Meeting in November

Hi guys,

how about a meeting this November? Spoke to Albert, our office with good chance could be available in Leith, and there is a nice pub with wifi nearby too. I would propose the last week of November, solely on the selfish reason that i will be away the week before. What do you think?

Set-up Scotland Drupal site

To allow people to learn from each other

First thing is for all of us to communicate

Have blog available for each person so people can post interesting things with comments

Have forum to allow folk to get in touch with others and post interesting things. For instance "I have an idea for a module can someone else help?"

Social networking should be facilitated

Need marketplace for jobs in Scotland

Have a better profile page that allows people to say what they have done

Jacob, Keith, Duvien, Andy volunteered some time towards setting this up.

Need to split into groups about this. Duvien is a themer, Keith is a programmer

Need meeting group to meet and demo sites and tell others how they did things.

Management of the group was discussed and it was suggested three or so “admins” could ensure the group keeps to objectives, is inclusive and represents the community.

Rob to check out Edinburgh University meeting facility.

Alan to check out Napier University meeting facility

Any Zen Themers

Hi again,

not really sure what happening with this group at the moment but I'm needing some face to face advice from someone if they have some time. I've been messing around with blocks and tpl files but still a site I constructed still has Drupal written all over it and I want to break free of that mould.

I'm messing around with Zen and need someone to handhold me in forming the initial layouts and styles, so any CSS people who have used Zen would be ideal.

In return... well I'm sure something can be worked out, contact me here or privately.

Thanks
Keith

April Drupal meet at The Forest

Hello all,

I'm a volunteer at The Forest, the venue for the upcoming (next Monday evening) Scottish Drupal Users Meeting. I'm currently moving The Forest's website (http://theforest.org.uk) from Joomla to Drupal 6 and was wondering if the members of this group would be interested in lending a hand by helping with thoughts on both the organization and implementation of the new site (currently http://theforest.org.uk/drupal). I also know that the admin for Indymedia Scotland (http://scotland.indymedia.org/) is working on porting their site to Drupal 6 and shall hopefully be coming along to the meeting as well.

Some information on The Forest; "The Forest is a volunteer-run, self-funded, independent, not-for-profit arts space located in the centre of Edinburgh. It is available to all people, is funded by its vegetarian cafe and run according to a working group structure using consensus decision-making techniques - this is a flat participatory system, which makes it easy for anyone to get involved. It is also a registered charity."

P.S. Just in case anyone wasn't aware, there is internet access available on three machines in The Forest's Action Room (where the meeting is to be held), plus there's also an open wi-fi point (and a hub if you so need and bring cables).

Thanks for your time,
TinyMCE

I found this screencast a great help when I was trying to configure TinyMCE on my site...

Be warned that part of the cast won't work in 5.6 because of a bug within the core filter module so you'll need to upgrade to 5.7

Drupal Users Meeting, Tuesday 29 January 2008 - Feedback

Here is the feedback from the first Scotland Drupal Users meeting in Edinburgh

Attendees

I have been using a site called bubbl.us that allows you to create mindmaps for free and share them with others so I thought I would do one for all the people who attended, if I have left you off the list can you mail me with your details so I can update the mindmap. Also with the sharing of the mindmaps I thought that would be a good way to put the demos together and get people to add their questions etc. If you want to share the sheets then create an account with www.bubbl.us and my user name there is DaughterofHell if you want to add me to your friends so i can share the sheets with you

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/705/bubblusdrupaljanuarymeewr7.jpg

Kerry - Can you alter the MindMap a little please, my handle here ( however obscure ) is WeeJockPooPongMcPlop not ThePlop as thats just plain silly ! - Blackadder, thank the heavens! - Keith

Topics for Demos/Presentations

Here is a list of topics in no particular order of what people would like to see demonstrated or presented during the future meetings.

Installations, do's and don'ts, backups and Upgrades

Hand coding modules

Adapting Profiles

Search Engine Optimisation

CSS and Theming

Security

Hints and Tips

Form Processing and Forms API

Image Galleries

CCK

Caching

E-Commerce

Taxonomy

Path Auto

Form Processing and Forms API

Screencasts

Services

Audio

CiviCRM

Third Party Integration ie dotproject, pmwiki etc

Groups Modules

Events Module

Venue

Unfortunately the room we were in the forest cafe had no wifi but I will go and speak to them about a proper space with wifi acces, so for those of you who want to volunteer to do demos/presentations can you give me a list of your requirements, it may be difficult to try and get free space on a regular basis but will do my best. Hopefully once things get started we could have a look at venues in Glasgow and have them rotated between Edinburgh and Glasgow

Volunteers for Demos/Presentations

Can you put your name down here if you would like to do demos/presentations during the meetings

I am happy to contribute to the group bhy sharing my experience of a local install of Drupal, tried IIS and Apache and I now know which I prefer. - Keith

AjK: I'm happy to come along and talk about the work of the security team and security in general, hand coding modules, caching, hints and tips, in fact pretty much anything from the new Drupal 6 release and coding to Drupal internals and module development in general. One thing I'm not is a themer although I know what goes into coding for themes, I just can't draw graphics to save my life! ;) Also, as a Drupal.Org Contrib CVS administrator I can also talk people through the beginners challenges of using CVS for Drupal. --Andy

Volunteers for One to One sessions

As there is a few beginners in the group, ie me and Andy, I thought it would be good if anyone wanted to do some demos on a one to one basis save having the rest of the group go some basic stuff that they already know. So if you would be up for that then please put your name down here.

