I just committed GeoNames for D6. There are a few new functions thrown in there with some useful information; continent codes, country info and US states. I have rewritten some of the code to get rid of the module_invoke_all calls and reduce the number of components in the module...
There are probably several bugs; please check it out and post issues with the bugs you find...
