Three ways to create classified ads/business directory: reviews

As far as I can tell there are three primary avenues to creating the functionality needed for classified ad or business directory websites. I'm about to test each of them so that I can figure out which is best for my purposes, so I thought I'd post here and see if anyone has any experience with these modules and can help out. When I'm finished testing them myself, I'll post the results here.

The three avenues (as far as I can tell, if there are others, please let me know) are:

Classified Ads Module along with lm_paypal and probably some cck stuff.

PayPal Node with Simple Paypal and probably Taxonomy Fields.

Pay2Publishand E-commerce and probably Taxonomy Fields.

Generally, I'll probably assume the use of Views and CCK, and here's the functionality I'll be looking for:

The classified ad/entry must:

expire automatically

allow anonymous contact

be buyable online

allow different prices based on what the ad contains (e.g. whether it has photos or not), where it will appear, and how long it will run

Build a community ask/answer website | Individual

I'm looking for someone to build the code for a question and answer site for a small community. I'm currently leaning towards implementing Drupal, but open to persuasion for other base architectures.

Site should include functionality of the ask.metafilter site; developer should be familiar (or familiarize him/herself) with its uses and implementation.

Looking for swift turnaround, with attention to detail and someone with an easygoing nature.

Location does not matter.

Please provide a bid for the project, rather than an hourly rate.

I have already completed a detailed site map and description.

Note: This site is not intended to compete with ask.metafilter, but to service a specific community with narrow interests and expertise.

Complex classifieds system, how to start one?

Hi,

I am pretty new in Drupal and have a task to build classifieds site. Just getting into understanding into cck, views etc...
First I chose to try some of the frameworks like cake, codeigniter, zend and similar, but they are too much time consuming to develop even simple user anthentication so I went to Drupal.

My requirements are:

MAJOR:
1. Classifieds are in categories (auto, furniture, jobs, pets, technics etc.)
2. Categories can have other sub-categories inside (auto -> vw,ford, ferrari, jobs -> temporary, permanent, part time) and even deeper, without limiting depth.
3. Classifieds have the same data fields between them (price, main text content, city, contacts etc.) AND distinctive, depending on category: if user selects, that he wants to place ad in "auto" section, then he can select "fuel type: gadoline or diesel", "transmision type: auto or manual" if user selects to place ad on "jobs" then aditional fields like "job type: permanent, temporary..." and amount of monthly (houtly) salary...
4. Classifieds can have different states of their visibility, promotion status etc... For example, visible/template/expired/archive ads, and promoted/vip/vip of vip :) ads. One state, like visibility (template, normal ad, expired) is fully controlable by user, other state - also, but only after he payed through payment gateway...
5. Classifieds should have ability to change their state after some amount of time: for example, move from "normal" to "expired" state after 2 weeks, and automatically delete after 4 weeks.
6. Classifieds should trigger multiple actions after specified amount of time: for example send email to user 24hours before expiration and etc.
7. Photo upload for images - should be easy
8. Images with watermarks - found module
9. Various display types, ordering, filtering etc.. - views should help
10. Advanced serch: user should be able to search all the text AND only selected category/categories
11. Users should be able to modify their ads: edit, delete, promote etc.
12. Admins or other superior role user can do everything registered user can, also change roles of the users, change their permitions
13. Categories can have manually or automatcally edited "similar categories" lists.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
1. Limit user groups to some amount of ads (nodes) in period of time, for example 10 free ads in 24hours, other limits to "vip" users :)
2. SEO friendly urls - already know ;)
3. RSS generation - easy :)
4. Capcha, antispam - many modules...
5. Users adn anonymous visitors can write messages about inappropriate ads
6. Ads can be commented/rated - know how.

