary.

The biggest hurdle, imho, is that SalesForce picklists are specific to single object types, where as Drupal vocabularies are site-wide.

Given that, will this idea even float?
What are peoples' thoughts about ways to work around this particular obstacle?
What are some other obstacles?
Is anyone interested in pitching in?

Drupal @ 2009 Nonprofit Technology Conference - April 26-28 in San Francisco

Here's an event in San Francisco that may be of interest to nonprofit Drupallers. There are some Drupal/CMS sessions on the agenda. I'm trying to get a "Bay Area Drupal for Good" birds-of-a-feather session included, as well - I'll keep local folks posted, if it happens. The conference is held in a different city every year, so if you're local to the Bay Area, this year is a good opportunity to go. Note that the registration fee goes up if you register after March 13.

Every movement needs a mission. Here's one! Help Drupal Help Save the World!

Can Drupal save the world? Does this Drupal movement have a mission? Is Drupal moral?

Help me answer these question. I volunteer with a small, DC-based human-rights group. They run an overtaxed Wordpress site on a an overtaxed server. They have a new, better host. But I was thinking this week would be a perfect opportunity to help a needy non-profit, move the site to drupal, and answer the above questions.

Current site: http://uscampaignforburma.org/

Are you staying in DC on Saturday? Can you lend a few hours? Here's what I think we need:

1 or 2 drupal generalists, to give the staff a head start

1 designer and/or 1 themer, to move/improve the WP theme

1-2 people experienced in data porting, esp. WP

Anyone else who wants to help!!!

If you're interested, email me at david@crookednumber.com. Leave a comment below. Or hit me up on Twitter @crookednumber.

Thanks very much!

The Eclipse foundation is relaunching their Eclipse PlugIn Central (EPIC) plugin repository site in Drupal. Help them make it rock by analyzing their requirements document and giving them the best tips possible. http://wiki.eclipse.org/EPICModernization

EPIC Modernization Requirements Document V 0.1

The Eclipse Plugin Central (EPIC) is a popular and successful resource for the Eclipse community. It lists over 1100 Eclipse based products and drives thousands of click-thrus per month to some of the top rated products. Unfortunately, EPIC is hosted on an older content management system (CMS), so it is difficult to maintain and update. Therefore, we are starting a project to modernize EPIC and re-host it on a more modern updated CMS.

This document is to capture and prioritize all of the requirements for a new EPIC. The goal is to finalize the requirement by the end of March and begin implementation shortly thereafter.

Below is a draft version of the document. We encourage people to submit their suggestions for this bugzilla entry. We will update the document based on the input from many sources.

Goals

Dramatically increase the usability of through improved navigation and graphic design.

Make it easier for solution providers to manage their product entries.

Provide better linkage between EPIC site and the vendors’ update sites.

Host EPIC on a new content management system.

Requirements

Usability and Navigation

Need the ability to tag products and navigate via a tag cloud.

Products should be able to have multiple tags and product owners should be able to select and define tags for their products.

A product needs to be able to be in multiple categories. Currently a product can only be in one category

For plugins that have not been updated for a long time, we need to show that the information might be old and out of date.

Allow cross linking to other similar products by the same vendor and/or category

Allow cross linking to Eclipse Live content

Management and Administration

Remove the moderation queue for plugin / service listing updates.

Host the click thru reports for member plugins on EPIC itself allowing for realtime data.

Allow plugins to upload their plugin image icons directly to the server.

Social Networking Ideas

We should allow a product to be voted up or down, similar to digg. Remove the vote 1-10 system in place now. Need to allow people to add a 'vote' graphic onto their site. We could introduce aging of votes, so votes expire after ### days or categorize the votes by time to provide rankings for "this week"/"this month"/"this year" similar to the way YouTube and others social sites do.

Need to maintain the RSS feeds for new and updated products

Allow users to specify their favourite products and then produce an RSS feed that shows them any changes for that plugin.

Be able to show the list of most 'favourite products' across all users

Update Sites

Integrate a p2-compatible catalog for the product listings and provide an electronic feed for that catalog

Can a list of favorite products be used to aggregate a personal catalog for an individual

CMS Issues

Current thinking is to host EPIC and Live on a single shared Drupal install.

We should integrate sign-on with existing Buzilla accounts

The current install of PostNuke places a large load on the database. We should be sending SELECT queries to the slave and INSERT/UPDATE queries to the master.

