Pathauto 5.x-2.3 and 6.x-1.1 released!

In case you don't have Update module to ping you about new releases, I just wanted to notify you that I've just made the Pathauto 5.x-2.3 and 6.x-1.1 releases! Note that this will probably be the last Pathauto 5.x release, as development focus has now shifted to 6.x-2.x. Read more about what's been changed and fixed in the release notes! :)

Pathauto 6.x-1.x to 6.x-2.x Upgrade Guide

This is a wiki to create instructions for ugprading from Pathauto 6.x-1.x to Pathauto 6.x-2.x. Your help in keeping it accurate is greatly appreciated, you can also just read it to see what exciting new features are being added/changed.

Transliteration has changed (yes, again) so that it uses the Transliteration module.

Help Test and Translate Pathauto 5.x-2.3 and 6.x-1.1

Freso and I have just put what we consider to be the finishing touches onto what will become the next official release of Pathauto. We're using it on all of our sites and have tested it pretty thoroughly. For 6.x, we even have some simpletests now which execute perfectly.

So, we're writing to you to ask for two things:

Please test the "dev" tarballs of Pathauto for 6.x-1.x or 5.x-2.x and report any bugs you find. Of course, there are some known bugs, so search the queue before submitting it.

If you are a translator (or would like to become one) please update the .po file for your language. We had to change a few strings in this release so translations are now out of date a little bit.

Assuming that all bugs found are small and/or that there are zarro boogs found in this process, we'll make the release next Thursday.

Thanks kindly!

tag combinations similarly to "term/1,2" and "term/1+2" don't work with pathauto?

Hi all,

if this issue is correctly understood, then tag combination is not available?

Is there any chance to get operators "+" and "," working under pathauto like they do in plain taxonomy module?

thanks!

Having trouble with Pathauto created aliases when using Event Repeat.

I have both Pathauto and Event Repeat installed.

It seems that when I update a repeating event set (either the entire set, or just future occurrences) all the Pathauto created url aliases get deleted except that last one.

I've tried all three "Update action" settings in the Pathauto module and still no luck. Any ideas?

Example:
Event Set
Event A : has alias
Event B : has alias
Event C : has alias

After an update, all aliases except for Event C are gone.
Event A : no alias
Event B : no alias
Event C : has alias

New 6.x Releases on the Horizon

So, Freso and I have had some discussion about what bugs should be fixed prior to a 6.x-2 branch and what should go in after. I wanted to do a little more to keep track of this state (and also give people a little advanced warning that a 6.x-1.1 is about to be released so that you can help test it).

If there is a bug that you think should be fixed prior to a 6.x-1.1 feel free to add it to the list.

Issues For Before 6.x-1.1 (i.e. what should be in both branches)

<del>pgsql compliance and performance improvement for node bulk updates</del>

<del>"Strings to Remove" not being removed if they are capitals or the first/last word in the box.</del>

<del>Doxygen clean-up</del>

<del>Simpletest for Pathauto</del>

<del>Use drupal_str functions instead of str functions</del>

<del>Add per-language patterns for multilingual node types</del>

<del>Individual path is away after opening preview</del>

<del>Editing customized profile fields deletes blog aliases</del>

<del>Code (style) normalisation</del>

<del>If an existing redirect is exactly the same as the current alias, delete the redirect</del>

<del>Synchronising 5.x-2.x and 6.x-1.x</del>

<del>bookpathalias token not working</del>

<del>Update the README.txt and INSTALL.txt</del>

Issues For 6.x-2.x (i.e. what will become the 6.x-2.x branch)

Use existing transliteration module

require confirmation before deleting aliases

allow other modules to affect strings to help with custom accent/string replacement

perform bulk updates during cron and/or via the batch API

Create separate bulk update page

Bulk update the old way (replacing aliases)

UI Review from devel list

String clean up
Actually, I think this could easily be pushed to 2.x as the strings aren't awful and I think the .pot has been stirred quite enough by my double-space cleansing. :) -Freso

Split some of the code into smaller pieces (== more testable code)
Will affect or be affected by "allow other modules to affect strings ...", possibly even being swallowed by that issue entirely.

