DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANIZATION: The SUNY COIL Center, http://www.suny.edu/global/coil, is a leader in the emerging field of globally networked learning, which is a new teaching and learning methodology that fosters exchange between faculty and students with peers in other countries by using Internet-based communication tools. COIL has developed a proven approach for supporting professors to develop co-equal multi-cultural online learning environments which emphasize experiential collaborative learning between American students and those in other countries.
Project:
As part of its national and international leadership role in globally networked learning, COIL is seeking to undertake a complete redesign of its website and internet presence. The new website will serve as an international hub for educators to share experiences as well as technical and pedagogical best practices related to collaborative online international learning. The website will be built utilizing the social networking platform of a major CMS (e.g. Drupal Commons or Buddy Press). The goal of the site is to create an online community that fosters dialogue and collaboration amongst diverse users from many cultural and disciplinary backgrounds. The site will also include interactive training modules that may require custom coding. The projected launch date for the website is May 2012.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
We are seeking an experienced consultant/development team to design and construct a highly interactive online community of practice website. Duties will include:
- Utilize User-Centered Design concepts to identify and create feasible project strategies and goals
- Design and implementation of COIL’s new website layout and user interface
- Installation, setup and optimization of chosen CMS platform and associated module
- Customization of website theme to create visually compelling and easy to use user interface
- Development of additional content types needed beyond those provided out of the box
- Support development and maintenance of integration between site and COIL’s social media presence
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Extensive web development experience, preferably including projects in an educational context
- Deep web client side skills and experience including Javascript, CSS, HTML, and PHP
- Proven experience creating user-friendly solutions with leading CMS software (e.g. Drupal or WordPress)
- Experience developing online communities in Drupal, Drupal Commons and/or BuddyPress
- Demonstrated creativity using social networking techniques to foster website interest and activity
- Ability to work independently as well as collaborate effectively with various project stakeholders
- Knowledge or a strong interest in international education and cross-cultural exchange is a plus
- Preference for individuals and teams in the New York City area.
We seek to have a development team in place by mid-February, and the site operational 90 days later.