Support for Training and Service Providers

Need to be able to search/tag by geography and expertise

Training calendar for Eclipse public courses

Migration Requirements

Plugin information should be migrated to new EPIC without requiring intervention from plugin owner.

Username and password information should be migrated to the new site. We should try to delete any usernames that aren't being used.
-- (Gunnar) Q: Should EPIC get rid of it's own password storge and use the global Eclipse.org login?
-- (Gunnar) Support for additional authentication sources (eg. OpenID) should be added.

Naming

We should consider referring to 'products' or 'projects' and not plugins, since a lot of the solutions listed on EPIC are not actual plugins.

Should we rename Eclipse Plugin Central to something more generic; maybe Eclipse Solution Center?

Other Ideas

I think it would be interesting to show what Eclipse projects are

What You Need to Know

There are some tools that go along with the trade, and it helps to know about the industry. We are looking for people with a good grounding in some or all of the following concepts and techniques:

Basic office communication tools such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Visio. You have to know how to operate these tools and/or their open source equivalents to keep up with our team.

Open source solutions, including web applications, the LAMP stack, Linux, and correlative technologies that go along with these solutions. Basically, we are looking for people who are already articulate in these areas and ready to learn more.

Social media, including online communities, social networks, widgets, mobile solutions, blogs, Twitter, Flickr, and other services.

Rapid application development methodologies, featuring daily check ins and weekly project reviews.

Project management techniques, with strong preference given to PMPs with a background that includes constructing project plans from proposals and negotiating detailed requirements with clients.

Who We Are

Trellon is a full-service Internet Strategy and Development firm specializing in open source software. We build web portals, content management systems, social networks, online communities, e-commerce and CRM solutions.

Trellon has built a reputation for delivering robust solutions on tight timeframes. We help organizations align their social media strategies with their organizational goals, articulate the plan for how to achieve optimal results, and deliver cost effective, sustainable solutions on open platforms. Founded in 2004, we have deployed over 200 web sites, ranging in size from small regional concerns to high traffic, national web presences. Our clients include non-profits, NGOs, political campaigns, associations, socially responsible businesses, and media concerns.

Trellon has a strong history in the open source and social media communities. The founders were key players in the Draft Clark movement and Clark for President campaign, online efforts to elect a presidential candidate primarily leveraging the Internet for support. We developed advanced social media strategies to engage millions of grassroots supporters nationwide and still draw from these experiences in every project we deliver. Trellon has a tradition of giving back to the communities we serve, and devotes over 10% of company development time each month contributing back to the Drupal and CiviCRM platforms through patches, code releases, publications, evangelism, webinars, and direct support of new users.

In terms of corporate philosophy, Trellon believes in the immense value of open source software and open standards. Nothing is worse than being locked into a particular platform primarily designed to protect a business model instead of engaging in true innovation. Portable information that can be consumed by multiple devices independent of platform and flexible, extensible methods for publishing / accessing content offer better solutions for the way people use technology today. These characteristic features of open systems provide the basis for building an economy of knowledge, allowing people and systems to 'talk' in unique and meaningful ways while building value through their interactions. Our work as a company is an expression of this philosophy.

How to Apply

Please direct all inquiries to jobs@trellon.com. Please include a cover letter, resume, and statement of salary requirements. No phone calls, please.

Drupal Developer | Trellon, LLC

What This Job is All About

Drupal Developers are important actors in our delivery process. Here's what we expect them to do:

Understand the goals and strategy behind each project from conception through completion. Our thoughtful, dedicated approach to working with clients is what sets us apart. Lead developers help make sure each project meets or exceeds the goals we set out to achieve.

Write clean, well-engineered code that conforms with accepted standards within the Drupal community, and test web applications. Drupal Developers set an example through strong quality assurance practices in their day to day work.

Communicate effectively with project managers, technical leads, internet strategists, and other internal team members, as well as outside stakeholders. We want to maintain a positive, productive environment, and Drupal Developers are active in sharing knowledge across the organization and with our clients.

Identify opportunities for process improvement and make constructive suggestions for change. There is always a better way to do things, and Drupal Developers are instrumental in helping our team to become more productive.

Who We Are Looking For

Drupal Developers bring a broad range of skills with them including a background in different technologies, critical thinking skills and expertise in the platforms we commonly use to deliver great results to clients.

