drupal theme 6.x development | catavo

full theme development for a non-for profit group that is moving into a drupal 6.x environment. current site is out of date and we are moving into drupal, hence the need/want to redevelop an entire theme. We have a logo and print that we want the theme to be built around. please contact for more info.
[update]
here are itemized of what we are looking for
- I am interested in updating a current theme (your choice) rather than develop a theme from scratch.
(its for a non-profit org) ;)
- Also we very much want drop down menus (superfish or suckerfish, not sure what the difference is)
- we want at least 2 columns (main & couple of info blocks on one side (calendar of events, what new, etc)
Thanks!

Themer | MR Paintball

A nice little project for a high quality Drupal theme designer.

I am building a community site for a special niche of hardcore paintball players. I am looking for a Drupal theme designer who can build (or adapt existing) a high quality Drupal theme that will totally rock the users minds. I need someone who can understand military-simulation types, you know, the kids who love to play counterstrike and fantasize about being the elite soldier. I need a "mil-sim" theme that still reeks of paintball. Of course, I will be looking for graphic asset production too for as much as is necessary to give me that killer looking site.

Please contact me to discuss your rates and get a feeling for how big the project is. I am easy going guy and looking to hire creativity foremost.

Looking for Good Resources for Drupal 6 Themes

Hey Theme Gurus,
I'm a theme newbie looking for good how-to resources for the theme engine in Drupal 6. I'm just starting to learn PHP, but I've been web programming with other modern OO languages for the past 10 years. I've hacked around with some of the themes freely available on drupal.org to try to learn it myself, but it's proving to be a little overwhelming.

To help myself out, I recently pre-ordered my copy of Drupal 6 Themes, by Ric Shreves, which is due to release any day now. Does anyone know if Ric's previous theme book for Drupal 5 gave a good introduction to themes? Has anyone come across any other resources, such as podcasts or step-by-step tutorials, that give a well-rounded primer to Drupal 6 themes?

Brian

CS4 Party site launched with Zen Theme

Earlier this week I launched http://cs4party.com to promote the celebration our Los Angeles Adobe User Groups are holding for Adobe. I used Strata 3D, exported to H.264 video which I converted to FLV with Flash CS3, and made a SWF header to play and loop the FLV video. Zen was used entirely, so I have a cs4party sub-zen-theme that is literally my first public Zen theme, ever. FYI, the site is Drupal 6.

CSS Debugger/Theming Guru | Parents Magazine

I have a fairly specific request for a CSS/theming guru looking for a quick freelance project. We need someone to do CSS debugging and cross-browser compatibility work. The pay will be competitive.

I'm an editor at Parents and I've been working on a reader advisory board website for the magazine. It's totally built, just going through some design tweaks. We have a custom theme with--of course--lots and lots of tweaks, but it's only been tested in Firefox, which was the development environment. We're at the stage now where I'm simply too busy to finish out the CSS debugging/conditional commenting/etc. myself. Plus I don't have access to a PC, which is obviously a problem! So we're looking for someone who can help us make the site compatible across the usual range of browsers.

Unfortunately, I don't really know how long this might take. For me—probably a few weeks at least. For someone with lots of CSS experience who knows how to wrangle IE into submission—probably much less. :) So if you're interested, email at amanda.wolfe@meredith.com. I'll provide you with access to the site and the stylesheets and you can let me know how long you think it would take you/how much work is involved. From there we'll negotiate an hourly rate or flat fee, depending. If you could provide examples of your work (links are fine) and give me some quick background on your qualifications as a CSS guru, that would be great.

We have a decent-sized budget behind this initiative, so let me know if you want to take this on!

Thanks!
Amanda

Workflow for engaging designers/themers in core patch reviews?

At Drupalcon Szeged, I had some discussions with the documentation team and the usability team regarding workflow for getting their feedback injected early into the core development process. I'd like to start a similar discussion here with you folks.

