I am completely lost!

I am a brand-newbie when it comes to drupal. I had someone to help me with my site but that didn't really work out, and now I am in need of someone to help me gain some important knowledge so that I can properly build my site. I really need help with the menus, and with figuring out how the nodes are figured out. Please help. My email is motherprayer@gmail.com.

I do have some knowledge of drupal, but not enough. I'm a pretty quick study, but the tutorials only seem to offer half an explanation. I need a real person to explain this to me. Thanks in advance for your help.

2009 Drupalcon Proposal

The purpose of this page is to gather thoughts on Philadelphia's proposal to the Drupal Association to hold North America's 2009 Drupalcon in Philadelphia. Please feel free to add any ideas or suggestions.

Questions that need to be answered:

What will be the legal entity contracting with vendors, putting down deposits, putting forward their credit history, etc. Presumably the answer is the Drupal Association.

What challenges might a local group face in working the Drupal Association?

Will Acquia put in $ and some other heavy lifting as they did for Drupalcon Boston?

What is the status of piggybacking onto the AIMM conference?

If we don't piggyback onto AIMM, is it realistic to think we can find a venue for 1000+ attendees in Philadelphia on such short notice?

(Shai opinion="

I don't think we should consider it if we are not going to piggyback on AIMM.

The conference organizing budget needs to be significantly bigger than it was for DrupalCon Boston because of their experience that volunteers didn't end up doing as much of the work as they had planned. This is especially true in Phila where we have a smaller Drupal community anyway.

I think the paid conference co-ordinator person should be at a higher level with more authority (and thus paid more) than was the case for DrupalCon Boston and that person should report directly to the Drupal Association conference lead - not to the local committee.

I think the main tasks of the local committee would be to:

Be in charge of planning "fun" non "business" activities for attendees.

Generate volunteers for various "welcoming" capacities at the conference.

Promote the conference in the Philadelphia region in advance of the conference, likely reaching out/prodding the New York Drupal group to engage in significant promotion efforts.

Help the conference professional reach out to local media in order to generate some buzz for the conference.

Generally be in the position to support the paid conference professional, not be the boss of the paid conference professional.

" /)

Client Needed for Drupal Students

I've been teaching Drupal to a few of my friends for several months and they are at a point where they could use a client project to push them forward in real-world Drupaling.

We are looking for a client who needs a pretty standard Drupal setup with no custom coding and minimal custom design (they have been using cck, views, panels, and making image galleries). The ideal client would be a non-profit or individual with a small budget who would be willing to work with students (coached by me) in exchange for the reduced rate. A relaxed person, a flexible timeline, and a Philadelphia resident would all be pluses.

Please let me know if you come across such a client, maybe one that you have to reluctantly turn down yourself. We would be looking for something in the $500-$1000 budget range. Thanks.

Please RSVP now for the Mt Airy Meetup at Canary

Please RSVP now for the Mt Airy Meetup at Canary. It's this Thursday at 7 (details below) so the sooner I know how many are coming the better. I need to make sure to have enough places for everyone to sit and clear out the necessary clutter. I estimate we can comfortably fit 8-10 people in here without moving furniture, so I need to know if there will be more than that.

Please rsvp in the comments.

Thursday May 8, 7:00pm

We're in an upstairs office in the Sedgwick Cultural Center, and our entrance is next to Chef Ken's Restaurant.
There is easy parking in a free lot across the street. Enter it as if you're going to Fit Life Gym. It is a free city lot, so it doesn't belong to the gym and you don't have to worry about tickets or towing.

The easiest train stop is Allen Lane on the R8. Sedgwick on the R7 is also pretty close.

Philly Drupal Meetup : April 17th

Nothing like a little last minute Drupal meetup to keep April interesting! Mason started the discussions around a Mt. Airy meetup, which looks like it's coming together for May. So lets fill the gap with another Old City meetup this week, Thursday the 17th.