Have-to-have skills include the following:

Strong understanding of best practices in Drupal development in some or all of the following areas:

overall site configuration, configuring major modules and knowing when to use them

developing custom modules, interacting with the hook infrastructure and how to modify the internal operations of Drupal

implementing themes, understanding preprocessor functions and how to efficiently implement advanced interfaces

The ability to interact with clients, covering the following areas:

collecting requirements, reviewing deliverables, and helping people to understand how to use the platform

providing training on methods and concepts for working with Drupal, offering guidance on the best use of the system

providing insight on technical subjects and assisting other members of the team in crafting strategy

Knowledge of PHP and MySQL development techniques, including the following:

using svn for daily code checkouts

the ability to effectively troubleshoot issues occurring at the server level

The ability to work without direct supervision, to make use of internal project management tools, to diligently record your hours in the timekeeping system, and to keep others aware of your schedule for planning purposes.

Nice-to-haves include the following:

jQuery programming and expert-level CSS skills. We don't need everyone to know how to build AHAH interfaces or resolve IE6 issues, but like people who do.

Experience with scalability issues and high performance web sites. Some of our sites deliver 14 million pages an hour and need the tires changed often.

Technical documentation. Being able to write a process flow diagram to explain how a process works is a highly coveted skill here at Trellon.

Writing skills. Articulate, clever people with their own opinions will find many outlets for their talents.

In-depth experience with CiviCRM and other CRM platforms, social networks and SNA, widgets, mobile solutions, Jasper Reports, BIRT, Salesforce, DIA, data mining, artificial intelligence, business intelligence or related platforms and techniques. If you can see a common thread between these items, we want to talk to you.

Why You Would Want to Work Here

Trellon is a little different from other companies. There are a lot of reasons you might want to look at working with our team:

We build awesome Drupal sites. Trellon delivers robust solutions on tight timeframes, which often include advanced components that go far beyond out of the box solutions. We are experts on thinking through challenges and developing thoughtful, sustainable solutions that are satisfying on so many levels.

You work from home on your own schedule. Trellon is a virtual company, there's no boss looking over your shoulder telling you to turn off Oprah.

You get to make the world a nicer place. 90% of our clients are non-profits, NGOs, associations, universities and other worthwhile organizations who are looking to do all sorts of great things. The other 10% of our clients are doing something special with the Internet, we are choosy about the projects we take on.

You get to learn something new. We have a fantastic team of smart people, all of whom enjoy sharing their knowledge, and our projects tend to be cutting edge affairs that involve unique, sophisticated technology challenges. We hire based on character just as much as technical competence.

You get paid to contribute back to Drupal. Full time developers are paid to write patches, contribute modules, blog about cool topics, go to user groups, and generally act as a responsible open source people.

Drupal Engineer and Internet Director | 350.org - An International Climate Campaign

Are you a Drupal ninja? Do you want to use your skills in service of a greater good?

We're looking for a benevolent code-shredder who can help run an international campaign to stop the climate crisis. Our small and nimble crew coordinate 350.org, a new internationalized platform to link up the pieces of the growing global movement to stop the climate crisis. We're a young team that moves quickly, and we seek an engineer who can match us in enthusiasm, efficiency, and dedication.

We want to push the boundaries of what's possible with web-based activism, to develop and implement tools that can facilitate the creation a new kind of global movement: wired, diverse, mobile, visionary , and above all, effective.

Our ideal candidate has:

Content Management Specialist | Fellowship of Reconciliation

The Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) is seeking an energetic, creative person to help transition to our new web site. As we migrate from static HTML to a new Drupal web site, we are in need of help managing and organizing our content. Actual website design and development will be handled by a separate contractor. This position reports directly to FOR's Co-Director of Communications. This temporary position will be part time for approximately 2 to 4 months. We expect the work to take at least 20 to 40 hours.

This position will focus on these tasks:

Catalog every page of the current static web site indicating title, categories, last update, location, and content.

Provide input and advice for decisions about the technical and organizational migration of this content. The bulk of migration will be automated.

Systematically review content in new CMS and clean-up formatting and links where needed.

Minimum qualifications:

Familiarity with the web and using different types of web sites.

Comfort reading and editing standard HTML.

Basic understanding of web site navigation.

