Introduce ChinaOpen

Three months into planning, overcoming all kinds of odds and challenges (including the latest challenge of the Chinese firewall!) -- we are pressing ahead with ChinaOpen.

And on the eve of returning to China to iron out the logistic details, I would like to point you to http://www.china-osl.com and watch the Flash-video, which captures in essence, our message, spirit and goal of our ChinaOpen initiative.

In short, this summer, for 2-months, we will round up 50-200 Chinese students to work on Open-Source projects from worldwide. Currently in two tracks:
1. Drupal, and
2. Adobe – ColdFusion, Flex and AIR

While the web-site is NOT complete, that it really is a “Development snapshot” (with Drupal/Flex), that the details such as how to submit an idea, and “legal terms” as well as the schedule is not even finished. I would like you: my friends, colleagues and acquaintances, to help me get the words out there, so that you can understand what we are up to – and hopefully through you, we can get various ideas/projects prepared for the students to work on.

I will be back in 4-weeks, at which time we will blow the roofs off via a developer conference in the Washington DC Convention Center for which we are sponsoring, under the ChinaOpen logo, (probably) complete with Chinese lion-dancing.

Let’s work together to change China, for the better.

DrupalCamp Bangkok: Saturday, May 24th, 2008

DrupalCamp is coming to Bangkok!

We will hold the first-ever DrupalCamp in Thailand on Saturday, May 24th, at the conference facilities of Inet, on the 13th floor of the Thai Summit Tower, Petchaburi Road, just east of the Ratchadaphisek / Asoke intersection.

We will also be running a full-day "Intro to Drupal" track that will cover everything from setting up a basic install to intermediate skills of customizing with modules, CCK and Views.

The event will be barcamp-style, which means that it's open to everybody, but everybody should come ready to participate. Be prepared to talk on a topic of your own choice as well as listening to, sharing with and learning from other people interested in Drupal. If you are a web developer with even the slightest interest in Drupal we encourage you come come. If you are already using Drupal, you are not going to want to miss this event.

This event is free and open to all. We do ask that you register in advance so we have an reasonably accurate estimate of how many people will be attending.

How can China be of services to Drupal -- practically?

We have been pondering about how to best evangelize China into the Drupal community -- and in droves.

After operating in China for two years, and despite of our best trying such as holding the Drupal BootCamp event in Beijing http://www.drupalchina.org/node/3638, our biggest challenge is the practicality of getting Chinese acquainted with Drupal -- BEFORE we can even talk about having them participate into the DROP program, let alone directly contribute into module or theme writing.

Meanwhile, after our Boston DrupalCon session http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/session/drupal-china-how-who-and-why, we were in London for CFUnited Europe http://europe.cfunited.com/, during which we shared our thinking to run a two months long, 50-100 college-students, China Open-Source Summer-Camp (ChinaOpen), in Beijing this summer with excitement built around the sites and sound of the 2008 Olympics.

Within the first two hours, we received 7 Open-Source projects to work on.

That was 1-month ago. And we have been contemplating about how this ChinaOpen can be of direct service to the Drupal community ever since.

Our latest epiphany/idea is to solicit ideas/projects to build web-sites for the non-profit community -- this summer -- in order to “graduate” the ChinaOpen participants into the DROP/SoC program, (say) next summer and give back to a few deserving organizations that need to get the word out but don't have the budget or resources. We imagine some participants may even be able to directly contribute to writing Drupal modules after this.

We could obviously open to For-Profit (kind of like the old “dotcom”) style web-sites/ideas, but we figure this would open the flood-gate too much.

What do you think?

Ideas, suggestions, critics, helping out?

Finally, we are trying to decide, whether this ChinaOpen should be pursued forward this summer, since logistically speaking, we are rapidly approaching the absolute deadline time to get the words out, and arrange all the logistic issues as May will be here in 2-weeks -- which is our other way to ask, for those of you who have participated either DROP or SoC before:
-- What kind of general rule-of-thumb in terms of operational-support that we should estimate?
-- For example, for each student, how much "mentoring" and backoffice support that we would need to factor?

