new utility module: File MIME type

I got frustrated with files uploaded via the Upload module being assigned seemingly random MIME types, depending on the client that originally uploaded the file. So I made a little utility module -- http://drupal.org/project/filemime -- that may be useful for anyone using the Upload module. It rewrites the MIME type for each file upload based on a server-side mime.types file and/or custom settings.

It hasn't been heavily tested yet so please file an issue if you find any..

Scholarships available for programmers to spend year studying journalism

A little off-topic, but it seems to me there could be a nice fit with this initiative– code tools for journalists while learning more about being a journalist: Still seeking coders interested in journalism.

How to set up IP anonymity for authors?

Hello,

I'm trying to set s a basic indymedia-style site in a very short period of time (days). The most important thing should be that anonymous users can publish political news anonymously -- and by this I mean that not only will the users be able to publish their stories without prior registration, but, importantly, that their IP addresses and locations must be impossible to trace. Because of the current political situation, it is very important that the users are guaranteed that it is no-way that the governement will be able to trace their true identities!!!

Please help -- what do I need in order to set up absolute anonymity for people who are submitting news? I've started setting up the basic site using Drupal 6.1 , but it looks like because of lack of modules and pressure of time, I will need to set it up using drupal 5.7. Please tell me how to set up anonymity in both cases.

Additional info: there will be "Most Recent" and "Most Popular" news -- the content credibility will be mostly governed by a system of Up/Down Vote by visitors (like on Digg.com) -- "Confirm as true", "Refute as lies". The rest will be managed automatically through taxonomies.

My knowledge of Drupal is intermediatary, I've been with it since June 2007 -- I know how to install it and set up most of the important modules, but I'm not much of a coder. And I know almost nothing about internet surveillance.

Thank you for your help!!!

The migration: MIR on Drupal

Hi,

Drupal IMC-CMS IRC Meeting

I wanted to propose to people who are interested in the Imc-CMS drupal evaluation that we are trying to get together by December 1st, that we have a meeting on irc.indymedia.org the #drupal-dev channel to discuss the process and Drupal for Indymedia in general.

I will try to facilitate it if no one else does. What I would like to cover is related to creating a install profile for Indymedia or at least trying to come up with best practices and what we need to work on to improve the usability of Drupal for IMC's around the world.

Drupal for Indymedia - a comprehensive review/proposal

As a result of the recent TechMeet meeting that happened last Sunday, it has been decided to revive the Imc-CMS discussion and to try and pick a CMS to focus indymedia developer attention to.

I volunteered to try and coordinate it with whoever else wants to help.

They are trying to have this info ready by December 1st.

The other teams are the IndyPlone and a lot of IMCistas trying to develop a code-base from scratch with CakePHP.

The goal:

work on an environment they assigment for and investigate it

collect the pros and cons

perform some customizations (according to indymedia needs)

present it to the rest in 1 month

This is what we need to work on.

http://www.techmeet.org/txt/CMSWhatWeHave and
http://www.techmeet.org/txt/CMSWhatWeWant

Here are responses that people made.
http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/ImcBoston - has a section about moving over from Dada to Drupal
http://lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/imc-cms/2007-January/0126-lq.html -
is a post about Dada-Drupal but most of the links are down and the IMC is still on Dada from what I can tell. I e-mailed the author to see if they had usable code.

Development will be coordinated via e-mail on imc-cms@lists.indymedia.org and #cms but I think that a repository for Drupal specific docs and analysis would be useful. I will also post this to the Indymedia group on http://groups.drupal.org.

The next step is setting up a meeting on IRC for everyone interested. I'm on EST - in the US, and I know that Ekes is in CET in Europe and I remember their being quite a few devs in Australia years ago when I was trying to organize this.

Who wants to help with Team Drupal ?

a reportback from DrupalCon Barcelona 2007

Here are some reports from DrupalCon Barcelona!