Drupal 7 with its code freeze date of "When it's ready" represents a great opportunity for us all to collectively "kick it up a notch." Key to this is involving many more people in the core development process than we normally have. There are always several relatively minor core patches that affect themers in the queue at any given time, such as add $node_classes to node templates, as well as huge, over-arching efforts such as administration theme in core.
But unfortunately, a lot of these patches stagnate and die, because designers have not traditionally been a group of people that we've served particularly well. I'd like to see that changed.

I'd love to brainstorm ideas on:
1. How can we facilitate a core group of designers ("design team") working together to tackle of these larger issues to make Drupal 7 beautiful and more approachable for themers/designers?
2. How best to funnel down "patches that affect themers" so that you can offer your thoughts on them?
3. How to setup some "Design Sanity Check" guidelines that developers need to adhere to just as they do coding standards and automated test requirements?
4. How we compile a list of your "itches" that are barriers to new designers getting involved, and attract developers to work on these issues?
5. Other thoughts you have on this or any related topic.

So let's hear it. What can I as a core co-maintainer do to help you all make Drupal 7 kick the design and theming crap out of any other Drupal release to date? :)

CSS Coding Standards

Hi all,
I'm at the documentation sprint.
I would like to propose some CSS coding standards, to accompany the PHP coding standards, along with the proposed Javascript standards.

I've added a handbook page at
http://drupal.org/node/302199
Discussion should be in this thread, and the handbook page updated as necessary.

Stella, the Coder module maintainer, has promised to add this to Coder module, once the dust settles on the dissussion.

Color.module demo

Hi, I wanted to point you guys to a demonstration of color.module I am working on.

http://www.skiquel.com/lab/drupal-6/ - You should be able to get to try it as 'user' and 'admin', and play around with the scheme functionality.

There is bugs. And bringing them to my attention helps. Some bugs may be small, others big -- either way I usually get them fixed fast. I can't fix what I don't know is broken. :) If you have any design suggestions/considerations please mention. If you have opinions or feelings, please tell how you feel as a themer.

Also, theme devs can look over the different ways color.module can be used with the examples provided. These demonstrations are using the Zen theme. So I kind of wanted to give them a shout because they helped me bring my themes back from death -- and are bring presented simultaneous with this demo. (Nista, Spooner, Splender, Simpla, Cleanstate)

Getting the code

Testers/Devs can go grab the DRUPAL-6 module at:

cvs -z6 -d:pserver:anonymous:anonymous@cvs.drupal.org:/cvs/drupal-contrib checkout -r DRUPAL-6--1 -d color contributions/modules/color_soc08

Quick setup

Switch back to Garland.

Backup your current /themes and /modules/color folders. Move them elsewhere temporarily.

Then themes from the /examples folder to your /themes. *Make sure not to leave our your themes/engines folder from your default install*.

Copy the new color.module in /color.

Disable and Uninstall color.module -- now enable. This will insure the installer is hooked and that the tables are created.

Then you can choose to enable/generate color schemes on a per theme basis. :)

I have never really had other people try to install this before -- there is a more user-friendly installer system for the schemes underway -- I want to make sure I can at least get testers experienced with using Drupal locally to pull it off.

Tips for themers

Use the example theme's color.inc files to understand what's going on. They are well-documented.

Community

For help/bugs/questions/feature requests/contributing code etc. please visit the project page.

Edit: A few hours after I posted this and checked, there was a glitch with the demo site after it reset. It should be fixed. However if it does pop up again please say.

New default theme for D7

How about thinking about this.
Garland has had its time, and it starts to really hurt my eye.
Sure going for a recolorable theme is a given necessity.

I opt for Pixture, as I see it is very popular, and also because it looks "Joomly" (this may be a reason for people to NOT use it, I know ;) )
In is actual edition it has layout tables, but I'm working on this flaw with someone. Sure I'm not totally out of hunger for personal fame, but more importantly this would get away from the "Drupal looks like Garland" opinion.

Maybe this is already discussed and I'm only missing it?