Comfort using Google Docs and/or standard Office software.

Your own computer with a dedicated internet connection.

Knowledge of Drupal or CSS is a plus.

Background:
FOR's main web site, FORUSA.org, is currently built with static HTML and Dreamweaver templates. Navigation has not been updated in at some time, and we suspect there are many gems lying relatively unknown and certainly underutilized among the thousands of images and HTML files on the site. The current content of our website will need to be systematically surveyed and documented so that we can determine what to migrate and how to organize it on the new web site. We hope to work with a skilled intern or temporary worker to undertake this classification project. The second major step will be migrating the content into Drupal, which hopefully can be done in a partially-automated manner to save time.

Stipend: $10/hour. No benefits. A bonus may be available for completing the work in a more efficient manner.

Start Date: ASAP. Position will remain open until filled.

Location: Flexible. Anywhere within 4 hours of the Eastern Standard Time zone is acceptable, however being located in central North Carolina would be a plus.

How to Apply: Please send a cover letter or resume, at least two URLs or HTML files showing your work, and three personal or professional references to communications+html@forpeace.net with the title "content management specialist" in the subject line. Inquiries will be accepted by e-mail to the same address. No phone calls, please.

Idealware Non-profit CMS report sponsorship and consultant listing opportunities

Hi, last year Drupal was the most popular and one of the highest rated content management systems in the Non-profit CMS report. The report last year was done by NTEN.

If you are interested in getting your business listed as a sponsor for this report by Idealware, please visit http://www.idealware.org/os_cms_report_sponsors.php.

Our article comparing Joomla, Drupal, and Plone gets more than 2000 unique page views per month, and is in the top four Google search results for any combination of the three platform names (i.e. "Joomla Drupal", or "Drupal Plone"). We will strongly promote the new report from this older article, throughout the nonprofit technology community, and to our opt-in list of almost 7000 people (of this list, 71% help nonprofits with technology decisions, 67% are with nonprofits with an annual budget of more than $500K, and 36% are with organizations with a budget of more than $2 Million).

The report will include both a consultant directory and sponsorship opportunities, and we'd love to include you.

Strange problem with Forums in a multilangual site - help please

Hello,

I’m building with Drupal 6.9 a multilingual (English, Hebrew, Arab, Greek & Turkish) site for a Middle Eastern NGO (http://b1.mideastpan.org).

Setting of a multilingual site with I18 pack was, for a non-programmer ‘Drupal newbie’, pretty straightforward. It seems that content translation and switching between interface & menu languages are working fine (Bravo).

After setting a forum, the following ‘strange’ problems appear:

Initially I’ve set the Forum content type to ‘Multilanguage enabled + translation’ which followed with the creation of 3 nodes for every new forum-topic node I tried to create.

I thought that this would be to complicated for me to tweak, so I continued to set the Forum content type to be language disabled but to allow input in all languages:

Multilingual support:
Disabled

Extended language support:
Extended - All defined languages will be allowed.

Which seems to generally work-
When you’re in English or in Arabic modes (/en/ or /ar/) You can go to Forum in the menu and post a new forum topic. Then you are returned safely and your topic will show on the forums. If you’ll switch languages ( /ar/-/en/-/he/ prefixes or with language switchers at the bottom of the pages), you’ll still see the forum post that was entered.

But, stangely, this doesn’t seem to work in Hebrew mode:
1. After posting a new forum topic in /he/ the menu gets messed-up.
2. In /he/ you wouldn’t see any forum topics (the lists will show 0).

tried to ‘reset to default’ the Forum content type…
disabled and reenabled the Forum module…
searched forums and the web…

no solution yet…

posted on Drupal's main forums too (http://drupal.org/node/362026)

any suggestions, insights or advises?

many thanks in advance,

Good examples of image and image gallery integration? modules, photo sharing service apps, etc?

Hey fellow Drupal for Good members, I'm looking for advice on photo integration.

Modules we've been playing around with make it easy to create simple thumbnail galleries and display images in a lightbox when selected, but they don't facilitate captions with individual photos when they're displayed as thumbnails or in the lightbox.

Has anyone seen any good examples they can point to?

If you know anything that integrates well with a Flickr account, that'd be ideal. Flickr's out of the box app and Pictobrowser are both nice, but I'm wondering if anything out there beats their ease of use and level of integration (outside of slideshow mode) by your standards. Any thoughts?

