Drupal 6 Shared database setup - sharing everything but nodes/themes/navigation

I have found a very nice guide for D5: http://groups.drupal.org/node/11795 but I wonder if anything has changed for D6?

I am creating multisite installation. No logged users (except for article authors - about 10 of them). Everything shared, but the theme, navigation and nodes. No search. Exactly the same set of modules on each site (with different configuration thou). My question is:

What would be the minimum set of tables that would have to be separate? Or to put it another way: what can be shared?

shared login for a different kind of multi-site

Hi all,

I'm running a different kind of multi-site in that it's basically 6 domains parked on top of each other and I am using some simple logic with paths and taxonomy in the init hook to force specific domains for specific pages -- so far all is working great -- I'm even able to reset the site email and name in the init hook so that outgoing emails go from the correct address. (It's Drupal 5)

The one thing I can't seem to get to work is shared login -- I thought it would be simple because it's a single database so all I would have to do is uncomment the $cookie_domain in the settings folder. But that's not working, you have to login to each site individually.

I also tried the shared login module, even though it's not meant for this set up and that didn't work either.

Anybody have any ideas on this?

thanks,
Sam

CPanel and Shared Virtual Hosting Limitations & Possibilities

My web host uses CPanel and I get 2 TB of space with unlimited domains for just $144/year. CPanel comes with Fantastico, which is the only way I've been able to get Drupal of any type working so far, but I can only install 6.2 that way because that is what Fantastico uses (at this time).

I would like to learn CMS and graduate from Dreamweaver so I can become a more valuable webmaster. But I seem to be caught up in installation SNAFUs and certainly need to upgrade and have the option to use other versions of Drupal.

I was thinking multisite made sense since I envisioned having a number of clients with a variety of needs so I subscribed to this group, but after reading many posts, mostly scratching my head wondering what they mean, it seems that the focus of multi-site is on something else.

Is there anyone here who could indulge me on describing the basic typical uses of multi-site and just tell me whether multi-site is the totally wrong approach for what I am trying to do? Please keep in mind that I am a novice and actually quite frustrated with drupal at this time. I was told it would be easy but the experience so far is that nothing ever works.

Possibly, what I need is a different web hosting solution. I would be open to recommendations. I am on a very limited budget, though. Is there anyone who would work on a client/commission basis and help me with set ups, maybe help me along a bit with some consulting for a share in my client revenues?

Email delivery discrepancy: Parent vs. subdomain

This was posted originally here >>>http://drupal.org/node/293930

But I realized belatedly that it might be better to address this to those with multisite experience.

I have drupal 6.3 installed and run about 20 other TLDs (site1.com, site2.com, etc., all folders located in the /sites directory) off that single installation. Everything works fine, with one exception.

I've noticed that the standard php mail functions (for user registration and webforms, for example) work for the parent installation, but uniformly do not work for the child subdomain installations.

Is this a common problem, and if so has anyone come up with a solution? I've tried the SMTP module but it did not address the problem.

Thanks.

Multi-site on Linux - how to call on localhost install

Trying to set up multi-site on a Linux box through localhost. I've been through all of the posts here on groups, the "Creating multiple sites" page (but it's for Windows), and every other link that has to do with multi-site in Getting Started. Also searched the mailing list since BOY.

The "Mult domain/vhosts using diff databases" page (node 278) is what I'm looking for. It appears that I've set things up right, but I'm missing that last all-important step...

I have drupal installed in /var/www/html/drupal-6.3, using a mysql database named 'aa'.
http://localhost/drupal-6.3
navigates to the site fine. I can log in, make changes, all sorts of goodness.

I added two new databases, bb and cc, in mysql, added two new sites, /sites/bb and /sites/cc, next to /sites/default, and have settings.php and /files copied over.

I've modified /sites/bb/settings.php and /sites/cc/settings.php to reflect mysql's 'bb' and 'cc' databases: $db_url = 'mysqli://me:secret@localhost/bb', etc.

And I modified httpd.conf:

NameVirtualHost *:80

DocumentRoot /var/www/html/drupal-6.3
ServerName bb

OK. So how do I GET to Site B or Site C? http://localhost/drupal-6.3/bb doesn't work, nor does http://locahlost/bb, and so on, through lots of increasingly wild and silly guesses.

(Once I get this working locally, I'll map external domains (www.exampleBB.com and www.exampleCC.com) to bb and cc. I've done THAT before without much trouble. But it'd be nice to be able to get to my work via localhost. :))

r.

Shared search

I have a few Drupal sites running from one code base and one database. The tables currently shared are Authmap, profile_fields, profile_values, role, sessions, users and users_roles.