Maybe collect candidates?

Stylish Userstyle for Drupal's CVS Repository

Hey All,

I created a Userstyle for http://cvs.drupal.org with Firefox (and the Stylish plugin), and I wanted to share it with the community. If you're interested, you can download/install it here: http://userstyles.org/styles/9338. Before and after screenshots are also attached.

For those who don't know what "Stlyish" is, it's a Firefox plugin that allows you to change the appearance of any website/page, by overriding the CSS. You can download it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108

Enjoy :)
Drupal color swatches for Adobe Creative Suite software

If you find yourself needing the official Drupal logo colors for your favorite Adobe design software then download free color swatch sets. Color swatches for Adobe Fireworks/Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and even InDesign are available for download for free.

Download the Drupal color swatch sets for Adobe software at XTND.US.

Fireworks (and Dreamweaver)

Photoshop (and InDesign)

Illustrator

Flash

Download either the ZIP file that has all the color swatches for all Adobe design products, or download the swatch file for your application. Note: InDesign users should download the two Photoshop swatch files, but we think you may only use the ASE file.

Theme for Umich Habitat for Humanity page

Hello A2Drupal!
I currently help the UM student chapter of Habitat for Humanity by providing support for their website (http://umhabitat.org). I set up a drupal cms for the group, and the site functions well for their purposes. Unfortunately, I have very little artistic ability, and even less graphic design sense. Therefore, the site uses the standard Drupal theme. Would anyone in this group know a design firm (or individual) who may be willing to donate their time to develop a theme for the site? Please feel free to email me at eric.roeder@gmail.com. Thanks for your help!

css for styling Drupal form labels & fields inline?

Does anyone have a generic CSS rule set for styling Drupal forms so that the field labels appear inline with their fields? I've worked on some projects where forms needed to be styled that way and while I've been able to get them working I've not been overly satisfied with the end result. I'm hoping that someone with more CSS chops might have already conquered the problem and be willing to share their solution.

I wrote a rough proof-of-concept Drupal module to apply Uni-Form CSS markup to Drupal forms, but for a variety of reasons (see "Uni-form Cons" below), it ended up being more kludgey than I had hoped. Does anyone have a more Drupal-specific CSS file, that I might use in the module instead of Uni-Form? If not, is anyone interested in working with me to come up with one?

Uni-form Cons
* Drupal's default form output isn't what Uni-Form expects, so there was a fair amount of theme overriding required.
* The Uni-Form inlineLabel styling doesn't seem to work well for fields with more than 2 or 3 checkboxes or radio buttons.
* Uni-Form's "blockLabels" style is similar to Drupal's default style, so about half of the Uni-Form CSS is superfluous within Drupal.
* Uni-Form is CreativeCommons licensed, so it would have to be downloaded separately.
* Uni-Form also includes a jquery script for highlighting fields, but it requires that the Jquery Update module be applied in order to work properly.

Just uploaded the iUI Drupal Theme that integrates websites on the iPhone quite nicely by utilizing the iUI User Interface Library. Would really appreciate some help on making it better.

For a demonstration of it being using on my website, visit http://www.robloach.mobi or click here.
Drupal Themer | CleftWorld

Hi,

for about a year now I've been running a site aimed at the global cleft lip/palate community which provides a resource for the community and raises funds for cleft operations in third world countries. I am now in the process of updating/rebuilding the site (Drupal 5.7) and am looking for someone who can build a theme for me, based on a Photoshop design. The site is to be re-launched during a cleft palate conference in early July.

The revised demo site can be viewed here: http://demos.kitsunedigital.com/cleftworld/ and you can download a design document and a breakdown here: http://demos.kitsunedigital.com/cleftworld/Archive.zip

Thanks very much.

Drupal themer | Nabuur.com

Drupal themer for a Global Neighbor Network: NABUUR.com

NABUUR is an Internet platform where villages in developing countries get direct assistance. Online volunteers help create whatever is needed in 150 villages now, and with your help in 10,000 villages soon.