With appreciation, -josh

Drupal, 2008 Elections, Obama and you!

Folks,

I am currently working on a couple of volunteer projects related to the elections, drupal and Obama. If you are interested in putting your skills to use in this regard please give me a shout (privately) asap.

I'm looking for the following -

Drupal admin and light system admin

Light Drupal programming and themeing

Graphic design (I need a simple banner and some other graphical elements very quickly)

This is ideal for either:

a) Newbies who have a lot of time, desire and are looking for a way to take part in this historic election and would like to build up their skill sets/resumes

and/or

b) More experienced people who have the chops and would like to take on some targeted tasks and help bring some real change to the country.

Again please contact me privately (dan@drob.org).

I realize that not everyone who reads this will be an Obama supporter - that's cool! :)

Regards,

Dan

Systems Administrator | Democracy Now!

Forwarding this really cool opportunity to join the Democracy Now! team in New York. If you're a Linux Systems Admin with Drupal experience, this sounds like a fantastic opportunity to join a driven team of smart, passionate people working for justice. One of the responsibilities would be to develop new internal and public websites for them: sounds like Drupal would be a great fit!

Here's the info. It was taken from http://www.democracynow.org/about/jobs#sysadmin

============================================================

Immediate opening for full-time Systems Administrator

Democracy Now! is a daily, non-profit, national, independent news hour based in New York City. Our public website, which is is visited by tens of thousands of users daily, features the news hour every day in a variety of video, audio, and transcript formats, and also features a store selling copies of the program. Internally, we maintain a heterogeneous network of client and server computers to process, store, and record the show and its components and to support our general office and distribution operations. Democracy Now! is hiring a full-time Systems Administrator with extensive Linux experience to maintain, support, and extend these systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Implement, maintain, and monitor the computer network and internal servers, including our internet connection, firewall, and shared printer resources.

Provide desktop technical support to staff and volunteers, primarily on an Apple OS X platform.

Coordinate with external consultants and service providers who are responsible for some aspects of our technical operations.

Architect and, where practical, develop web sites and applications for public and internal use.

Research and suggest cost effective products and solutions which may improve organizational workflow.

QUALIFICATIONS

As a small organization with limited IT staff but diverse technological needs, we seek to hire someone who can work with a wide variety of technologies and quickly learn new technologies.

Experience configuring and maintaining GNU/Linux servers and an ability to create and maintain bash shell scripts are essential. The ideal candidate will also have experience with some or all of the following technologies: Free Software media processing tools including ffmpeg, mencoder, sox, dvgrab, and MP4Box; programming languages including Perl, Ruby on Rails, and Python; Apple OS X and Microsoft Windows desktop and application support, ideally including Final Cut Pro and Filemaker Pro; version-control systems such as Subversion and git; firewall maintenance with OpenBSD and pf; and web technologies including HTML, CSS, and XML.

Also essential are the abilities to manage several simultaneous projects and to research, select, and integrate new technologies. Experience in a non-profit or media environment is preferred, as is an interest in independent media and non-commercial television.

This is a full-time New York City-based position with benefits and salary based on experience. Democracy Now! is an Equal Opportunity Employer that actively recruits women, people of color, persons with disabilities, and persons with diverse gender and sexual identities.

To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter (PDF or plain text formats only) to job (at) democracynow (dot) org with “Systems Administrator” as the subject. No phone calls.

Geo module is minimally functional in D6

I've had some time and some funding, so I've roughed in my proof of concept on a D6 version of Geo. In traditional geek style, the most informative descriptions are in my commit messages: http://drupal.org/project/cvs/147736

Basically, my goal is to demystify "geospatial", while integrating it as much as possible within Drupal. It needn't be an academic exercise to get this data working properly, so I've tried to keep things simple. The goals/implementation do the following:

1) Provide an API module, which makes available some functions such as geo_db_add_field, and others. It also keeps track of the capabilities of the various installed backends, and provides some Views 2 handlers.

2) Provide CCK fields that can contain geospatial data. The use case here would be to store user-generated data such as points ( e.g. addresses ), lines ( e.g. an uploaded track ), or polygons ( e.g. a hand-drawn shape ). I have rearchitected this from the original implementation so that it now works closely with CCK itself. Basically, you let CCK create your field's table, and then we sneak in and add a geospatial column.

