June Meeting: CRM Features with Native Drupal Tools

Your Drupal site probably has users. Those users are probably doing interesting stuff. Every time they log in, participate in a forum, make a donation, or contact you or someone else; your users are telling you something about themselves. You want to know more about who they are and what they're interested in, and maybe you even want to contact them and ask them to give you some money, business, or time.

You could use a 3rd-party service to keep track of your users and their stuff. This works well for a lot of users, but you also risk creating data islands, where visitors' participation information is segregated from their contact information and you can miss out on the big picture. You're also in the business of updating separate databases and working with disparate service providers, which might not be nearly as much fun as working on your Drupal site. Alternatively, you could use specialized modules like CiviCRM, but in many cases, you can get a lot further with a little configuration and some Drupal savvy. So let's spend this Wednesday night getting savvy with CCK, Views, and Mail integration!

This topic is equal parts presentation and open forum on the strategies, best practices, and pitfalls of using "Native Drupal" as your CRM. I'll cover what I know, what I've worked on, and what could use a little polish. At the end of the evening, you should have a better sense of collecting and querying information about your users, contacting them, and tracking their responses.

July Meeting - TC Posse Takes Over

The July Twin Cities Drupal Group meeting will be a special event. The meeting will consist of short lightning presentations instead of the long presentation format.

Over the next few weeks Twin Cities Drupal users will be attempting a "see one, do one, teach one" approach to teaching each other about Drupal.

What does this mean?

See one

Figure out what you want to learn about. Building themes? Fixing bugs? Got a module stuck on Drupal 5? Hopefully somebody will teach you.

Do one

When you know more about how to approach a problem, find others who have the same problem and collaborate.

Teach one

When you see a question asked about Drupal you know the answer to, teach someone. You will be continuously surprised by how much you know and by your capacity to teach others.

Where are people figuring all this out? On the TC Posse wiki!

See, Do, Teach Deliverables:

Lightning presentations for July group meeting

Bugs fixed to be submitted to modules and core

Better understanding of Drupal code

Building a stronger Drupal ecosystem

Fun!

Hey everyone!

Drupal Daze is in a couple weeks. A Drupal 6 website has been created (it's still under construction):
http://drupaldaze.com/

Registration is open (its limited so don't miss out):
http://tcopencircuit.org/drupal_daze

You can see who has already started to sign up for presentations. We still need a few more presenters. Please let us know as soon as possible by using either of the following forms:
http://drupaldaze.com/contact
http://tcopencircuit.org/contact

Also, a few extra hands would be good too. If you volunteer, present, or sponsor Drupal Daze, your registration is free (as in beer).

Another job listing (@ Minnesota Historical Society)

It looks like the folks over at the Minnesota Historical Society are looking at Drupal - they've posted a 'Senior Web Developer' job at http://www.mnhs.org/about/jobs/731.html that includes "Experience with open source applications such as Linux, Apache, Drupal, Lucene, Nutch or Solr." amongst it's must-have qualifications.

Disclaimer - I don't know anything more about the job than what's publicly posted. It was posted last week to the TC PHP list, where I spotted it because I know the hiring manager, Rose Sherman, from work I did for the Historical Society ages ago. Rose is a great person and manager - anyone who's interested in working with Drupal (and probably search?) in their day job should take a look. They've got great content and stories to tell as well.

TC Posse - Drupal Lightning Presentations Wiki

Per the discussions on the Any Interest in Learning How to Code in Drupal? discussion and subsequent meeting, this is our wiki page.

At the meeting, we discussed quite a few things, including how to stay focused, how to make sure we take advantage of the Drupal community as a whole, how to make sure each and every individual gets something valuable from the experience as well as has the opportunity to contribute it back.

Immediate conclusions:

We're taking over the July TC Drupal meeting for a series of 10 minute lightning talks, e.g. theming views, coder module, interacting w/ Drupal.org, writing tests, contributing documentation, taking apart modules, etc. The goal of these talks will be to provide the group with a wide smattering of basics to use as we move forward.

Long term, it would be great to be helping out existing module maintainers by hunting bugs, testing patches, providing docs, tackling feature requests, etc. We'll be tagging our future posts on this subject with 'TC Posse' to call each others attention to them.

