Help: Need your input for DrupalAtlanta.com site redesign...

As some of you may already know DrupalAtlanta.com is in the process of redesigning their website. The organizers of the project hope to use the site redesign as a working laboratory to expose new members on how to build a Drupal site from the ground-floor. Look out for meeting updates about the monthly Drupal workshops being conducted!

However, first and foremost we need your input. We are in the process of defining the requirements and goals of the site and are looking for feedback on such things as:

What type of features and functionality should be included?

Have you seen any other user group sites that we could emulate or learn “best practices” from?

What type of content would cause you to take notice and visit the site regularly?

Any ideas on aesthetics and the overall look and feel?

This is a chance for you to get involved and let your voice be heard. We need volunteers who are willing to help with generating content, graphic design, and experienced Drupal developers/themers willing to mentor new users. Please share your ideas at an upcoming meeting or email dave dot terry at mediacurrent dot com by July 31st with your suggestions.

Thank you,
Dave Terry
Georgia Podcast Network redesign is live!

We have finally gone live with our redesign of the Georgia Podcast Network! For a rundown of what's new from an end user standpoint, check out our announcement blog post.

GAPN is based on Drupal 5.7, and makes heavy use of the following modules: CCK, Views, Workflow-ng, FeedAPI, ImageCache, Usernode, Bio, Fivestar, and Voting API. That's not a full list, but the site leans on those the most.

Additionally, we built a custom theme and wrote several custom modules to get things working just the way we wanted them to. In writing these modules, we built custom Drupal integration for getID3, SWFUpload, and the JW Media Player.

Hope you like the site! I'll be happy to answer any "how did you do that?" questions if you have them.

(Sorry I haven't been to the last few meetings. Atlanta-to-Alpharetta at that hour is just brutal.)

Atlanta Meeting: March 2008

This next meeting will be in a new format, where we work in small groups on individual projects of interest. Many have expressed interest in having a hands-on meeting where we actually play around with Drupal.

If you are new to Drupal, this is the meeting where you can get some hands-on assistance.

If you are experienced with Drupal, this is the meeting where you can team with other experienced Drupal hacks to experiment.

There should be something of interest for all!

We have also an tentative arrangement for one of our members to provide a 30 minute overview of the recent Boston Drupalcon.

The location is the same as always: 5 Seasons restaurant on Old Milton Parkway, Alpharetta, GA. (exit 10 off of hwy 400).

Drupal Developer Needed for straight forward implementation | Q. Wild & Co.

My fast growing strategic interactive marketing firm is in need of a Drupal developer for a client project that is ready to begin and needs to be completed over the next 4-6 weeks.

The project is straight forward with no customization. Its entirely off the shelf stuff. Design is being provided by a 3rd party. A requirements document is already complete.

We are seeking an honest, trustworthy, experienced Drupal developer that is looking for the same in a front end business partner. This client is one of many---the pipeline is full and so if all goes well there is room for lots of additional work.

Please respond with:

URLs of previous work

Rate

Start Date available

Contact Information

Atlanta area preferred but not required.

Thanks.
Josh

IN-DEPTH DRUPAL: ARCHITECTURE AND DEBUGGING

Mike Schinkel of NewClarity and Atlanta Web Entrepreneurs will be killing two birds with one stone by demonstrating:

1.) The underlying architecture of Drupal including CCK and Views, and
2.) How to debug Drupal 5.x using PhpED from NuSphere.

Mike will cover how Drupal menus, blocks, and URL aliases work, how Drupal's "hook" system works in modules, how themes are used by Drupal, and Mike will also provide a high-level overview of building modules in Drupal. He will demonstrate all of these aspects by literally tracing through a basic Drupal application using the PhpIDE debugger. Mike will provide handouts for the presentation with diagrams for the PHP-challenged so that everyone can follow along.

