Volunteer --Web Instructor | BDPA-Detroit - Non profit IT professionals organization
If you possess web programming, database basics, and management skills, BDPA-Detroit needs your skills, time, and talent!
Throughout the year, BDPA-Detroit conducts a High School Computer Competition training program for the youth in our communities. The program is designed to expose our youth to the concepts of computers and give them the expertise to develop web applications. Each year we send one team of 3 to 5 students to the National Conference to compete against teams from chapters all over the country.
The BDPA National High School Computer Competition, (HSCC), was founded in 1986 by Dr. Jesse Bemley, of Washington, D.C. What started as a two-team event between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, Ga. has grown to over 20 teams of various high school students from chapters throughout the nation. It's all designed to introduce our Youth to the field of Information Technology, encourage them to seek higher levels of education, and groom many of them to become our next generation of IT professionals.
In August 2009, the top 5 students from the training program, get to showcase their talents in the National Competition which consists of a timed computerized written exam, oral questions and the development of a web application per specifications. If they feel creative, they can also participate in a T-Shirt Design Competition.
We are looking for trainers to help us train students for the National Competition. The training occurs on Saturdays starting in January. Here's a short breakdown of the courses and the length of time it takes to train the students on the subject matter:
HTML 3 weeks
Javascript 2 weeks
Foundation for JSTL 2 weeks
Introduction to JSTL 4 weeks
Intermediate JSTL 4 weeks
Complex Queries 2 weeks
Using Databases 3 weeks
Computer Science Topics 4 weeks
Project and Time Management 2 weeks
If you can volunteer for 1 or more courses depending on your Saturday availability. The HSCC program is a conduit to aid us with closing the Digital Divide gap.
Give back to the community and make a difference in a student's life!