Obvious choices are a show-and-tell at IndyHall, or a social at National Mechanics.

Opinions on which people would like to do?

Thanks!
I'd like to host a drupal meetup in Mt Airy (NW Philly)

Anyone interested in getting together to do a show-and-tell group in NW Philly? I've got space at my company's office where we can fit up to around 10 people, and I think it would be really great to have an informal group where we can go over projects, discoveries, techniques, and issues. It's a cool space on a cool block, easily accessible by Septa or car for those not in the area. And once we're done we go across the street for drinks and food.

Possible dates: Apr 22, 23, or 24, or May 6, 7, or 8. I could also have it on a weekend if there's interest.

Location:
Canary Promotion + Design
7135 Germantown Ave, Ph, PA 19119
Module Question

Hi Drupalers.

Not sure if Drupal groups is intended to ask drupal related questions, so feel free to put me in my place if I'm breaking the rules.

Just wondering if anyone is aware of a module that would tell a registered user, and/or redirect them, to the last page they accessed the last time they were logged in?

This is for a client using the book module as an online course, so it's intended for those who don't complete the course in one sitting -- so when they come back next time they will know where they left off.

I'm looking to save the time of writing a module for this.

I know I can use the very nice click2bookmark module, but that would require the user manually marking their place.

If the module doesn't exist, I suppose I can use the statistics module in the core and just do a look up when they login, to find the last page they accessed, but this would only be as good until the access table gets cleared. I guess I might just have to write a module that on cron jobs saves every users last page accessed.

If anyone knows of a module that does this, I appreciate your pointing me the right way.

Thanks,

Sam
Late March/Early April Drupal meetup

Hey,

The next PHP meetup isn't until April 29th - it's going to be an educational event and should be a pretty good one -- the topic is testing, which will become increasingly important to Drupal as well.

But in the meantime we should do a more Drupal-focussed event. In the past there's been requests for more collaborative, educational kinds of meetups. Who's got some ideas?

2-3 people doing Show 'n Tell of sites they've done recently

1-2 people walking through the code of a module they've built

skip the planning and do an "un-meetup" and let a few people lead small-group discussions

Anyone else?

Meetup @ National Mechanics

We're planning another social for the month of March -- returning to National Mechanics for some beers and burgers. First of all, a bunch of people will be returning from Drupalcon Boston and will no doubt have interesting things to say about the state and future of Drupal. Secondly, I'd like to further the planning of an April PHP Meetup educational event on the use of tests in PHP -- unit tests, test driven development, etc. We have two potential speakers at this point, might be looking for one additional. I'd also like to brainstorm ways to bring in more people interested in PHP to the event to benefit as many people as possible.

Hope everyone can make it!

Also, since g.d.o now supports event signups, you can RSVP right here! Cooool. Thanks Moshe.

February Meetup at the Nodding Head

Hey all- so it looks like the majority has spoken and we will be meeting up on Wednesday, February 27th, at 7:00PM. The meetup will be held at Nodding Head Brewery, located at 1516 Sansom St. on the 2nd Floor.

Please feel free to pass this on and hope to see you on Wednesday!

P.S. I tried to add this as an event, but the SPAM filter spit back this error:

The spam filter that is installed on this site is currenly not available. Per the site's policy, we are unable to accept new submissions until that problem is resolved. Please try resubmitting the form in a couple minutes.

Informal Drupal Meetup?

Given that there's no official Drupal meetup this month, is anyone interested in getting together for an informal pre-DrupalCon Drupal meetup? We could just meet for drinks, we could allow people to bring projects they're working on that they need help/advice on, or both/neither. Or, hell, we could just have a Drupal 6 release party.

Anyway, I'm obviously down for a meetup before DrupalCon (I need a drink and am grasping at straws here people!), anyone else?