Allow unique "Update Action" settings per item type (node, taxonomy, etc) or item (eg. page, story, vocabulary, etc) - I'd really like to see this make it in 1.x :) I but 2.x is ok. I'm willing to re-roll the patch when someone is ready to consider it.

Editing nodes without an alias should create an alias even with update action = 'Do nothing with existing aliases' - I really think this one needs to get committed, as it leads to a situations where the user "asks" for an automatic alias but one isn't generated. Note that it also affects bulk updates, as nodes with empty aliases will never get updated.
After discussing this, we decided to push this back for 2.x, as old users may have become accustomed to this behaviour, and they shouldn't be surprised with the release of 6.x-1.1. It should definitely be fixed in 6.x-2.x though! -Freso

More simpletests...

Also, note that when we branch for 6.x-2.x that will probably be the end of active development of the 5.x branch. Beyond that point something will have to be a bug and/or really important to get committed to the 5.x-2.x/6.x-1.x branches.

Path Redirect Upgrade Available

If you don't have Update Status to tell you about it then you've got me ;)

The glorious Path Redirect module just releates 5.x-1.2 which fixed a nasty infinite loop bug (a bug which Pathauto triggered pretty often). So, if you use one or both of these modules I encourage you to upgrade now.

Three cheers to horsepunchkid for the release.

Co-maintainer Best Practices (also Pathauto Co-Maintainers!)

Pathauto now has 3 maintainers (greggles, mikeryan and Freso).

We've got a couple of practices that we're trying to follow to help coordinate and minimize work and I thought it could be helpful to share these ideas and allow others to contribute their thoughts on best practices for co-maintainership:

Use the Issue Queue: nearly all changes go through the issue queue and are committed using meaningful commit messages

Decide which branches are to be used for what purposes. 4.7.x is unsupported - nothing goes there. 5.x-1.x is basically done as well unless there were a critical bug. 5.x-2.x and 6.x-1.x are still actively supported and are basically the same set of code so any commit to one should be immediately ported/committed to the other to help keep them in sync. New features that are more experimental will go into 6.x-2.x at this point.

"Shard" the issues into areas of expertise. Freso has more experience with i18n and i12n so he takes all of those issues. Mike and I both try to grab everything else. I try to at least respond on every issue in the queue. The benefit of this is that the co-maintainers stop worrying about some parts of the project. The goal of co-maintainers, after all, is to help reduce the workload and splitting the work is a big part of that. Coordinating that split will make it even smoother.

Agree on a Roadmap For Pathauto this is largely contained in the issue queue and the scope of the module is pretty well defined at this point. The only roadmap is to make it "smaller, faster, bugfree." But if the project is less clear on what could happen in the future then it's good to make sure you all agree before starting work.

Get some non "maintainer" maintainers: mlsamuelson and VeryMisunderstood are both helpful in the issue queue answering questions or teasing out the exact problems from vague please for help. This is enormously helpful.

Keep communicating Going on vacation? Have a big project that will slow you down for a while? Let the other folks know so that they can cover areas you may usually handle.

5.x to 6.x Upgrade Guide

This is a wiki to keep track of changes people will need to keep in mind when they upgrade.

5.x-1.x to 6.x-1.x upgrades:

Be sure to read the 5.x-1.x to 5.x-2.x upgrade guide since it will apply to your situation as well.

Settings Page Location:

The settings page has moved to improve usability.

So,
admin/settings/pathauto
is now
admin/build/path/pathauto
and is a tab under "URL aliases" called "Automated alias settings"

Can I use pathauto for OG ?

Hi All
I have searched this group & the docs in drupal main site and didn't find the answer, so i am trying here :

Can I use pathauto (with token) that all the posts in group will have path like

groups/{group_path}/[nid]

I want the user to set a path for the group manually (it's hebrew site to i dont want to use [ogname] ), and from than on every post in the group will have this pattern

the issue is that posts can be public and can be a group post , so if i use "Node path settings" it is global

so my questions are :
1. Is this possible to know the group path (something like [termalias] )?
2. is it possible to set pathauto like above that it will be "smart" to know if it's posted public or in a group and the path will bw set as above.