Of course this will be an intermediate to advanced-level presentation for people without programming skills, and a beginner-to-intermediate level presentation for those with programming skills. While PHP-level programmers will get the most out of the presentation it will still have great value for non-programming Drupal admins. Even if you don't ever plan to program in PHP, knowing a little bit about Drupal "under the covers" can make it much easier to build Drupal application and add 3rd party modules.

Prerequisites for the 7pm meetup including having actually installed and configured a basic Drupal 5.x system and having enduser-admin understanding of Content, Content Types, Menus, Blocks, Themes, and URL Aliases as well as having installed and configured CCK and Views.

Many thanks to and Andre Lunde, for leading last month's discussion on external Web services, and Drupal.

The location and time are the same: 7-9pm, 5 Seasons restaurant in Alpharetta, GA., on Old Milton Parkway, about one mile east of GA 400 off of exit 10.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=3655+Old+Milton+Pky,+Alpharetta,...

Come out and join us on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, as we explore Drupal

Drupal Atlanta's November Meeting

This month's meeting will focus on adapting Drupal to mobil devices--i.e. cell phones, PDAs, pocket computers.

First we will discuss the topic at an architectural level, and then depending on questions, we will drill some into the details. This discussion is based on a project that is currently under development. The project has required some key module customization, as well as multisite implementation. It seems like a meaty project, containing information of interest to each member.

Andrew Lunde will lead this discussion.

We also need suggestion for future meeting topics, starting January 2008.

Remember--Drupal Atlanta will not meet during December 2007.

Many thanks to Doug Bock and Zack Harkey, for leading last month's discussion on external Web services, and Drupal.

Visitors will be able to browse through the site to learn more about the program.

Artists will be able to submit their songs online for review. Artists will have the option of paying $10 for standard submission or $20 for a premium. This functionality will be handled by the Paypal Node module.

Judges will then vote on the song nodes and submit written reviews for premium song submissions. Judges will also need to be able to flag whether a songs has been reviewed.

Administrator will be able to create new mixtapes for artists to submit songs for. Admin will also be able to listen to submissions and flag songs that will be included on mixtapes.

This website is primarily geared toward hip-hop and R&B artists. I would like the site to have a clean design with an urban feel and room for advertising our other websites via the ad module.

A functioning example of the site is currently up at www.makinitmag.com/onthegrind.

Drupal Atlanta Meeting: Theming Your Site

This month's meeting will focus on Theming your Drupal site. Theming has been a long awaited topic. Although Drupal is rich with functionality, it has a fairly plain (out of box) user interface. In order to create a truly usable site, Drupal developers need to know how to design an attractive user interface for Drupal. I'm looking forward to this session because I have a few sites on the www which have not yet been themed, and for me, that's the next step in the development of these sites.

Kent Lester will lead this month's session on Drupal theming.

The location and time are the same: 7-9pm, 5 Seasons restaurant in Alpharetta, GA., on Old Milton Parkway, about one mile east of GA 400 off of exit 10.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=3655+Old+Milton+Pky,+Alpharetta,...

Thanks to Rusty Tanton of Georgia Podcast Network for demonstrating how to upload video and audio Podcasts to Drupal at our last meeting. You can view his Podcast at:

http://www.gapodcastnetwork.com/blogs/rusty-tanton/2007/08/26/podcasting...

Come out and join us on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, as we explore Drupal.

Drupal Atlanta Meeting Tuesday 7/17/07

Last month we had a great meeting where we discussed the installation of Drupal on a USB Thumb drive for site development purposes. Many Thanks to Ben Benone for an informative presentation.

This month's meeting will take the next logical step and demonstrate how to migrate the site from the laptop server (Xampp) to the live server in the WW Web.

Tomorrow's Agenda

Drupal: From Development to Business

Moving a Drupal site from a Development environment to a live (business) site.

Bring your laptops and follow along as we demonstrate how to set up a Drupal site on your laptop, and then migrate it to a live server.

This allows you to leverage the time spent developing a Drupal site. Once your site prototype is developed, it can be used repeatedly as the core for new sites.

The goal is for each participant to leave the meeting with a functioning Drupal site on their laptop, and to understand how to migrate that site to a server on the WW Web.