PHP Security Event

So I wasn't able to muster a Drupal Group event for this month. We were planning a PHP Meetup social, but just found out there's a presentation by the Open Web Application Security Project taking place the same night (Tues Feb 19) at Drexel. The topic is developing and deploying secure PHP apps, so the PHP Meetup kids are going to attend that event. Details are below. All are certainly welcome and I'm sure there will be plenty of info useful to Drupal developers as well. And afterwards we'll head over to Mad Mex for some beer and burritos.

Next month, a number of us are heading to Boston for Drupalcon '08. I thought for a local event towards the end of March we could have some of the folks who went talk about what they learned and what they saw that was cool -- really, just a big roundtable discussion kicked off by some of the sessions and lessons from Drupalcon. Still working on a date and location for that.

Anyway I hope to see some of you at the event on Tuesday the 19th, and I know I'll see some of you in Boston!

Nate.

- - Philadelphia OWASP Patten Auditorium Drexel University -

Come join us in Philadelphia as we discuss web application security
and determine the content for upcoming meetings this year! We are
looking forward to a good year in web application security. At this
meeting we'll discuss what's happening in web application security,
plan our upcoming meetings, and then discuss secure PHP development
and a fun way to spam your printer using JavaScript.

Please RSVP to darian@criticode.com if you plan on attending.

- - - HOW-TO: Secure PHP Deployment Patterns -

Philadelphia-area application security consultant and Philly OWASP
Chapter Leader Darian Anthony Patrick will present secure PHP
deployment patterns in shared hosting and application-dedicated
deployment environments.

PHP has become one of the most frequently noted development platforms
of vulnerable web applications. This talk will describe best
practices for separation of PHP applications to minimize effect of a
successful penetration, and the hardening and isolation of PHP itself
to mitigate the effect of successful exploitation of problems in the
language implementation.

- - - HACK: Cross Site Printing -

Philadelphia-area security researcher and Philly OWASP Chapter Leader
Aaron Weaver will be discussing Cross Site Printing, a notable
variation on intranet application exploitation.

Aaron's research has well received by the web security industry, with
coverage by Robert Hansen aka RSnake of SecTheory and ha.ckers.org,
Jeremiah Grossman of White Hat Security and has been named number 4
of the Top Ten Web Hacks of 2007 in informal polling conducted by
Jeremiah, and is noted as one of the Coolest Hacks of 2007 by Dark
Drupal Developer Extraordinare | Rock River Star

We are Rock River Star, a web development agency located in Chester County, PA. We run a small, tight shop of 6 developers and have a number of Drupal projects (as well as traditional PHP/MySQL projects) underway all the time.

We're always on the lookout for great new talent. If you love Drupal and would love to work with some great developers, drop me a note. We all work from home but find frequent opportunities to get out and work face to face with each other. We're heavily involved in the local networking groups, attending and presenting at PANMA, the PHP Meetup, and the Drupal Group.

Our preference is for full-time employees but we'll also consider contractors and part-timers. Likewise our preference is for people who live within an hour of Philadelphia -- even though you'll work from home, we find it valuable to get together from time to time.

Want to learn a lot, code a lot, and work with great people on great projects you can be proud of? Contact us today and we'll talk!

Open Source Frameworks Presentation : Oct 25

Join us on October 25th for an introduction to Open Source web application frameworks. A framework is a reusable software design which improves the development process by letting a programmer focus on the business-specific tasks of a project rather than repetitive, common tasks like database access, templating, and session management. We'll learn more about web application frameworks in general and explore a number of today's most popular ones.

This event is a co-production of

The Philly PHP Meetup

The Philly Drupal Group

PANMA - The Philadelphia Area New Media Association

Details: Thursday, October 25th, 2007 at 6:30PM.
The Science Center
3701 Market Street, Second Floor
Philadelphia, PA 19108
Map/Directions

Attendance is free but please RSVP at http://www.panma.org/registration.html

You'll learn about the strengths and weaknesses, the joys and sorrows of working with four leading open source PHP application frameworks, presented by local developers and members of the group:

CodeIgniter - Owen Winkler, Rock River Star

Symfony - Alex Gilbert - P'unk Avenue

Zend Framework - Chris Morrell

CakePHP - Joshua Benner

For comparison, we'll also present:

Ruby on Rails - Randy Schmidt. Ruby on Rails is a one of the most popular MVC frameworks today. Is it worth you learning another programming language (Ruby) in order to take advantage of Rails?