Thanks Avior

It's come time for another point release of Pathauto and you can get a "sneak preview" of this by downloading and using 5.x-2.x-dev.

One bug left to fix?

There are still some issues that I'd like to clean up. It seems that 5.x-2.1 caused some problems for modules that make heavy use of taxonomy for their own purposes (forum, image gallery, etc.). Nancyw came up with a patch that will improve the situation for bulk updates: http://drupal.org/node/188606#comment-782627 If more folks could test that, it would be great. That doesn't solve all the problems that 2.1 introduced for these modules, and if someone wants to fix that problem prior to 5.x-2.2 please let me know. Otherwise it will have to be a "known bug".

Bulk Generation Got Faster

Also, stennie came up with some good work to improve the speed of bulk udpates though this code should ideally get some more testing. In fact, all of it needs a little more testing. That's where you come in!

Sneak Preview (aka help test)

If you're a 5.x-2.1 user and can help test this 5.x-2.x-dev you'll help me make sure that 5.x-2.2 will be a nice and solid release so that I can focus on making Pathauto rock for 6.x.

Here is a list of changes since 2.1:

bug #219726 by psynaptic: 'update path aliases' node operation breaks publish operation

small notice in pathauto_taxonomy.inc

bug #228775 by greggles: Deleting nodes with feed aliases doesn't delete the feed alias

bug #228696 by greggles: bulk delete didn't include blogs or forums in list (add them)

adding id to js

bug #224243 by greggles: Slashes for [termalias] token field must not be removed.

I'm a bit confused about the "0" part of the default feed path of "0/feed". Why is it there, and under what circumstances should I leave or remove it? Apologies if this has been previously asked, I didn't find it.

Vocabulary Index paths & Token

Somewhere in fall 2007 I started working on Vocabulary Index. The 1.0 version has been available for some weeks now and I have already started working on 2.0 (although a final won't be released for a few months. It's mostly brainstorming at this time).

A short explanation of what the module does: It provides term listings for the vocabularies you want them provided for. For every vocab you can specify a path at which this term listing (the 'index page') will be accessible. Some kind of a taxonomy browser/business directory module, you might say.

I was a bit curious whether people think it's a good move to implement Tokens for the 2.0 release or not. On the one hand it does make Vocabindex more flexible. After all, creating paths to index pages will become a little easier, especially when vocabulary data changes: If you're using [title] for the path, the path could automatically be updated as soon as the vocab's title is changed. On the other hand all those tokens creates a bit of a mess of the admin pages and I'm trying to make the module as user-friendly as possible as I'm a usability freak.

So, the dilemma: Token implementation or not? I'd like to hear some opinions on this before actually starting development. Do you think it's necessary or do you vote for usability? This is not only a discussion about this module, but perhaps a general discussion about usability versus flexibility as well.

How to autocreate paths for unaliased nodes without touching existing aliases?

I would like pathauto to have a behaviour where, when I edit nodes, it will automatically create a new alias for those nodes that don't have an alias yet, but Pathauto should never modify my existing aliases or create duplicate aliases.

With the current set of update actions in Pathauto 5.x-2.x-dev this is not possible. With the update action 'Do nothing' it won't create an alias for unaliased nodes at all. With update action 2 (Create a new alias. Leave the existing alias functioning.) it will create duplicate aliases, which is not what I want. And with update action 3 (Create a new alias. Delete the old alias.) it will overwrite my existing aliases, which is also not what I want.

So I think we need a fourth option: Leave existing aliases untouched, but create a new alias if there isn't one yet.

How do other people feel about this?

I have just opened an issue for pathauto about this: http://drupal.org/node/228762

5.x-2.1 release imminent

Hello folks,

I've fixed a bunch of bugs in Pathauto recently and think it's about time for a 5.x-2.1 release. The current 5.x-2.x-dev is basically what I plan on tagging as a 5.x-2.1. If I could get some "yes, looks good" or "no, need to fix bug #x beforehand" that would be really helpful.

This is likely to be the last release for a couple of months so I'd like it to be really solid.

Thanks.

Pathauto taxonomy

Hey all,

To get strait to the point.

Pathauto creates alias for taxonomy/term/1 and you can set it to be [vocab]/[catpath].