The location and time are the same: 7-9pm, 5 Seasons restaurant in Alpharetta, GA., on Old Milton Parkway, about one mile east of GA 400. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=3655+Old+Milton+Pky,+Alpharetta,...

This is the one meeting you don't want to miss.

They are here as a wiki-- feel free to correct anything I messed up.

Installing Drupal onto a Thumb Drive

Step 1) Download Necessary files.
Download the XAMPP ZIP archive (NOT installer) from:
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html#641

Download latest version of Drupal from:
http://drupal.org/

Step 2) Place XAMPP on USB Key.
Extract the XAMPP ZIP archive onto your local hard drive. It will create a XAMPP directory with a lot of files into it. Copy this XAMPP directory to your USB key. You should now have a directory on your key called XAMPP.

Step 3) Start and Test XAMPP.
XAMPP will work right out of the box, so give it a try. Open the XAMPP directory on your USB key and run xampp-control.exe
A XAMPP control panel window will appear.
To the right of Apache click start. A green “Running” should now appear to the left of that button.
To the right of MySQL click start. A green “Running” should now appear to the left of that button.
You have now started Apache (your webserver) and MySQL (your database server).
Open up your web browser and enter http://localhost/ as your location. If you see the XAMPP web page your web server is successfully running!

Step 4) Tighten up the security a bit.
After going to http://localhost/ click English, and then on the left hand sidebar click Security.
You should see several red “Unsecure” warnings.
Below the warning should be text that says:

To fix the problems for mysql, phpmyadmin and the xampp directory simply use
=> http://localhost/security/xamppsecurity.php <= [allowed only for localhost]

Click that link and enter a password for mysql root. Remember this password!
After entering the password, click “Password changing”. You should get a message telling you that “The root password was successfully changed. Please restart MYSQL for loading these changes!”.

As it requested, you should restart MySQL: open your XAMPP control panel again, and click “Stop” next to MySQL. After it has stopped, reclick “Start”.

Back in your web browser re-click “Security” on the left side. You should now be more secure. It will tell you that your pages are accessible to everyone on the network – this is ok since you are likely behind a firewall so they are really only accessible to people on your local network. PHP Not running in “Safe Mode” is also OK.

Step 5) Create Database
In your web browser goto:
http://localhost/phpmyadmin
login with the “root” username and password you set above.
Scroll down to “Create New Database”, enter “Drupal” and click “Create”.

Step 6) Install Drupal.
First copy the Drupal files onto your USB Key. Do this by moving the Drupal directory that you extracted earlier into the /xampp/htdocs directory on your USB key.

Once this is done, you should have a directory called /xampp/htdocs/drupal on your USB key. If your directory is named something else (ex: Drupal5.1) rename it to “drupal” for the purposes of this demo.

Now, goto:
http://localhost/drupal/install.php
to Install Drupal.
Leave the database type as mysql, enter “Drupal” as the database name and enter “root” and the password you chose earlier in the username and password fields.

After a bit of thinking, you should get a message confirming that your Drupal Installation is complete!

Goto http://localhost/drupal/ to use your new site!

Step 7) Important to Remember!
Prior to removing your USB key you MUST turn off your web and database server first! If you fail to do this you run a high risk of corrupting your database.

To turn off your web and mysql server, open up your XAMPP control panel, click “Stop” next to Apache and MySQL and then click the “Exit” button.

It is then safe to remove your USB key.

ADDITIONAL ADVICE
I am adding this section to hold pointers that anyone can append to the end. I am using a USB key based website a lot now, and will throw tidbits in here as I come across them.

MySQL Configuration
Since this is intended to be a mobile setup, putting a my.ini file in your windows directory (as is customary for advanced MySQL config settings) doesn't quite cut it. You would have to do this for every computer you worked on. For this reason XAMPP overrides this when starting mysql and points it to a configuration file conveniently held right in your xmapp directory on your USB key. So... if you are looking for your my.ini file in a XAMPP setup, it is actually called my.conf and is located in xampp\mysql\bin.