EXAMPLE:
I am trying to build a site, which is superior to this. It is in lithuanian, but you will understand main things.
http://www.skelbiu.lt/ title page
http://www.skelbiu.lt/skelbimai/nekilnojamasis-turtas/namai/ real estate->houses section
http://www.skelbiu.lt/skelbimai/paslaugos-darbas/darbo-paieska/ services -> job offers
http://www.skelbiu.lt/skelbimai/transportas/automobiliai/ford/ cars->ford, you can see, that data fields differ from the one in real estate
http://www.skelbiu.lt/3340998.html single car classified

So, my main concern is how to build the workflow, seems, that all presentation stuff will wait. With which modules I should start with? I know, it will not be easy out of the box solution, I will check http://drupal.org/project/ed_classified but I guess it lacks many of these features... I can join on developing some of "glue" modules for cck, views or to expand ed_classified, but I am not experienced to carry this alone.

Is anyone working on it? Any live examples????
Please conatct pm me, or this thread :)

For a full time position we would like someone who is skilled with php & mysql.

We have several projects ready to start and are looking for employees or contract coders ASAP.

PayPal Node module open for testing

I've just updated my PayPalNode module which handles classifieds using per taxonomy term pricing calculations to make charging for a content-type more flexible.

It's available now for 5.x and is live on one site already.

If anybody else would like to test it and give feedback that would be great. I'm not looking for new feature ideas at present.
If everything works, I'd like to get a 1.0 release out.

Find it on the project page.

Citizen Media Summit, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Ifra, the international technical organization for newspapers, is sponsoring a three-day summit/workshop on citizen media 2-4 July at the Park Royal Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. The official description follows:

The newspaper is under attack by the new media. All over the world, citizen journalism sites are popping up like mushrooms. And as the internet matures, you can be sure there will be more blogs, more aggregators, more Googles and more tools will give the reader a huge range of options to choose from.

How can your company cope with the biggest challenge it has ever faced? Come join us to learn from the panel of experts from Korea, USA and UK for 3 days workshop.

Tuition is 1300 Euros for Ifra members, 1400 for nonmembers. I'm scheduled to be on the "faculty" along with Kevin Anderson of the Guardian, Jean Min of OhMyNews, and Robb Montgomery of VisualEditors.com. There's still room left to join the workshop. Download the brochure.

I anticipate discussing community and social capital, the Bluffton print-online model, and opportunities around aggregation and organization of existing citizen media. I'll be using Drupal as a tool, highlighting its capabilities in the area of facilitating self-publishing, ranking/ratings, social networking, and aggregation.

(Note: Ifra is covering my travel expenses for this project, but I'm not being paid.)

Wish List

There are some features that I think would be very useful to a classifieds section. So far, I haven't seen them in a drupal install, but here they are:

image gallery

If you're selling something, perhaps you want to show multiple images of the item you're selling, like on ebay. My classified nodes are done in CCK, and the image field (using image_attach) is just for a single image. If you want to allow more images, I suppose you can create say 5 image fields, but then how should those images be displayed on the node so that it's pretty?

search query with filters

I haven't been using the search engine module on my drupal installations, but in terms of allowing users to generate a list of nodes according to what they're looking for, Views is superior to the search engine. What I'd be interested in seeing is a marriage of sorts where you can perform a keyword search but at the same time apply various filters (including location).

Different ways to create classified ads

There are currently a couple of different ways to create classified ads in Drupal. Here they are:

CCK and Views

On the classified section for my site, I'm using CCK, Views and Contemplate (Content Template). CCK allows me to create a node type (classifieds in this case) and determine what fields I want in it. Content Template allows me to display how I want the ad itself to look, and Views allows me to create a list, and have users filter it and find only the listings they want.

Here is what my classifieds page looks like

Here is what an individual ad looks like. Notice that a bunch of the fields are in a table. That is the work of Contemplate.

Flexinode and Views

Here's a how-to guide on doing it this way. Although I've never used Flexinode, it apparently allows you to create content types, although perhaps it's not as robust as CCK. If you also follow the example that's given, you'll notice that the individual ads aren't styled, so I'm not sure if styling is possible with this method.

Module?