We are urgently looking for a drupal themer to give: http://demo.nabuurtest.com/en/village/jinja-central the look of http://www.nabuur.com/modules/villages/mystory.php?villageid=428 .

We are saying the look, because the feel can be improved where possible, we really want to improve the the navigation though the site in this phase.

Please let us know what you can do for us by:

giving some (drupal) reference sites you have themed

an estimate how long it will take you to finish this

We like to go Beta with the new drupal driven site ASAP. In the second phase we want create a completely new design: an online experience of volunteering worldwide. Action!

Color.module - Questions for themers

I really need the help of the theming community on this one. It has to do with the way color.module fundamentally works and how it works with themes.

The comment here linked me to an implementation of a color-changing theme for joomla. It uses alpha-transparent PNG images and pure CSS to deliver theme changes on the fly. From the looks of it (I do not have an account there yet, but I'll buy one), essentially the layout is comprised solely of CSS and colorless transparent images.

Most of themes for drupal do not use Color.module. However, I believe they could be retrofitted to use color-switching easier/faster if we used this method. There doesn't need to be a script for filling or slicing a base_image - you can use your individual transparent PNG's straight out of shop.

I have a few questions for drupal themers out there:

Does the idea of having to code a file (color.inc) to slice and fill a color a base image deter you in any way from potentially utilizing it with your themes?

Do you think that there is more potential that slicing/filling through color.inc can have to enable themers?

Would you, as a themer grasp the concept of using alpha-transparent PNG's in your layouts? Would this make life easier or harder?

If you had a choice between the rockettheme-method (transparent png and CSS filling) and the old school way ($base_image, filling and cutting) which way would you go?

Is there anything that you can do through the "scripted method" of color theme generation that you would not get from CSS with a transparent PNG overlays?

Certain older browsers do not support alpha-transparency, and for them the only way they can see those colors is through the generated-image method. What about them?

Is there anything else that isn't mentioned here that should be? Benefits? Problems? Ideas?

Drupal API extension for Dreamweaver

XTND.US releases early preview download of their Drupal API extension for Dreamweaver. Reduce typing and get past plain text editing of Drupal files in Dreamweaver. If you are into Drupal and use, or want to use, Dreamweaver then you really need this extension. Let us save you tons of time by reducing keystrokes with our Drupal API code hints integration for Dreamweaver (API versions 5 & 6). The extension provides code hints and code coloring for every Drupal API method in Drupal 5 & 6.

Not only does it provide full Drupal API code hints (5.x & 6.x) in PHP files, but it also adds support for common Drupal file types, like .module, .theme, .info, .tal, etc., provides code coloring and code hints while editing those file types, treating them similar to common PHP pages. No more tweaking Dreamweaver's configuration manually, just download this free extension and makes Dreamweaver more useful when working on Drupal modules and themes.

View a demo video or download the extension at http://xtnd.us/dreamweaver/drupalapi.
Drupal Code Search: A new search tool for developers

I'd like to introduce you to an experimental project of mine called Drupal Code Search.

Drupal Code Search lets you search source code from thousands of Drupal modules and themes, use regular expressions, filter results by version, and more.

The goal of this project is to help themers and module developers find code examples faster and easier than before. Results are retrieved using the Code Search Data API.

Check the about page for more details. As I mentioned, this project is still experimental, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. :)

I hope you find it useful!

themer module integration into firebug firefox extension

themer module integrating into existing firebug firefox extension can put themer module out of JS and will give it a cool UI, it will help theme developers a lot.

Firebug helps in examining & editing webpages as a integrated part of Firefox, we can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page. it is a really very good extension much needed by every web developer,

as dldege suggested

in http://groups.drupal.org/node/9603

the themer module work is very similar to the "Inspect mode" of the Firebug FireFox add-on where you rollover an DOM item and get information in the variousl FireBug tabs, the themer module could be hooked directly into the FireBug add-on and a "drupal theme" tab could be added to the display options when doing an inspect. This would move the themer module UI out of the JS in the page and into FireBugs UI.

this integration will make theme development task quite easy.

