The things I see as really being key to making this happen are CCK, Views and install profiles. Meaning that the next version of Drupal should be really ripe for pushing an effort like this forward, though I'm sure there will be lots of tweaking and customizing to get it 'just right'.
When I'm not late for an appointment, I'll outline what I believe are the key things a groupware implementation should include.
Groupware definition
I was intrigued by this group and so I started by obtaining a good definition of "groupware".

Clarification of Groupware goals
I'm interested in Groupware systems, too. And I have a large concept with many outstanding ideas for a next generation Groupware application. We're currently using a small set of that concept in a custom developed application of our agency and will start to merge the whole thing to Drupal in the next months.
Since this is a really big concept and there are many things to design and develop I'm rather looking for a way to create a closed group which will benefit from long-term premium Groupware services. If someone is interested please leave me a message.
