Drupal in Libraries -- from the ALA

Just saw this publication from the ALA:

http://www.techsource.ala.org/ltr/drupal-in-libraries.html

I have yet to read it, but will pick up a copy soon -- the sample of the text gives a decent idea of what the book is about.

Cheers,

Bill

Content Organization ?

Hi everyone, Please help!

I'm just getting started entering content into my first Drupal 6 site and I am struggling with how to keep all the content organized and reusable. I already have what I think are too many content types. Seems like the content types should be generalized and less descriptive so I can reuse them whenever I want. What is the best way to keep Content Types simple/easy-to-use while maintaining reusability?

BTW, I'm using Views to create custom queries for page display.

Hey,

I'm a computer programming student working at a local library for the summer. I was asked to build an intranet website using Drupal, and I've hit a bit of a snag when it comes to the authentication.

They've asked me to set up a Single Sign-On system, wherein employees that log into their staff stations are automatically logged in to the staff intranet website. I've learned from the IT workers (the library outsources their IT to another company) that the authentication is done using a Domain Controller. The server runs on Apache, not sure of the OS at this point. (I think it might be linux...) We're on Drupal 5.7.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing? What steps did you take?

Is there a tutorial for setting up an index?

Hi there,

I'm not a librarian.

But I think that a library type of site is pretty close to what I'm after.

I subscribe to a magasine that has session plans in it and I'm investigating setting up a searchable index of those resource online.

Basicaly I want to store, for each session plan:: Year, Month, Page, Session Title, Session Type, Author, then half a dozen or so keywords.

So that a user can search for: "I want a film based session that deals with violence" or "a music based session that looks at identity" etc. - and the website will return the Year, Month and Title and page number of a session plan.

Does anyone know of a tutorial for setting up this kind of a website using Drupal?

Cheers

David

For my fellow NOOBS, here's a quick (~9 mins) introduction to the Views modules in Drupal 6. I found a lot of value in this so I thought I'd share.

Corporate Library Catalog Proposal based on Drupal

Hi all,

I'm looking at re-vamping our library catalog and going with something more social and lighter-weight. We are a small corporate library in the biotech space. I've put together some thoughts on what I'd like to see and would appreciate your criticism. I've been researching the catalog workflow (user and admin), but I could easily have missed something along the way. I'm also not a Drupal guru yet - though I am a big fan and have created several websites with it. Any comments or suggestions regarding the ideas in the blog article would be greatly appreciated.

Corporate Library Catalog Design Proposal

We are currently using Drupal for our library website and an RSS item database (for non-RSS enabled alert sources). I've also prototyped a multi-user blog and an internal news service.

Drupal4Lib BoF (ALA Anaheim)

Okay, we'll be meeting for our Drupal4lib BoF on Sun. (6/29, 3:30p-5:00p) -- in the LITA Bloggers Room (till they chase us out).

This will be an informal get-together of people to talk about how they've implemented Drupal or how they'd like to implement Drupal. Whether you're a newbie or pro is fine. Everyone is welcome. I'll see if I can dig up a projector so people can do brief presentations of their projects.

Please leave comments and suggestions.

Investigating event management for a biggish public library

We're a 33-branch public library in Ottawa gradually getting up to speed on Drupal. (Extremely early sandbox stage, let's say.) We have a pressing, and as yet unmet, need for handling event registrations at all of those branches. Our requirements include, among other things, allowing signups for a recurring class with multiple dates (i.e. one registration for all sessions), adding a waiting list, being able to globally start all registrations on a specific date, and being able to cancel a session and send an email to all participants. From looking at the Event Manager and Signup modules (are there others?), we would need to undertake, or commission, a wholesale rewrite of those modules to get what we need.

Event management is an important item for many libraries. Has anyone implemented event management specifically for libraries in Drupal using one of these modules or another? Is anyone out there thinking along a similar line? Can you share the requirements you've met with code, or that you have and, like us, haven't met yet?

