Waterloo Drupal Group Meeting: Friday 01 August 2008. Porting * to Drupal

We have a special guest presenter for our August meeting. Emma Jane Hogbin will join us and share an encore presentation of her DrupalCamp Talk "Moving In: or how to port your content from * to Drupal."

This topic was a huge hit at DrupalCamp and we are thrilled to be able to have Emma present it with lots of extra time for Q&A.

You've decided to make the switch to Drupal. Fantastic! Only one problem: you have to figure out how to move your content from the old database to Drupal. Although there are many import/export modules available it's sometimes good to know what's happening behind the scenes. This session will walk you through my adventures of porting community Web sites into Drupal.

The talk will include:

* exporting usable data from your old site;
* using CCK to create the right home for your new content;
* using existing import modules (specifically: import html, node import and user import); and
* importing content "by hand" using MySQL command line magic.

We will also touch on some of the headaches I ran into in keeping data synchronized on very active community sites during the development phase.

This session is perfect for people who are preparing to migrate their Web site to Drupal and also people who are new to database management but want to know more about how things work behind the scenes. Of course if you're already a pro at data migration, please bring your stories and suggestions!

Webmaster | Energy Probe

Energy Probe, one of Canada's leading environmental groups, seeks a Drupal programmer to develop and maintain its website and those of its sister organizations, including Probe International and Green Beanery, a non-profit coffee company whose revenues supports the work of Probe International.

This position would especially suit someone with an interest in the issues we focus on, including nuclear power, alternate energy, and the Third World's environment. A love of coffee, next to oil the world's most traded commodity, would also help. Green Beanery's operation has dual goals. It not only strives to bring the public extraordinary coffees and coffee-making products from around the world, it also works to right failings in the world-wide coffee industry.

The chief duties in this position involve developing the websites at www.probeinternational.org and www.greenbeanery.ca, and converting the websites of our other sister organizations, The websites include osCommerce shopping carts for the sale of products and services, they generate tax receipts for charitable donations, they manage our newsletters and they manage our relations with members, the press, politicians, and other non-profits.

Energy Probe Research Foundation was founded 30 years ago. The websites, once integrated, will be Canada's largest in the environmental field, offering great opportunities to extend the effectiveness of our charitable work.

You guys thinking about Drupalcon Toronto??

A while back someone in Toronto had created a group called "Drupalcon Toronto". Although the group was denied in moderation I wanted to poke my head in the Toronto group to see if there was interest in doing a Drupalcon in Toronto and more-so if there was a group willing to put in the time and effort to pull off a Drupalcon in Toronto. A Drupalcon is a lot of work but we have some great people around the world as well as some established processes to pull it off. Maybe there are some great Drupaladians(?) that want to put together an awesome Drupalcon in Canada!

The Association is accepting proposals right now on where to host the next North America Drupalcon. If you're interested please get in touch now. The details for submitting a proposal are here. Please contact the Association or myself if you have any questions.

Media Audio - speeches / interviews etc - playable only?
Media Photo - some photos, small artworks, illustrations
Media Video - small video - can be through YouTube?
Links page - various categories of links
Campaigns page - various categories of campaigns
and/or RSS (I would seriously love an explanation of RSS applications!)

Other - future
Podcasts - possibly weekly or bi-weekly postings
Ads??? - possible advertisements and/or public announcements (i don't know if its possible to chose the types of ads one accepts on a site e.g. not-for-profits/cooperatives)

These are the elements that we would want to begin with. Between my partner and I we have ownership over, and are ready to publish:
- roughly 8 articles and other publications
- 5 interviews / speeches in AUDIO we'd like to put up
- two dozen photographs relavent to these publications

And there are more of these I am working on over the summer, such as articles and audio/video for which I need to secure permissions.

Tell us what you have to offer to Drupal Camp

Please don't forget to add your name or nickname besides the item so, we know who you are and contact you for the task you can provide.

Ideas for Ways I can help Drupal Camp (Tell us if any of these are you):

I can help at the registration desk (Ethic)

I can help with lunch cleanup (Ethic)

I know someone that can donate services in kind (printers, designers, etc.)

I know an employer that could sponsor the event

I can provide transportation from my city for others planning on attending

other...

I can bring/donate a wireless router (surge_martin)

I can give a couple of presentations (kbahey, Ethic)

Transportation

I can provide transportation/car-pooling to those around Kitchener/Waterloo/Guelph/Cambridge (kbahey)

I can provide transportation/car-pooling to those around London/St. Thomas/Woodstock (surge_martin)

I can provide transportation/car-pooling to those around Niagara/Hamilton (trevortwining)

Drupal Camp 2008 - What Can My Drupalcamp Do For Me?

