We have a special guest presenter for our August meeting. Emma Jane Hogbin will join us and share an encore presentation of her DrupalCamp Talk "Moving In: or how to port your content from * to Drupal."

This topic was a huge hit at DrupalCamp and we are thrilled to be able to have Emma present it with lots of extra time for Q&A.

You've decided to make the switch to Drupal. Fantastic! Only one problem: you have to figure out how to move your content from the old database to Drupal. Although there are many import/export modules available it's sometimes good to know what's happening behind the scenes. This session will walk you through my adventures of porting community Web sites into Drupal.

The talk will include:

* exporting usable data from your old site;
* using CCK to create the right home for your new content;
* using existing import modules (specifically: import html, node import and user import); and
* importing content "by hand" using MySQL command line magic.

We will also touch on some of the headaches I ran into in keeping data synchronized on very active community sites during the development phase.

This session is perfect for people who are preparing to migrate their Web site to Drupal and also people who are new to database management but want to know more about how things work behind the scenes. Of course if you're already a pro at data migration, please bring your stories and suggestions!

A while back someone in Toronto had created a group called "Drupalcon Toronto". Although the group was denied in moderation I wanted to poke my head in the Toronto group to see if there was interest in doing a Drupalcon in Toronto and more-so if there was a group willing to put in the time and effort to pull off a Drupalcon in Toronto. A Drupalcon is a lot of work but we have some great people around the world as well as some established processes to pull it off. Maybe there are some great Drupaladians(?) that want to put together an awesome Drupalcon in Canada!

The request for proposals has been created with Drupal in mind as the chosen CMS, but other systems will be considered provided that they meet our listed requirements. We anticipate that most of our functional requirements can be met using existing Drupal modules, but we seek an experienced CMS developer to select, configure and if necessary customize those modules.

Hello, my name is Jordan and I am currently a web designer/developer focusing on project / production management.
I am also Co-Founder of PHUG (PHP Toronto User Group) which is a newly created, vastly growing open source community that caters to both designers and developers.
Currently we hold weekly Monday meetings, hold monthly events promoting ideas and projects, and contribute to many open source projects.
Although we have many projects of our own, we are currently working with organizations like Mozilla, Miro, FlashInTo, and so on.

After walkah's presentation on Drupal 6 Themeing, I ported and contributed a theme to drupal.org. Some really great information that inspired me to contribute a new theme. I did a relatively detailed write up in the showcase forums.

http://guide.conecta.it/ which in turn links to 2 PDF documents produced by FLOSSMETRICs and OpenTTT (Both European Union commissioned bodies).

The first is the FLOSS Guide (2Mb) (cc) FLOSSMETRICS - which is an education paper on FLOSS. Which could give people ideas on how to market FLOSS in general. It even includes a section of FLOSS business models.

The second is the FLOSS Catalog (20Mb) (cc) FLOSSMETRICS and OpenTTT - which, as the name suggests, is a fairly comprehensive catalog of open source projects that businesses can consider adopting. Of course Drupal is in there in the CMS section.

Brave the ice and snow and join us for some warming Drupal fun in what should be a packed meeting! We're going to begin the meeting with a presentation, discussion from Bob Fabian about his work rolling out Drupal for CIPS - Canada's Association for IT Professionals. We'll also spend some time talking more about the upcoming Drupal 6 release, specifically (by request) some of the developer API changes that will be required for upgrading modules to the next version.

Drupal and CIPS

CIPS is Canada's Association for IT Professionals. It's been around since 1958 and has accumulated a dog's breakfast of websites at the National, Provincial, and Local level. Money's tight, but something has got to change. We're moving towards an early 2008 launch of a Drupal environment for the society's websites. Initially, National (cips.ca), a few Provinces, and selected local Sections will be coming online. This presentation will describe the journey thus far, and the expected future journey.

Bob Fabian is a volunteer with CIPS and chairs the CIPS Web Advisory Panel. Bob was the first Chair of Computer Science at York University and has held senior positions in industry and consulting. He's now a (semi-retired) independent consultant. He has published dozens of articles in the trade press and is a frequent speaker at seminars and conferences. (fabian.ca)

Drupal Hosting - Notes from the November 2007 Meetup

This is intended as a stub wiki page, add to it as you'd like.
(I hope someone took better notes than I at last weeks meeting)

What we as a group value in a hosting provider:

Consistency
- Service Level Agreements (SLA)
- Good documentation of escalation procedures
- 24/7 priority support available
- security is easily auditable
Performance
Uptime
Shell Access
Management tools (cPanel, etc).

(not all these tools are valued by everyone equally - it depends on how much system administration you prefer to do yourself)
(personal note: I don't put much stock in SLAs - they always seem to come with big exceptions, and mostly are a checkmark that is required by businesses, but don't actually reflect a companies track record or expertise in keeping your site up)

Hosting providers recommended at the meeting; which allow Virtual Private Servers (VPS) or Dedicated Server (DS).

Simple Performance Tweaks

Page caching - Very efficient if your site has a lot of anonymous users, part of Drupal core. Turn on under "performance" in admin settings. Most pages are stored in their entirety in the database, meaning displaying a page only requires a single database call for the content.
Host Database on same server as website - Recommended for small to medium sites, *(VPS or DS likely necessary) - reduces network latency issues and one more thing to mysteriously go wrong/slow. Limits scalability, so large sites usually need a separate db server.
OpCode cache for PHP - An opcode cache pre-compiles PHP and saves it in memory, reducing the amount of time to read/execute code. Particularly useful with Drupal because of its modular design (i.e., frequently accessed core code) - can reduce execution time by 90%. (Detailed Description by IBM)
*(VPS or DS likely necessary as it requires a custom PHP install, not generally supported by traditional shared hosting)