What if I would like to create more aliases for the same vocabulary like for soccer/[catpath] to be soccer/[catpath] ?

I took a look at pathauto_taxonomy.inc and tried to hard code it in but with no luck.

I would like that so I can rewrite Views urls. Now you can say that I can pass a taxonomy term to a view and solve that.
For some reason it's just not the solution I'm looking for ...

Can anyone help me with this ?

Cheers!

fixing the "when admin creates alias and unticks the checkbox don't overwrite it on subsequent edits" bug

Here's the list of bugs that need to be fixed to get that working:

0 Since I reverted the code so far and stuck it in 180440 that would probably go in first and then...
1 http://drupal.org/node/193825 - maintenance for url_alias_extra
2 http://drupal.org/node/206461 - delete from url_alias_extra as well as creating the entries
3 http://drupal.org/node/201659 - which mostly works, but needs some more work in 193825

I think that's it. Each of those may involve multiple pieces of work, but at least between the original issue and the comments that should cover it.

I add this becase neclimdul asked about it.

co-maintainer for pathauto

Hi,

I've been asking folks to help with this for a while, but the situation is getting more serious (other projects are pulling me away and I will be offline for a while later this year) so I want to make a more clear request for assistance.

If you want to be the maintainer of the module, let me know but also prove that desire by helping in the issue queue and then you get to be the maintainer.

Note that as Pathauto maintainer you kind of also get to be token maintainer since the two are so closely tied.

The alternative is that I'll probably back out a bunch of the half-baked features I've added recently, strip it down to the bugfixes, and release a 5.x-2.1 and 6.x-1.x which would both be stable and relatively bug-free but not particularly moving forward.

Thanks.

autopath [cat]

i am working to call up different backgrounds using the path. i need the category in the path using autopath: like [cat]/[title] - or so i thought. i set it as such in the pathauto config settings, but pathauto is only creating the /[title] path and seemingly ignoring the category demand. on each new entry i AM selecting a category (of course.).

any thoughts on this? i am on drupal 4.7, and have the 4.7 version of pathauto installed (obviously.) has anyone had this experience or know a fix?
thanks
how many of your aliases are manually created?

In Pathauto 5.x-2.0 you now have the option (if you have the permission to create aliases) to tell Pathauto not to do its job and instead to let you set the path alias.

There is a new feature in the 2.x development branch of Pathauto which keeps track of whether the admin created the alias or not. If it appears to Pathauto that the admin created the alias, then Pathauto will not try to alias the object in the future.

So,

create (or edit) a node and uncheck the box for "Automatic alias"

edit the node again and submit - pathauto will remember your setting from last time and not create an alias for this node

as a user who does not have permission to create alias, edit the node and submit, Pathauto checks and remembers the setting from step 1 and not create an alias for the node

I think this is the desired behavior, but it has a drawback: we don't know the setting from step 1 for all aliases created before 5.x-2.1 so Pathauto assumes it should not create aliases whenever aliases from before 5.x-2.1 were created.

Proposal During the upgrade process Pathauto could run a query that would just create records for all old aliases and say "we assume that all nodes, users, and taxonomy objects were aliased by Pathauto" and therefore update them in the future normally. We can further instruct users in how to edit the table to mark them as admin maintained if the admin wants to prevent Pathauto form overwriting their work.

Benefits of this new database table include faster bulk deletes, more granular bulk deletes (i.e. just aliases created by pathauto), and eventually that it can be migrated to the core url_alias table and we won't have this problem :)

I'm inclined to follow my proposal since this is basically what we have already, but I'm posting here to get feedback to see if anyone feels that is wrong (like, you've created a bunch of admin aliases and can think of a better way to do this).

Issues to fix prior to 5.x-2.1

I've been working on a few issues that I want to have fixed before a 5.x-2.1 release. I thought I'd create this roadmap so people can provide their own input and also see what is left to do. When the top list gets empty it will be time for a new release. None of these changes are drastic, so the 5.x-2.x-dev release should be reasonably good for people who want to help with testing incremental changes.

If there is an issue that you feel should be on one of these lists, feel free to add it. This should only include issues which are fully reported and actionable (i.e. not in an "active (needs more info)" state).