The Best Ideas for a New WordPress Default Theme

http://themeshaper.com/the-best-ideas-for-a-new-wordpress-default-theme/

Here's all the ideas for a new wordpress default theme.

Default theme 1
* A set number of simple pre-defined layouts using accepted CSS techniques
* Speed as a priority with a minimal amount of functions in the theme
* Simple HTML with as little PHP as possible
* No changes necessary that cannot be accomplished through the admin panel
* A theme that follows best practices and can serve as a teaching tool and doesn’t aim to be the theme to end all themes

Default theme 2
* 110% of inline documentation, even in the stylesheet
* an example of how design, semantics, and web standards can work in unity with WordPress

Default theme 3
* Turn everything into a widget, so you can construct the layout of your page using drag-and-drop.
* Replace Classic with Sandbox and make it the fallback for themes lacking all possible templates
* Leave Kubrick as the default, it makes it easier to hunt out sploggers ;)

Individual ideas
* Theme choice become part of the install process
* A series of Sandbox Stylesheets become the new default
* a mini-database of WordPress how-tos (very cool)
* should look good as a blog and a CMS theme.

What are your ideas for a good Drupal 7 default theme?

Improving color.module for Drupal 7

The drupal color module, if utilized, is one of the most powerful modules in a theme developer's arsenal for extending their design. I feel that this module deserves attention and has the potential to expand.

As a drupal themer who has experimented with color themes and the color.module internals I have bumped into things that would really improve the coloring experience and the module's power/usefulness.

What can be changed with color.module now?

Tools for creating the perfect color set

I think we need support for more shades and harmonies. Proposed solution(s):

Below the color wheel offer buttons to Lighten, Darken, and Randomize current color.

? Adventurous people can click a "Randomize scheme" button which generates random hex seed that can fill in the labels with shades of the color.

Support for Color harmonies of a current color.

Beside the color wheel there will be a color suggestions panel of 4-6 boxes that the themer can then drag-n-drop to the color fields on the left. Below this panel can be a select box for users to discover more colors harmonized or shaded.

Under the hood

Keep the color changing within base_image and the CSS file. With support for unlimited defined colors handled through color_get_palette(), theme developers and webmasters will not have to have _color_shift() handle colors they wish to control.

theme_color_scheme_form() will have support for an optional custom preview.inc template, darken/lighten/randomize buttons and a “Color suggestions” panel.

New functions to create generate color harmonies and shade sets (for color suggestions panel), and functions to darken and lighten based on current color.

If color.module is available for current user theme, hook_user() an field for the user to choose from color sets.

Support for unlimited custom colors

Color labels can be misleading. Currently the only available colors are "Base color", "Link color", "Header top" and "Header bottom". I believe that this can be misleading, as there is no way to determine with relative certainty what color will be placed where. Proposed solution: Allow the theme developer to declare an array of "color fields". This would allow use of unlimited custom colors.

For example, a color.inc can contain an
$info = array('fields') => array('background', 'left sidebar background', 'right sidebar background', 'left sidebar border', 'link rollover color' 'link visited color')
- This can allow advanced color themers a more granular approach to providing pre-made color.module themes

Allow more gradients

Currently there is only support for one gradient. Proposed solution: Allow theme developer to specify multiple gradient arrays in color.inc.

Allow support for more complicated previews

Previews do not always hold true to the look of theme. Proposed solution: Allow for a custom preview.inc theme for more complicated previews

Undo/Redo options

Allow color users to undo mistakes by scrolling through past selected colors.

Allow webmasters to create new color sets

Let webmasters demonstrate their color creativity and customize themes to what they need. There is a variable_set() function for a reason, let's use it!

Allow ranks permission to choose color sets

Registered/anonymous users can be allowed to choose from color sets (pre-made and webmaster-made) if allowed in the permissions.

