Fremont Coffee worked well

lucidvein's picture

Fremont Coffee worked well for the last meeting, I'd be up for trying that again. Might be tight if we had a large gathering but I'm sure we could take over one of the rooms.

Downstairs at the Elliot Bay Book Company might also be a nice place to try sometime in the future...

I'd prefer somewhere more central. Elliot bay bookstore sounds good, or a public library. Somebody mentioned the Richard Hugo house at the last meeting, and that sounds good too.

Fremont then Elliot Bay

It looks like the majority is happy to go with Fremont Coffee this time and it is getting close to our meeting so let's meet in Fremont. Let's plan for Elliot Bay for our February meeting. Richard Hugo House is a possibility although we did have wireless issues there during Drupal Camp. I think that was due to the fact that there were so many of us trying to get online, but I'm wondering if anyone has had a good wireless experience at RHH.

With the snow outside I'm wondering if we should have a cancellation policy in place. The forecast calls for more snow on Thursday. I think its important that we get together regularly but I don't think it is worth getting into a car accident. What do you think? Should we have a basic policy like if the roads are bad, then we should cancel or reschedule?

Developers: have you checked out the new group drupal-dojo. They have IRC (at freenode #drupal-dojo) and are graciously offering weekly classes for developers to learn some of the details of drupal development. There is a lot of activity to the group so it can be a bit overwhelming at times, but just keep digging through and you will find the golden nuggets! Check it out:

Regarding weather

GregoryHeller's picture

I just checked and it should be in the 40s on thusday with a chance of flurries or other percipitation.

I was out driving today after 3:30 pm and until 5:30 and the roads were fine.

I think the cancellation policy should be this:
If you are thinking of bailing due to weather, log on here and post a comment that you are not going to venture out. Check the node before you leave work or home and see what the consensus is. If it looks like no one is going to show, then we'll cancell and reschedule for some time in the future.

FYI, Fremont Coffee has instituted a system that requires that you purchase something to get internet access, they give you a one-ff user access code. All you need to buy is tea, or coffee or a sandwich.

If anyone wants to show up a little early and claim some seats in the back, it took me about 30 minutes or so to get us that big table. I might not be able to get there early this week because I am starting a move into a new apartment (which will be large enough for small drupal gatherings and will be located on capital hill).

I'd like to come, and

I'd like to come, and Fremont works well for me. I've got a standing 3rd Thursday commitment & a funeral to fly to the next day, but I hope to at least show my face and have a chance to meet people this month.

Topic Suggestions

Fremont Coffee works for me.

Although CCK was covered at Seattle Drupal Camp, I would love to review how it works again. In particular, it would be nice to know when CCK is appropriate vs. creating a new node type or maybe explaining the difference between node types and CCK.

I have been working with taxonomy and views. I would be willing to show how I got started with those two items if people are interested.

Side Note for PHP developers: did you know that the Vancouver PHP Association is hosting a PHP conference in February. It's cheap ($150 CAN) and I think well worth it. I went to the last one in 2004 and the speakers were great. Plus it was a smaller conference which created a relaxed, personal feel to the event. Great for learning!

CCK review indeed

lucidvein's picture

Drupal 5.0 has been released: http://drupal.org/drupal-5.0

I'm also in need of some CCK review and QA. What I really want is a way to dump csv data into defined CCK fields. Not sure if the import/export module will work or if I should just add the data directly into mySQL.

Thanks for the PHP Conference link. I might be able to attend that and would enjoy a little time in Vancouver as well.

See you all Thursday...

Hello.

Just so I'm on the right page, we can show up to these gatherings without previously declaring our planned attendance, yes? :)

Yes, just show

Start Time

lucidvein's picture

What time is the meeting tonight? Usually we gather between 5:30 or 6pm, but the posting has no set start time.

I'll be heading over to the Tractor Tavern for a show if anyone wants to continue on after Fremont Coffee closes at 8pm.

that's funny...i swear it said 6pm before

robeano's picture

I thought it used to show 18:00 at the top of the page after the date. Anyway, I will be getting there around 5:45 pm to try to secure an area. Let's say the official start time is 6 pm.

Notes From Meeting and New Location Found

robeano's picture

My notes are sparse from the meeting on January 18th, but here goes.

There were quite a few of us: Sean, AJ, Gregory, Julie, John, John, Jessie, and me. We took care of setting up meetings for the next two months:

February 21, 6 pm, Elliott Bay Bookstore
March, 6 pm, Location TBD

Topics included:
* CCK
* 5.0
* Views Theming
* Detailed Work Questions including Panels, Roles and moderating content

With CCK, we talked about importing and the trickiness of making sure you import data into the node and node_revisions tables. When choosing between CCK and a custom node module an important concept to consider is upgrading. If you write custom code, then you will have to deal with changing it to work in future versions of Drupal. We also discussed how to use CCK when you don't want a Title field. We were unable to figure out a way around it. It seems the Title field is required, but it would be nice if they made it optional in the future.

That's all I have.

New Location: I went to a PHP meeting yesterday and they had it at a very nice location:

Espresso Vivace Alley 24
227 Yale Ave N
Seattle, WA 98109
Telephone 206.388.5164
Open daily 6 am until 11 pm.
http://www.espressovivace.com/intro.html

It's across the street from REI. They have a separate room with a door that we can reserve (you sign up on the calendar in the store). It is a larger location, centrally located, and they serve coffee and beer but very little food (they had one scone when I was there). I think we should have our March meeting there. Sound good?

Thanks,

Robin