Drupal - Dave Burns & Jerad Bitner. Drupal is a PHP/MySQL based content management system, which offers much more functionality out of the box than a framework but comes with tradeoffs in flexibility and performance. Learn about the tradeoffs made when choosing between a CMS and a framework.

This should be a great event, relevant to people of all levels of experience with PHP and even other open source languages and systems. Attendance is free but please RSVP at http://www.panma.org/registration.html

I am theming input form -

used the hanbook to get to the point where created and invoked node_form.tpl.php.

used css to theme form- widths and layout

problem:

The input field extends past my width and breaks the layout. In other words the html output is indicating
<textarea class="foo" input="60" etc....
input="60" is the part where i believe i need to change but can 't figure out how...I have used overflow as a hack, but looking for a better solution....if anybody can point me in the right direction or give advice--i would greatly appreciate it.
Jamie

I'm looking forward to attending my first Drupal meet-up, couldn't make it last month but I really want to attend the next one. Is there a date/place set for August for the Philadelphia area group?

Thanks,

Inspiration at the Meet Up

I just announced that the Embedded Media Field now supports custom media url's, but I forgot to mention that the idea for that support came from the meet-up last week, specifically in a conversation with jkopel & Jen Simmons. At least one other (whose username I can't find here), and probably others; sorry if I forgot to mention you. I met a lot of cool new people here.

Personally, I'd like to see future meet-ups have (a) internet service available, (b) more of a Drupal focus, since from my informal poll over half the present folks used Drupal, and (c) an ad-hoc schedule, with a social planned afterwards. But it was still cool to meet the local folks. Wanted to meet a few more of you, but things got late, since I have a long drive to Philly. Look forward to future meet-ups!

Venues for hosting events

Let's keep a page of places we might be able to hold events:

Educational/Presentation events

This was just a thought I had... our Campus in Langhorne [www.pbu.edu] is about a block or so from the Langhorne Septa station. We have classrooms, conference rooms, lecture halls, a wireless network... (Joshua Benner )

Moved to Harrisburg

I've just moved to Harrisburg, PA. I work as a developer with Advomatic. Recent projects of mine: Views Slideshow, Embedded Media Field, Drupal FTP, and RPG. Some of my personal sites are Drupal RGP, Drupal Hub (demo for Embedded Media Field and Views Slideshow), and Spindowners (an upcoming web-based rpg).

I look forward to being active in this group -- I just moved here last week, so I probably can't come to the meetup on Tuesday, but I will definitely make sure to be present when I can.

Fellow member of our group is moving to NYC and has already found a great Drupal event happening.

It's a two day FREE Drupal Session, and I think there might be some consumption of drinks before, during, or after.

Here's the details
http://barcamp.org/DrupalCampNYC3

I hope a few of us Philly guys will be going up to establish the City of Brotherly Love as Drupal savvy.

October 25: Open Source Frameworks Presentation

PHP/Drupal Meetup June 19

We're back at Gullifty's next week for another summer outdoor PHP/Drupal meetup. Last time was another nice mix of folks -- with some heroically driving from New Jersey; once again, nobody taking advantage of the nearby transit stop :)

Anyway, the menu once again is all things Drupal, PHP, Open Source, and whatever else is on your mind.

We'll also be discussing and planning our first educational/presentation style event in the fall. I already have one <del>victim</del> volunteer willing to present. We'll be looking for more, and also discussing a location, timeframe, and ways to <del>dragging</del> inviting more people.

Please RSVP at http://php.meetup.com/353/ to let us know to look for you!