Tell us what you'd like to see at this year's drupal camp, in as much detail as you can imagine.

Drupal is

I'd like to have an opening session called "Drupal is" that's three presentations + discussion.
1. Drupal as an open source project - a history.
2. Drupal as a CMS - out-of-the-box perfection.
3. Drupal as an application framework - unimaginable applications.

Case Studies

Killer case study? A case study of (a) Drupal project(s) that showcases the work of local talent.

Theming showcase or case study. Taking a design from idea to full blown theme?

Other things you'd like to see or learn or do...

Flash

I'd like to see a session on strategies for integrating Flash and Drupal. It could include discussion of basic Flash embedding using modules like Flash Node and SWFTools, and then move on to deeper integration by actually passing data between the two by using things like Services/AMFPHP.

Drupal Project Management

There was a presentation in Boston like this. I'm interested in hearing others' experiences of the non-technical part of creating web sites with Drupal - things like requirements gathering, technical plans, collaboration, Q&A, follow-up, evaluation, etc.

Drupal Business Development

How do you run a successful Drupal consulting business?

We'll be spending the March meetup looking at the internationalization / multilingual features in Drupal 6.0 . Should be an interesting topic for anyone building bilingual sites here in Canada!

RFP to Install and Configure Drupal | Institute for Work & Health

The Institute for Work & Health is seeking proposals for the installation and configuration of a web content management system that will serve as the back end of a new design for our public-facing website. The request for proposals has been created with Drupal in mind as the chosen CMS, but other systems will be considered provided that they meet our listed requirements. We anticipate that most of our functional requirements can be met using existing Drupal modules, but we seek an experienced CMS developer to select, configure and if necessary customize those modules.

The visual design of the site will be created in-house, in collaboration with a separately contracted designer. The site's textual content will also be created in-house. The CMS developer will be responsible for producing a back-end system that can be styled by a designer and that allows us to input and publish our content the way we specify.

Preference will be given to developers in the Greater Toronto Area, with whom the Institute can form a local, long-term working relationship.

Deadline for Proposals:
17:00 EST Monday, March 24, 2008.

Project Dates:
CMS development will occur between April and July 2008.

The full RFP is available from the Institute in various formats:

Junior Drupal Software Engineer | Toronto Startups Ltd.

Dear Candidate,

We are a small startup organization founded in late 2006 which provides software for churches using the Drupal platform.
We are currently in the development stage of the final half of the software, but have clients beginning to use it already with reduced functionality.
As we get feedback from these clients and take their comments into account, there are many small changes in the software which need to be addressed in a timely fashion. Most changes are not complex, but some require PHP work in order to modify a specific module's GUI, functionality, or simply wording.

The work will be given on the basis of several days at a time for most weeks, with an expected turnaround time appropriate for the work involved. We aren't slavedrivers :)

More details will be provided upon request.

If you're interested in doing some work with us, shoot me a line! mzielinski@gmail.com

Drupal developer | on behalf of a disability support org

I am working with an organization that serves people with disabilities. They would like to port an existing dynamic web site to Drupal. Due to past disappointing experiences, they would like to start slowly, with a basic Drupal setup, which includes their content, support for events and taxonomy organized data. Some data importing would be involved. They would like to find an experienced developer or shop for the first phase, for first phase rollout in early March, with staged upgrades or customization as required. Some training will be required. Ongoing hosting and support may also be included. A designer is available who can participate in the project for html/graphics/design.

Please contact vid_drupalgig@zooid.org

DrupalCon Boston 2008 : your help is needed

Drupal Boston 2008 is taking place March 3 to March 6, with a code sprint on March 7 at MIT.

See details here http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/

As you can see from the budget below, the attendance fee does not cover all the costs. http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/drupalcon-budget

Therefore, any form of financial support is appreciated. If you are a Drupal user or a Drupal shop, please discuss this with your manager and find ways to spread around the word, so all the costs are covered.

Some tips here http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/can-not-afford-come-think-again

An Introduction

Hello, my name is Jordan and I am currently a web designer/developer focusing on project / production management.
I am also Co-Founder of PHUG (PHP Toronto User Group) which is a newly created, vastly growing open source community that caters to both designers and developers.
Currently we hold weekly Monday meetings, hold monthly events promoting ideas and projects, and contribute to many open source projects.
Although we have many projects of our own, we are currently working with organizations like Mozilla, Miro, FlashInTo, and so on.
We have also launched free workshops throughout the year, hoping to inform people about different open source developments. We do plan on holding a Drupal workshop in the near future.
I think Drupal has become widely popular in the open source community and PHUG is very interested in getting more involved with Drupal and Drupal related projects.

Please visit our website at www.phug.ca
There is a blog and an email on our website if you would like more details or have any questions.....just let them know Jordan sent ya....