We had representatives of uk/nl, hungary, be, indybay & beirut imc present -- the conference as a whole had almost 450 people. of course we also met up with local barcelona techies who do use drupal -- they were just too busy to make it to drupalcon so we met up at a hacklab ;)

The new Drupal 6, CCK, Views, FormAPI, Panels, etc. will be awesome -- but not without your help ;) as always you can help with user interface suggestions, documentation, testing, etc. etc.

We had a small BoF session where we talked about our own experiences building indymedia drupal sites. indymedia.be for example has setup their front page with a number of views blocks, using taxonomy to put their features in different places on the front page. I suggested nodequeue module as a good replacement for this type of setup -- create a nodequeue view for each area on your frontpage.

there was no amazing breakthrough on media asset management (images/audio/video & files in general) at our BoF or drupalcon as a whole. However, the in-development Asset Manager module looks very promising. See http://drupal.org/project/am I missed this session so maybe someone can fill us in..

Some drupal news sites were reviewed including nyobserver.com, which has an innovative "Edition" content type which they use to build, preview and publish each edition of the front page and other section pages. This type of setup could be useful for indymedia sites that want more control over previewing and publishing their features. There was an entire session on "Drupal and the future of news" http://barcelona2007.drupalcon.org/node/423

There were good sessions on PHP5 and object-oriented programming (incl. PDO and SimpleXML). Drupal 7 will finally be built on PHP5!

Some new/in-development drupal sites were demoed with various features that indymedia sites may need, such as a theme that supports both LTR and RTL text. supposedly this will be even easier in Drupal 6..

Some cool drupal site management tools were presented, for example, AutoPilot, a web-based interface where you have an internal drupal site that manages deployments/upgrades/etc. on other sites. And Drool, a python-based tool that can do all sorts of random things from the command line, even build a theme (hard to explain.. u'll have to watch the session..)

In the off hours, it was the Festes de la Merce -- the biggest street festival of the year in barcelona ;)

Indymedia install profile.. ok it doesn't exist yet. But we have a lot of useful tools in place:

hidden module provides transparent editorial process for both
newswire and comments

nodequeue module can be used to separate newswire, features, etc.

panels and views can be used to build the various pages.

content translation should be taken care of by i18n module?

The main area to work on will be integrating something like Asset Manager or whatever is "the" solution for building content types with support for attaching and managing media files.

Going forward hopefully we can have some IRC meetings to coordinate work on install profile etc. which, at this point i suppose might be built on Drupal 6..

I don't think the next DrupalCon has been announced yet but stay tuned..

I am posting videos of the sessions I attended at http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=subject:%22drupalconbarcelona200... I didn't by any means attend all the best sessions, as there was already a webcam in the main room (I still have some more videos to upload...)

Santa Barbara IMC to use Drupal

Hi all,

I am pretty much the sole admin here at http://sbindymedia.org. We are still running dada (in archive mode) and I have been trying to put together a Drupal install that would suit our needs. (Trying for many months now). A suitable place to host is one of the last issues. (and then there's the dada import, eesh).

We started with a 4.7 install, but as 5 grows I'm highly considering switching to 5.1 and dealing with any lack of modules. Is there a list of issues related to getting 5.1 up and running as an IMC cms? Do people recommend sticking with 4.7 or just switching?

Can we at least get a wiki story going with all of the IMC groups that are running Drupal and list which version and modules they have installed? I realize some of this is on the docs.imc.org server, but it's down and this would be information that the larger Drupal community could use also.

The last part I've really struggled with lately is finding an IMC friendly Drupal hosting server. The server we lease is way outdated and needs a complete overhaul to run Drupal. Does anyone have recommendations on where we could host an install that is friendly to IMCs (logging, large upload size, etc).

onward!

-jon

hidden module

kia ora koutou...

i created a module called hidden to have something in between the Drupal states of published and unpublished.
each article (node) or comment has a link 'hide'/'unhide' if the user has the permission to 'mark as hidden'. after having supplied a reason, the obscured items are available unter /hidden.

current caveats:
- comments for hidden items are disabled
- in admin/content/node, the hidden articles appear only as unpublished

dunno how to use the module infrastructure (without patching core modules) to get that straight.

have a go and give me feedback, please.
NOTE: the file is not an OpenOffice document. please rename it to hidden.tar.gz! the server restricts uploads of files to certain file extensions.