"MySQL server has gone away" error
This error: "ERROR 2006 (HY000) at line 366: MySQL server has gone away" is likely because you are trying to restore a large DB backup (>3MB) or do something else that requires a lot of information to be transfered. This is because XAMPP defaults mysql to be configured with a fairly low packet size limit. I found this limit far too small for my usage, so I bumped it from 1 MB to 16. Here is how: (1) goto your my.conf file (see above). (2) find the line that says "max_allowed_packet" and make it say "max_allowed_packet = 16M". That should do it.

Reminder, Drupal Meeting Tomorrow--Volunteer Needed

Just a reminder. The May meeting is NOT this evening, rather it it tomorrow evening. However, it will be at the same time and location.

We have two presentations planned, but only one presenter. It seems that at the last meeting, someone volunteered to present the beginners' workshop, but must have forgotten. So at this late date, we need a presenter for the beginners' workshop.

The topic is : "A review of interesting Drupal Web sites".

On the DrupalAtlanta.com Web site, members have posted candidate Drupal Web sites for us to select from. The presenter would simply take a look at the Web sites already posted on DrupalAtlanta, and select about five that can be shown and discussed in about 20 minutes or less. As a group, we can discuss the different modules that are used, the theming, the functioning, and the business idea for some of these sites.

The objective is to give beginning Drupal users a concrete idea of the power and flexibility of Drupal. Perhaps some of the more experienced members will get a few new ideas for how to utilize Drupal on their next project.

So this workshop should not pose a challenge, even for an intermediate Drupal user.

Just bring your laptop to tomorrow's meeting with links to the sites you want to review.

Will anyone volunteer to lead this discussion?

I'd hate to see us have to cancel this workshop.

Question?? Contact me via contact form.
***CHANGE: Drupal Atlanta Next Meeting--May 23 (Wednesday)

The date for the Atlanta Drupal User's group meeting has changed.

The new date is Wednesday, May 23, 2007--thats next week on Wednesday.

The location and time are the same:
Time: 7-9pm
Location: 5 Seasons restaurant in Alpharetta, GA., on Old Milton Parkway, about one mile east of GA 400. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=3655+Old+Milton+Pky,+Alpharetta,...

This change was necessitated because our usual meeting room was not available next Tuesday.

The Steering Committee thought it better to change the date, rather than the location.

Hereafter- the meetings will revert to the normal 3rd Tuesday of the month.

And the Steering Committee has booked the meeting room for the remainder of the year.

The meeting schedule will soon be posted on DrupalAtlanta.com

Agenda: Two exciting and relevant presentations at each meeting.

One for beginners and one for advanced users.

First workshop:
This month we invite submissions of Drupal Web sites that you like. We will spend time looking at them and learning from them. This is a great opportunity for new users to learn the power and flexibility of Drupal.

Second workshop:
An introduction to theming a Drupal site.

Networking, introductions and placement of meal orders will begin at 7pm.
The first workshop will begin precisely at 7:15pm
There will be a concerted effort to adjourn the meeting at 9pm.
Optional networking will continue after meeting adjournment.
We encourage interested parties to come out and join our network. One never knows when the network of Drupal contacts will come in handy.

See you on Wednesday, May 23rd.

Feel free to contact Mal (via contact form) with questions.

Next Drupal Atlanta Meeting--OOps, My Mistake.

Well it turns out that this month has 5 Tuesdays instead of 4. So my usual method of selecting the next to last Tuesday of the month for meeting date, backfired and landed us on the 4th Tuesday this month.

Even today, I still hadn't noticed until Kent pointed it out.

So I hereby notify everyone that this month's meeting is NOT tomorrow (5/15/07), rather it is next Tuesday, 5/22/07. I hope that doesn't throw anyone off who wanted to attend, but can't attend on the 4th Tuesday.

Revised topics for presentation:

1) Beginners presentation: A study of selected/interesting Drupal sites. We'll see what we can learn from them.

