Library BoF at DrupalCamp Colorado

I just wanted to quickly recap the Library BoF that took place at DrupalCamp Colorado this past weekend. There were about 10 people interested in libraries and Drupal attending, spanning a variety of disciplines, including public, academic, and special libraries, vendors, and consultants.

Discussion centered around the following:

Best modules for libraries. The idea of developing a best practice for libraries (by type) was discussed. Inevitably it seems that a general list of modules and practices for libraries will naturally occur in the community, especially as developers document their implementation process.

Input filters. There was some discussion comparing TinyMCE and Markdown modules. Markdown was mentioned as a simple way for users to enter information without using html. The language is similar but not the same as Mediawiki and has the advantage of being a pretty non-invasive way to format content.

Staff training. Everyone agreed that training in general is a large part of Drupal implementation, particularly regarding entering content and using the input filters. Workflow module was recommended to control content entry by allowing new content to go to a proofread/formatting state before publishing.

Book carousels. Several people shared their methods of implementing book carousels into library websites, including jCarousel Lite, a Bookteller widget, and Views Carousel/CCK, which can also use RSS Feeds.

Future Library BoFs. The group would like to meet on a semi-regular basis in Denver and would like to encourage all interested parties to attend. Everyone was encouraged to join the Libraries Drupal Group to plan this.

Library RFP examples for consultants

My library is getting ready to migrate to Drupal shortly and I am interested to see examples of RFP's that other libraries have used to hire their consultants. I don't know that it would be appropriate to post them to this site, so please send examples directly to me.

If there is interest, I would be glad to post and/or forward them.

Drupal4Lib BoF at ALA Chicago?

Just a request for ideas and suggestions for a Drupal4Lib BoF at ALA in Chicago. Time is marching on!

Last year in Anaheim, we had a fine get-together. A number of people presented projects they were working on and we had a general discussion on implementing Drupal in a library environment.

Here's my write-up: http://chicagolibrarian.com/node/289

ALA CHICAGO

This year we're in Chicago (my home town!) so I'm really looking forward to repeating the event here.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, if you'd like to present something or if there's a theme or topic you’d like to investigate, please leave a comment

TIME & PLACE?

I had a look at the conference program and time-wise, it looks like the the most conflict-free time-slots (yes, I know, famous last words) are: Sat. 3:30pm-5:00pm; Sun. 1:30-3:00; Sun. 3:30p-5:00pm.

If there are no obviously conflicts, I'll put these up in a poll so people can vote on their favorite time-slot.

We'll also have to find a location. I can bring a laptop and projector so basically any place with juice will do.

IDEAS & SUGGESTIONS

I imagine this to be a relatively informal, fun and rewarding get-together. It'll be great to get together.

Tell me what you think!

Denver Library Birds of a Feather Gathering in Denver on May 14th

There's a growing number of libraries and library-like organizations using Drupal to manage various parts of their systems in Colorado. Having Amy Qualls-McClure come to Denver gives us an incentive to get folks together.

Location

Denver Open Media at 7th and Kalamath in Denver (this is where the monthly Denver Drupal User's Group meetings happen). Google maps can help you figure out bus or light rail options, or parking is available in a lot across the street.

Tentative agenda:

Noon to 1: optional lunch meetup at El Noa Noa.

1:00 to 2:00: Welcome, Introductions, Presentation of sites (if they are public)

2:00 until 5:00: TBD (discussions and presentations about Library Modules, Views, CCK, whatever else interests you)

5:00 until whenever - optional evening activities

About discussions/presentations

I'm sure we'll have plenty to talk about during this time, but we are likely to have better discussions if people leave comments here detailing:

What you'd like to learn

What you're able and willing to present about

I think some demonstrations of existing sites will also be quite valuable, so be ready to show off your Drupal Library site. Even if it isn't finished there is enormous value for presenter and audience in seeing a partially finished site.

Current status: Planning.

Description

Biblio is a Drupal module that allows users to manage and display lists of scholarly publications. It is currently used on approximately a 1000 installations (and raising). Its use in projects like The Science Collaboration Framework, however is bound to increase its use even more.

