Help! Need Drupal speaker(s) - last minute 10-24 7:00pm in Broward

Hi Miami Drupal - I just got a note from a group that needs a last minute Drupal presentation in Broward this Friday, Oct 24 at 7:00pm.

The original speaker had to go out of town at the last minute and I will be out of town Friday as well. What a drag, I would have loved to have done it.

The group is a Web, Print and Marketing group so I would guess they would be most interested in some theming how-to stuff but no heavy PHP.

Since this is a last minute thing I don't think they would expect a super formal presentation. They do have a projector screen.

Please contact me (through contact is easiest) and I can pass the details on to you. I hope someone can help - this would be a great way to expose Drupal to more people.

Thanks - Howard

Miami Meetup Wed 10/15 at Books and Books

This month's meetup will be happening at (you guessed it!) Books and Books in Coral Gables.

This month we'll be looking at ways to extend the Drupal interface, especially for administration. We'll look at custom management menus and AJAX user interfaces, and anything else you feel is life-altering.

We'll also be soliciting input for future meetup topics and other events and training in the Miami area... BarCamp anyone?

I look forward to seeing all of you there!

Voce Communications, in partnership with Rollins College will host the third edition of this FREE event that was open to bloggers and non-bloggers alike from Florida and anywhere else. We bring together a good cross-section of folks to discuss blogging, podcasting, public relations, social media, citizen's journalism and other related topics. The event was as much a social/family gathering as it is a 'work' gathering.

Past Keynote Sessions include Shel Israel and Chris Heuer, along with organizer Josh Hallet. This year's lineup has grown from one to four to five sessions (now in the third year).

Hi Florida Drupalistas.

I'll be in Miami the week of July 7th and I thought I'd try and meet some of you.

I've been working with Drupal for 3+ years. I run a company called Digital202, a full service web development shop headquartered in New York. We build beautiful, content managed websites with a focus on online communities and social networks. We support a geographically distributed model which lets us work effectively with exceptionally skilled people around the world. We have superb Drupal skills on our distributed team. We've built sites like Data.org and RoushFenway.com and more, and our portfolio is steadily growing.

I'd be happy to meet, especially if you might be in the market for our services. I am in Miami often.

I can be reached at dave [at] digital202.com or at 646-536-7502.

All the best,

June Miami Drupal meetup: Drupal 6

For our June meetup we'll be covering the features and challenges that Drupal 6 brings with it.

We'll cover the major modules:
* CCK
* views
* organic groups
* theming module
...

We can also cover issues around architecture and implementation. Our goal should be having everyone walk out with a strategy for when and how to use Drupal 6 for their own work.

265 Aragon Avenue

We're looking for a good Drupal 6 case study for this meetup... any volunteers?

May Miami Meetup - Coral Gables Books and Books

Our May meetup will be happening at Books and Books again. Try to RSVP early so we can get an idea of headcount, so we know where to reserve table space.

The agenda is still open, so please feel free to suggest topics in the comments. If they're more than we can cram in to the May meeting, we'll just have great material for June.

I looking forward to seeing you there.

Great meetup... fantastic turnout

It was well worth putting off the Miami meetup for a week. It was very well attended, with about a dozen drupaleros from publishing, development, and design backgrounds, as well as some heavy hitters in the arts and philanthropy.

Most of all, the evening did wonders to make us all feel that there was a critical mass of good talent in Miami, let alone the rest of South Florida

Topics covered

Since it was more of a kickoff than anything, we did introductions and talked about our depth of experience in Drupal (mostly measured in months). There was a really loose agenda, which evolved into some serious tech talk about modules and techniques, and an interesting presentation by Robertson Adams of the Knight Foundation.

We also discussed the importance of setting up training and mentorship to grow the Drupal community in South Florida. We'd like to start a sort of buddy system, where newbies are matched with more seasoned pros to get them over the initial hurdle. We also talked about different possible venues for training.

[By the way, if you are new to Drupal and haven't formally joined this group, we won't know you're interested unless you join and speak up]

Scheduling future meetups

We passed around a sheet with possible times for our next meetup. From the looks of things it's a toss-up between third Wednesdays or third Thursdays, with May 14 or 15 being our next meetup. Please feel free to chime in and let us know what works out best for you!