This also lets people know which issues to work on if they want to help ;)

Status update Feb 14th I feel that with the plan laid out below we'll be ready for a release in another week or so. I'd really appreciate some help testing prior to the release.

Issues to try to fix for this release that need more work:

none!

To Test (have patches, need testers):

Cleaning up the Index Aliases

If you are one of the folks who enabled the "index aliases" feature and later found out that it wasn't such a great idea then you may be wondering how do I get rid of those aliases? Further, pathauto 5.x-2.x doesn't support them so they are now pretty useless.

You can see if you have any by opening up a connection to your database (e.g. using phpMyAdmin or the mysql shell tool) and running this query:

select * from url_alias where src like 'pathauto/%';

That will either say "Empty set (0.01 sec)" which means that you don't have any of these and can spend your time worrying about other things, OR it will return the records in your table that match this and then say something like "29 rows in set (0.00 sec)". So, if you get some number of rows in your set, you probably want to delete them.

First, confirm that you don't need them.

I had some records like this:

| 306 | pathauto/node/technology | technology |
| 260 | pathauto/taxonomy/timeline | timeline |

And indeed when I visit http://knaddison.com/technology I see that it's a page not found. Glad I haven't been using that!

To remove the aliases, it's another simple query to run in your database. It's also a good idea to make a backup before doing things like this "just in case".

delete from url_alias where src like 'pathauto/%';

That should say that it "affected" the same number of rows as your first query said that it found.

All done - your site is a little cleaner and should run slightly faster. Yay.

If you have any problems or other ideas about this please leave a comment.

To rebuild those index aliases with Views, read the integration with views section of Pathauto recipes.

Bug Stats and a Call for Testers Pathauto 5.x-2.x is around the corner

First, some statistics:

I grouped together 4.7-1.x and 5.x-1.x since they are largely the same code base.

Some of those 4.7.x-1.x/5.x-1.x bugs probably can get updated into the 5.x-2 queue or into the Token issue queue. But the point is - new version is pretty golden. Last statistics I saw showed several hundred sites running the 2.x version so it's getting fair amounts of testing.

Descriptoin

4.7.x-1.x & 5.x-1.x

5.x-2.x

Known Unfixed Bugs

13

3

Critical Issues

1

0

Perhaps there are some other interesting statistics from the issue queue. My point in posting this is that I'm feeling like 2.x is ready for a full release.

So, prior to that happening we need three things:

Upgrade docs - that's a wiki page, please help edit it.

Translations (I'll mail the translator's list in a few days)

A last bit of testing

So, if you could, please download and test the latest 5.x-2.x-dev. If you are currently using 5.x-2.x-beta4 then this will be a great improvement. Lots of the things that you struggled through will now be documented and explained (like try using the [user] token for a node - it will correct you!).

If you find an issue or see space for improvement, search the queue and then post a new issue if you don't find it. If it works fine for you, please post back here.

ps. the 1 critical bug in 5.x-1 also applies to 5.x-2 and it is postponed, which is kinda weird - but the point remains - 0 or 1 - that there are few criticals :)

Pathauto 5.x-1.x to 5.x-2.x New Features and Upgrade Guide

For users upgrading from Pathauto 5.x-1 to 5.x-2 here are some tips:

5.x-2.0 to 5.x-2.1 note:

The Internal feed alias text (leave blank to disable): is used to determine what, if any, feed alias will be created for the nodes. This was hardcoded previously but due to the fact that other modules can provide the rss feed (e.g. Views) it is now exposed as something that you can change. In general you should either leave it blank or leave it at the default. If you use views for your taxonomy aliases you probable want to use "feed" instead of the default "0/feed".

First, why upgrade? New features and bugfixes

New "Update Action" Make Old Alias Redirect to new alias

If you enable the Path Redirect module you will see a new Update Action. Currently the default Update Action is to create a new alias replacing the old alias. This is an attempt to balance performance and search engine optimization with "link rot". The new ability to make your old links provide a redirect to the new location provides an even better solution to the problem and is highly recommended.