I want the search to search all of the sites, can this be done by just sharing the search tables or is it more complex.

Multisite that's really a single site with themes/domains question -- and consultant needed

Hi all,

A nonprofit client wants separate sites for each campus program they run. Each would have its own domain and its own theme.

But, it really needs to be the same database/site, because cck/views is going to be used intensively to do a lot of cross campus data gathering.

My thinking is to do a multi-site installation where each site uses the same database, and I park each domain over a subsites.

Or I'm wondering if it makes more sense to add some custom code that basically looks at the domain being used and then sets the theme based on it.

I realize that either way this will create problems, when, for example, node/15 belongs to site1.com and someone enters site2.com/node/15 and sees that page. I also need to do this is Drupal 5, because it's going to need a few modules that haven't been ported yet.

Can anyone advise what they would do in this situation?

Also, I have a budget to hire some outside consulting on this project. If you have a good grip on multisites and dns stuff and are available to do some consulting, please send me an email at sam@samcohen.com

How to most efficiently set up private client blogs using multisite?

I would like to set up private blogs for clients, each readable only by the client and myself. These blogs will be simple and identical, and far different from my main site installation. I'm running Drupal (6.3) on my top level domain (www.example.com). I've been reading for several hours, all kinds of solutions, and have settled on one which may work. I'd like to share my solution, and get your feedback and answers to a few points I'm not clear about. I'm not a Drupal noob, but I'm not exactly a programmer either, so simplest is best, as long as it gets the job done safely.

A. Will it work to set up a completely new installation of Drupal at clients.example.com, and set that up to run as a multisite without interfering with my main installation?

B. Do I have to create the actual physical directory "clients.example.com/client1" on the server?

C. My understanding is that when I set up the sites directory structure as above, and point my browser to clients.example.com/client1, as long as my settings.php is virgin, this will call the install.php from the main site. Do I need to be concerned about whether it calls install.php from the domain root, instead of the clients subdirectory installation?

D. During installation, can I specify the same database as I'm using for the multisite hub, (clients.example.com), and specify a prefix for that client sub-site? I see that Domain Access plus Domain Prefix might be another way to do this, but again, I'm trying to keep things simplest.

E. Is there a straightforward way to set up and duplicate a reference site, in order to easily copy common content, menus, vocabularies, etc.? I'm guessing this would require messing with the database. I'm somewhat comfortable using phpAdmin on my server and MySQL Administrator from my local computer to do simple operations. Would also be able/willing to do command line actions if that's required. Perhaps my desire to have this capability points to setting up separate databases for each client installation as the best solution? My preference is to have a single database to backup weekly, rather than one for every client, but maybe I could automate that.

F. Is there any way to set things up so a client could log into their private site (clients.example.com/client1) and also be automatically logged into the main site (example.com), but users could not go the other way around and gain access to private client sites just by logging into the main site? At this point, I'm thinking this setup will require two logins.

I know I may be asking for a lot here, but I figure I want to see what the boundaries are before I go ahead with this solution. I'm going in this multisite direction for three reasons: 1) OG seems a little tricky to set up potentially dozens or even hundreds of single-member groups and keep access to content private - maybe I'm wrong, but it seems too much could go wrong to expose someone's content to the public. 2) I'd like to not jeopardize my client setups while being free to push the envelope on my main site, so would prefer two separate databases. 3) I'd like a sure way to bar search engine and other robots; even though login would be required to access any content on the multisites, dropping the appropriate robots.txt in the root subdirectory seems just that little bit safer; plus, there won't be any access to posting or commenting on any of these sites without an administrator-created account, which is more strict control than I'd like to have on my main site.

I'd appreciate anyone shooting holes in my logic or cluing me in to things I've missed.

Thank you so much for your help.

To say less words and to be more clear, I've made a scheme of system, that I want to create.

If you've already made the same system, please, share your knowledge, and describe, how you did it.
If you just know how to do it, sure you are welcome to write as well.

Reinventing the Wheel?

I am looking to set up a number of related but individual sites. The sites will all be configured identically but will have their own users and content. However, on occasion some of the users and nodes will need to be shared.

Inspired by a Drupal-Dojo session on db_rewrite_sql I have started to write a module that does this:

Relies on Drupal multisite functionality to share most tables but make cache and system tables site independent.

Has three tables to keep track of which users/nodes/taxonomy terms are available for which sites.

Uses the internal Drupal APIs to add users/nodes/taxonomy terms to said tables when they are added for a particular site.

Uses hook_db_rewrite_sql and the internal Drupal APIs to mitigate which users/nodes/taxonomy terms are available to which sites depending on said tables.