Many thanks,

Time & Place of Drupal4Lib BoF?

A couple of people have written me about the Drupal4Lib BoF at ALA Anaheim.

Basically the idea is for people to get together informally to talk about how they've implemented Drupal or (equally as important) how they would like to implement Drupal.

People could talk briefly about projects they've been involved with, etc. The model is kind of like a 'Meetup'. I figure an hour and a half get-together would be fine.

Now to the tricky bit: Time & Place?

What are the biggest conflicts? For me that would be the Lita Happy Hour (Fri. 6/27, 5.30-8p) and the Opening General Session (Sat. 6/28 5:30p-7:30p).

I'm sure other people have other conflicts. The idea would be to meet maybe before any of these -- or on Sunday.

I really don't have a handle on the conference program yet so your comments and suggestions are appreciated. Please leave them here!

Do you have any tips for small colleges using Drupal?

Hi,

I am responsible for technology implementation at a small post-secondary school in British Columbia. I think that Drupal would be a good fit, not only for the library but perhaps for other areas as well. My interests include public website CMS, intranets, and distance learning. Our focus is to make the sites useful and practical for staff, students, instructors, and prospective students.

Our school's site is: http://capernwray.ca/

BoF on Drupal4Lib at ALA in Anaheim?

Maybe a BoF (Birds of a Feather) session or something similarly casual (and fun).

It'd be great to get together.

Submit your ideas today!

Drupal in Education BoF

I just submitted a proposal for a Drupal in Education Birds of a Feather session.

If you are attending the DrupalCon, come on over and read through the proposals, rate the existing proposals, and/or write one of your own.

If you would like to attend the BoF, I have started a list of possible topics to cover in the session description. As I say in the description, given Drupal's flexibility and the differing needs of people working within education, there will be plenty to talk about.

If, however, there is something you want to talk about/ask about, include it in the comments here, or voice your opinion over at the poll.

Final decisions on which sessions will run will be forthcoming in February.

Cheers,

Bill

Drupal Partners with U of M Libraries - Formal Lab Usability Testing of D6

FYI: http://drupal.org/node/204667

We're not specifically testing a "library installation," but this represents a first step towards establishing a long-term and mutually beneficial relationship with the Drupal community. With a number of core developers, including Dries, in town, we'll also have a chance to run a few ideas by them regarding a couple of the Drupal-powered scholarly communities that we have begun to construct.

¡Viva la Revolucion!

A Modest Suggestion : LibrarySandbox.org

I got an interesting request a little while ago. A librarian wanted to know if she could get administrative access to a website I was running so she could see how Drupal works.

Naturally I had to say no, but it got me thinking that a "sandbox" version of Drupal -- based on a library website -- might be useful to people who wanted an idea of the "look and feel" of the thing.

Drupal has a module called "Demo" that makes sandboxes possible. So now I'm thinking this might form the basis of an interesting collaborative project.

The goal would be to create a model library website (representing a fictitious institution) that people would have administrative access to.

The website would have events, a list of resources, plus all the other accouterments a modern day fictitious institution would have.

If you'd like to help out or have any advice, feel free to leave a comment here. Or just email me.

I've already registered the domain, LibrarySandbox.org, though there's not much up there at the moment,

Library Websites powered by Drupal

Library homepages powered by Drupal

These are examples of live webpages that Libraries have put together to give service to library users: as homepages, catalogs, or others. Please add yours!

Library name (please link to live homepage)

Description

In service since (mo-yr):

Modules in use / Integration with other library systems

Contact email

Monterrey Tech Library

Homepage for Library serving 18,000+ students in Monterrey, Mexico. Focuses on listing all services, listing recommended books and videos along with relevant news. Serves as gateway to the library OPAC, which runs under Innovative Millennium.

sep-2007

Modules: nice_menus, tinymce + img_assist, polls. Integration: We run a homebrew generic database (a'la dabbleDB) so requests for support, suggestions, petitions for library instruction, etc. head to the database instead of to an email address.