Proposed mock up

A usable admin theme

I've long since been frustrated about the bad usability of the admin parts of Drupal. While incremental improvements are constantly made, it seems that a big overhaul is necessary in order to move forward. I find it very inspirational to see how Wordpress has hired HappyCog to work on an improved admin interface, based on interviews, research and usability testing. There are some obvious lessons that Drupal can learn from this as well, both from their methods as well as the results. There's a lot of momentum in the community right now to make similar efforts, and I'd be happy to apply as a student to work on this during the summer.

I've seen various comments about how a SoC application should have enough coding in order to be suitable for Google, so I think that this project should probably adopt an agile method in order to make some serious progress. User research and usability testing should go hand in hand with designing concepts and wireframes, implementing them and refining them. Working from a limited set of persona's and scenarios should keep the scope confined and the project achieavable. I think that perhaps the resulting project can be integrated with a dedicated install profile for the target persona's, but I'm open for options here!

As far as coding goes, I'm muddling through - I know enough to make stuff work (or break), but it's definitely a weak spot for me. That said, I have enough experience with Drupal theming under my belt that I feel confident I'd produce a succesful outcome for this project. My focus will also not be on coding per se, but more in a series of coding experiments that should result in a conceptual remodeling of the Drupal admin interface, better information architecture, improved admin screens that combined should form a working admin theme.

I realise that there were a couple of efforts last year to create a decent admin theme, but in my humble opinion they failed to deliver any real improvements and weren't adopted by the community. I'm also aware of other efforts to improve Drupal usability, such as the rootcandy theme. While I think it's very promising, it's also 'merely' a theme. It does nothing to close the gap between the user's mental model and the system's mental model, the developer-oriented language and concepts used throughout, or the akward ordering in the administration menu (which was made painfully clear in the latest usability study). So I'd like to go further than a theme, e.g. by creating an install profile that brings such changes in as well. Like I said, I'm open for other ideas as well. Of course, I'd like to 'cherry-pick' the best ideas from all kinds of sources, and I'd be very happy to include other usability efforts.

What do you think, does this have any chance of succes?

Make Themes able to generate custom images for navigation links, page titles, and the website name

Have themes that could generate images for links so that navigation doesn't have to be plain text, or be able to generate an image for the title of a site or page so its easy to change the title of the site and still have it look fancy.

This could also include being able to customize the image such as by:

adding an icon - this could apply to a specific navigation item

setting the text color or font - this could apply to a specific item or be applied to all relevant items such as all page titles or all navigation links

Drupal 6 Theme Starter (Windows/Mac/Linux)

UPDATE: The application is available for download now for Windows and Mac OS X (an Adobe® AIR™ application).

XTND.US is getting ready to release our Drupal 6 Theme Starter application for public consumption. It's a small, freeware, will be beta (already is stable), and will run on Mac, Windows, and Linux desktops. This is truly for anyone who makes Drupal 6 themes.

This application generates the .info file for your custom themes and sub-themes. Why memorize all the things you have to type into .info files when you can point-and-click and make your theme's .info files in seconds not minutes.

View the video
or download the application now (AIR required).

The application requires AIR (Adobe® Integrated Runtime™) which is available at http://adobe.com/go/getair/.

People interested in being on the beta can comment here and <strike>we'll get to ya</strike> we'll answer any questions of issues you may have about the app.

P.S.> The application was made with Flex and compiled for the Adobe AIR runtime. If you dig this application then vote on this app over at the Flex showcase (search for "Drupal" in the showcase).

Pre-release video sneak: Dreamweaver Themer's Kit extension for Drupal

This had been leaked to LA Drupal in Jan. 2008, and now everyone can see a pre-release sneak video of an upcoming Dreamweaver extension, called Drupal Themer Kit Pro, previewed at http://xtnd.us/videos/drupal5.htm - the video features Drupal 5 Template Variables (Feature #2 of 5)

FAQ
When will it come out? 2008

How much will it cost or is it free? We're not saying yet, sorry.