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

After walkah's presentation on Drupal 6 Themeing, I ported and contributed a theme to drupal.org. Some really great information that inspired me to contribute a new theme. I did a relatively detailed write up in the showcase forums.

FLOSSMETRICS/OpenTTT guides

I was sent this link
http://guide.conecta.it/ which in turn links to 2 PDF documents produced by FLOSSMETRICs and OpenTTT (Both European Union commissioned bodies).

The first is the FLOSS Guide (2Mb) (cc) FLOSSMETRICS - which is an education paper on FLOSS. Which could give people ideas on how to market FLOSS in general. It even includes a section of FLOSS business models.

The second is the FLOSS Catalog (20Mb) (cc) FLOSSMETRICS and OpenTTT - which, as the name suggests, is a fairly comprehensive catalog of open source projects that businesses can consider adopting. Of course Drupal is in there in the CMS section.

I thought some might be interested in knowing that such a high profile site is using Drupal. It's a hybrid site where the flash nav is being given it's params dynamically from Drupal. The project took about a month to build.

See you at the meet tonight.

Toronto December Meetup

Brave the ice and snow and join us for some warming Drupal fun in what should be a packed meeting! We're going to begin the meeting with a presentation, discussion from Bob Fabian about his work rolling out Drupal for CIPS - Canada's Association for IT Professionals. (click "read more" for full details).

We'll also spend some time talking more about the upcoming Drupal 6 release, specifically (by request) some of the developer API changes that will be required for upgrading modules to the next version.

Time: 6:30 - 8:30 pm Thursday December 13th
Location: Centre for Social Innovation - 215 Spadina Ave, 4th floor [map]

Drupal and CIPS

CIPS is Canada's Association for IT Professionals. It's been around since 1958 and has accumulated a dog's breakfast of websites at the National, Provincial, and Local level. Money's tight, but something has got to change. We're moving towards an early 2008 launch of a Drupal environment for the society's websites. Initially, National (cips.ca), a few Provinces, and selected local Sections will be coming online. This presentation will describe the journey thus far, and the expected future journey.

Bob Fabian is a volunteer with CIPS and chairs the CIPS Web Advisory Panel. Bob was the first Chair of Computer Science at York University and has held senior positions in industry and consulting. He's now a (semi-retired) independent consultant. He has published dozens of articles in the trade press and is a frequent speaker at seminars and conferences. (fabian.ca)

Drupal Hosting - Notes from the November 2007 Meetup

This is intended as a stub wiki page, add to it as you'd like.
(I hope someone took better notes than I at last weeks meeting)

What we as a group value in a hosting provider:

Consistency

Service Level Agreements (SLA)

Good documentation of escalation procedures

24/7 priority support available

security is easily auditable

Performance

Uptime

Shell Access

Management tools (cPanel, etc).

(not all these tools are valued by everyone equally - it depends on how much system administration you prefer to do yourself)
(personal note: I don't put much stock in SLAs - they always seem to come with big exceptions, and mostly are a checkmark that is required by businesses, but don't actually reflect a companies track record or expertise in keeping your site up)

Hosting providers recommended at the meeting; which allow Virtual Private Servers (VPS) or Dedicated Server (DS).

RimuHosting (VPS)

Anarres worker co-operative (Toronto mass-Drupal hosting) - Derek Laventure's venture

Rackspace (VPS)

Rackforce (VPS, Canadian)

Simple Performance Tweaks

Page caching - Very efficient if your site has a lot of anonymous users, part of Drupal core. Turn on under "performance" in admin settings. Most pages are stored in their entirety in the database, meaning displaying a page only requires a single database call for the content.

Host Database on same server as website - Recommended for small to medium sites, *(VPS or DS likely necessary) - reduces network latency issues and one more thing to mysteriously go wrong/slow. Limits scalability, so large sites usually need a separate db server.

OpCode cache for PHP - An opcode cache pre-compiles PHP and saves it in memory, reducing the amount of time to read/execute code. Particularly useful with Drupal because of its modular design (i.e., frequently accessed core code) - can reduce execution time by 90%. (Detailed Description by IBM)
*(VPS or DS likely necessary as it requires a custom PHP install, not generally supported by traditional shared hosting)

An excellent introduction to this topic was written by Khalid Baheyeldin here:
http://2bits.com/articles/tips-on-speeding-up-your-drupal-sites.html

Tonerdrupal2 asked Is there a comprehensive list of Drupal Development Firms?

Well, why don't we, as a group, create one? Lets try to keep it to company name and URL. I think Greater Toronto Area companies would qualify.

Some general information for anyone looking for development companies:
From the Drupal Handbook Hiring a Drupal site developer