Currently the module is still using custom nodes with its own database tables instead of CCK nodes/fields. Because of this it has to implement and maintain it's own widgets, integration with CCK reduce redundancy in the Drupal contrib codebase. Lately several features from Biblio have been reimplemented in the CCK framework. Also several glue-modules emerged that seek to incorporate functionality that already works for CCK

Resources
* Biblio issue: Conversion to CCK data model
* Wiki: Roadmap for making Biblio use CCK nodes

Project schedule
* Convert fields into a cck (Share the exported fields with the community for verification, Integrate it with the module, share the code)
* Implement field visibility setting
* Create the views and search functions (need ideas)
* Make the update path (need example database dumps from the community)
* Port the import/export functionality
* Make new example views

module with multiple dates

I have been trying to shoehorn a specific form into drupal using cck and views, then date api with cck and views, and it just ain't working. :) What I am trying to do is track when issues of a magazine arrive. So I want fields for title and issue, and fields that can be filled in when the magazine arrives. I could do this with MySQL and PHP, but in this particular situation end user access would be easier if I could put it on a drupal site. Does anyone know of a module that might fill the bill?

Thanks,
Carol

Basic Libraries Distros

Since implementing Drupal on our library website, I've spoken to a number of library Drupal programmers and seen many implementations of Drupal for library websites. Many of the implementations do the same things as one another but in different ways, which can cause module clashes and frustration for new Drupal users trying to maintain newly-transformed library websites. While all of these sites have needs unique to them, they also all have some basic needs in common that are unique to library sites. At DrupalCon DC, a discussion came up which, per Cary's helpful direction, I'm bringing in here to hear thoughts/opinions, ideas: What about creating a Libraries Distro of Drupal? Similar to the D5 DrupalEd but for libraries. This would basically be, as Cary put it, "a base set of modules that almost every library big and small will need." Some obvious needs that could be addressed include things like calendaring, wikis, a way to display new materials, etc. Cary also mentioned setting up a best practices base install profile with roles and content types.

Chicagoland Drupal4Lib BoF (3/20) - Report

We had a wonderful turnout of close to 20 librarians from all parts of the Chicagoland area. Knowledge and skill-level ran from seasoned veterans to people being introduced to Drupal for the first time.

[read more after the jump...]

Project Demos & Participation

We had a number of people show us projects they're working on, including Mikael Jacobsen of Skokie Public, Brian Smith from PALS and Colin Koteles from the College of DuPage. We also had healthy contingents from Loyola, Oak Park Public, [the 3 people sitting next to Mikael?], and the ALA.

Module & Technique Discussion

Questions or issues that came up included transferring a Wiki to Drupal, customizing Themes (in this case the Zen Theme), use of Panels and a short (and conflicted) demo on my part of CiviCRM.

Resources

I was happy to see that at least two other people had read or were reading the O'Reilly Drupal Book. We agreed that it was very good. I added that it was very hands-on and that you really wanted to have a working copy of the CMS in front of you as you went through the chapters.

Other resources that people recommended included, Learn by the Drop, some of the instructional material from UMich, and this interesting site bitnami.org where you can download all the apps you need (Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc.) to get Drupal up and running locally.

ALA in July

We also discussed plans for ALA in July. We'll be meeting as part of the LITA Drupal4Lib IG meeting. People expressed an interest in hearing from a speaker who could discuss where Drupal is heading in the near future -- with the next release. Happily, we have a number of excellent Drupal Developers in the Chicagoland area who could talk on this subject.

Most Embarrassing Moment

In an attempt to show beginners how easy it is to set up Drupal using cPanel/Fantastico (just to play around and experiment with), I completely flubbed up, ending with one error after the other. So yes, I will be leaving town and changing my identity. (Here's how it should have gone...).

Thanks to All

First thanks to the wonderful people at DePaul for letting us use their great Instruction Room.

Then thanks of course to everyone who came! I was so wonderfully surprised by the number and variety of people who came. It really energized me as to ideas and activities we can do for using Drupal for library purposes in the Chicagoland area.

Feel free to leave comments and hope to see everyone again!

Next Meeting(s)

We'll be getting together as part of the LITA Drupal4Lib IG meeting either on the Saturday (7/11) or Sunday (7/12), depending on conflicts, room availability etc. We then have a scheduled meeting in September at the downtown office of the MLS on September 25.