As a person reading this post, it's your responsibility to edit it and add. We're looking for:

What do you want to learn? (What would be helpful?)

Writing Tests for Drupal

Samir M. Nassar (SteamedPenguin)

more

Best practices in writing code for Drupal

Proposal: Look over the Read More Tweak module.

The goal is

Update the code for both Drupal 6 (PHP 4.x and some PHP 5.x compatibility) and Drupal 7 (>=PHP 5.2 only.)

Organize the code better

Write documentation

Make templating easier

Should this code go into a module like beginning, framework, zen?

Samir M. Nassar (SteamedPenguin)

more

Using a single codebase for multiple sites

Samir M. Nassar (SteamedPenguin)

more

What do you want to present?

Turning designs into Zen sub-themes

Samir M. Nassar (SteamedPenguin)

more

Beginning Drupal Hacking with Bazaar

Kyle Cunningham (CitizenKane)

more

Using patch and diff: Becoming a patch tester for modules and core

Samir M. Nassar (SteamedPenguin)

more

Using patch and diff: You found a bug! Now fix it.

Samir M. Nassar (SteamedPenguin)

more

Using the coder module

Samir M. Nassar (SteamedPenguin)

more

Tweaking your site with a module

Custom cosmetic tweaks you can do with APIs when theming doesn't cut it, starring hook_form_alter().

Gabe Ormsby (gormsby)

more

Which of the above are you willing to be the scribe for?

Beginning Drupal Hacking with Bazaar (Kyle Cunningham)

Site Development & Maintenance for Project with Local City Leaders | Bonestroo

Bonestroo is currently involved in a project in collaboration with the Urban Land Institute to develop a Sustainability Resource Center website. This resource would be used and enhanced by mayors and other local leaders throughout the metropolitan area to share information about implementing sustainable practices in their communities. Ideally, the website would serve as both a clearinghouse for information, as well as a way for leaders to share new tools, resources, ideas and contact information. We currently have a wiki started, but that format is becoming too unorganized and the group has decided they want to proceed with a more formally organized website.

We would need an individual to help us with two things. First, assisting us in estimating the time and cost of developing this tool based on our specific needs. This may require one to two meetings at the Bonestroo office in Roseville, MN. We would use this information to apply for grant funding to begin the project (we have already identified a number of potential sources). Second, once funding is secured, we would need the individual to do the initial set up of the site and assist us with ongoing maintenance. The contract for this work would begin after this grant funding is secured.

Some key features we are looking for in the website:

· The ability for more than one key person to manage the site, i.e. edit pages, add new pages, manage requests and submissions gathered through the website. I have used the Droopal framework before on another project, and found that system especially easy to work with. We may have people editing the site who are unfamiliar with html coding language.

· A method to collect resources/ideas from mayors and other contributors to the site. They should be able to upload documents and describe the resource they are requesting to have included on the site. “Gatekeepers” (see first item) would then review submission and make additions as necessary.

Some longer-term items we may be interested in implementing in the future:

· “Contacts” page, in which mayors and others can fill in their contact information with links to resources they have submitted. This way others are able to easily communicate with those who have expertise in a certain area.

· Virtual tours. Similar to photo slideshows on Flickr, New York Times or other websites. Specific projects would have photo (or video) slideshows that allow site visitors to “tour” a project with text or sound information accompanying the images.

If this work is something you would be interested in, please contact me via email at brendon.slotterback@bonestroo.com. Please supply a resume and examples of other sites you have developed using the drupal system. We are looking for reliable, self-directed individuals. Any background in city planning or sustainable development is a bonus. We have a meeting with the committee working on this project on July 11th, so we’d like to make contact with a web developer ASAP.

Call for Presenters for Drupal Daze (July 19-20, 2008)

Open Circuit is putting together another Twin-Cities Drupal Conference. This time it's two days. There will be presentations and panel discussions. We invite you all to help us make this a great, accessible Drupal focused conference.

Presentations

We are currently looking for presenters. We have three tracks lined up:

Drupal Advanced - aimed at people who are already familiar with Drupal basics.

Drupal Basic - aimed at people who have probably never done anything with Drupal.

Community Building - about building communities with websites. this does not have to be about Drupal specifically, but is encouraged.

It's looking like we will have 5 slots per track per day (10 total per track).