What version of Dreamweaver does it work on? Probably MX-CS3, so that's like v.6-9, which is most of us DW lovers.

Can I get in on the beta? Yes. You're required to attend an LA Drupal meeting in person and ask to be on the beta... everyone else will know who you'll need to talk to since they're all on the beta already. ;)

Is this the same thing as that other Dreamweaver extension? No, but it's cool too, huh.

Please leave any questions, comments, and suggestions here. Thank you.

Development for Designers: would like assistance to create a place for designers to learn more about drupal development

Because of Drupal's special nature, there are alot of us hybrids in the community: designers with an interest in developing and developers with an interest in designing. I would like to create a place/discussions that dealt with this crossover.

I am speaking from the design pov because, well, i am a designer first and coder/developer second (read: way second). Also, I think that we can close the gap by developing several simple things:

a section where Drupal concepts are explained in a designers vocab

discussions that deal with/ are tagged with information about how to leverage the amazing "theme_" functions

tutorials that discuss how to extract object information and apply it to modules/ hacks. This would include ALOT of PHP insights that developers take for granted

I want to write a list that designers could offer developers, but I don't know what you need (tell me)

Alot of the cool things that we can accomplish with Drupal are left untouched because there is little translation between the to worlds. In my design classes, i communicate OOP concepts in a way that artist can understand them (also, if you want to know how to draw (think pen and paper) i use OOP concepts to communicate that too....) so, it is less about the information and more about how that information is distributed....

if this happens, i think that the gap would grow smaller :)

I am very passionate about Drupal and would love to manage interactions of this sort... here or in any group... an ambassador of design, if you will.

let me know what cha think

Theming handbook for 6

Hello, I'm just posting here to let everyone know that the bulk of the new theming handbook is up. Most of it has been rewritten and reorganized. I hope it is accurate and clear enough to get everyone familiar with the theming system.

<del>It's still missing sections on sub-theming (which can get really fancy BTW). I hope to get a few solid explanations and illustrations on the possibilities.</del> Engineless themes and theme engine sections are not there yet but I don't think it's too critical.

JavaScripting could use some help too. I hope someone can fill that in.

It's late, but it's better now than piling up on the old material in the old theming handbook.

http://drupal.org/node/171179

Zen 5.x-1.0 has been released!

After a month and a half beta period with only 5 bugs discovered (and squashed), the O-fficial Zen 5.x-1.0 version has been released. Yay!

Thanks to everyone who helped with new features, bug fixes and documentation suggestions! The help is greatly appreciated!

For those of you who haven't looked at Zen since its 5.x-0.6 days, take it for a spin. No longer do you need to un-theme the Deliciously Blue style out of Zen before adding your own styles. It’s a true base theme.

And the Zen theme’s support for sub-themes is superior than the standard sub-theme support offered by Drupal 5; Zen sub-themes can have their own template.php and *.tpl.php files (including a page.tpl.php and views theme wizard files.)

What’s New in Zen?

Content-first layout method. You still have the choice of fixed or liquid layouts.

Anything a main theme can do, a Zen sub-theme can do, too. Only better! (No, they can’t. Yes, they can!)

Full on-line documentation. Seriously!

Even more CSS comments. Tons of empty CSS rules with comments describing their usage.

Complete Drupal 5 CSS reference. We’ve made a copy of all of D5 CSS declarations for easy reference, so you don’t have to dig through the core modules to look at their stylesheets.

Even more PHP comments. We’ve added more example theme override functions.

Extra-wide content won’t break your layout in Internet Explorer.

Optional support for Theme Settings API. This API is built-in to Drupal 6 and is available as a contrib module for D5.

602 CVS commits, 31 feature requests, 35 bug fixes.

What’s Next?

Port it to Drupal 6, of course.

And if you’d like your sub-theme included with the next version of Zen 5.x, submit it to the issue queue.
