Groups vs. Multiple Drupal installations

Hello there!
If you want to give a user total control over a site (his/her site, area, or whatever you want to call it), what should be better? Creating a group for each user, as in drupal Groups, or creating a multisite installation?

When I say "total control" I mean everything: Blogs, polls, newsletters, have a fan´s group (not buudies, I mean actual users that are created just to enter his/her personal site).

Would multiple sites installations become a huge monster, that no server could manage?

What are your thoughts?

Rosamunda

Hey Guys,

have you seen ProjectPier? Its a pretty well developed project management program similar to Basecamp. I'd be interested to hear everyone's comments. Also, whether you think this could be better implemented in Drupal or things you think are missing, etc?

The module webfm (web file manager) perfect, cool for sharing files in CWE

In our first implementation of this module, all is running perfectly
http://drupal.org/project/webfm

you can share files from a web and a ftp folders.

simply required (dreaming):
- permission for folders (different folders with different permission by role)
- description of files (50 characters)
- webfm integration to groups
- Open Office extensions odt, odp, ods,.. basicaly

Ferran

This case of high quality can provide a good example to learn by other modules that dont have enough checking, promises a lot of features and fault a lot in critical errors.

CCK versus Taxonomy for node referencing

I had been looking for a way to have a two-way reference between 2 nodes. You would need this for basic CRM functionality e.g. to be able to link a person to a company or an action to a project. This way you can go to a person and see what company he is part of or go to that company and see all the people that are working in that company.

First I tried to implement this with taxonomy. This however did not give all the functionality I wanted, without any additional modules, you would have to type the name of the parent twice, first as a title for the parent node and then to create the taxonomy for that project.

The NAT (node auto term) module goes in the right direction to solve this problem, by creating a term from the title of a chosen content type when creating a new node. You still however somehow have to connect that term to the parent node that generated it. I'm sure that you could solve this with some php, but the connection wouldn't give information about who is the parent and who's the child...

The other way to link things together is through a node reference field in CCK. A node reference however is only one directional and requires an existing node to link to. So if you got a new contact for a not yet existing company, you would have to first create that company and then create that person separately.

I solved the problem with a combination of CCK, Views and addnode (requires Subform Element):
-First enable the addnode module, this will give you a widget that allows you to either select an existing node or create a new node of the chosen content type (e.g. a company).
-Then you create the parent and child content types. In the child content type you add a node reference field for the parent content type. This creates a clickable link going from the child to the parent.
-To create a reference to all child nodes from the parent node you use a views block.
*Create a new view
*enable block view
*add fields for "node: view link" and any other information you want to display
*add the appropriate nodereference as an argument
*give in the following code in the "Argument Handling Code" area:

$args[0] = arg(1);

and that's how you can get an elegant connection between a parent-node and it's children.

Credit goes to Paul Resnick who posted the above snipet at http://drupal.org/node/70145 and to all the wonderfull people that created these great modules.

This online collaboration environment is powered by kGroups.
SANTEC's online collaboration environment is powered by kGroups External link, a group-based collaboration system built on the same application framework as the e-learning platform KEWL.NextGen. This site has a rich set of features, most of which are not enabled in order to keep the site simple and easy to navigate.
kGroups External link is a product of the African Virtual Open Initiatives and Resources External link (AVOIR) project and the Free Software Innovation Unit External link at the University of the Western Cape External link. Documentation for kGroups is under development, and will be downloadable from the AVOIR site when it is done.
Dojo is showing us what we have to do and how to do

Dojo group http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-dojo has setup an incredible system online to provide - Lessons, Help desk or another online service - to a group or team (10-20 participants). The environment with two basic channel of communication is actually used weekly for a public presentation by the host of the session or teacher. The sessions are announced previously, publishing also the schematic agenda of the session, in the forum of the group – normally Sunday at 20:00CET.
The participants – the students- have to open an IRC session to watch the blackboard – the screen of the teacher – in the left and a typical chat in the column of the right. A second skypecast session is opened to listening the host explanations – or the music in the awaiting time.
https://skypecasts.skype.com/skypecasts/
This open discussion provide speed up the feedbacks and promote the participation. This process start discussing the issue of the lesson, the preparation of the agenda, the presentation of the participants and finally the sessions ending with a question and answers turn.
This is exactly what the the groupware group needs to implement as module or integrated application in addition to the rest of Drupal features for accomplish all the egroupware needs as Collaboative/Cooperative Working Environment.
I hope that the Dojo guys will be so kind and collaborative with the rest of Drupal community, for sharing their knowledge to support the installation of other IRC server and the VNC clients.
http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html
The first feedback of our webhost is that VNC only work in a individual powerful webserver!! Which are the applications that is needed to install in the server and in the client (the teacher PC). It can be used by different groups? Are Skype communication so width to run with all the IRC sessions? What additional features can be install in order to improve the feedback of the participants?
Well this and other question are now opened to be discussed and transferred to the collaborative community of open-source software development. This can be one of the key trails to evaluate the quality of the Drupal community.

Drupal 5.0 for a Collaborative Working Environment (CWE) for the VISiYES.eu (EC co-funded 100KEUR)

Good news for the Groupware group and Drupal community!!
After to be approved the project VISIYES (eTutoring) by the EC DG Education, The consortium, in concrete the leader of the WP4 Development of the platform, NOVASOFT.es choose Drupal 5.0 as Collaborative Working Environment (CWE) for the project
../.. to summarise, Drupal provides a mechanism to:
- allow the team to share files (library),
- show events and milestones on a calendar,
- show summaries of project members and their roles,
- communicate using: forums, e-mail, IM, skype, podcasts, vodcasts, blogs
- create polls,
- share slideshows
already many of the tools the VISiYES toolkit may want to incorporate.

Actually VISiYES has the first prototype build on http://VISiYES.eu
The next steps is to
- Migrate to the final webhosting of the WP4 leader selecting the modules needed to manage the consortium and the project;
- Open a Discussion about the Learning, Training and Marketplace platform for Entrepreneurs and Micro-companies
- Concrete tasks and participation in the Kick-off of March in Delft
- Invite to all Entrepreneurs and Micro-companies to carry out a 2 weeks training and the evaluation report should be paid depending on the EU state.

This can be an opportunity to our group to propose ideas, modules, application to integrate in the Drupal groupware or Collaborative Working Environment (CWE) solution.

We will keep punctual posted in all collaborative and participative activities and raised opportunities to get funds.

Drupal towards a CWE to build and exploit a VISiYES on Net space to work, learn, trade and live entrepreneurs and micro-companies.

opengroupware.org ??!!!

Does anybody know about opengroupware ??

Maybe it could be interesting to study how to make opengroupware.org tools available through a Drupal interface (maybe built with Flex 2 SDK for the client side while using Services/Amfphp drupal modules in the server side)

It's just an Idea, I haven't had the time to study the project by myself...

Regards,
More Info . . .

The things I see as really being key to making this happen are CCK, Views and install profiles. Meaning that the next version of Drupal should be really ripe for pushing an effort like this forward, though I'm sure there will be lots of tweaking and customizing to get it 'just right'.

When I'm not late for an appointment, I'll outline what I believe are the key things a groupware implementation should include.
