New features that are more experimental will go into 6.x-2.x at this point.</p> </li> <li> <p><strong>"Shard" the issues into areas of expertise.</strong> Freso has more experience with i18n and i12n so he takes all of those issues. Mike and I both try to grab everything else. I try to at least respond on every issue in the queue. The benefit of this is that the co-maintainers stop worrying about some parts of the project. The goal of co-maintainers, after all, is to help reduce the workload and splitting the work is a big part of that. Coordinating that split will make it even smoother.</p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Agree on a Roadmap</strong> For Pathauto this is largely contained in the issue queue and the scope of the module is pretty well defined at this point. For every vocab you can specify a path at which this term listing (the 'index page') will be accessible. Some kind of a taxonomy browser/business directory module, you might say.</p> <p>I was a bit curious whether people think it's a good move to implement Tokens for the 2.0 release or not. On the one hand it does make Vocabindex more flexible. After all, creating paths to index pages will become a little easier, especially when vocabulary data changes: If you're using [title] for the path, the path could automatically be updated as soon as the vocab's title is changed. On the other hand all those tokens creates a bit of a mess of the admin pages and I'm trying to make the module as user-friendly as possible as I'm a usability freak.</p> <p>So, the dilemma: Token implementation or not? With the update action 'Do nothing' it won't create an alias for unaliased nodes at all. With update action 2 (Create a new alias. This was hardcoded previously but due to the fact that other modules can provide the rss feed (e.g. Views) it is now exposed as something that you can change. In general you should either leave it blank or leave it at the default. If you use views for your taxonomy aliases you probable want to use "feed" instead of the default "0/feed".</p> <h2>First, why upgrade? New features and bugfixes</h2> <h3>New "Update Action" Make Old Alias Redirect to new alias<br id="redirect"></h3> <p>If you enable the Path Redirect module you will see a new Update Action. Currently the default Update Action is to create a new alias replacing the old alias. This is an attempt to balance performance and search engine optimization with "link rot". The new ability to make your old links provide a redirect to the new location provides an even better solution to the problem and is highly recommended.</p> <h3>Automatic Aliasing Optional during Content Creation</h3> <p>Those with the ability to set a path manually now get a check box during content creation and editing. This allows them to either allow Pathauto to create the alias automatically or manually create one themselves.</p> <h3>Punctuation Control</h3> <p>You now have control over how every punctuation character is handled. You can have them removed, replaced with the separator, or passed through and included in the URL. This feature helps provide greater control over how aliases will look.</p> <h3>Transliteration Optional</h3> <p>Like in 5.x-1.x, Transliteration is optional. You can enable it by renaming the i18n-ascii.example.txt file to i18n-ascii.txt and then changing the setting in the admin interface. You can edit this file - future upgrades will only overwrite the example file. This provides site administrators with a much larger number of tokens to use in creating aliases. It also allows integration with a much larger number of modules.</p> <h3>Bulk Alias Deletion</h3> <p>Pathauto has always made it easy to build aliases, now it makes it easy to delete aliases. You can delete all aliases or just certain kinds of aliases such as aliases for users, aliases for content, etc.</p> <h3>Make Bulk Generation Scalable</h3> <p>The Bulk Generation feature now runs in configurable sized chunks so that even a large site or a site on a slow server can build aliases for hundreds of thousands of objects.</p> <h3>Token Installation</h3> <p>Be sure to install the Token Module prior to upgrading your Pathauto installation. If you don't, it's possible to get into a state where you site is throwing errors and you can't enable Token because the checkbox is disabled by system module. To resolve that simple disable Pathauto and re-enable Pathauto.</p> <h2>Upgrade Changes (decided to upgrade? read this)</h2> <p>Because Pathauto 5.x-2.x uses the Token module and because the Token module rebuilt the patterns with an eye towards consistency, extensibility, and security for other modules to use, their had to make some changes to the patterns that Pathauto uses.