Hi y'all,
Just trying to gauge the interests for a more casual, hands-on meeting this weekend...
Since Dave's presentation on CCK & Views2, I've been trying to work with the 2 incredible modules and I'm sure most of you are doing the same. I thought may be we can show each other our work, and may be learn from each other?
Also, during our "pre-meeting meeting" :) at Pacific Coffee, we had come up with an idea of a HKDUP online sandbox, where we can log on and mess around and learn. At the time, we decided it was perhaps unnecessary... but now, I'm thinking may be it's a good idea after all! Wouldn't it be nice if we can have a sandbox with Dave's CCK & Views2 magic recreated online, so we can really dig in and learn from it... and then do it on our own localhost dev environment?
Just throwing some ideas out and staring a conversation.
Cheers,
Nick

A few questions
Thank you Dave! Coffee is on me! :)
I'm guessing Sat 3pm will be better than Sun 12 noon, since people may want to sleep in on Sunday.
OK, let me show u guys what I've done. I'm just trying to recreate a single blog content view - like one wordpress blog post, b'coz the "blog" node type that comes w/ Drupal is pretty boring...
So next, I applied some of the Ninja skills Dave taught us last Thursday, and here's the result!!! (See attachment below "Drupal6 localhost_1222706418289")
Ohhh I'm so excited!! :D OK, and here's the View2 edit page.
Now, I have a few questions for you more advanced users.
Wow... lots of questions popping up. How are you guys doing? Is everyone having no problem w/ Views2?! For me, having a hands on meeting this weekend would be awesome... how about you guys??
Not quite sure
I'm not quite sure what you are trying to do with your view. I'm getting the impression that you just want to tweak the layout of how the node looks at node/2 . Though you might be able to get Views to do some of that (But with a whole lot of advanced work), this is really more of a theming issue. You can control the field labels at admin/content/node-type/****/display. For controlling the actual placement of fields, and other htmlish stuff see this handbook: http://drupal.org/node/62462
Yup it is. But then you can't do things like making a view of all videos on the site, or all images. Nor can you do things like create a list view where each node's image is placed in the same spot, and of the same size (like the staff view that we took a look at last week). But for a blog you often want to be able to have the flexibility to place your media in different places in the body, that is, if your users are competent enough to be able to figure it out.
If what you're trying to do is simply theme the node, this becomes a moot point.

Dave, thanks for your
Dave, thanks for your reply... (I'm asking such noob questions, I'm getting on my own nerves!) I guess I'll ask you more in depth when I see u on Saturday, but generally speaking, the presentation of individual nodes (be it the built-in blog node w/ added CCK fields, or whole new CCK custom content / node type like a "restaurant"), we should just let Drupal handle the output via localhost/node/1 ... and use CSS to style + layout.
And we use Views to create things like a list of blog teasers in reverse chronological order... ... Umm... do we also use Views to create the navigations on the sidebars? I believe those are Blocks right? So like, "Recent Comments", "Latest Posts"... do we create the blocks in Views2, and then also create a page layout with the blog / nodes displayed on the main content area, and all the navigation blocks in the sidebar area. Is this done in Views2?
Sorry guess I missed last
Sorry guess I missed last meeting, I can feel that it is a good one as it can motivate some of you to get your hands dirty right away. I wonder if there is any screencast or keynote of some kind.
Moreover, I would like to see interaction between, CCK, Views and Panels module. As I am kind lazy to do theming with code, I would like to use Panels to do some "layout-ing". Is there any Panels expert around? It would also be help to most of us.
Btw, what drupal version did Dave shows you? D5 or D6 ?
Vid of first session coming... today?
Hey there... I am still trying to upload vid from our first HKDUG meet. It's abt 2hrs of vid tho... and even divx compressed at 640x480 it's still 750mb. :) So thinking of splitting it into 10 minute sections or something and uploading to Google Video. Any suggestions?
DigitalFreak: Dave showed us some of what we can do with D6, CCK, and Views 2. Very inspiring stuff!
Cheers,
Tony

You could try uploading the vid to The Internet Archive so you don't have to split it up... http://www.archive.org/create/

got it up
Hey y'all... sorry it took so long (prob should've started with much smaller files to upload).
Anyway, you can see part 1 on CCK here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7921031686498582649&hl=en
And part 2 on Views 2 here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7921031686498582649&hl=en
Not the highest quality (can't read small text on screen) but you can follow along in the power point and get the idea.
I would like to make it to Saturday's meet up. I am playing with D6 CCK and Views 2 + Simpleviews now... what fun!

Thanks for the upload!!!!
And all the work in transcoding them into DivX! That must've taken a long time too!
Do we want to set the meeting at 3pm Sat in Festival Walk's Pacific Coffee again? I just hope we can find good seats this time as there'll be more people than last time at 10am. Also, we need to consider internet connections... would be nice if we can find a place w/ free wifi. Any other suggestions for location?
thanks - but something odd
Thanks for uploading those.
Is it just me, or are those two links identical and both point to a file called 2.MPG.AVI ?
I did a search on google videos for "hk drupal" which found two videos - the above and 3.MPG.AVI

Currently downloading, so I'm just assuming they are the right ones. :)

My mistake!
Well spotted... That's what you get with copy/paste when you are tired :)
CCK is 2.mpg.avi and Views 2 is 3.mpg.avi ( http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8307573578179775371&hl=en )

Kosmo has free wifi
I don't know about any free wifi in TST, but Kosmo Cafe by Lan Kwai Fong has free wifi... dunno how busy it would be at 10 am on a Saturday. How many people are we expecting? Maybe we could reserve a few tables?

Confirmed 3pm at Kosmo Coffee?
this one? - http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/sr2.htm?shopid=10291
Probably less people than Festival Walk... but could still be quite busy in Central... any other suggestions?
I've been to this place for the HK Flickr meetup - http://www.mackiekitchen.com/ (http://www.flickr.com/groups/hongkong/discuss/72157605184679492/) It's kinda far & hidden away in an alley, so hopefully it'll be quieter.
A vote?
That's the one...
That's the one... does Mackie Kitchen have wifi? 3pm good for me.