对于Drupal社区的“水滴”们，近期瞩目的重要事件就是Drupal 6。对我们这些四处飘遥的华人，这个版本新的发布似乎比春节大假更有吸引力，是我们不够传统么。

每个人都在关注Drupal 6～从近期在北京、西雅图和温哥华三个城市参加的的Drupal社区聚会中的谈论主题和问答焦点，都可以清晰感知。这里问个为什么？为什么Drupal 6会吸引这么多的关注？

相信多数Drupal社区的“水滴”们，会有意无意地想到：性能表现。是的，性能表现让Drupal 6捕捉了众多的眼球。

无论是对于做咨询顾问的工程师，还是网站设计、规划的设计师、架构师，性能表现是大家密切关注的焦点。Drupal在这方面进展得还可以，尤其是在Drupal 6中在内核采纳了多项缓存技术，经实验证实对性能表现有很好的提高；Drupal 6中对于数据库存取和一些实时环境数据的存取和实现机制做了有益的调整，也对Drupal 6性能有好的帮助。

我们很多人是在实际工作中，遭遇到Drupal出现性能的问题时，目光投向Drupal.org的主站。我们看到：从去年的中期开始，Drupal.org的主站，经历了几次架构的调整，涉及到运行服务器硬件的升级、Drupal 5的实施、数据库系统的优化、Apache的优化以及如上提到的实时环境数据的存取机制的调整。这些小的调整，都辐射出在Drupal社区中人人面临的问题：基于开源LAMP架构的Drupal，如何保持和提升对于大访问量网站的有效支持。

当然，如上的对于大访问量网站的有效支持，是几乎所有基于开源的LAMP架构下的CMS，都无法逃避的问题。无论是Drupal，Joomla，还是Plone/Zope, 大家都要过这关，所谓“华山自古一条路”，狭路相逢勇者胜。

去年在Drupal.org主站上做的一些小实验，已被证明颇为有效，在世界范围的社区中已经有多个Group在实际运行系统中实施，让人欣慰。只是，这些针对性能的调整和优化，由Drupal的核心决策者决定，正式实施放入到Drupal 6中，而在之后的Drupal 5.x 的多个版本修正中，只涉及安全性的修正和补丁。于是，我们殷切的目光投向就要在本月发布的Drupal 6上，丝毫不亚于近期如火如荼的“床照门”事件。

Drupal 6中也有很多不如意的地方，我们明显有遗憾的是：CCK未放入内核。一次，Jacob Redding针对CCK未进入Drupal 6内核的原因，说，“Dries说CCK对系统性能有很大的影响，所以老大拍板说不放。” Jacob 当时耸耸肩、撇撇嘴， “he is ... the big boss.”

个人，我觉着这个问题可以讨论讨论。对于真正由于Drupal的出色的架构设计而采用它实施在线工程的架构师来说，CCK就是Drupal中快速搭建的预制板么。我们这样看看，只采用传统的Drupal数据结构，就是只用红砖搭房子，当然是搭出的房子比较小巧、精致些，大风大雨下很有巍然不动的样子，即使来着几十年罕见的“暴风雪”，也可以自已应付，不用政府劳神，把大雪和大雪带来的痛苦困难，压压压。但是，这终究是个小的红砖房子而已。需要设计大型社区应用的人士，不是用Drupal在自家书房搭建红砖小屋的业余爱好者，不只需要一个自己建立玩玩，试水自建的Blog系统，需要的是快速水泥，批量预制件。

当然了，没有放入内核，使用Contribute Module的方式依然可以很好使用诸如CCK,Views等钢筋水泥 ... 世间永不会只此一路的。只是，我们又回到上面提到的问题，对于Open Source的CMS来说，是否要有种精神：面对性能问题，无可回避，真正是刺刀见红，士兵出击的时刻。我建议前年就结了婚的Dries同志，看看《士兵突击》和《集结号》，借鉴一下。实在不行，也采用一下《投名状》里的冷兵器突破火枪、洋炮的三百步冲击战术，牺牲百把个热血的“水滴”爱好者，也要冲过去。你看看，同样是知识疯子，长发束起的陈可辛就比较得有血性。Dries同志要重新融汇一下东方精神，不仅仅是平和、无为的修行。