Eventually, I would need to set up rules and admin pages for sharing the users/nodes/taxonomy terms across sites.

My question, am I reinventing the wheel here? I have taken a look at some of the multisite modules but haven't seen anything doing this exactly. There seem to be some really developed modules that excel at doing very complex things that don't quite meet my needs. But I haven't gone too deep in to the code to see if there are pieces that I can use and build on.

Or even if anyone thinks I can contribute some code to an existing project to make this to work, I would rather do that than create another multisite module. Of course, if anyone thinks it is worthwhile, I will contribute this back and work with anyone interested in developing it out.

If you are wondering specifically what I am working on: we provide our member school libraries with websites that are identical but they add their own content and have their own unique users. However, we would like to allow the libraries to share things like book reviews and web links across their sites.

Multisite access module options

hello, i am new to both the group and drupal in general. Although i have been aware of drupal, i have not tried a serious installation of it beyond the core installation. I now have a project, that i would like to make a real attempt into integrating with the drupal universe. i plan on installing a drupal 6.2 installation on a unix server running, apache 2.2.9, php 5.2.6, mysql 5.0.51a.

The goal of my multisite installation, will be to create 3 domains (example1.com, example2.com, and example3.com) with a single user and forum login (i would like to have every user be unique across all 3 domains). The 3 sites may or may not have shared content, blocks, nodes, themes etc. I would like the option to go either route if possible.

I would like to create access for administrator, editor, contributor, authorized user and anon/public. There will probably be gradients of authorization between these basic levels of access as the site grows.

I have read quite a few group posts and threads including.
http://groups.drupal.org/node/11494
http://groups.drupal.org/node/7725
http://drupal.org/node/264531
http://drupal.org/node/234087
http://groups.drupal.org/node/5392
among many others

It seems to me that the options available to me are
TAC
OG
OGR (when avail)
CA
ACL
DA
singlesignon

So here's the .25 question.

Which configuration of these modules or any others i may have missed would make the most sense.

If i just blindly installed them all and did not use some of them, what problems, might i be setting myself up for in the future. If i just went with a more streamlined install, and went with just one or 2 of them, what problems would i run into if i added components in the future.

What kind of db changes would i need to make to run a single user base for site and forum access/permissions.

The forums will exist separately on each individual sites domain as they will be somewhat unrelated. I would just like user for domain A to join domain A and have access to domain A, B, C and Forum A,B,C and be unique across all 3 domains. Basically a single username directory for a 3 sites and forums

Ok so maybe there were .50 of questions there. and i'm sure i'll be adding to them as suggestions and answers arrive. Thank you in advance for your time and input.

Folder set-up needed for http://sublevel2.sublevel1.domain.tld/drupal/site1 to work?

Hi everyone.

I'm switching providers and have a temporal test domain at the new provider which is a subdomain of a subdomain:

sublevel2.sublevel1.domain.tld

It only gives me access to htdocs root folder on the server. So I need to add
/drupal
to actually get to drupal's core. What I'm aspiring is to test the drupal set-up at the new provider without having to do anything when the domains finally have been switched over, too (i.e. DNS is changed). In other words with a copy of the current folder
sites/actual-domain.tld
I would like to use

http://sublevel2.sublevel1.domain.tld/drupal/actual-domain1.tld/
.

This, however, doesn't work (install.php is called) since drupal seams not to look for
sites/actual-domain.tld
after failing
tld.drupal.actual-domain.tld
.

From settings.php:

*  1. sites/www.drupal.org.mysite.test
*  2. sites/drupal.org.mysite.test
*  3. sites/org.mysite.test
*
*  4. sites/www.drupal.org.mysite

What is going wrong?

I also played around with
$base_url
to no avail. The closed I was I had content displayed but no theme and admin section didn't work properly, neither. That was with
$base_url = 'http://sublevel2.sublevel1.domain.tld/drupal';
, directory name
tld.drupal
. Not to mention I cannot find a way for site2 or site3.

Cheers!

This is the code am using.. u see in my table am having three content type, but three content type

I want to know the reason..

Where i Made the mistake....

Multisite or theming on one site?

I am running a smaller community site with D5 and Organic Groups module. It is a closed site, so you have to be an authenticated user to see any content.

One of the OG groups want to have their group homepage public as an external web page. This external site should contain exactly the same content as their group homepage, but have its own theme and no user login.
In other words, if you are logged in to my community site the group should have the same theme as for the rest of the community, but if you are anonymous user and looks at this group you will see it with a specific external theme.

I have been thinking of two possible solutions for this:

1) Set up 2 sites running from the same database. Were one is the community site and the other is a "read-only" site where anonymous user can see the group homepage with a different theme and menu system, but the same content.