Moderation in drupal - code attached!

I've made some modifications to the nmoderation module to allow for indymedia style moderation in drupal. It isn't ideologically 'nice' mainly due to the way parts of the drupal core are implemented. I have contacted the author of nmoderation about getting the patches into the module, but he hasn't responded, so we might want to look at forking it into a seperate moderation module - people's thoughts?

Instructions:
1) install drupal. 4.7.3 (or possibly a later 4.7 branch). I think CVS/4.8 changes a few fundamentals, so this is unlikely to work.

2) install the following modules: nmoderation, views, votingapi, taxonomy_block. You will want others for other IMC functionality; these are the ones you need for moderation and access of moderated content.

3) download the attached patch, and apply it to modules/nmoderation/nmoderation.module.

4) Set up access control. We have used the following user roles (others may be appropriate for your site):
* Anonymous - can view everything, and post to the low priority newswire.
* Authenticated - Anonymous + has access to certain site features (blogs, themes, profile etc). Can save user options
* Trusted User - Authenticated + posts go straight to high priority newswire.
* Editor - Trusted User + can promote low priority news to high priority news, and post/edit features.
* Admin - Can do everything
User roles are complicated and detailed - be sure you know what you are doing, or copy someone else. Crucially, moderating users must have the 'nmoderate votes' permission set.

5) Set up Node Moderation:
A) In Administer -> Settings -> nmoderation:
1. For node types, choose story and comment (unless you want others too)
2. No to Promote/Unpublish on thresholds
3. Yes to Hide comments below threshold
B) In Administer -> node moderation:
1. Choose the tab 'moderation votes'
2. Type in four names of votes. The scores associated with these are not entered yet, but can be written in the label if desired so the voter knows the score. The weight column is for determining which label appears first - it does not affect the actual score.
3. In 'moderation roles', give each user a starting score. The initial set up is that the high priority newswire is score 2 or more, so trusted (and higher) users should be 2 or more. 0 or less defaults to hidden, so non-trusted users should probably be put at 1.
4. In 'moderation matrix', put the actual value for each vote in. e.g. Great -> 2, Good -> 1, Bad -> -1, Terrible -> -2. Higher privileged users can be given more clout here, if desired.
5. In 'viewing thresholds' put the types of views you wish users to have. e.g. High Quality Post -> 2, All non-hidden posts -> 1, All posts -> 0. Or something like that. Then set the default to what you want users to have by default.

6) Set up Views: Views are complex and powerful. It would be nice to provide pre-rolled views for basic things. But we haven't got them yet. So try to learn a little about how they work, or everything above will be for nought.

Clear as mud? Feel free to ask questions here or you can try #oceania on irc.indymedia.org

Moderation/Voting

I'm currently working on implementing moderation functionality to allow for hidden posts, and seperating newswires into 'free-for-all' and 'trusted users' in the hope of making quality content more visible, while still allowing open and anonymous publishing. I'm currently modifying the node moderation module to allow moderation of comments (and perhaps throw some AJAX in there for niceness).

Initially, this will be designed to let only editors or admins to moderate. Later I'd like to see it move to a more democratic/community driven system. Can I hear what existing admins/editors would want from a content moderation system?

Status of Drupal for IMC platform

Installation:
The current version of Drupal is 4.7 as of this writing. It can be downloaded at drupal.org and installed on any server running PHP & MySQL with little problem. The installation process is well documented but there are a lot of variables involved in the configuration once you have it up. This document will mainly try to address these choices and present possibilities and examples from various IMCs.

Module Installation:
Once you have the core of Drupal installed you will probably want to install some modules. This is where the drupal experience can become quite confusing, exciting and time consuming. There are a wide variety of modules available for download from drupal.org, and many of them are constantly updating and adding features. Some of them duplicate functions and others hardly work. For an indymedia site to work we will want to enable a few of them at least in order to give multi-media functionality to the drupal site. Here are a few modules I'd recommend.