Automatic Aliasing Optional during Content Creation

Those with the ability to set a path manually now get a check box during content creation and editing. This allows them to either allow Pathauto to create the alias automatically or manually create one themselves.

Punctuation Control

You now have control over how every punctuation character is handled. You can have them removed, replaced with the separator, or passed through and included in the URL. This feature helps provide greater control over how aliases will look.

Transliteration Optional

Like in 5.x-1.x, Transliteration is optional. You can enable it by renaming the i18n-ascii.example.txt file to i18n-ascii.txt and then changing the setting in the admin interface. You can edit this file - future upgrades will only overwrite the example file. See also the handbook for advice on customizing it for more languages beyond what is included in the example file: http://drupal.org/node/185664

Optional Lower Case Characters

Much like transliteration being optional, site administrators now have the option of using the case of the original values instead of forcing them to lower case.

Pattern Replacement Enhanced by Token Module

Pathauto now relies on the Token module for tokens. This provides site administrators with a much larger number of tokens to use in creating aliases. It also allows integration with a much larger number of modules.

Bulk Alias Deletion

Pathauto has always made it easy to build aliases, now it makes it easy to delete aliases. You can delete all aliases or just certain kinds of aliases such as aliases for users, aliases for content, etc.

Make Bulk Generation Scalable

The Bulk Generation feature now runs in configurable sized chunks so that even a large site or a site on a slow server can build aliases for hundreds of thousands of objects.

Token Installation

Be sure to install the Token Module prior to upgrading your Pathauto installation. If you don't, it's possible to get into a state where you site is throwing errors and you can't enable Token because the checkbox is disabled by system module. To resolve that simple disable Pathauto and re-enable Pathauto.

Upgrade Changes (decided to upgrade? read this)

Because Pathauto 5.x-2.x uses the Token module and because the Token module rebuilt the patterns with an eye towards consistency, extensibility, and security for other modules to use, their had to make some changes to the patterns that Pathauto uses.

General Pattern Tips

When given the choice, you should use a -raw version of a token. For example, instead of [title] use the [title-raw]. This is necessary for Pathauto's punctuation replacement to work properly. Despite the warning about raw user input, the Drupal path module (which Pathauto relies on) filters the raw information so within Pathauto it is safe to use these -raw tokens.

For "Content Patterns"

[user] should be [author-name-raw]
[cat] should be [term-raw]
[catpath] should be [termpath-raw]

For User Patterns

(I don't think there are any changes here other than the -raw change.)

For Taxonomy Patterns

(I don't think there are any changes here other than the -raw change.)

How Bulk Generate differs from the old Bulk Update

Now the Bulk Generation feature simply creates aliases for objects which are not currently aliased and it only does this for a small number in each execution. So, if you want to rebuild aliases for a certain kind of object then you must first delete it and then Bulk Generate it. You can find a helper tool at http://example.com/admin/build/path/delete_bulk which will help you delete large numbers of aliases. See the handbook for more details - http://drupal.org/node/144904

Features Removed

Index aliases are no longer available. If you really need that feature see how to create it by pairing pathauto patterns with the Views module http://drupal.org/node/124462 See http://drupal.org/node/91116 for the motivation to remove this feature.

You can delete all of the index aliases following instructions for cleaning up path aliases.

RFC: updating feed aliases? or not?

In reviewing old bugs I dug up: feed aliases don't get updated following normal "update action" settings.

But I'm not sure how this should behave.

One theory is that it should follow the update action because that's what the admin specified.

Another is that it should simply follow the "create new alias in addition to old one" style pattern so that old feed readers won't lose the feed.

Thoughts? "Yet Another Option" doesn't feel very good.

thoughts on auto pathing

I've lately been working on a few sites with 10K plus path aliases, all generated from pathauto. Mostly on dedicated boxes so resources aren't too much of an issue. It got me thinking about an alternate approach, maybe an addition to pathauto or a separate module. Ok, here goes ...

Pathauto has a nice way of defining path naming rules for content types. These paths are stored in the database as aliases. Good. But how about NOT storing any of these paths in the database. Just "hook" into Drupal to generate a path on the fly based on the pathauto ruleset.