</p> <p><br id="pattern_changes"></p> <h3>General Pattern Tips</h3> </p> <p>When given the choice, you should use a -raw version of a token. For example, instead of [title] use the [title-raw]. This is necessary for Pathauto's punctuation replacement to work properly. Despite the warning about raw user input, the Drupal path module (which Pathauto relies on) filters the raw information so within Pathauto it is safe to use these -raw tokens.</p> <h3>For "Content Patterns"</h3> <p>[user] should be [author-name-raw]<br /> [cat] should be [term-raw]<br /> [catpath] should be [termpath-raw]</p> <h3>For User Patterns</h3> <p>(I don't think there are any changes here other than the -raw change.)</p> <h3>For Taxonomy Patterns</h3> <p>(I don't think there are any changes here other than the -raw change.)</p> <p><br id="bulk_generation_new"></p> <h2>How Bulk Generate differs from the old Bulk Update</h2> </p> <p>Now the Bulk Generation feature simply creates aliases for objects which are not currently aliased and it only does this for a small number in each execution. Ok, here goes ...</p> <p>Pathauto has a nice way of defining path naming rules for content types. These paths are stored in the database as aliases. Good. But how about NOT storing any of these paths in the database. Just "hook" into Drupal to generate a path on the fly based on the pathauto ruleset.</p> <p>Upon saving or updating any node, the pathauto "rules" would be checked to make sure there is not already content that "owns" that path based on its title. If there is already a piece of content that will generate that path based on its title, then redisplay the edit form and show a message -- "A node or category has already reserved this title, please choose another unique title."</p> <p>So, it's a strict check to make sure all titles are unique on the site. If all node titles/categories can have unique titles then you can (maybe?) do this sort of thing with paths on the fly. Some sites will not want this type of restriction on unique titles, but in many cases it's good to not have duplicate H1 titles across a site.</p> <p>So, just throwing this out for discussion. I'm not sure if there are hooks that could be used for this sort of thing -- need to do more digging. I fear the path lookup is deep in the Drupal core and not accessible. Don't want to use javascript like urlify since it won't work for search engines. It should be relatively stable and feature complete with the 4.7 version (or a little better).</p> <p>The second was to create a new <a href="http://drupal.org/node/129349">development branch for 5.x-2.x</a> which is where I committed 10 patches that had been sitting in the queue. There may be some "fallout" from all these changes, but I think it's generally headed in the right direction.</p> <p>I do request that those of you interested in pathauto will test out the new version to help make sure that it's good.</p> <p>The major goal of the 5.x--2 version is to look for new features to implement and get rid of functionality that I don't want to maintain such as the <a href="http://drupal.org/node/91105">listing page/index alias</a> functionality. The biggest part of the work I hope to get done is twofold: 1) use <a href="http://drupal.org/project/token">token module</a> for all the patterns and 2) using something like <a href="http://drupal.org/project/selenium">selenium</a> to implement the <a href="http://groups.drupal.org/node/2557">test plan for pathauto</a> that I've been writing (note - please help edit that!).</p> <p>So, that's about it. My future sites need simple URLs in the style of <b>about.com</b> wherein each subject or content type is assigned a unique subdomain (one site, many dynamic subdomains like <a href="http://dogs.about.com" title="http://dogs.about.com">http://dogs.about.com</a>, <a href="http://cats.about.com" title="http://cats.about.com">http://cats.about.com</a>).</p> <p>All incoming subdomain links are directed to the base folder where an HTACCESS file does an internal URL re-write (no redirects) for Drupal. This part is easy for me so this is NOT a question about DNS or HTACCESS.</p> <p>What I need to know is how to get Drupal/Path-auto etc. to generate (alias?) links using my pattern? I hope I'm just missing something obvious. Does the "alias" hold an entire URL or just the path part?</p> <p>I've searched around in the forums and the other subdomain questions seem to deal with DNS, HTACCESS, redirecting etc. and not how to get Drupal to create links using the pattern.