Panel Discussion

We are also trying to do some panel discussions each day. Each day, one will be focused on Drupal, and the other on community building through websites.

What Kind of People Should Apply

Anyone and everyone. You don't have to be an expert to present. In fact, if you just learned Drupal a month ago and want to talk about that experience, that would be really helpful to lots of people. Presentations can be discussion based, about technical programming, or anything in between.

Details

July 19 and 20, 2008 from 10AM to 5PM at the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Registration is open. If you present, you will be able to attend the event for free.

Wiki page with more detailed information can be found here (obviously these are just notes and nothing here is official): http://tcopencircuit.org/wiki/index.php?title=Drupal_Daze

If you have questions or want to present, please use one of the following:

Any Interest in Learning How to Code in Drupal?

Hi all,

I have been using Drupal for about 6 months on my own site and now having a real desire to learn how to code in Drupal. I'm an application developer in real life, but never had to use PHP.

I'm wondering if anyone would like to walk down this path with me. I thought it would be more fun to do this as a team rather than by myself.
We can discuss details like when and how often we are going to meet if there is enough interest in such a "learning" group.

Please reply to this post if you are interested, and feel free to post any ideas you may have.

Thanks!

UPDATE AS OF 06/09/08:
Trying to sum up what has been suggested below:
- bi-weekly (or even weekly) standing time window at a coffee shop (by gormsby)
- take a small, simple module from drupal.org and rip it apart. (by maher)
- The 3-5 PM time frame on weekdays is usually open for me. (by cwgriesel)
- creation of a TC Drupal coders forum (by hikarateboy)
- bi-weekly meetings with different times (by steamedpenguin)
- documentation and patch testing (by steamedpenguin)

ISSUES:
3-5 pm time frame for meeting would most likely not work for most of us. I for example don't leave work until 5pm at the earliest.

PEOPLE INTERESTED SO FAR - 11 people so far!
justinzero, gormsby, cwgriesel, hikarateboy, steamedpenguin, libsys, Wylbur, dgorton, CitizenKane, Allie Micka and myself.

First Group meeting has been Scheduled!
Sign up for the meeting here. Hope you can attend!

BarCamp Chippewa

A few of us up here in Northwestern Wisconsin are trying to get together the first-ever Western Wisconsin BarCamp. We're in the early organizing phases - meaning mostly we're mulling it over and looking for a time and place. Of course, the BarCamp will feature lots of Drupal love.
So - at the moment I'm crying out for people who are interested in participating, planning, sponsoring, or otherwise being involved in a BarCamp in the Eau Claire/Menomonie/Chippewa Falls area. If you are, please be in touch with me, or leave a comment below. We have a mailing list, and of course the mandatory wiki page at barcamp.org.

Also - we'll be looking for people to talk at the camp, of course, and - did I mention sponsoring?? Oh yeah, guess I did.

Volunteer drupal developer | New Tactics in Human Rights

Hello all, I know everyone is really busy, but I thought I'd throw this volunteer position out there for those of you that might be interested in volunteer on a human rights project here in the Twin Cities. I'm looking for someone to volunteer their wonderful drupal skills once every 2 weeks for about 2 hours, just to sit and think of creative drupal solutions to my drupal problems.
Some examples of projects I'm working on include adding a twitter feed to the website blogs, adding a few new content types, cross referencing different content types, and some organic group stuff...pretty basic stuff for you pros!

If you're interested, my email address is kantin@cvt.org.

April Meeting - Zen and the Art of Drupal Themeing

For the April meeting, Samir Nassar (SteamedPenguin) will report on how to use the Zen theme effectively to theme Drupal.

This presentation will give you an overview of the Zen theme to allow you to use Zen as a foundation for your project. The structure and comments of the theme make it a solid and flexible foundation for any project.

Regions: What are they? When to use them?

CSS Foo: Building a design on top of Zen

Creating Zen sub-themes for fun and profit

We will be using Drupal 5.7 for this presentation as the Views module and CCK module have not stabilized for Drupal 6 yet. Also, the Zen theme is not yet stable for Drupal 6.

Drupal Training Opportunities

Spring has sprung! The local Drupal community is growing and developing quite a network of learning and networking opportunities. Here are some of the upcoming gigs.

