Know of a good write-up on "Why Churches Should Use Open Source?"

bradwade's picture

I feel like I'm regularly finding myself needing to persuade churches on the benefits of using open source software (yes, most often Drupal but also OpenOffice and other programs). I always feel like I could have done a better job.

It would be great to have a well written short paragraph with perhaps links to one or more longer papers.

Who has this already? Should we create this?

Here's a paper that I wrote for a university class

A couple of years ago I was taking a class at the University of Toronto on the sociology of information. One of our assignments was to choose an information topic, a target group, and construct an information product to reach them. I chose churches (target) and the open source movement (topic). It's CC-licensed, so please feel free to adapt and improve it, but share alike!

I think you're looking for something much shorter than this, but maybe you'll find something in here that's useful.

Thanks for sharing your paper. I just finished reading it. I think there is definitely good stuff in there. I'm still processing it all and trying to figure out what I want to do/say. The audience that I'm thinking of is church pastors and other church employees/decision makers. Maybe the next step I will take is to make an outline of the best points from you paper I would want to include as well as other ideas I would want to communicate. Hmmm....

Anyway, thanks again for posting. Great resource.

This little booklet is also available on lulu, perhaps as an updated version. It is by Don Parris who is a part-time pastor and also pretty networked/involved in the open source world. I've been running into him around the Christian FOSS hide outs for many years now and remember when he first wrote it. Apparently, it has been a pretty popular resource. It is focused towards Linux I think. It's been years since I read it, but it may have some tidbits of interest for you.