Audio module: This will allow people to upload their audio and has a built in flash player that allows people to upload it from the site. One of the features its currently lacking but could be getting coded at the moment is the ability to link to external audio files. This would be helpful if you are using an external file host such as archive.org or want to link to a file hosted on another IMC.

Image module: This module handles images and creates automatic thumbnails. It currently lacks mass upload capability, but there is an image publishing module.

Video module: This module will allow you to link to videos from a wide variety of sources and even creates a feed that can be used to create a videopodcast or channel that can be used in Democracy Player.

Event module: This enables you to have a calendar of events on your site. It is very functional but requires you create a content type for events.

There are a lot of other modules that could be experimented with and included in an IMC site but these 3 should enable basic functionality, the next issue that needs to be addressed is layout, content creation and categorization. This is where you can really make or break your drupal site. A improperly configured site can be very confusing and with open publishing can get really cluttered.
I have made some mistakes with the CbusImc.org site and it needs a lot of help in the clean-up department but I will discuss some of the concepts I've had and tried to implement.

Perhaps we should come up with an indymedia specific guide to modules that are essential. If anyone wants to expand upon this, feel free to edit this. I know that the views and CCK modules have a lot of potential for usage but are both under heavy development.

Categories:
This is the taxonomy module that enables all of your articles, and media to be sorted by your site.

I created a category for Scope which basically determines which newswire content is put into, rather a local, regional, national or global newswire. It seems many IMC sites have simply an open publishing newswire and then let the editorial collective choose to categorize the content properly. Many times I will have to edit content and change the newswire because people are just cross-posting their conspiracy theory/rants onto as many IMCs as they can, and they don't bother to do things like categorize it properly.

Also on the site is a category for Source, the intention behind this was to seperate original content from republished or linked material. Another thought was whether the IMC should make the site link to other sites ala slash dot rather than just cutting and pasting news articles directly from the corporate media.

I just read some documents on the docs.indymedia.org site about how to create a hidden newswire within Drupal.

I also think that a lot of Drupal sites would create a taxonomy for different categories such as labour/environment/protest/anti-globalization. We experimented with Free Tagging for this but found that many people just used it as a way to write a summary or another tag-line and didn't understand it as it was presented with the coma seperated values.

Questions about the front page, blocks, and different news wires are definently up in the air. I currently have our site set-up to display only on the front-page a taxonomy based block display which shows all articles based upon taxonomy and then when people click on content it clears away all extra blocks to show the content full screen. This was done by marking the blocks just to show up on the front-page. It might not be the best way of doing it.

A couple of ideas that never got developed because they would require some more complex coding but could be very useful for IMC sites would be to create a node type that other nodes would link under so that articles and content relating to a certain story could be found in one place. This would be useful for events specific coverage such as a protest, as well as ongoing investigations where people would want to compile data before they write an article or where people could chime in with data. This may be possible with the content creation kit as it allows, node relation as a field but I haven't explored it yet.
This would also make it easy for people to have ongoing discussions about things, link to other press articles about stories without losing the focus from creation of independent news and giving a non-corporate perspective on things.

Also important is the anonymization of drupal, this can be accomplished a few ways although the internal drupal watchdog logs can be set to expire at whatever date the actual Apache logs are what needs to be addressed.

I'd like to actually have a meeting or discuss some projects, developments and compare sites and themes for Drupal because a lot of work is dependent upon the techie configuring the site and knowing drupal unless we come up with a recipe or HOWTO get started with Drupal, because compared to many of the other IMC codebases drupal is intimidating because it is so flexible, and isn't packaged out of the box to be an IMC site. This is apparent by looking at the variety of looks and feels from current IMCs running drupal as oppossed to SF-active or Dada.

If someone else wants to try and schedule an IRC chat I will mark it on my calendar, I can be available at odd hours US-EST because it seems like many of the IMC drupal developers are in Australia.

That's all for now