关注Drupal 6的推出以及相关的花边事宜，就联想到比尔-盖茨同志的微软公司，此处表达由衷的敬意。相对Drupal这些开源的精巧系统，XP，Vista简直就是庞然大物，其大团队合作开发的辛苦，真是远远超过土八路光脚走长征。老比同志带领几万高知程序员，开发出又...又强大的Vista。但人家还是说自己是微软，又小又软，也不乱拍自己的雄猛大照，也不到处乱放（注：陈冠希同学对此有贡献）。

关注CCK向Drupal 6的迁移，因此对CCK及相关讨论区密切观察。“ XXX TMD几个月都没有更新了，XXX还混不混开源了”，虽然我们使用的是别人无偿贡献的开源系统，心中时刻充满感激，但三字经依然脱口而出。此时此刻，感到的是开源系统开发的无序性，和使用开源的煎熬痛楚。在上个月的30号(January 30, 2008), Moshe Weitzman同志终于有些急迫地发言了：

We should really shoot to release CCK before Drupalcon. Otherwise, we'll have lots of finger pointing as to why Druapl6 is not yet unusable and so on. Only 4.5 weeks to go.

BTW, Drupalcon指三月初在波士顿举行3天的Drupal会议。届时，将会有几场重要的主题演讲和技术讨论上演。在此之前，我们一起说：排除万难，Drupal 6一定要实现！

大家好，我是李长明，记录中国的发起人，我将首先回答些一般都会提出的问题，然后再根据大家的问题逐步回答，

什么是‘记录中国’网站？
’记录中国‘ 是我在 07 年10 月开始的一项学习之余的工作，就是在一个 http://allaboutchina.spaces.live.com 上坚持摘录每天美国媒体有关中国的新闻，新闻来源主要是纽约时报 NYtimes，经济学人Economist。 ‘记录中国网站’，实际上只是一个对未来的期盼，希望自己做的这点工作可以遇到更多的志同道合的朋友，然后将博客发展成为一个综合性的网站，为所有关心，热爱那片土地的人提供一个从客观的角度，观察，记录中国的平台。

‘记录中国’ 想法的起源，
我17 岁来到美国留学开始便每天坚持阅读纽约时报，后来加入时代 Times 以及经济学人 Economist,作为每天每周的基本阅读，随着中国的发展，美国媒体也对中国的问题更加关注，因此我早有想法，希望可以维持一个网站，将这些新闻报道收集起来，然后大家可以针对时事讨论，或者供日后研究使用。从 07 年 10月开始，自己终于将这个想法兑现，将平时自己零星的阅读都收集到一个空间上。面对中国一个历史性的发展，我认为从各种角度，全面，客观的记录中国是件非常有意义的事情。

如何能做到客观，
我想，面对同一件事件，会有不同的声音，会有不同的分析与见解，能尽可能多的收集到这些资料并同时呈现给读者，让读者自己从中取舍并作评判，我觉得记录工作便是客观并且有意义的。

‘记录中国’的原因以及目的，
从我个人角度来讲，是因为对这片土地执着的爱。这个可爱的国家在发生着巨变的同时，问题以及隐忧也是接踵而至的，我觉得每一个国人都有责任为国家做些工作。而对于我，我觉得能够提供一个平台，让人有机会从更客观，更全面，更理性的角度来审视一个事件，同时客观的，真实地记录这个时代这个国家，我觉得是件非常有意义的事情。如果能够翻译文章，帮助国人克服语言的障碍而可以从各个角度倾听旁观者的声音，那么这个网站的工作就显得更加有意义而且值得为它付出时间以及精力了。

网站建设规划
网站将以类似新闻媒体的形式存在，设计和格式类似 www.nytimes.com, www.nyobserver.com 。
板块主要根据横向以及纵向来分类。
横向根据国家，媒体来分类，比如美国区分，纽约时报，华盛顿邮报，华尔街报。。。
纵向根据类别，中国政治，中国经济，中国社会，中国民生，等。
中部是各个板块的更新文章。
同时，除了文字记录之外，网站还包括一个图片记录区，视频播客以及音频播客，记录中国网站将组成采访团队，记录普通人的生活，聆听平凡人的故事，以自发的采访方式从一个个真实的人的角度来记录中国。
当然，这些都是对未来‘记录中国’网站的展望，现在也只能从基本的开始做起，但是我相信，面对着中国历史性的发展时期，时间会证明我们这些工作是有意义的。我希望我们可以用自己的努力，来记录这个特殊的时代。