Also, please RSVP (or sign up) for the meetings on the groups page, as it makes it easier to know how much space to ask for.

Agendas for future meetings

I'm open to ideas and topics for our next meetup. I think there is real value to being able to fire up a laptop an show some work and talk shop. However, the social side of things is crucial, too. The evenings should be split roughly half-and-half between the two around a strong theme.

Co-chair(s) wanted

I would also look to have a co-chair or co-admin or two to help manage the group, organize the meetups and keep in touch with everyone. For someone that's a bit new to Drupal, it would be a good way to establish strong rapport with the other group members.

For those of you who came to the meetup, it was a real pleasure to meet you in person and talk Drupal.

Saludos,

NEW TIME AND NEW LOCATION!

Son of DrupalCon in Miami?

Since there's at least 6 of us that made it up to Boston's DrupalCon event, there's no better excuse to have a meetup to share the wealth with those that couldn't manage the trip.

The Knight Foundation played a very prominent role at DrupalCon, and Studio:Module started a Design Outreach program aimed at making Drupal more accessible to a broader user base, particularly in the creative field. Watch http://designfordrupal.org over the next few months for developments.

I propose a Thursday night at Novecento in Brickell or at Books and Books in the Gables.

Any takers?

Drupal training wish list

Here's where you can add your choices to a list of topics and venues for Drupal training in South Florida:

topics

intro to Drupal: installation, requirements, getting started

theming with PHP template: turning even the most complicated designs into Drupal themes

possible training venues

first venue

second venue

Would like to see discussions on following:

drupal best practices,

basic module development and core logic - pretty much a follow-up of topics covered by the Drupal developers book

general get together to meet people of same interests

Training venues - somewhere between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. I know PHP Users group meet at Dave and Busters in Hollywood - off of 95.

John G.

Drupal training

This is to see what sort of interest there may be in the South Florida community for setting up training programs for Drupal in South Florida. Personally, I'd be interested in teaching a theming workshop and an introduction to Drupal for those of you just starting out.

If you're interested in setting up a workshop, please post to this thread. If you know someone that's interested that's just starting to explore Drupal, please forward this post or encourage them to join the Miami group.

Thoughts and Ideas on the Miami Drupal Scene

Hello Miami Drupal people,

It's been a while since anyone has posted anything so I thought I would thought I would present some ideas. Hopefully this will stimulate some feedback, thoughts, etc.

Quite frankly I see a lot of value in meeting other Drupal people in the area, not only for networking and all of that business and career stuff, but for a variety of other reasons as well. One of the things I am noticing lately is that there is an unscripted and non-centralized gathering of technology people meeting up in groups and exchanging information, yet not though the auspices of some large corporate entity. What seems to be happening is that some companies and independent workers are establishing partnerships and networks that are both flexible and efficient.

I am wondering if anyone would be interested in starting, helping start, or participating some sort of "Bar Camp" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_camp) type event similar to what is going on in the San Francisco bay area. We could expand into all sorts of related open source topics. While not specifically Drupal related, there is a Saturday event in downtown Miami some people may be interested in - see http://fsf.meetup.com/28/about

I look forward to your opinions.

This position is located in New York City. We will pay relocation expenses for the right candidate.

PHP-Nuke developer to Drupal

My name is Emil and I have over 5 years of experience with PHP and MySQL. I have focused my work primary in PHP-Nuke as a framework developing my own modules and I have been able to get the job done to all my clients.

I have lately read a lot about Drupal and I'm willing to give it a try. One of the thing I have notice is that once you are used to work with any other framework the migration is harder for you than for the code or data. Why? Because in the previously used framework you know the name of the custom functions and classes and the feeling of being lost in the new framework can be frustrating.

I know that there is a big community of PHP-Nuke willing to migrate to Drupal, but the feeling of the unknown if really big. I plan to fully understand all the Drupal advantages and help all those stuck take the step forward the migration.

If you really understand how Drupal works, please feel free to drop few lines. The videocasts on the site are great to install and manage, but when can we have a videocast for developing a “Hello world” module or making few hacks.
