Two Weeks to Go! Drupal Camp Alberta 2008 Updates

In just two weeks, Drupal designers and developers from Alberta, BC, PEI & Montana will gather at the University of Lethbridge for Drupal Camp Alberta 2008.

In the past week - we secured our speakers & sponsors, opened registration and are expecting approx 100 attendees - many of who are holding out on registration right now :-)

If you haven't registered already, please take the time to sign up - your commitment of $30 gets you in for two days, provides you a beer, some food, and a shirt - pretty good deal, and accessible to students, and those without luxury expense accounts.

Much has happened over the past week that I'd like to share:

We dropped the sponsor rates, due to the generosity of the University of Lethbridge - they are providing top - rate facilities that dropped our facility budget a ton. We will be holding our workshops at the University's Health & Wellness Facilities in a beautiful lecture theatre and three breakout rooms.
The stand up guys at Drupal Camp Vancouver committed some surplus cash they hand on hand from their camp. What a bunch of solid guys - this helps the short term cashflow a ton!
We've decided on a t-shirt design. Breaking from tradition, we designed a shirt that follows fashion trends a little closer than Drupal trends, but we think we'll be OK (Drupal Camp, Boot Camp, Military Crest - you get the connection.
Accomodation at the University Student housing is still just $40 / person. They run it like a hotel (with towel service, etc.) in the summer months.
Speakers showed up! We've got a great lineup ranging from a 300 Drupal Multi-Site Installation Case Study, to the Services Module - by the Module maintainer himself! We've got a talk for everybody - Designers and Business types should get equal benefit from Jess McMullin's testing & taxonomy talk - as well as my theming how-to. Newbies will get a foothold on Drupal vs. Joomla! vs. CakePHP from Daniel @ image X, and developers will dive into google maps & new module overviews equally well.
We've got a code sprint recipient! Amanda Stepenko (Olympic Bobseld Hopeful) is looking for a site to raise sponsor awareness. I will create the photoshop mockup for my Zen subtheming talk, and together at the conference the codesprint participants will bring the site to life!
Birds of a Feather sessions, Networking night, Track, Gym, Hiking, Art Gallery & More at the venue.

DCA08 is unlike any corporate conference you've ever attended - and for good reason. Focusing on "Drupal" - an open source content management system and application framework, DCA08 is a low-cost, highly collaborative "unconference" held in at the University of Lethbridge, in Southern Alberta, Canada.

Gone are the days of sponsored vendor presentations and for-profit registration fees. Our peer taught, volunteer-run sessions will by heavy with "doers", and light on the "talkers".

After a short discussion with the powers that be at the University of Lethbridge, I have full approval to host Drupal Camp Alberta 2008 in June or early July.

Our facilities are top notch http://www.uleth.ca/conference/ (open WIFI, theatres, breakout rooms, entertainment and fitness facilities, AND campus housing summer rentals) - so we are going to take the bull by the horns and spread the word.

I know the organizers for DCV08 put it together at the speed of light, we are going to follow suit.

As we cross over into Drupal 6 I would like to start thinking about what would really push Drupal 6 or possible Drupal 7 to the next level, and seeing as a select few of us are located here in Edmonton I think it would be great if we could work together and create a very successful addition to Drupal, as well connect to the local development community.

Some of the topics which have caught my interest for Drupal 6/7 are the following:

Form Builder
A generic form building UI for use with contributing modules such as webForm. This module has already begun development but from the recent examples it does not look to be something I'm very happy with.
Content Browser
Generic content browseing UI for elegant JavaScript browsing/selecting of nodes, terms, custom data etc. This module could allow other modules to do things such as replace cck's node reference autocomplete fields which could be a content browser widget providing the client with a intuitive and simplistic way to select content.
Finish/Extend my Chart API ;)

Many of the larger task are already being developed by senior Drupalers but I would love to help contribute with something useful, preferably API's which would prove useful to other modules and extend Drupal as a whole.

Drop a line if anyone is interested, and feel free to post what you think would be a great asset to extend Drupal.

...not even sure how to post a message. Should I use Event (which I used for this post)? or Story?

I recently discovered the Drupal world and am actively seeking info on building (rebuilding, actually) an existing static html site. Have done the following so far:

Ordered a Drupal book from Chapters which has yet to arrive
Cruizing the interweb for info
Installed Drupal on my home PC
