Twin Cities

Welcome to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Drupal Group. We were having a discussion at the N-Ten get-together the other night and a few of us thought it might be a good idea to start up a Twin Cities Drupal User Group, since there are more of us using Drupal in the area than we thought.

Twin Cities Drupal Meetings are generally held the 4th Wednesday of every month at 7 PM.

Location:
Advantage Labs Offices in the IATP Building
2104 Stevens Avenue South
Minneapolis, MN 55404

There is parking behind the building and on the street. To get yourself buzzed in, please dial #97

drupal_lookup_path() redux

Here's a little more information on the patch I mentioned last night (by Wim Leers):

<

blockquote>
drupal_lookup_path() optimization - skip looking up certain paths in drupal_lookup_path()

Description
Why?
To reduce the number of queries per page that are completely useless, I've written this optimization.

Configuration
You get a new config page at admin/build/path/skiplist to modify the skiplist. The paths listed here can include wildcards as well as '', in the exact same way you can configure on what pages a block should (not) be listed.

What has changed to make this work?

Zen theme hacking

I'm hankering for a couple few hours of friendly Zen theme building with like-minded buddies.

Options:

Coffeee shop with loud, obnoxious people and bad internet

OR

My place where the intertubes are strong, the tea flows like the rivers of Babylon and where a 16-year old cat basks in the sun.

This can be a joint project or separate projects where we get to benefit from asking one another questions and getting feedback.

WYSIWYG API

I've been looking more closely at the inner working of the WYSIWYG API stuff, in particular as it relates to markItUp!. I've written up some of my thoughts on extending markItUp! within the WYSIWYG API and it occurs to me that there might be others in the area who are interested in either customizing their own WYSIWYG editors or understanding how this all works.

If you are interested in working on this to collaborate and learn let me know.

Grants and Programs for Participation in Drupal/Open Source

A few nights ago, I listened to the mp3 from this Drupalchix panel at the DrupalCamp LA. (And many congrats to the organizers Rain Breaw and Nicole Bluto for their smart leadership!) http://2009.drupalcampla.com/drupalchix (see also, http://groups.drupal.org/node/23188)

One of the speaker/facilitators (Rain, I believe) talks about the film industry and how grants are available to support and encourage aspiring women directors. I definitely know a number of women who were able to develop their own visions and voices with the support of various arts grants.

SSCO Web Redesign Project RFP
October 27, 2009

Overview
The current SSCO Web site was made in 2004. At the time, the new Web was well received and met the needs of the organization. Since then, Web technology has taken off and the SSCO Web seems dated and lacks interactivity. Furthermore, the SSCO has subscribed to a variety of other Web 2.0 (list serve, Facebook, Flickr, etc.) products that are not integrated with the SSCO Web.

November Happy Hour (Nov 05)

Start:
2009-11-05 17:30 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:

Well, it looks like I will be around until Nov 08. I won't be able to make the meeting on Wed, but I just want to put in the Nov Happy Hour which I can come to. Chach had said somewhere along the line that we should go to Pizza Luce (in Seward) so I am sticking with that.

Drupal Happy Hour does not usually have an agenda and no one usually opens up a laptop. It's usually just a time to meet each other, catch up, and talk about the Drupal goodness! Hope to see you all there.

TC Drupal Users Group Meeting

Start:
2009-10-28 19:00 - 21:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:

This month, we're proposing a wide-open topic -- Managing Drupal Development Projects.

It seems that every time we meet, discussions break out about how creating a Drupal site is different from other web projects. People have questions about process, tips about time management and bidding, horror stories and -- best of all -- ideas related to knowledge sharing and collaboration.

Lead Developer Needed for Emerging Company Mxapp, LLC

Mxapp, LLC is a technology company for the restaurant industry focused on driving more consumers to restaurants. We are currently developing a platform for the restaurant industry that enables consumers to order food, redeem promotions, and share menu items with friends right from their smartphone. We have been around for just less than a year and already have restaurants on board and are ready to go live. We are looking for a passionate developer to take our software to the next level as we gain more customers and add more features. This would be a full-time position with a salary and would require the following skills:

PHP and Drupal. (Drupal 6 specifically, anything before that is quite different so there might be a high cost associated with someone learning it)
Javascript and jQuery. These are used quite extensively, especially in the front end ordering menu.
C# and .NET. This is used for the ordering relay program. Job candidate doesn’t need to be an expert, be he or she does need to know enough about it to make things work.
MySql and Data Modeling. Job candidate needs to understand how to use SQL and how to model real world data in a database.
Git. The revision control system we use.
Linux stuff. There is stuff like moving the code to the server, adding new accounts for developers and other kinds of things candidate needs to know.
Apache. Understanding how the apache webserver works is pretty important and there is bound to be a time where it will be needed.

If you are interested or have any questions please contact Parag Shah at (612) 208-7724 or email at parag.shah@mxapp.com.

Move October User Meeting to Oct 21st?

As some of you may know I am moving to Geneva, Switzerland. The usual TC DUG meeting would be Oct 28th, but that might be the day that I am moving. So, I propose that we move the meeting a week earlier.

I guess the first question is: Can we still meet at Advantage Labs?

Otherwise, any objections?

Drupal User Group Meeting Notice sent in error!

It appears that the switch to Drupal 6 for groups.drupal.org resulted in sending an announcement today for LAST WEEK'S Twin Cities Drupal User Group meetup. Please note that there will not be a users group meeting at 2104 Stevens. These occur the 4th Wednesday of each month. This was last Wednesday for September.

BUT, there is a Drupal Happy Hour tonight, October 1. These occur each first Thursday of the month. Tonight's will be at the Blue Nile in Minneapolis from 5:30 to 7:30 or so. Check out the separate event notice for this.

Thanks!