Note: Mikael Jacobsen is also organizing meetings for NSLS.

Round-robin of projects people are working on or would like to be working on.

Book or Resource of the Month

Has anyone come across a new book or website on Drupal that was helpful? This is inspired by my reading of the new O'Reilly book 'Using Drupal'.

Module of the Month

Overview of Civicrm (Leo)
Civicrm is a customer relations manager that's popular in the non-profit world. As you might suspect, it's good for managing customer (read 'patron') information with well developed modules for events (paid or unpaid), fundraising, volunteering and mass mailing. http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/

Workflow/Triggers/Actions (?)

Organic Groups (?)

LITA Drupal4Lib IG Get-together at ALA Convention (Sat. 7/11)

ALA Convention in Chicago in July, we'll have an opportunity to think about what we might want to do for that.

Dream Speaker(s)?

LITA Drupal4Lib IG

Chicagoland Drupal4Lib BoF - Quarterly Basis

We'll be doing one of these on a quarterly basis -- or at least that's the intention. The people at DePaul have kindly made their location available for March; We'll be meeting at McCormick Place as part of ALA in July; After that we'll be meeting at the downtown offices of the Metropolitan Library System (MLS) 9/25.

EZProxy, Drupal Auth and SOPAC 2

Most probably already have a module local as this is so easy but here is a snippet people can work off of. The code below doesn't do much error checking or anything. You'd likely want to edit the below to make it more robust. The one below checks a SOPAC 2 table to make sure that they have a verified library card associated with the account. This prevents normal drupal accounts that don't have a library card from accessing resources. If you use some other module to add cards to profiles you would want to use that field instead. You may also want to use SSL though I haven't checked how well EZProxy handles it for external script auth. This presumes your using normal drupal accounts and not things like LDAP, etc.

For ezproxy you would use something like this for your auth:

::external=http://yourdrupallib.org/ezproxyauth,post=ezuser=^u&ezpass=^p,valid=+OK

Feel free to edit the below to make it better.

<?php
function ezproxy_menu() {

Service Providers For Libraries

There are many Drupal consulting and service provider companies who provide services that are useful for libraries or who have domain specific knowledge which makes them valuable to libraries. This wiki is meant to provide an overview of some of those companies. If you should be listed here, edit away.

These are sorted by alphabetical order.

Acquia

Chicagoland Drupal4Lib BoF

I'm pleased to announce a Chicagoland Drupal4Lib BoF on Friday, 3/20 (1:30p-4p) at DePaul's Loop Campus, 1 E. Jackson (10th fl., Rm# 10028), Chicago.

GOALS OF THE CHICAGOLAND DRUPAL4LIB BoF

The Chicagoland Drupal4Lib BoF will be an opportunity for librarians to get together and discuss how they use (or would like to use) Drupal in a library context. We'll ask people to present projects they're working on and we'll field questions on problems and approaches to implementing Drupal. All levels of knowledge from expert to n00b are welcome.

Also, since we're the 'host' city for the ALA Convention in Chicago in July, we'll have an opportunity to think about what we might want to do for that.

This Chicagoland Drupal4Lib BoF is a follow-up to our successful get-togethers last year at the Metropolitan Librarian System and at the wildly sold-out Chicago Drupal BarCamp in October.

CHICAGOLAND DRUPAL4LIB BoF - QUARTERLY BASIS

We'll be doing one of these on a quarterly basis -- or at least that's the intention. The people at DePaul have kindly made their location available for March; We'll be meeting at McCormick Place as part of ALA in July; After that we'll be meeting at the downtown offices of the Metropolitan Library System (MLS).

PARTICIPATION AND SUGGESTIONS

It goes without saying that your participation and suggestions are welcome. The format is free and open enough to accommodate a ton of different ideas and needs.

Feel free to sign up below and either leave a comment or email me. And everyone start planning for an informative and rewarding event -- on 3/20!

Hope to see you,

Starter Theme Comparison Chart

Libraries new to Drupal often wonder where to begin with finding a theme for their website. If you are planning to customize a theme, there are several starter themes that will give you a basic layout along with many of the dreaded cross browser CSS fixes. Choosing one of these starter themes can still be daunting.

