Introduce ChinaOpen

Three months into planning, overcoming all kinds of odds and challenges (including the latest challenge of the Chinese firewall!) -- we are pressing ahead with ChinaOpen.

And on the eve of returning to China to iron out the logistic details, I would like to point you to http://www.china-osl.com and watch the Flash-video, which captures in essence, our message, spirit and goal of our ChinaOpen initiative.

In short, this summer, for 2-months, we will round up 50-200 Chinese students to work on Open-Source projects from worldwide. Currently in two tracks:
1. Drupal, and
2. Adobe – ColdFusion, Flex and AIR

While the web-site is NOT complete, that it really is a “Development snapshot” (with Drupal/Flex), that the details such as how to submit an idea, and “legal terms” as well as the schedule is not even finished. I would like you: my friends, colleagues and acquaintances, to help me get the words out there, so that you can understand what we are up to – and hopefully through you, we can get various ideas/projects prepared for the students to work on.

I will be back in 4-weeks, at which time we will blow the roofs off via a developer conference in the Washington DC Convention Center for which we are sponsoring, under the ChinaOpen logo, (probably) complete with Chinese lion-dancing.

Let’s work together to change China, for the better.

Kind regards,
John Zhu

This is an incrediably good idea! Really hope it makes it and really happens!
China is behind on OpenSource and this could change that and help integrate with developers and technology enterprises worldwide. -Bruce

Keep us posted on this! I second that it's a great idea, and I can't wait to hear about what you decide to work on with the students and what they think of Drupal. Safe travels!

1st Drupal Project already!

Thank you, for the encouragements.

And we received the 1st potential project already -- and it is a very fascinating idea -- a politics/political policy yet social-network like concept. I feel like I should be calling the "Strategist" at D-seeds already!

:-)

Please keep the ideas coming!

That was great.This idea

Update

john.zhu - Sat, 2008-05-24 07:52

Greetings from Beijing, after helping out Drupal Camp Shanghai http://www.flickr.com/photos/26922124@N04/sets/72157605225583425/

After some intense lobbying, I am being introduced to (at least) 5 universities next week to drum up the students. So the event is moving forward.

Which is why I want to reiterate my call for projects.

And in fact, to this extent, I am also looking for "strategists" who can provide some background/support. For example, I have received 2 projects so far, both of which I feel that I could use some "strategists" to help out, because at World ZhuLu, we do technical work.

So, D-seeds :-) and/or anyone else out there interested?

Performance related tasks

John:

As you know, we're working hard to scale our site to millions of page views a day. If you take on a task that is performance related - SOLR, CARROT2, database replication, caching, CDN management, etc - we can help with oversight / strategy issues.