这个活动已经启动一个月了，现在已经有中国，中国台湾，美国，法国，德国，加拿大，英国，日本的志愿者团队。我已经购买了域名和网站，可是自己作为初学者毕竟能力有限，一个月来网站的建设工作都没有显著的进展。希望可以在这里找到志同道合的朋友，大家一起将网站建设起来，一同记录中国，记录这个时代。

（一）
Jacob介绍了一下drupal association 的组织基本架构以及drupal.org的大致架构。
drupal 创始人是Dries
steven还有另外三位（具体名字忘记了）是core team
400+开发人员

jocob提到：所有参与dupal的人都是没有工资，大家都出于奉献。（个人理解：你奉献了，其他人在你的基础上进行优化并再次奉献，这时候你就收获了）
drupal是一个共产主义社会（By Jhon）

drupal的费用均来自捐款.扣除日常开支，如服务器带宽外。若有盈余会转捐给其他公益事业，如大学社团。

jacob提到的drupal association是一个与drupal.org相对独立的组织，这个组织的主要任务之一就是维护合法的drupaler的权益。比如你做了一个完善的drupal产品,某个人把我的产品拿去卖钱，并宣称这是他的东西。这个association就会出来维护你的权益。这个组织近期会有一个选举，不出意外Jacob将是我们这的代表。

（二）
回顾了jhon公司的上次发起的Bootcamp活动：
1、由于不能租赁到相应的场地，Bootcamp二期及三期的讲座需要推迟到节后了。
2、Jhon 让我们参加过上次讲座的回馈一些建议，收集到了以下建议：
A) 讲座内容方面能结合实例更佳
B) 讲座前分发相应文档，让参与人更好的做相应准备，如了解一些课上会用到的基本概念、涉及内容等
C) 会后能够把相应音视频记录存档并且给其他未到现场网友分享。期间rick?（具体名字有点对不上号了）提议视频画面以讲师的屏幕内容为主。
D) 会前对大家期望了解的drupal内容进行调查，选出大家感兴趣的主题由专长人员进行讲解交流等。
e)Andy(我)建议更多的人参与到整个培训工作协作中来，贡献一份自己的水滴。如，联系培训场地、会前有一些人提前到场安装机器上的环境、会后有人组织相应视频发布等等。

Jacob提出关于drupal的汉化问题，具体细节比较多。我没记太清楚。大致意思是需要大家参与，并且围绕一些在线协同工具展开工作。

（四）
自由讨论
主要形式是，有问题的提出自己的问题，知道的领取问题，最后各自沟通。

这是我第二次参加drupal在北京的meetup，第一次是参加小兰他们公司发起的Bootcamp第一期讲座。今天更加清晰的知道durpal 的文化，期间本次meetup的发起人。

感谢小兰以及他们公司付出的努力。

以上内容完全凭借自己的理解以及大脑回忆记录，可能不准确。大家补充。

------ And now for my writeup (Jacob) --------

Although we switched dates from a Thursday to a Saturday the turn out was still pretty good. A solid 15 people showed up to discuss how they were using Drupal including a visitor from Vancouver, B.C that discovered the meetup via groups.drupal.org! The new location (the Study English bar) turned out to be a nice change as we were able to use the private room which made conversing much easier.

With some help from Ben (circleoflife) and Andy (andygong) we had a short but sweet Agenda. We started off with introductions which were really great as we had a few new people joining us. There are a lot of good projects in the works in Beijing, I'm excited to hear them all.

After introductions I began with an overview of the Drupal Association. What it is and why it exists. To be brief we talked to the roles and responsibilities of the Association which is to (1) protect Drupal (2) promote Drupal (3) provide services to the community. The association does not write code or direct the Drupal project. Drupal is in the hands of the community. The association is simply there to ensure that the work of the community (YOU!) is protected.

The discussion of the Drupal association also led into a discussion of how Drupal core is created. Although there are only 4 people with commit access to core there are well over 400 people that have contributed to the core project in the form of patches, issues, bug fixes, etc. Its important to understand this as it demonstrate the power of the community and how easy it is for someone to plug into that community and affect change. If you want something YOU can make it happen.