Luckily I found a fantastic chart that compares the features of most of them.

http://drupalstaging.com/starter-themes/starter-theme-comparison.html

Also you can switch to any of the themes while on the website. This way you could see which one might work without having to install them yourself. Also you could use the Firefox plugin Firebug to poke around the elements.

I highly suggest the Firebug plugin if you have never used it.

Drupal 6 version of Millennium module available for download

This is a dev release.

http://drupal.org/project/millennium

I excised the personal contact info from the quoted email.

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: Drupal 6 version of Millennium module available for download
From: Alejandro Garza Gonzalez
Organization: Dirección de Biblioteca, Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus Monterrey
To: NGC4LIB@LISTSERV.ND.EDU

Just a quick note...

The development version (e.g. "still changing") of the Millennium
integration module for Drupal 6 is now out.

http://drupal.org/project/millennium

This module imports bibliographic information from the Millennium
WebOpac (library catalog) and generates Drupal pages which include
real-time holdings information.

The module was already available for Drupal 5, but some told me they
were meaning to use or already using Drupal 6 in their institutions.
Enjoy! =)

Module Features

auto-crawl or manual import of items with each cron run

support for external book jacket image services

imports Library of Congress book description and Table of Contents
along with item, available for searching

choose between real-time holdings information or just a link to
the original item in your WebOpac

maps MARC fields to taxonomy vocabularies for navigation and RSS

Google Books links for items available online

We are currently using the Drupal 5 version of the module at our
Library, which is also using Apache Solr. For a demo search, try this link:

IP Authentication

Can Drupal IP authenticate users? I'm looking to use Drupal in a law library setting. We have several subscriptions that are IP authenticated so you do not have to enter a user name or password.

Thaks for any tips or suggestions,
Ideas for Drupal4Lib IG Event at ALA in Chicago?

This is still a while off but I thought I'd put out an initial request before the holidays officially begin. It's a request for ideas and suggestions for the meeting of the LITA Drupal4Lib Interest Group at the 2009 ALA Conference in Chicago.

Feel free to leave comments either here or on the LITA Blog at:

http://tinyurl.com/Drupal4LibALAchicago

LAST JUNE/JULY IN ANAHEIM

Last June, we had a pretty nice BoF with librarians discussing Drupal projects they were working on. We also had a round-robin Q&A with librarians new to Drupal who were thinking about maybe using the CMS but wanting more information.

Here's my write-up of the event:

"Drupal4Lib BoF at ALA Anaheim"

ALA 2009 IN CHICAGO

So next year, happily enough, we'll be meeting in Chicago (my hometown) and I wanted to poll people to see what they thought.

A BoF is pretty nice but we could just as easily have a speaker or two, or investigate an interesting theme or topic.

Time-wise, I don't think we’d get more than an hour and a half -- two hours max. Fun things might include specific modules for library application, using Drupal in a library environment -- anything really.

So if you have any ideas or suggestions, if you'd like to speak or would like to see someone else speak, if there's a theme or topic you’d like to investigate, please leave a comment either here or on the LITA Blog at:

http://tinyurl.com/Drupal4LibALAchicago

With just a little work, I'm sure we can arrange something that our fellow Drupal4Lib'ers would look forward to.

Thanks for any help,

LEO

(2008-09 Chair of the LITA Drupal4Lib IG)

Do It With Drupal Library Meetup

I'm getting pumped for Do It With Drupal coming up in December. (That, and for getting to visit New Orleans for the first time in 15 years!) I'd like to organize a library meetup either over lunch or in the evening on the 10th. It would be great to meet some of you in person and hear how you are using Drupal at your library. Who's with me??

Drupal performance tuning / server configuration questions

I'm in the process of setting up a Drupal 6 site for a reasonably large urban public library in Canada, with an expectation that the site will receive about 5,000 visits a day. It's going on a Windows box that will be hosting two other separate applications, each on different installed servers (IIS with a library events application and ezproxy). We have a separate database server in place to hopefully give us plenty of room to grow. [more]

I'm making fairly liberal use of CCK fields, which I hazily understand can have performance implications. At the same time, I understand that Drupal scales very well. My questions are:

How much do I need to worry/think about performance tuning Drupal?