AjK (but please get in touch first, I often work in various places around the USA so am not always available to make the meet-ups in Edinburgh) --Andy

Structure of the Meetings

I would like some discussion around this as to what people would prefer, as I know people have to get back to Glasgow and other places so was thinking along the lines of

demos/presentations

one to one sessions

Critiquing the members sites time permitting

Times of the Meetings

Can you let me know whether you would want to meet earlier than 7.30pm as I know some people had got their early anyway if you could give me some preferences as to what you would like would help in the planning the venues so for instance was 7.30 - 10 okay or would you prefer earlier start times

Suggestions

As there was a wiki here I was wondering whether you would be interested in setting up a page for your website with your wants and needs and possible demonstrations you would like to see, that way others who have not attended the meeting might like to add with their experiences and hints and tips and we could keep a record of what has been achieved and end results.

Okay I think that's all I have in relation to the meeting and just wanted to say I had a really good time chatting to you all and finding out about what everyone was up to. Look forward to good discussions and good future meetings

How to share knowledge in Scotland? 2

Thanks Andy for starting this issue, I've created a 'story post' for this discussion so we can all comment as the first post was a wiki which doesnt allow comments. I think someone needs to undertake a full due diligence of the pros & cons of both running an online site and/or using the tools available within the Drupal groups platform. I can see a ton of issues and am quite happy to undertake this task. This is a Drupal group specific to topics regarding 'Drupal groups' and I intend to chat to this groups manager about future developments and existing issues and functionality.

Im guessing that some people seem to think that if we have a dedicated site then it would allow us all to play about with Drupal but if we do go along the route of a dedicated site then any interaction should be controlled. All of us should have a test localhost Drupal installation on our personal PC or laptops so we can all play & test Drupal without breaking other peoples work. (Note..We should perhaps cover installing a drupal test server for those who dont know how to do it, at a future meeting, anyone want to take this on?)

Unless anyone objects I will report back to the group on this subject at the next meeting, meanwhile please comment.

PS If anyone especially wants to help me to do this then pipe-up as I would be quite happy to collaborate.

How to share knowledge in Scotland?

I've had a quick look round the other groups here and can't see anyone creating content for others to share. The best I have seen is a beginners group where they have a "tag list" block on the right hand side. It seems to me that the best thing would be to create a simple Drupal site for us all to add content? Gets some hands on and allows us to all contribute our knowledge towards something constructive. The thing that may be an issue is where do we host this? In previous groups I've seen folk lose interest and if one person runs/controls things then that may be lost. My hosting provider www.siteground.com gives two years Drupal hosting for £34.

What do others think?

Hey it was a pleasure to have met you tonight and everyone else. How does a hosting company survive on that low cost???

Anyway, i think it is a good idea to run and administer our own site for the Scottish Drupal Group and will be happy to host this on my own server if needed.

We have a great mixed of people in this group you can certain contribute one way or the other, Designers / coders / networkers / whatever, i'm sure we can all chip-in to create and maintain the site :)

How to test and demonstrate Drupal on a USB stick

The following allows you to run a test version of a Drupal site from a USB stick. This allows you to take it along and show customers. For me it allows me to test out various things without breaking the main site.

download the software from here http://www.ratatosk.net/software/onastick/

unzip then click on start, bat in root directory. Its as easy as that. Check the readme file for default username and password. The biggest problem I had was getting MySQL talking to Drupal - my web host does all that stuff automatically.

Hi folks,

I'm a web designer working for a large company based in Glasgow, Scotland. I'm in the process of learning Drupal to build my next generation of websites and have got stuck! (mainly when it comes to views/arguments) and could really do with spending a day or two with someone who knows what they are doing.

I'd really looking for someone based in Scotland - i'll pay travel and an hourly fee. It may even be possible that there is future work - e.g if you are any good i'll farm the work out to you - i've another 5 or so sites to build so there is plenty that will need done.

I look forward to hearing from you. Please email me at martin.johnstone@morrisfurniture.co.uk

Regards,

Martin Johnstone

Who in Scotland uses Drupal?

Well for one, I do. I am a web developer for a scottish music company, who is using Drupal to create our next generation websites.

I'd like to see how many people on here use Drupal, and if we can work together on organising a group meeting either in Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Leave your comments and join the group!