The discussion was quite nice and I was really glad to hear all of these questions.

Next up was Amber and an overview of her AMAZING bootcamp held last weekend. If you weren't able to attend the FREE bootcamp Amber did an absolutely amazing job. I attended despite not being able to understand much of it.
--Amber and her crew will be providing more bootcamps so be on the lookout!

Translation!!
We talked about the translation efforts that are currently under way. dami 大米 (Drupalchina.org), kzeng, and a few others did an absolutely amazing job into translating Drupal into Simplified Chinese. Utilizing the new l10n Server project we are going to try and get individual modules translated in a method that we can all share translations.
We also talked about setting up a central translation dictionary so that translations are standard across sites.
More on this to come...

After this discussion John (and the Kenny, Amber, Vanessa Power team) asked everyone to ask a question to the group and we then broke into mini-groups helping to solve each others issues. It was great to see everyone helping each other!

After the three of us attended the Drupal China meet-up, we would like to initiate a three-step “BootCamp”, designed to help newcomers to level the playing-field, so that in the next Drupal Meetups, we can speak in a much more common terms. It will be held on the Saturdays on Jan 12th, 19th and 26th at our company’s premise. 自参加了Drupal China meet-up后，感触颇多。一直以来，我们在drupalchina社区上，享受着Drupal和Drupaler带来的便利和成果；而Drupal本身能够做到最成功的开源CMS系统之一，是靠从五湖四海，为了一个共同目标走到一起来的、像你我一样技术人员共同的成果。:-)

我们自愿发起一个三步曲的“BootCamp”，目的是想帮助刚开始接触drupal的朋友们快速入门上手。这样，在下次的Drupal China meet-up里，我们可以在同样的基础上，分享更多的具有实际意义的话题---比如，module开发的经验和技巧。

这三步曲的主题安排如下（暂定).

第一步：Drupal 基础（将以drupal5.x版本讲述）(暂定2008年1月12日下午13：30）
1. 安装drupal（drupal5.3）
2. 使用经典garland模板，在给定的garland主题和样式中，创建第一个drupal网站。
3. 认识drupal的结构：Menu, Content 和(为什么/如何创建)Content-Type, Block 和region, 以及一些 "内核" modules
4. 认识drupal幕后：构建网页的几个重要文件
a) Template.php
b) Page.tpl.php
c) Node.tpl.php
d) Block.tpl.php

第二步:用drupal制作一个有独立风格/样式/内容的网站（暂定2008年1月19日下午13：30）
1. 从静态样式页面到动态主题页面的过程，从美工的DIV/CSS如何插入Drupal
2. 几个重要的建站元素（Region, content type ,view）
3. 一些“内核”外常用的模块

f) upload
g) sitemap

第三步: 自己写/修改module （暂定2008年1月26日下午13：30）

在DrupalChina可以看出来中国有大量的Drupal用户，也一定会有很多在北京，让我们聚在一起聊聊Drupal，看看大家都是如何使用Drupal的。第一次聚会，我们可以介绍自己，然后聊聊Drupal的使用。然后我们秀出自己在Drupal上更深入的使用技巧。比如我们可以讨论Drupal Module开发，也可以集中精力在Theme上。最重要的是我们聚在一起，围绕Drupal建立我们自己的群体！

Its a subtle change but a change. After sometime was spent trying to contact the owner of this group I went ahead (with the help of the admins) and assumed control over the group to help pump some new blood into the group and getting people together.

HEY BEIJINGers! My name is Jacob Redding and I'm a recent transplant to Beijing and as fate has it I'm destined to stay here for quite some time. I'm a massive Drupal fanatic recently from New York City that is currently finding himself buried in Chinese textbooks as I work my way through learning the language. As a incredibly huge fan of OSS and Drupal I can't help but to get involved in the local communities and help bring people together. I've asked around but I haven't found an active Drupal group of people that are meeting in Beijing.

I am a developer working here in Beijing. Our company is looking for a developer for a Drupal-based site either as a regular employee or freelancer. Our preference is for a local chinese hire although a non-chinese is possible if they have extensive experience.

I won't get into details as I know there are only a few members in this group. So for now I am just wondering whether any of the group members are based in Beijing and looking for work...