This group (of course): The Twin Cities Drupal Users Group Meeting. These meetings are free and happen monthly. No level of expertise is expected or required. Usually a topic of interest is discussed along with open forum for questions and networking. Always some yummy pizza following the topic discussion. Every 4th Wednesday evening starting at 7 PM. More info can be found here - be sure you are signed up to receive emails through the "my membership" link in the right column. Hope to see you soon!

Lullabot's Drupal Theming and jQuery and API and Module Development classes for the more advanced Drupal developers. For more information, see their post below.

Drupal Basic Training: Build a Drupal Website. For those of you how are just starting Drupal, Advantage Labs, Inc. is offering a 4-week class/workshop/seminar series on how to build websites using Drupal. We've been hearing from many folks - from the users group meetings to the Drupal Day at the Science Museum attendees - that a class like this would be helpful. It starts April 14th - a week from Monday. We expect to follow the series with more topic-based workshops (one-time) and more advanced classes.

We are also excited by Open Circuit. Science Museum of MN, Sunday's Energy, Gorton Studios, Steve Hanson (TC Drupal online group founder), TCDrupal Users Group and others have all been working toward more extended collaboration on Drupal learning opportunities. Stay tuned for more info to learn about Drupal and get involved locally.

Presentation Proposal: Theming Drupal with the Zen Theme

I am considering presenting on themeing Drupal using the Zen theme for either the April or May meeting.

Here is what I would like to do:

Explain what Zen is

How to create and use subthemes

Creating regions

I will be adapting several designs to the Zen theme, among them:

spring360 by René Hornig

Where I could use help is for people to ask questions. Don't worry about what your question is because the type of questions asked now will help me determine the scope of the presentation.

Speak up, leave a comment or ask a question. Ultimately this presentation is about what you want to learn.

Twin Cities Meetup with Dries and the "Usability Team" RSVP

Some of you may already be aware of the Drupal Usability Testing Efforts at the University of Minnesota. Dries has also posted some thoughts on this project and how it fits into the greater Drupal usability plan.

A few folks have asked whether or not we were planning on holding a local Drupal meetup event, given that Dries and a handful of core developers would be hanging out in TC for a few days. The answer to that question is: Yes! We have a jam-packed few days of work for the Drupal team, but we're going to start things off with an informal public meetup on Monday, February 25 at 6:00pm:

Details
* Location: Campus Club (Directions and Parking)
* Time: Begins at 6:00pm
* Catered by the Campus Club

What we'd like to know is, who's in? Please help us out with an informal RSVP by posting your name and an optional affiliation to this wiki page. Thanks!

If you have resources to contribute or have other ideas regarding this event, please contact Cody Hanson: hans1794 at umn.edu.

Suggested Hotels:

Hotel

Phone

Proximity

Radisson University Hotel

1-800-822-6757

2 blocks

University Days Inn

612-623-3999

6 blocks

Holiday Inn Metrodome

1-800-448-3663

1 mile

The Depot Minneapolis

612-375-1700

1.5 miles

I am not making any recommendations or assertions of quality by posting this. The hotels are only ranked by distance from my place of employment, the University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC).

The closest intersection to UMMC is Washington Ave. and Harvard Street. This puts in the heart of the University of Minnesota. From around 0700 until 1900 Route 16 runs every 10-15 minutes, which can take you to downtown Minneapolis in 5-7 minutes. Route 16 connects to our Light Rail Metrodome Station and has several stops within the University of Minnesota area.

Another frequent route is Route 2 which runs every 15 minutes. This route threads through many areas in the University of Minnesota. (SteamedPenguin)

Wouldn't mind hearing which hotel(s) people have decided to stay while visiting for this event. I'd rather the right hotel where other Drupal folks will be staying. - Bryan Ruby

Transportation:

If you are arriving by airport it is very easy to get to downtown Minneapolis. It is also cheap.

The easiest and cheapest way is to take Light Rail Transit. There are stations on either concourse, Humphrey or Lindberg.

The ticket machines take US coins and paper as well as credit cards (Visa, MasterCard). Make sure to take the train on the side that says "To Minneapolis." The train will go all the way to downtown Minneapolis in about 30 minutes. If you are staying at a hotel downtown make sure to ask them what their closest light rail stop is. To get to the University of Minnesota directly from the airport you want to exit the light rail at the Metrodome Station and take a Route 16 bus. You can ask the driver to call out the stations so you know to pull the yellow cord that indicates that you are requesting a stop. Make sure you keep your Light Rail ticket. It is good for use and re-use for two and a half hours after the time it was issued and is valid for train rides. To get to the event you want to exit the bus as the Coffman Union stop.