What are the best resources for learning about Drupal performance issues?

Should I be thinking about load testing, and what are the best ways to go about that?

Thanks in advance.

Tips on creating a huge page of links

Does anyone have any good advice for creating a content type for links? Does anyone know a better way to do this than what I describe in the following?

Our library has a huge page of links for finding good books to read. There are several headings that take you to different parts to the page via anchors. Anyhow, take a look at it. You'll get it as soon as you see it.

http://www.hooverlibrary.org/goodbooks

It's actually a legacy page that I have coped over to a Drupal page. It uses old and nasty html with tables and it's really yucky to update. I could clean it up but I would really like to create a content type called links, create a taxonomy scheme and then build a page with views listing the links. I'm not sure the best way to go about it though. A huge advantage would be that I could give staff access to the content type and they could help keep up with it.

Modules: CCK, Views, Contemplate

Any ideas?

Customization Details?

It would be helpful if we could share details on what themes we are using and how they've been modified, especially front pages. Currently I am developing a site for Stony Brook University Libraries using the Beginning W2 theme, and I would appreciate learning what others use and why, and how you've modified it.

Related to this, I am bursting to learn how others have modified any of your *.tpl.php pages.

I will post more as I continue my design and implementation for SBU libs.

Thanks very much :)

Web 2.0 technologies promise to streamline your web management and provide your patrons with new ways to experience and connect with your library. In this two-day workshop we will explore Drupal, an open-source content management framework that provides the power and flexibility to transform your library's web presence. On day one we will initiate you into the world of Drupal , looking at how it is being used across a variety of libraries and participating in a fresh install of the system. You will then walk through customizing a site, adding functionality, managing users, and tackling other administrative tasks. On day two, we will work through the process of building a website using the pieces that Drupal provides and we will explore ways to enhance the user’s experience.

Instructor: Brian Mayer

Location:
Metropolitan New York Library Council
John Blyberg releases SOPAC2 beta

John Blyberg has released the first public beta of SOPAC2, the social catalog system for Drupal that he started at Ann Arbor District Library and has continued to develop for the newly launched Darien Public Library catalog. SOPAC2 consists of three components, Locum -- a catalog abstraction layer, Insurge -- a service for managing social interaction, and SOPAC2 itself, which is the Drupal module that ties it all together. Of course, a less Drupal-centric evaluator might say tha Locum ties it together and SOPAC2 connects it to Drupal.

As an abstraction layer, Locum also uses connectors to communicate with the catalog, and at this juncture, only a Millennium connector has been created.

The software comes with caveats about its beta status. While this is fine at Darien, it might be (and should be) a production blocker for those libraries where Mr. Blyberg is not employed, as he warns that the database structure will change in the next release.

http://www.thesocialopac.net

Library Drupal BoF in Chicago

Just a preliminary head's up that we'll be having a Library Drupal BoF as part of the Chicago Drupal Camp taking place at UIC on Friday & Saturday, Oct. 24 & 25.

They're still working on the program, but the Library BoF will be on Friday (10/24) in the early afternoon (probably starting at 2pm or 3pm). Location: Innovation Center (1240 W. Harrison - near Racine) in Chicago. (website: http://drupalcampchicago.org)

The goals of the Library BoF (besides getting together) are:

Showcase library-related Drupal projects in the Chicagoland area.

Talk about future plans and aspirations, field questions and compare experiences.

So whether you've done a project or would like to do a project, this event is for you. We had a great time doing this in Anaheim for ALA and it's good to organize something similar for the home team.

Mark you calendars today!

UPDATE (9/26/08): Here's the official link for the event on the Drupal Camp Chicago site:

Bay Area Drupal Camp

BADCamp is shaping up to be a great regional event. If you will be in the Bay Area, you should sign up immediately at http://badcamp.net, as there is limited room at the venue on the Cal campus. There is a star-studded roster of presenters and attendees.

Got something to show? You can propose a session!

I have proposed a BoF session on Drupal in Libraries.