3) Import externally-provided shape data, and make it work in harmony with Drupal's existing data. I wrote an import utility this week so that you can download zip files from any source, and upload them to your Drupal site (!).

4) Using the imported data: You can create CCK fields that match a name/value pair from the column, for example "state id/state name", and users can add data using select lists. This key is then used to link your content to the imported geospatial data, so that your queries can use Contains, Within, etc. functionality.

While somewhat crufty and fallible, this code is all pretty much in working order. I'm working on this project in conjunction with http://drupal.org/project/votesmart , and using Geo to find district- and precinct-level data based on a user's address. I can import legislative district data from census.gov, automagically create content types for candidates using Vote Smart, assign them a district ( e.g. 61A ), and then search for representatives using Views filters.

As long as you're cool with typing "POINT(-94.14796237931 46.438258841379)" into your exposed filters, it's working pretty well ;)

I'm seeking input and developer-level feedback. It's by no means ready for end users, but I'm interested in extra pairs of eyes at this point.

Thanks, see you next week!

Allie

Media Player with Dynamic Logo!

Made some progress last night with the Drupal Media Player that I blogged about recently. Dynamic logos!

You have to go to my blog to see the action.

This was created with an hour of tweaking the OpenLaszlo XML, and then pasting the following into this node:
print theme('media_player_player', 'http://spindowners.com/files.dm/videos/20051210-w50s.flv', array('logo' => '/sites/aaronwinborn.com/files/my-logo.png');

Couldn't be simpler! I see a dev release as soon as we have an icon for the play button!

Of course, playlists and the like will take more. We've talked about including several players, including a light-weight and one with all the bells & whistles, and have the module call the proper one according to passed parameters.

BabelUp: a community for social change

www.babelup.com

BabelUp is a social network for social activism. That is, it's a fun community to hang out in with friends and discuss global issues. BabelUp hosts forums, user blogs, image galleries, real-time chatting, groups, calendars, and lots of other features you'd expect to find in a well-designed (hopefully) social network.

The goal of BabelUp is to attract young people who wouldn't ordinarily be interested in social activism. BabelUp aims to do this through its highly interactive website and encouraging community. Hopefully, users will join for the social features on the recommendation of their friends and will become more engaged in activism as they spend more time on the site.

I myself am a student activist. I started BabelUp as an "action plan" developed at a summer program at Brown University last year; BabelUp was my first web design project. I really started working on the site around late September and finished in late January; the site was live in "Beta" for a few months before I rebuilt it entirely in mid-June. I've learned a lot about Drupal and found that I really enjoy web design in addition to the obvious feel-good incentive.

BabelUp is solidly designed with a lot of custom PHP (mostly in blocks and for other visual reasons - the functionality Drupal modules provide is excellent). I think it serves as a good example of both how Drupal can be used to build social networks as well as of how Drupal can be used for social good.

I hope you like the site and I'm happy to hear any feedback or answer any questions you have. Of course some of the more complex features you usually see in a social network require you to join in order to see them (like the Facebook-style user statuses), but I hope that you'll find the site worthwhile enough to join and take a serious look. If you have a favorite cause, joining can help you raise awareness; if you just like to talk politics, environment, etc., then BabelUp is also the place for you.

www.babelup.com

Drupal'n'Go Call For Projects and Participants

<

div class="content clear-block">

A community effort to help a NGO get some ass-kicking internet presence — October 4th and 5th, 2008 — Paris, La Cantine Numérique

On the first weekend of October 2008, in only 2 days, the Drupal French Community will build a complete and live website for a selected NGO. All free. Free as in free beer, and free as in free speech.

What’s in it for the selected NGO?

You do not have an internet presence? You have a very lousy one? You want to to do a specific incredibly cool thing on the web?

Please register on the main Drupal n’Go web site (http://www.drupalngo.org/user/register). Then visit http://www.drupalngo.org/en/node/add/applications to fill in the project application form.

Both small and large NGOs can apply. The community will choose a single NGO project.

During the two days of the event we will build for you the most awesome, buzzwordy plateform imaginable, taking care of all aspects and all related costs of such an endeavor.

Unlike traditional web projects, having detailed specifications is not necessary. Our volunteers will help you do that.