2) Only one site with different themes depending on taxonomy and user role. Then I would tag the group that I want to show externally with a taxonomy term, e.g. 'external'. I would then have a special theme for the taxonomy term 'external' if the user is anonymous. If the user is authenticated he will see the standard theme even if he is looking at the taxonomy term 'external'.
http://drupal.org/project/taxonomy_theme

Any helpful ideas?
Thanks!

zone file, conf file, named file and mysite.com/site1

I run many sites off single core.

Here's what I've done to make multisite work pretty good:

Create mysql database with permissions

cd ../drupal/sites/

cp -R default/ newsite.com

chmod o+w /sites/newsite.com/

Add a zone file.

Add the new site to the conf file.

Add a ServerAlias in the vhost file.

Restart *named*

Direct my browser to newsite.com and run the install script ...

I can also add a new site to a subdomain(s) (site1.mysite.com and site2.site1.mysite.com) by adding "A" records to the mysite.com zone file.

But now I have a new need: I need new installs at mysite.com/site1, mysite.com/site1/site2 (and not site1.mysite.com, site2.site1.mysite.com)

Specifically:

What do I add to the drupal root directory or ../sites/ ?

What do I add to the zone file?

What - if anything - do I add to vhost file, etcetera?

Shared database technique in general

After investing a lot of time trying to figure out how to do multi-site via a shared database, I've come to the following (personal opinion) conclusion.

Just Say No

Reasons:

it's complex, difficult and dangerous

Drupal' lack of canonical schema documentation

problems with new module installs

problems with upgrades

Exceptions:

If you are already a Drupal AND a database wizard (I'm neither)

Playing around in a development environment, e.g. my current use case: in figuring out theming development, I'm installing then removing different themes, switching back and forth between them messes up my blocks, so I've got a multi-site sandbox set up sharing everything except system/layout/navigation tables. See http://groups.drupal.org/node/11795

For a production site and a relative newbie, sharing only the user-related tables seems relatively common, and in fact the v5 settings.php gives a (presumably safe) example.

Note this is just my opinion, so hopefully some more knowledgeable people will comment, either to confirm or to post known-good scenarios and sample settings.php.

I hope this will save others from wasting as much time as I have. Actually, gaining knowledge is never a waste of time, I certainly know more about the database schema than I did before, but I sure which it was properly documented in the first place!

Warning - I'm a noob, please be gentle

Here's a pretty much self-documented settings.php file showing how I've got my multi-site working. If someone familiar with Drupal's (v5) database structures could scan this and comment I'd really appreciate it. Note ALL the core tables are listed here, as per grepping "CREATE TABLE" from the .install files.

$db_prefix = array(
   'default' => 'watchout_drupal.shb1sh_', /* new tables get created here, */
                 /* need to analyze and then add (shared or separate?) below */
   'cache'        => => 'shared_', /* content - shared */
   'term_node'                     => 'shared_', /* content - shared */
   'url_alias'                     => 'shared_', /* content - shared */
);

I've pieced the logic together for this from literally hundreds of hours of googling various threads and postings, and I feel pretty OK about this configuration for this scenario - I want to share users (including roles and profiles), as well as all content, including taxonomy. I want to keep theming, layout and navigation separate.

However, I'd like to expand my understanding of the principles involved in handling those tables that link across these areas, especially if I want to for example not share the content but yes share the taxonomy.

For example the block_roles table; I think I've played it safe by keeping it separate with blocks, while roles are shared, and I've put both filters and filter_formats with roles since the latter shares a field there. And url_alias just tracks the path/pathauto attribute for nodes, nothing to do with menuing, right?

Anyone know of a canonical source of database schema documentation for version 5?

Thanks in advance

I want to keep this quesiton separate from this node: http://groups.drupal.org/node/11737
but I have an aditional question reguarding the virtual sites module.

what if I wanted to have the following:

www.domain1.com
site1.domain1.com
site2.domain1.com
site3.domain1.com
www.domain2.com
site4.domain2.com
site5.domain2.com
site6.domain2.com

so, is this something that virtual domains can handle?
is there a better way to do this?

The Drupal Virtual Site module

I am just starting a multisite drupal setup. My plan is to have some magazines with pretty much all the same functionality. even the themes will be the same with differnet images. I was looking at the drupal virtual site module, but have not tried playing with it. Its sounds pretty sexxy but I have not started playing yet. does anyone have any experience. This is a D6.2 project.
the link is here: http://drupal.org/project/virtual_site

Here is the sticking point... I want to have one code base, but the domains are separate...

www.domain1.com
www.domain2.com
www.domain3.com

I would also like to have separate databases.

