Teaching the meaning of Social Networking
I was(am) working on a drupal based site http://iputech.com Its a student network site where we the college students can share knoweldge, resources, find likely minded people for our projects. This is social networking among college students.
However in my failed attempt to make the university understand the meaning and importance of "social networking" all my hope to get support from them for the site seems diminished.
I am still a kid and can't really manupilate people(specially old people with their own firm believes and unchangable nature)
I request for some punch lines to be submitted to university again, so that they can get to know what the SN means and how much it is needed for this generation of students.

It is very difficult to get some people to see the benefits of social networking. Many people are just afraid what identify thieft, uncertainty of the internet and I guess trusting people.
Just keep planting seeds. It will start to grow on people. I have been at this for a year now and am finally starting to change some people minds.
On another note, I like some of the features that you have on your site. The newsletter feature. Are you using simplenews? I just can not seem to get mine working properly. Any advice on set up?
Thanks and all the best to you.

Yes, that is simplenews module.( I haven't tested it. but I am not getting any errors with it)
There might be problems with the email. Try services like google apps( privacy su#ks) or windows custom domain to have your email hosted by them.
With this you need smtp module.
If there is any help you need please feel free to ask.

Hi Himanshu, First off, if
Hi Himanshu,
First off, if you want to influence the Powers That Be, you need to let go of the "I am still a kid and can't really manipulate people" philosophy. Today's youth have more power to manipulate their environment than ever before. Once you embrace that sense of empowerment, it's just a matter of technology and tactics to get you to your goal. :-)
For those who don't understand social networking because they're just not that familiar with it, I would highly recommend getting them a copy of Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies (the audiobook is great for those who commute or don't have a lot of spare time for reading). It's written by the folks at Forrester Research and does an excellent job not only of showing how ground-up movements are having a huge impact on the world, but how any organization can figure out where they fit in to the whole mess.
I would also highly recommend Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything as an excellent resource for understanding the real power behind social networking (among other things). Many of the themes in these books are the similar, but they take different approaches that may be easier to digest for different kinds of people.
I've lost count of the number of copies of both of these books I've purchased as gifts for people. Not all of them read them when they get them, but those who do almost always come away from it with a greatly expanded understanding of what social networks and other collaboration tools mean to their line of work.