Found a place for the May Drupal Group / PHP Meetup Mashup. Gullifty's in Bryn Mawr -- they have a pretty big outdoor bar area, and assuming the weather holds, it should be a really nice time.

Philadelphia Area Drupal/PHP Meetup Mashup

Well, the April PHP meetup drew a nice crowd of 8 people. We were seated at 2 tables of 4 each, and our table basically talked Drupal all night! So it's clear there's some overlap and I'd like to play that up. I'd also like to try to correct the problem of being stuck in one position all night, not being able to mix up conversation. So, I'd like to try to get the PHP Meetup crowd and the Drupal Group crowd together for an evening.

When: Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at 7:00 PM

RSVP: http://php.meetup.com/353/calendar/5681296/

Where: Gullifty's
1149 Lancaster Ave
Bryn Mawr, PA 19010
(610) 525-1851

If the changes affect your plans to attend, please take a moment to update your RSVP. (You can RSVP 'No' or 'Maybe' as well as 'Yes'.)

You can always get in touch with me through the 'Contact Organizer' feature on the Meetup.com website: http://php.meetup.com/353/suggestion/

I don't mean to co-opt this group or anything, but given the overlap - both in subject and in individuals, I think occasional pooling of resources makes sense.

If you prefer not to join that site, please feel free to RSVP directly here or by emailing me. Also, any comments/suggestions on this event are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Nate

PHP Meetup Great American Pub Wayne

Hi all,

Sorry for the late notice but wanted to say the PHP Meetup group is getting together tomorrow, April 17th, 7pm at the Great American Pub in Wayne, which is steps from the Wayne R5 SEPTA stop, for city folk.

More info: http://php.meetup.com/353/

There's been some Drupal interest there in the past, and it's always good to learn from others doing similar things. Join the group and RSVP if you can make it!

Thanks,
Nate

April Philly Area Drupal Meetup Notes...Sorry meant to write this earlier

The drupal philadelphia area meeting for April fell a part like an ikea made armoire being moved from one room to the next.... i now have experience in both:)

Thank you to fstpierre. The Science Leadership Center on 22nd & north broad is a great resource to have if needed for something in the future.

The meeting consisted of just me an fstpierre speaking about some of our personal uses, skills that we developed, and things that we potentially would like to get done... Specifically one question that seemed to develop ... is it better to learn to access drupal /adminster changes from the command line or (terminal) vs a texteditor....

I walked away from this meeting with one major question on drupal meetups....

1-are they worthwhile, being that a lot of the info, support and group involvement can be done online with drupal.org and groups like Drupal Dojo?

I believe they could be...it seems to me they would be a great filtering tool of all of the information that can be absorbed in the community....also for me i genuinely like to meet up face to face every once in a while - it facilitates problem solving and it is always good to network...may be we could take a more relaxed format, like beers or coffee

My last thought is that we can can take an approach to use the philly area groups site to be an added support to ourselves..for instance we could set as a goal to maintain a higher degree of importance to participate in postings in drupal philly area- than the main drupal.org postings (not meant to diminish participating in drupal as a whole)

A article ()

D article ()

C article ()

E article ()

why is it printing out '()'
Hello Drupaldelphians! Drupal Group Meeting One Week Away.

Everybody ready to get together next week? Quixotic life started a wiki for an agenda and such...so check that out. --- lets try to get some activity on the wiki - the more activity the more we can clarify what we want to do...

incidentally my vote is to have a meeting talking only about JOOMLA....kidding:)

looking forward to the meetup

jamie (henns20)

Drupal Dojo Lesson #1 screencast

This is a request from Hens20 (sorry for taking so long man!!) that I think others would find interesting if they already do not know about it. There was a site that had the .swf of the whole screencast for lesson #1 but drupaldojo.com has the entire screencast for you to download. Here is the link to the page:

http://www.drupaldojo.com/lessons?page=2

Scroll all the way to the bottom for the link to lesson #1.
