This is a one-year position. Position may be renewed pending funding following the first year.
OVERVIEW
The Database Analyst I position, with the Data Services Core (DSC) of the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), will play a key role in creating online/offline Case Management Systems for a number of long term projects within the Social Sciences here at Duke. The hire will work in conjunction with researchers and IT staff to 1) Support projects where long term tracking of individuals and recording multiple interactions is necessary; 2) Build web and database tools to collect necessary data; 3) Create reporting mechanisms and tools to display summary data from collected records; 4) Maintain and/or transition existing Case Management Systems to bring uniformity and efficiency to the existing setups; and 5) Seek out better tools and methods as technologies evolve in this field. Additionally, this position will be expected to provide professional recommendations on best practices of Case Management to faculty and researchers. This position reports directly to the associate director of the DSC within the Social Science Research Institute and indirectly to the DSC faculty director and SSRI directors. This position complements other positions within the Data Services Core.
WORK PERFORMED
Develop databases, web interfaces and offline tools:
Design, implement, and maintain databases for tracking participants over multi-year time frames. Work with project coordinators to develop and maintain Case Management Systems. Work may involve multiple database models, web development and report generation. Monitor database performance and provide tuning and query support and optimization as needed. Ensure that regulations and policies concerning data security and privacy are met at all times, including but not limited to HIPAA and FERPA.
Consult and advise:
Collaborate with researchers to determine the correct solution to their data collection needs. Work with the SSRI Education and Data cores to create best practice methodologies in regards to survey design and interface usability.
Other:
Supervise Data Core Services staff as required. Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple projects highly desired. Project management skills a plus. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Seeking candidate with the following experience and knowledge:
•Experience with site building and development of Content Management Systems (e.g. Drupal or Custom CMSs)
•Experience with a scripting language such as JavaScript, jQuery, Python etc.
•Experience with a major open-source RDBMS, preferably MySQL (PostGres or SQLServer is acceptable).
•Experience with designing and implementing Case Management Systems
•Experience with a document-oriented Case Management DB (e.g. CouchDB).
•Knowledge of major operating systems, programming languages, database systems, and communication protocols.
•Ability to work in teams and in cooperation with individuals and groups.
•Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
The following skills/experiences are beneficial:
•Knowledge of MS Access and/or Filemaker Pro
•A command of SQL with an understanding of advanced elements of SQL (e.g., sub-queries, views, integrity enforcement)
•An interest and/or knowledge of HTML5
•Experience with Social Science research projects.
•Experience with data visualization (software, theory etc…)
•Experience with online survey tools and/or survey design.
•An understanding of case management theory: acquisition, management, and administration of digital data; An understanding of the principles of metadata schemas.
EDUCATION
Work requires a bachelor's degree preferably in information science, computer science, or a computer-related field.
EXPERIENCE
Work requires two years of progressive programming or database administration experience to include design, implementation, tuning, backup, recovery, modification and reorganization of relational databases for a complex computer network.
