There appears to be no captioning ability with NodeStream. Please tell me this is wrong. If true, such lack of a basic journalistic feature would delete NS from my list of potential news platforms.

There are fields for this, they are just not accessible directly through the article interface right now. This will be fixed with the next release of the Media module.
Go to admin/content/file. You will see a list with all media that you have uploaded. Click edit on one of the files and you can add a caption and other meta data.
If you go to admin/structure/extensions, you can enable the possibility of showing adding image credit to a certain contributor as well.

Thanks for the answer. It will be more intuitive (for editors, at least) to offer the ability to add captions to photographs either when Articles are edited or at the Media screen. I look forward to the next release. It is also nice that I can give our lead photographers the ability to add cutlines to images they import.

When do you estimate the updated Media module will be available? Apparently, captions can be added to media, but they remain hidden. I added captions to a photo, attached them to the article and promo, and flushed all caches. The caption remains hidden.
Next update?
Any updates on the next release? Captions along with some other fields are vital for my website requirement. Have been eager to know this release is ready in quick future?