From the original post:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Event Info | Register | Directions | Map | Sponsorship

BADCamp 2008

Saturday and Sunday, October 11th and 12th

UC Berkeley

The second annual Bay Area Drupal Camp will take place Saturday, October 11th and Sunday October 12th, 2008 at UC Berkeley Campus in Berkeley, California. Last year's event was a

smashing success with over 220 registered attendees and approximately 30 sessions.

Drupal in Libraries -- from the ALA

Just saw this publication from the ALA:

http://www.techsource.ala.org/ltr/drupal-in-libraries.html

I have yet to read it, but will pick up a copy soon -- the sample of the text gives a decent idea of what the book is about.

Cheers,

Content Organization ?

Hi everyone, Please help!

I'm just getting started entering content into my first Drupal 6 site and I am struggling with how to keep all the content organized and reusable. I already have what I think are too many content types. Seems like the content types should be generalized and less descriptive so I can reuse them whenever I want. What is the best way to keep Content Types simple/easy-to-use while maintaining reusability?

BTW, I'm using Views to create custom queries for page display.

Single Sign-On with a Domain Controller

Hey,

I'm a computer programming student working at a local library for the summer. I was asked to build an intranet website using Drupal, and I've hit a bit of a snag when it comes to the authentication.

They've asked me to set up a Single Sign-On system, wherein employees that log into their staff stations are automatically logged in to the staff intranet website. I've learned from the IT workers (the library outsources their IT to another company) that the authentication is done using a Domain Controller. The server runs on Apache, not sure of the OS at this point. (I think it might be linux...) We're on Drupal 5.7.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing? What steps did you take?

Is there a tutorial for setting up an index?

Hi there,

I'm not a librarian.

But I think that a library type of site is pretty close to what I'm after.

I subscribe to a magasine that has session plans in it and I'm investigating setting up a searchable index of those resource online.

Basicaly I want to store, for each session plan:: Year, Month, Page, Session Title, Session Type, Author, then half a dozen or so keywords.

So that a user can search for: "I want a film based session that deals with violence" or "a music based session that looks at identity" etc. - and the website will return the Year, Month and Title and page number of a session plan.

Does anyone know of a tutorial for setting up this kind of a website using Drupal?

Cheers

David

Corporate Library Catalog Proposal based on Drupal

Hi all,

I'm looking at re-vamping our library catalog and going with something more social and lighter-weight. We are a small corporate library in the biotech space. I've put together some thoughts on what I'd like to see and would appreciate your criticism. I've been researching the catalog workflow (user and admin), but I could easily have missed something along the way. I'm also not a Drupal guru yet - though I am a big fan and have created several websites with it. Any comments or suggestions regarding the ideas in the blog article would be greatly appreciated.

Corporate Library Catalog Design Proposal

We are currently using Drupal for our library website and an RSS item database (for non-RSS enabled alert sources). I've also prototyped a multi-user blog and an internal news service.

Drupal4Lib BoF (ALA Anaheim)

Okay, we'll be meeting for our Drupal4lib BoF on Sun. (6/29, 3:30p-5:00p) -- in the LITA Bloggers Room (till they chase us out).

This will be an informal get-together of people to talk about how they've implemented Drupal or how they'd like to implement Drupal. Whether you're a newbie or pro is fine. Everyone is welcome. I'll see if I can dig up a projector so people can do brief presentations of their projects.

Please leave comments and suggestions.

Investigating event management for a biggish public library

We're a 33-branch public library in Ottawa gradually getting up to speed on Drupal. (Extremely early sandbox stage, let's say.) We have a pressing, and as yet unmet, need for handling event registrations at all of those branches. Our requirements include, among other things, allowing signups for a recurring class with multiple dates (i.e. one registration for all sessions), adding a waiting list, being able to globally start all registrations on a specific date, and being able to cancel a session and send an email to all participants. From looking at the Event Manager and Signup modules (are there others?), we would need to undertake, or commission, a wholesale rewrite of those modules to get what we need.

Event management is an important item for many libraries. Has anyone implemented event management specifically for libraries in Drupal using one of these modules or another? Is anyone out there thinking along a similar line? Can you share the requirements you've met with code, or that you have and, like us, haven't met yet?

Many thanks,