Upon saving or updating any node, the pathauto "rules" would be checked to make sure there is not already content that "owns" that path based on its title. If there is already a piece of content that will generate that path based on its title, then redisplay the edit form and show a message -- "A node or category has already reserved this title, please choose another unique title."

So, it's a strict check to make sure all titles are unique on the site. If all node titles/categories can have unique titles then you can (maybe?) do this sort of thing with paths on the fly. Some sites will not want this type of restriction on unique titles, but in many cases it's good to not have duplicate H1 titles across a site.

So, just throwing this out for discussion. I'm not sure if there are hooks that could be used for this sort of thing -- need to do more digging. I fear the path lookup is deep in the Drupal core and not accessible. Don't want to use javascript like urlify since it won't work for search engines. Appreciate any comments or suggestions.

pathauto i18n integration

There is some concern that pathauto's i18n integration isn't functioning properly. I don't understand it or have the interest to work on it. So, I'm writing here to say:

1) If it's agreed that nobody has it working, I'll remove it so we don't confuse people about totally buggy code. Please respond either here or in that issue if you have a feeling about that.

2) To try to solicit someone who does need it to work on that area of the module. Ideally I'd like to see the code in the i18n module rather than in pathauto, but I can't force that. If you do want to be responsible for getting it working right, please provide a patch to either pathauto or (better) i18n module.

Thanks!

new module - Path Search

Three cheers for duplication and redundancy and doing the same thing over and over and repetitiveness. /sarcasm off...

Ok, well there's a new module called Path Search http://drupal.org/project/pathsearch it searches paths.

You may be confused because it wasn't that long ago that we got a "find path" module (written up here on g.d.o http://drupal.org/project/find_path)

Perhaps the best bits of both can be combined into one super module!

major pathauto update

Well folks, I've just done a few changes to pathauto.

The first thing was to create a Pathauto 5.x-1.1 which is likely the last in this line. It should be relatively stable and feature complete with the 4.7 version (or a little better).

The second was to create a new development branch for 5.x-2.x which is where I committed 10 patches that had been sitting in the queue. There may be some "fallout" from all these changes, but I think it's generally headed in the right direction.

I do request that those of you interested in pathauto will test out the new version to help make sure that it's good.

The major goal of the 5.x--2 version is to look for new features to implement and get rid of functionality that I don't want to maintain such as the listing page/index alias functionality. The biggest part of the work I hope to get done is twofold: 1) use token module for all the patterns and 2) using something like selenium to implement the test plan for pathauto that I've been writing (note - please help edit that!).

So, that's about it. I'm still looking for some people to help maintain the module. In particular 4.7 gets relatively little maintenance so someone could step in to take care of that branch.

Finally, thanks to ahoeben, add1sun. csevb10, gerd riesselmann, Claudiu Cristea, and umonkey for their help in finding/fixing bugs!

New Module - Find Path

A new module was announced yesterday "Find Path"

http://drupal.org/project/find_path

For those of you using Pathauto or URLIFY this could be quite a handy module to keep you from having to go login to your database to edit the records - instead you get this simple interface.

Has anyone tried this? Any thoughts?

Note: I haven't tried it, just read the description

how to handle single site config including subdomain

I'm moving my existing corporate site (html) to Drupal and want to include what had been three Wordpress installs in the single Drupal site (1 blog and 2 podcasts). I've got it all pretty much worked out ... except that one of the Wordpress installs lives in a subdomain.

I want to include that content in the main Drupal site/database so it can be indexed with everything else. The question: how do i accomplish this without setting up a second site pointing to the subdomain directory?

Can i simply use pathauto to create a url path that is the same as the existing subdomain, i.e. sitename.com/subdomain folder? Will this work?

Thanks much. My only other Drupal site is a simple single-domain configuration.

How does pathauto determine what aliases to create?

I'm interested in something that sounds like maybe pathauto will fill be none of the words I've seen exactly tell me that it does.

So tell me about pathauto. Does it use menus and menu titles to know what to make the alias? Does it use the Title of the node? Is it configurable to use either or both?

Now to go find a menuauto that fills in by default from the node title.

TIA,
How to generate subdomains in Drupal URLs based on content type?