2) Advanced presentations: Theming a Drupal Site.

Location: 5 Seasons Brew Restaurant. Each of these will be 45 minute presentations. The networking begins at 7pm. The presentations begin at 7:30pm sharp. The meeting will end at 9:30pm sharp.

Next Drupal Atlanta Meeting - Networking + Two Drupal Presentations

Drupal training in Nashville?

Does anyone know of any companies, individuals or groups offering Drupal training of any kind in the Nashville area? Tennessee? Kentucky? Southeastern US? I would like to present various training options for my employer. I am aware of the workshops that Lullabot puts on, but I would like to see if there are any options within driving distance of my day job in Nashville.

I am most interested in theming, design tweaking, and understanding the inner workings of the Drupal framework as a whole. In the future, I would like to be able to assist with module development.

Thanks for any pointers - I would appreciate any leads that you may have. Drupal is a great program with amazing potential. I hope to see it gain more traction in mainstream web development.

Drupal Atlanta Meeting - Summary

Our second Drupal Atlanta meeting saw several new faces and a few missing from the previous meeting. We've added a couple of Drupal developers with extensive coding experience, so that bodes well for the future.

Our first presentation was Installing Drupal 5.1 and it seemed to generate a lot of interest, even from some of the more experienced developers.

We agreed to the following procedural matters:

Until further notice, meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of each month at the 5Seasons. So, the next meeting will take place on April 17 at 7:30p.

A steering committee of 3-4 will hash out some of the more mundane procedural matters and present them to the group at future meetings for a vote.

Meetings will consist of a short procedural session, followed by two presentations: one for beginners, and one for intermediate/advanced Drupal users. In this way, we hope to meet the needs of all members.

Next month's presentations include:

Drupal 101: What do you do when faced with a blank canvas after installation? We'll cover frontpage design, taxonomy, Drupal specific terms, and optional modules.

Organic Groups: We'll cover one of the most popular modules for Drupal--organic groups, and how it allows you to set up different areas within your Drupal website for specific groups. (much like the groups.drupal.org site)

We hope to see you there!

Summary of our First Official Meeting

Summary provided courtesy of zoon_unit

Hello all Atlanta Drupal User's Group members.

Here are the minutes from our first meeting:

1) Meetings will be held on a monthly basis, the third Tuesday of every month at 5 Seasons North on Old Milton. The next meeting will be on March the 20th. The business meeting will start at 7:30p with "social hour" starting at 7p.

2) The general consensus is that meetings would incorporate a brief business agenda at 7:30 to be followed by a presentation or discussion. An "agenda leader" will be appointed for each meeting, or perhaps a series of meetings.

The agenda leader's prime responsibility to the keep the agenda moving along in an orderly fashion. The person making a presentation will be in charge of that part of the meeting. (perhaps also that meeting's agenda leader?)

3) The presentations at the early meetings will concentrate on orientation and installation of Drupal. As the group's overall skill level increases, later meetings will drill down into the more specialized topics of content, theming, php, and module development.

4) There was a general consensus that as the group matures, we may try to arrange break out groups or a regional Drupalcon where we can accommodate Drupal users throughout the Southeast.

5) Bob Pepalis has agreed to provide name tags for the members. (see attached member list) He also indicated that he may have a possible venue for future meetings if the group outgrows the 5 Seasons Meeting room.

Many thanks to Mal, Bob, and all the other members who helped to make this charter meeting a fantastic success! Happy Drupaling!

NOTE: If anyone has additions or corrections to the minutes, please email me. Thanks!

zoon_unit

The Atlanta Drupal Users Group is heating up! It looks like there will be a sizable crowd in attendance at our first official meeting. The skill sets run the gamut from new users, graphic designers, drupal site publishers, to PHP programmers, so it should lead to a lively and dynamic meeting.

The meeting is Thursday Feb 22, 2007, from 7:30pm til 9pm, at 5 Seasons North.

For directions, see the map here: 5 Seasons North on Old Milton rd in Alpharetta.