There is also the option to take a taxi, and some hotels have shuttles. Taking a taxi from the airport to the University of Minnesota is probably going to run around USD 30.00. (SteamedPenguin)

Advertising:

You can use the attached HTML (dries-meetup-countdown-snippet.txt) in conjunction with the Countdown Timer module to advertise the meetup on your site.

theme design | stepmother's floral design company

My stepmother is starting a new business building floral arrangements. I am going to help her build a website, and I plan to set it up using Drupal, but I am no designer, so I'm looking for someone local to create a theme for her website.

I think a theme is generally pretty independent of the size of the site, but feel free to quote me on whatever basis (pages, hours, sites) you like.

Thanks,

February Meeting - User-centric Site Structure

February’s presentation was a bit “meta” for a Drupal group, focusing on basic user-centered site structure -- An approach that works similarly regardless of your choice of CMS (or lack thereof). I focused on my use of card-sorting exercises to develop the hierarchy of information used at Friends of the Mississippi River's web site, http://www.fmr.org, in our 2007 Drupal-based redesign. The notes and example documents that I used in my presentation are attached below.

More good stuff can be found at Information and Design.

January Meeting

For the January meeting, Gorton Studios will walk through the home page of the Rake Magazine (one of our recent projects) and deconstruct it by looking at the files and code involved. Much of what will be covered is at least hinted at in our writeup of that project (http://drupal.org/node/191608), and reading through that writeup may help you get more from the session.

If there are specific questions on other aspects of the site, we'll obviously be able to answer those as well. The hopeful aim of this presentation is to pass along at least some little tip or trick to everyone who sits through it.

January Meeting topic

The next meeting is January 23rd (I believe). We missed the November meeting, so I don't know if an agenda and presenter have already been set for January. If not, though, we'd previously mentioned that we were willing to present on some of our recent projects and had tentatively slotted that for the January meeting.

To keep the topic from becoming Gorton-Studios-drones-on-and-on-about-their-work, though, I'm going to suggest that we look at the home page of the Rake Magazine (one of our recent projects) and deconstruct it by looking at the files and code involved. Much of that is at least hinted at in our writeup of that project (http://drupal.org/node/191608), though, so if there are specific questions on other aspects of the site, we'll obviously be able to answer those as well. I think the purpose of any such exposition should be less look-at-what-we-made, though, and more of an opportunity for everyone to pick up some little tip or trick along the way.

So - if the topic isn't already set and this sounds like it would be of interest - let us know and we'll prepare accordingly.

Drew Gorton
Drupal Day!

From 10am to 5pm on January 27th, Open Circuit (http://tcopencircuit.org) will be hosting a day-long series of workshops on Drupal in the Learning Technologies Center at the Science Museum of Minnesota. We want to provide an opportunity for everyone from the bleary-eyed programmer to the wide-eyed novice to teach and learn about using Drupal to build websites.

The agenda is still being finalized, but chances are that there will be two parallel tracks of workshops geared toward people with varying levels of experience, followed by presentations on Twin Cities websites built with Drupal.

This will be a great chance to network, get advice, and show off your hard work, but it won't happen without your participation. If you're interested in presenting your site or teaching a brief workshop on a particular module or facet of Drupal, please email Open Circuit at admin@lists.tcopencircuit.org

Or join or email: list http://lists.tcopencircuit.org/listinfo.cgi/opencircuit-tcopencircuit.or...

Introduction and Inquiry

Hi! I'm an arts administrator recently relocated to Minneapolis from San Francisco where I was involved in the nonprofit tech community - NTEN, NetSquared, etc. I am attempting to find and join a similar community in my new hometown!

I administer (or am attempting to adminster) a drupal-based site that was created via the CivicSpace On Demand program (http://civicspacelabs.org/civicspace/features). CivicSpace has since told me that they are no longer providing support for their custom site customers, and I find myself with no source of technical support. I'm hoping to find drupal/civicspace savvy people who I can tap for advice, wisdom, and expertise!