I hope it's ok to post this here. I first posted this question in the support forums -- but it was suggested that I post here instead since it's a path question.

I'm totally new to Drupal but experienced in SEO and PHP. I've always rolled my own crappy CMS because of custom needs. I'm REALLY hoping Drupal will help me to stop this wasteful methodology.

The main thing I need to figure out is how to take full control of Drupal URLS. My future sites need simple URLs in the style of about.com wherein each subject or content type is assigned a unique subdomain (one site, many dynamic subdomains like http://dogs.about.com, http://cats.about.com).

All incoming subdomain links are directed to the base folder where an HTACCESS file does an internal URL re-write (no redirects) for Drupal. This part is easy for me so this is NOT a question about DNS or HTACCESS.

What I need to know is how to get Drupal/Path-auto etc. to generate (alias?) links using my pattern? Here's the URL pattern (with no subdomain for the default type "pages"):

  http://[content-type].domain.com/[pathauto-node-title].html

it would look something like this:

  pages: http://domain.com/[node-title].html
  forums: http://forum.domain.com/[node-title].html
  blogs: http://blog.domain.com/[node-title].html
  articles http://article.domain.com/[node-title].html
  news items: http://news.domain.com/[node-title]-[date].html
  newsletters: http://newsletter.domain.com/[node-title]-[date].html
  secure: https://secure.domain.com/[node-title].html

I'm looking in Pathauto but it doesn't seem to allow defining the entire URL. I hope I'm just missing something obvious. Does the "alias" hold an entire URL or just the path part?

I've searched around in the forums and the other subdomain questions seem to deal with DNS, HTACCESS, redirecting etc. and not how to get Drupal to create links using the pattern. Perhaps this part is already too obvious?

Thanks,
Chad

Test plan Wiki Page

This wiki page documents a set of test for the Pathauto module. It needs help, but I wanted to publish the work that I've done so far so that others can help in coming up with other tests. Eventually I would like to turn these tests into something that can be automated with a tool like selenium and then run them before making any commits/releases.

One TODO: decide on a reference module that implements it's own pathauto to use for testing. Date could be a good one.

without further ado....

Pathauto Test Pattern for Pathauto 5

Prerequisites:

Fresh Drupal install
Insert pathauto files into a modules directory
Enable
Blog module
Book module
Forum module

Installation test

Vist the admin/build/modules page

Leave path disabled

Enable pathauto

Pathauto should require path.module

Settings

Visit admin/settings/pathauto

General settings:

Separator. Change the separator to a different value like _. Create node, taxonomy term, and user that contain a space. Ensure that the space is replaced by the separator.

Set maximum alias to 30 and component length to 10. Create content. Ensure that components and the total length are truncated appropriately.

Index aliases - don't test. These suck.

Update action: Test each of the three.

Quotes:

Set quotation marks to be replaced by separator. Create node and taxonomy term that contain a quotation mark. Ensure that the quotation mark is replaced by separator.

Set quotation marks to be replaced by separator. Create node and taxonomy term that contain a quotation mark. Ensure that the quotation mark is removed with no replacement character.

issues prior to 5.x--1 or 4.7.x--1 release

Prior to a 5.x release I'd like to finish off these issues:

Remove listing page functionality
Remove Index Aliases
Remove or Make optional the Transliteration
New algorithm and/or exposed control for transliteration

And of course this bug:

taxonomy_get_term and illegal_offset errors when adding taxonomy/nodes

It would be great to get some comments from folks on some of these issues because I haven't really decided on whether to do them or not. I'll also post back here when I've got a more firm "beta" for 5.0 and 4.7 for people to test and will then do a tag release.

For 4.7 there are just a handful of random "this doesn't quite work" kinds of problems that I haven't really honed in on. Seeing as how 1) most Drupal users tend to move to the new release shortly after it happens and 2)pathauto for 4.7 isn't killing any babies I'm focusing on the 5.x release as being an even more solid one than the 4.7.

big day for internationalization in Paths

Steven recently got frustrated enough with the Drupal core restriction on international letters in path module that he removed it..

So, now pathauto and urlify can use any character from the node title that the user submits.

I've created an issue for pathauto to see how to best handle this. Please provide your input on the ideas there.