Projects the community feels it can really contribute to — not only regarding the implementation but also regarding imagining the solutions, the design and the strategy — will probably get more attention.

And as Drupal is a free and open source software, with a strong ecosystem, the NGO will have total control on its website: no strings attached, no proprietary software to update, and a clear path of evolution.

The registration process ends on September 10th, 2008. The selected NGO will be announced on September 15th, 2008.

Fill in the form on drupalngo.org today, and grab a chance to get the best website money could not buy!

What’s in it for the participants?

As participants we will have developers (both newbies and hard core rockstars), project managers, themers, visual designers, journalists (to cover the event and help editing), information architects, sysadmins, and of course members of the NGO that will be the main stakeholders of the project and anyone else that is willing to come and can give us a hand.

The main idea being that on the evening of the second day, the site will go live to the amazement and pleasure of all :-)

Participants will be able to learn to know each other better, learn how incredibly fast Drupal is when it comes to building websites, improve their skills and exchange on best practices while providing real value to a good cause.

If you want to participate, we invite you to register on the Drupal n’Go web site: http://www.drupalngo.org. There you will be able to fill in the domain in which you are most interested in contributing.

Wait! Can it work? In only 2 days?

Thanks to the agility of Drupal and the large range of talents gathered in the same place at the same moment, yes, it will work.

Intensive coding session on a specific project has always been an essential part of the Drupal community (they are called ‘Code Sprints’) and the Open Source community as a whole. We want to extend this to the full range of the webdesign process, because Drupal alone is tooooo easy!

Even better: we have a really, really good plan.

So what’s the plan?

The basic schedule of the two days will be:

Day One: on Saturday, the first half of the day will be a “normal” DrupalCamp — though there will already be sessions preparing for the later effort. At least two sessions will demonstrate how to work with a big team in a smooth and collaborative way with an introduction to using an SCM and writing issue tickets.

The afternoon will be dedicated to the preparation of the work on the website. Groups will discuss and prepare the information architecture, some of the technical choices, content, functionalities and so on. Also our team will solve any remaining infrastructure questions — even if most will be prepared beforehand.

Day Two: On Sunday most of the “concrete work” will be done. Graphic designers will do their share. Journalists will interview and write awesome pieces. Developers will develop. Integrators will integrate… and project managers will keep us on rhythm.

A lot of preparation work will be done beforehand to ensure we can start working quickly and effectively. There will be integration and testing servers ready, a dedicated code repository and issue tracker, even a live CD with a preconfigured development environment.

But wait, there is even more!

We won’t stop there: we also have a plan for the aftermath. A hosting company (Bearstech) will donate web hosting, there will be training sessions offered to the NGO after the event, and (yet to be determined exactly) community based support for project.

We already have some sponsors and will be calling for more.

Collaboration Foundation - Vote Needed for Non-Profit Drupal Site

Dear Drupal for Good Community,

Our non-profit, The Collaboration Foundation, is a finalist for a $10,000 online 'Ideablob' grant. We need votes to win. The grant would be used to build an innovative non-profit Drupal site that will look like this: http://collaborationfoundation.org/images/web/cf_home.jpg

Please vote here:
http://ideablob.com/ideas/1247-The-Collaboration-Foundation-C

About The Collaboration Foundation
The Collaboration Foundation is a grassroots non-profit arts organization that grew from The 1 Second Film project (currently runs on Drupal). The 1 Second Film has over 10,000 participants in 59 countries. Apple recently donated over $25K in computers to support the project. Our goal is to build an innovative platform for global collaborative art and social-change on a scale only possible when people work together. Our Board of Directors includes Albert Maysles, Juli Taymor, Stephen Nemeth, and Ben Goldhirsh. For more info, please visit www.collaborationfoundation.org

What We Will do With the $10K
If we win the $10K grant, funds will be used to build a non-profit dynamic Drupal site that will provide a global community of participants with free tools to connect, create, and collaborate. Preview the design for our new site here: http://collaborationfoundation.org/images/web/cf_home.jpg

Possible Benefits for Drupal Community
• Creation of a high visibility Drupal for Good project
• Ongoing development of our site could offer tangible training exercises for students in Drupal Dojo. We've talked to some high end Drupal companies about donating project managers to oversee Drupal apprentices in the collaborative development of the Collaboration Foundation's Drupal site.
• Could document the build w/ video and provide learning materials for Drupal Community
• All technology developed for the project will be open and returned to Drupal community.
• We're open to other ideas from Drupal community about meaningful ways our project can give back to the community.