The idea is to have a forum to exchange ideas and advice, share experiences, and maybe even collaborate on a couple of projects that highlight the use of Drupal in a library context.

The ever helpful Cary Gordon has kindly agreed to serve as "moderator" along with your's truly.

SUBSCRIBE

Send the command 'SUBSCRIBE DRUPAL4LIB First_name Last_name' in the body of an email to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UIC.EDU.

Leo Klein on Drupal (Chicago)

Okay, this one is so far off it's almost crazy to talk about, but since they just posted it, I thought I might as well put out the word -- at least for people in the Chicagoland area interested in Drupal.

Drupal of course is a popular open-source content management system. I'll be giving an introduction to it at the offices of the Metropolitan Library System in Chicago on Friday, 2/29, 1:30-4:30. (Yes, leap year day!)

I'll first go over the basics of the system -- the good, the bad, and the buggy -- in the context of open source software. Then, I'll discuss how certain features of Drupal can be used to solve typical library content needs.

You don't have to be an expert to attend this thing -- just someone interested in how modern content management systems work.

For more info and to register: http://tinyurl.com/2hwua3

Hope to see you,

LEO

DrupalEd 5.2-1

Get release 5.2-1 here.

From the upgrade notes included in the release:

This upgrade is in response to the CCK security announcement.

While this security upgrade only affects a specific use of CCK that is not present in the DrupalEd configuration, anyone running DrupalEd is strongly advised to upgrade. A healthy dose of paranoia regarding security concerns can save you hours of time/emotional distress.

Code updates:

CCK

Audio

Update Status

JavaScript Tools

Views Bonus Pack

With the exception of CCK, none of these updates are related to security issues, but they bring the codebase up to date.

With the Views Bonus Pack, we upgraded to the dev version released August 11th to include the ability to export views in either CSV or DOC format.

To upgrade an existing 5.2 install, or to install a new site using DrupalEd, you can download the full codebase here.

DrupalEd install profiles

The DrupalEd project is now live on Drupal.org -- we are now ready to use the issue queue to centralize discussion on the different install profiles. In starting to discuss the profiles, I suggest we use the following format, as we will need to answer these questions as we build the various profiles.

Site Description: the functionality/use case for the site (and we have started on the descriptions in the various site descriptions in this wiki page).

Roles: the various user roles, and brief explanations of how they will function if this is not self explanatory

Content Types: the different content types in use on the site, and the roles that will be able to access them

Install Process: the install profile will lay out different options -- what do we want the options to be? We can also use the steps of the install profile to deliver training/documentation on how to use the site. While I don't want to get overly laborious with this section, this is also a possibility to document how the site works, and relay that info to the end user

Module List: What core modules will be turned on, and what contrib modules will be added?

For future iterations of these profiles, I think we should make some options within the profile for block and menu variations, but for the first pass I suggest we set up some sensible defaults.

So, let's create some profiles and make this happen.

1. School Portal

A place for a public-facing web presence for a school. This will be the most simple profile and will look like a very generic Drupal installation with content types "story" and "page" and a couple of default pages and settings: "Welcome", "About us", "Contact".

2. Academic Department

A site that provides an overview of an academic department in higher education. This looks a lot like the School portal but will have more default pages, including for instance the different faculties and educations, and some default "views" to list them all.

3. One teacher, one or multiple classes

One teacher providing all information to the different classes. This is a very simple version since the roles are easy to distribute: there's one "moderator" namely the teacher and all other users have the "student" role in succession to their class role. Using taxonomy_access each piece of content will have it's own tag/class that only those students can see, next to a "protected" tag so that any student can see the content and a "public" tag for anyone (not logged in) to see. A group can be created per class, as well as a "student group" for the pupils to gather and discuss. A forum should probably be set up with some default categories.