My site is set to launch in San Francisco in January, but I have a few technical issues that need to be solved first. My organization (Independent Arts and Media: http://artsandmedia.net/) does not have a huge budget for technical support, so it's up to me to try to find and leverage the support of the community. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

Drupal Group - Views Theming Presentation

At the next Drupal Group meeting, I will be discussing what I have learned so far about theming a view using the template.php file. I will explain how I was able to create a nice little table, and how I could not only control the formatting, but also where and when the data is displayed.

As a web programmer who knows php and SQL but is relatively new to Drupal, I have been feeling incapacitated when it comes to controlling my themes while trying to adhere to best practices. (if I could only write a SQL query in my template! aaargh!) Recently, with a hint from Barry at Advantage Labs, I was able to get past this hurdle, so I now have more control over my views themes. What I learned is based on a lesson at drupaldojo.com:

http://www.drupaldojo.com/lesson/theming-views-table

Date: Wednesday, October 24th
Advantage Labs' conference room at:

2104 Stevens Avenue South
Minneapolis, MN 55409

Web programmer (Twin Cities) | IDC WebDev

IDC WebDev is an established, small web design firm based in the Twin Cities. For over five years we have provided high quality web design, content management solutions, and database programming to local businesses and non-profits.

We're seeking a web developer/programmer to join our small, effective team. This is an opportunity for you to access more work based upon our sucessful word-of-mouth networking, initially as an independent contractor and with the goal of eventually welcoming you into our business as a full partner.

We need someone located in the Twin Cities who shares our passion for providing services efficiently to local small businesses and non-profit organizations, and the drive to participate in larger projects as our business continues to grow.

We need you to have skills in:
--- PHP/MySQL programming
--- Content management system concepts
--- DHTML/Javascript programming

Bonus skills:
--- Drupal content management system programming
--- Familiarity with web 2.0 concepts, AJAX, other fancy stuff
--- visual layout and graphic design (digital tools)
--- HTML and CSS

This is an independent contractor position: we need people with the self-motivation to pursue and execute on projects. Our standard hourly rate is $60, and your pay depends on work available. We're seeking more partners because we currently have more requests for work than we can handle right now, and expect to have regular or semi-regular work for you. This will start out part-time with the goal of working to full-time.

Please e-mail jesse@idcwebdev.com or call 651-442-5734 if you have questions or would like to apply. Application involves submitting your resume/portfolio and responding to a brief questionnaire.

A Sub-Group?

I am wondering if there other people in the Twin-Cities using Drupal, that would want to create sub-group for development of Drupal or more advanced topics for Drupal.

I really like the group we have going here. I think the range of Drupal expertise is a huge benefit, but I also feel like it is limiting at the same time. The difference between beginner CSS and writing Drupal Modules is huge.

My idea has spawned from this post (http://drupal.org/node/160239) and what others have said about other Drupal Users Groups.

I propose a Twin Cities Drupal User Group focused on more advanced topics (Module Building, Installation, etc.). Maybe we can get involved with the Twin Cities PHP User Group (http://www.tcphp.org/).

Let me know what you think.

CSS Overview and Drupal Q&A

It's not that CSS is such a simple topic that it will only take 30 minutes to cover in depth - It's that there's so much to cover that I'm not sure how to tackle it without rambling from subject to subject. I'll talk about critically important concepts like specificity, inheritance and the box model and such, but after that, what's the best use of our time? Any suggestions on how to focus this discussion would be appreciated.

If I understood correctly, for the rest of the session we'll attempt to tangibly tackle user's Drupal questions by starting with a fresh, local installation.

New view plugin module: Node Cloud

Hello,

I wanted to announce a new module, just released today: Node Cloud. If you're familiar with tag clouds this module should look pretty familiar: it themes the output of a view like a tag cloud.

The primary ordering of the view is from the first sort. The sizing of each item is based on the second sort order. This makes the plugin very versatile for making clouds of popular content, highly rated content (say with the voting api), highly commented content, etc.

Check out the project page and README for more details.

I've created a 5.x-1.0 release and it should be available as soon as the packaging scripts run.

If you want to do pure tag clouds, check out the tagadelic_views module. It does that well. This module is for making clouds out of different criteria.

Cheers,
-Mark