If you would like to support this, please take 30 seconds to vote here:

Voting lasts til July 31.

And please share with friends. If you have any questions, suggestions, etc. about the project, or if interested in being a part of it, please contact me.

Media Code Sprint (Top 3 Goals)

The Media Code Sprint is underway! Here's a cross-post from my blog detailing the goals of this sprint, which runs through Saturday. We need your help!

Andrew Morton (drewish), Darrel O'Pry (dopry, remotely), and I are heading up a Media Code Sprint in Portland this week! Come help, in person or remotely, if you're interested in multimedia and Drupal! It has now officially started, and as I've volunteered to help keep folks updated, here goes...

First the reasons.

Number One: Better Media Handling in Core

Dries conducted a survey prior to his State of Drupal presentation at Boston Drupalcon 2008, and number one on the top ten (or 11) list of what would make THE KILLER DRUPAL 7 Release was "Better media handling".

Let me repeat that. Better media handling.

People have done really amazing stuff in contrib, but it is difficult (if not impossible in many cases) for developers to coordinate the use of files, as there is no good means for file handling in the core of Drupal. Thus, we have several dozen (or more) media modules doing some small part, or even duplicating functionality, sometimes out of necessity.

We need (better) media and file handling in Drupal core. In particular, there has been a patch for a hook_file in the queue for over a year, which has been in the Patch Spotlight (for the second time, no less) since May! (And has been RTBC several times during that process...) Come on folks.

One of the powers of Drupal is its system of hooks. We have hooks to modify nodes, to notify changes to user objects, to alter nearly any data (such as forms and menus). Noticeably absent is a consistent handling for files or any sort of notification. We need hook_file.

So goal Number One: get media handling in core. The means? Add hook_file and make files into a 1st class Drupal object. We'll be creating a test suite for functionality in the hook_file patch to validate it and "grease the wheels" to get it committed.

The other goals of this sprint pale in comparison to the first in utility, but are still highly desirable and worthwhile.

Number Two: Refactor File Functionality in Core

As an extension to the first goal, there is a lot of inconsistency with how Drupal currently handles files. For instance, in some areas a function may return an object, and in others a string. Additionally, some functions are misnamed, or try to do too much to be useful as a file API.

Some specific examples: for what it does, file_check_directory may be better suited as something like file_check_writable, or maybe even split into that and file_check_make_writable. Also, for instance, file_scan_directory needs to return file objects, rather than the current associative array (keyed on the provided key) of objects with "path", "basename", and "name" members corresponding to the matching files. (The function does what it needs to, but the returned objects have keys not corresponding to anything else used in core.)

So goal Number Two: refactor file functionality in core. The means? Go through and check for (and fix!) existing file functionality for documentation and consistency.

Number Three: Spruce up Existing Contributed Media Modules

There are several much needed multimedia modules that have not yet been upgraded to Drupal 6 (or which are still in heavy progress). This includes (but is not limited to) Image Field, Image API, and Embedded Media Field. Additionally, some major improvements can be made, both to these, and to other essentials, such as the Image module, such as creating a migration path from Image to Image Field (once that module is stable).

So goal Number Three: spruce up existing contributed media modules. The means? Get these modules upgraded!

I want to recognize the valiant and heroic efforts made by everyone to date, as fortunately, there has already been significant progress on all these fronts. That makes our job (relatively) easy. In some respects, we just need to finish up the jobs that have already been started.

Thus, drewish declared this week the Media Code Sprint!

We need your help. If you are a developer, or want to be a developer, jump on in! If you aren't ready to develop, or consider yourself too new for that, you can still help test patches and functionality. Jump on in! And please, even if you don't know how to apply a patch, you can still help with documentation and other small (but important) tasks. Jump on in!

If you're in Portland, You Have No Excuse®. If not, you can jump into #drupal in IRC any time you're available.

The official dates for the sprint are today (Wednesday July 23, 2008) through Saturday (the 26th). We'll be online and working most of that time. I'll make sure we continue to post progress as the week develops.

Of course, as is the wonderful nature of Drupal, this is an ongoing process. Even if we achieve our stated goals, there will always be more.

Thanks,
Aaron Winborn
