Web Developer | UNITE HERE

Build Internet and Intranet sites for the International Union (UNITE HERE), affiliates and various campaigns.

Maintain and upgrade a variety of existing web properties. Responsibilities include front and back-end code, expert CSS and HTML markup skills, ability to translate design comps into pixel exact templates, expert scripting, database, and solid server skills.

Make recommendations to the Communications Department regarding internet communications platforms, content management systems, design issues, upgrades, and security relating to Internet and Intranet systems. Ability to analyze web hosting,video hosting and email solutions for cost effectiveness.

Knowledge of relational databases.

Job Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

• Work with Graphic Designers to design and maintain consistent look and feel of all web sites and other electronic publications and applications under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Communications.

• Migrate existing sites to Drupal.

• Natural desire to make all developed sites and applications visible to the largest audience possible is a plus. Builds are constructed from the outset to work Mac OSX: Safari 2.x, 3.x, FF 2.x, 3.x. Windows XP and Vista: IE6, IE7, FF 2.x, 3.x.

• Work with and write custom php / mysql / javascript applications that work in all recent browser platforms.

• Ensure that all design elements, templates and finished solutions work with a variety of browser types within the constraints set by development and design.

• Develop standards-compliant static and dynamic websites from Photoshop compositions.

• Work with all departments and affiliates regarding style and approach for all projects. Help train campaign organizers and research staff in how to use our CMS

• Work with communications and campaign staff to develop and implement website structure and architecture that accommodates campaign, press, communications, and data needs of the campaign.

• Support expansion of organizational intranet.

• Maintain and administer all internet domains owned by UNITEHERE and campaigns.

• Perform search engine optimization for all UNITE HERE sites

• Perform related duties as assigned.

• Position provides opportunity to develop Drupal modules to share with Open Source community and other collaboration.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:
• B.A. or B.S. in computer science, or related field or equivalent academic and work experience.
• Knowledge of HTML web technologies and applications, including statistics tracking, media sharing and social networking
• Extensive experience with PHP, XML, HTML, CSS, Javascript, Photoshop, Dreamweaver. ajax familiarity a plus.
• Extensive knowledge of website database connectivity, particularly including MySQL, SQL.
• Interest and desire in using API's for popular websites, as well as JSON.
• Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
• Experience managing multiple websites a plus.
• Familiarity with broad email message distribution using a tool such as GetActive.
• Commitment to labor movement.
• Excellent communication skills (written & verbal).