4. Social Learning Space

A site where teachers can manage blog-based classes, teachers and students can create working groups, with support for multiple content types broken out by role -- the current DrupalEd install is a middle ground for this type of profile. This is the largest set-up and will need a great deal of consideration about the whats and hows.

5. Research Space

A site that supports modules and plugins that collect and analyze data, and publish the results. This could include elements such as polls, quizzes and views of web stats, and possibly support integration with research tools such as libsna, and reporting & visualization tools such as pentaho? A note to consider: since those products are open-source but not GPL, we will not be able to include them with the distrubtion, forcing users to download and install them manually. This should clearly be advertised on installation.

Next steps

Over the next few days, I'll create a project on d.o for DrupalEd -- I'll post here when it's live, and then we'll have a central place to discuss and manage version control of different profiles. ~billfitzgerald

Comments and thanks

Thanks Bill. The project space will definitely help with this endeavor. Not sure what happened with the Organic Groups Drupal Ed thing. That looked cool. In looking at my school district, I think they would be better off offering teachers their own space for each teacher to create their own groups - one group per class. I've got that setup pretty easily but haven't figured out the grading and tracking homework part. As student login, they can view their grades and homework assignments. In the meantime, each class (which is an organic group) would be it's own portal or blog. That way the student has a list of classes (portal/blog) that he/she can go to in order to discuss assignments or get help. That is how my on-line schooling is setup at Western Governor's University and it is pretty effective (other than using a mangled Oracle portal product). ~harriska2

I removed the "One teacher, one class" since this is just a simple form of the "many classes", no special options are needed. I sorted them in order of simplicity ASC. I'm very happy with these categories: they are easy to understand and very flexible. Good work Bill! ~wmostrey

DrupalEd Rocks! Thanks to all involved. I added research #5 above. ~ethang

All of these are wonderful ideas, and I can think of several ways to use each profile type. Everyone working on this project is amazing and I am grateful for the work Bill and others put in. When it comes to my primary needs, the public-facing portal, I don't think we should be quick to assume too much simplicity.

I'm currently working on replacing the public-facing site for a small college and need a lot more than is detailed here. Many smaller schools (2000 and fewer students) have a unified site rather than seperate departmental sites, so I want to be able to do hierarchical pages with lots of different content elements. Also, moderation is a big deal since 30 people from around campus (many of whom managed to get Ph.D.s without learning to punctuate) update content regularly, so we need workflow and moderation that's flexible to some extent but, most importantly, just works. Also, a well thought out personnel directory is incredibly important for the public. Our particular plan calls for the personnel directory to link to a bio page the employees can update themselves and also allow them each to maintain their own blogs. Likewise, we plan on having each standing committee and student club have their own group with both public and private content including calendars that get aggregated into one comprehensive campus calendar and event list.

In other words, in order to make the site truly useful and appealling to both internal and external audiences, we need more than simple "about" pages on the public-facing portal.

I'm not saying the group has to scratch my itch, especially since I'm a writer/editor/PR person with a Web site in my charge rather than a real developer who can contribute much besides ideas. But, I have a feeling a lot of organizations, whether academic, non-profit or mid-sized business, would find an install profile that does what I've detailed incredibly appealing. ~Scott (sacushman)

DrupalEd Now Available

DrupalEd is now available for download --

The full announcement is available here --

In distributing this version, we opted to distribute the site as a tarball with all relevant code and third-party libraries. Down the road, we'd like to figure out a way around this, but given that both TinyMCE and the audio module require LGPL'd libraries that can't be hosted on d.o, AND that many people in education are working through software issues without a great deal of tech support, we figured a tarball with all the necessary code would lower the barrier to entry sigificantly.

However, we would like to move away from this in the medium to long term -- we'd love to hear some ideas on ways around this --

This version bundles some useful functionality, it is by no means done -- the biggest priority short term is to build out an install profile, but we'll be writing up some more comprehensive notes over the next week.

So, enjoy the site!

Cheers,

Bill