I am going to post a separate discussion about another question I have. I will reference this node because I have another twist.... stay tuned...

Splitting multisites into different sites

I've been using Drupal for a couple of years, but haven't done any multisites yet.

Is it feasible to create 10 to 20 sites on a single Drupal installation, or is that going to slow things down more than having them as separate Drupal installations?

Can individual sites be separated into individual Drupal sites later? For example, remove site #5 from the multisite installation and create an independent Drupal installation out of it?

Thanks

I'm having trouble setting up a second separate site - database tables need to get created somehow

Hi all, first time post.
I have been using Drupal for my wife's business website for some time now and I really like it. I am running Drupal 6.2 on FreeBSD and I'm using Apache 2.2 as the web server and PostgreSQL as the db backend.

I am trying to setup a website for myself using Drupal with a separate database for my site. I created the appropriate folder under sites/ and copied the settings.php file. I created a new db and set that db name and password in the settings.php file. I also configured apache to handle the new virtual server.
The problem is that the database doesn't have any of the tables that it needs inside it, and I don't know how to get Drupal to create them.
I set world write on the settings.php file, I removed it altogether, I copied the default settings file into my new site directory too, hoping that at some point Drupal would see this as a new site and automatically create the tables in the database. None of these tricks made it work. At best I was able to get Drupal to throw up a default page stating that the site was misconfigured. I tried calling install.php and update.php on the new site but that didn't work either.

I suppose I could copy the database from my wife's site and delete all the content in it, but doesn't seem like the right way to do it. Alternatively I could hide her site content and try to trick Drupal in establishing another new site.

It seems to me that there should be a simple way to get the tables created in the new database. Does anyone have any insight into this?

Problems with multi-site setup

I looked again and again in different posts about the multisite setup, but I am unable to get them to work.

I want different subdomains using only one DB.

These are the steps I followed:

Downloaded Drupal 6.2 and copied content to the root of my personal website. (Hosted on one.com)

Run the Drupal setup. Point to correct database etc. No problems.

My main site is now accessible. Everything OK here...

Create different folders in Sites for the different subdomains. I created /sites/a.mysite.com, b.mysite.com, c.mysite.com.

Copied the settings.php from sites/default to each subfolder.

Now I want to access a.mysite.com or b.mysite.com but I receive http error 404.

I can only point my browser to www.mysite.com/sites/a.mysite.com.

Am I missing something here? I followed the installation procedure step-by-step. I looked at different posts to see whether I did something wrong.

Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks,

E.

I'm a fan Install Profile Generator modules and didn't see any pending patches for Drupal 6. Can someone please update me and the community on any of these projects being worked on for 6 or a new alternative?

Development, Staging and Production sites

Hi everyone, newbie here. I was able to multisite working. I only have one problem:

My customers have exisiting sites like lets say customer1.com and customer2.com

I want to migrate them, but be able to host them on my server (mydrupalserver.com) until they migrate thier hosting and site to my site.

I totally understand how to setup my box to read thier domain locally (With hosts files in windows), how would I set up a staging site so I can essentially move over thier .com

some issues I see:

files that are stored on customer.mysite.com that now should have customer1.com links....

any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Aaron

Multi-site Questions, how to

Greetings,

I have been using drupal for more than a couple years now, but never used a multi-site set-up before. Recently a client expressed a desire for a setup that I think will be best served by a multi-site setup. Here's what I need:

http://example.com
http://example.com/site_i
http://example.com/site_ii
http://example.com/site_iii
http://example.com/site_iv

-> 5 sites total, each would have it's own content. Blocks, modules, etc would be the same from site to site (at this point in time), there may be a future need for different modules/etc.
-> I'd like to share logins/sessions, but permissions could be different from site to site. If permissions have to be the same I can deal with that.
-> Templates will be the same throughout each site, but will be different "color sets". This can easily be dealt with by separate templates, but updates would be a pita.
-> This is a Windows Server, running iis and mysql. Having read through much of the multi-site documentation on d.o most of it deals with the linux environment and as much as I would like to move this client to a linux machine so I have a hope in hell of understanding what to do with the thing he has other "applications" running on the server that must run on a windows os.

That's it in a nutshell. I'm guessing this is going to be relatively simple, just time consuming I thought I would come here and see if i could get some help from those who have done this sort of thing in the past.

Thank you.

Hosting ideas?

Folks, I'm looking for some ideas.

I currently play "site admin" for four different web sites. They are all physically located in different web hosting accounts with the same web host. All of them are running Drupal. My role with all of them is to keep Drupal and the necessary modules and themes up-to-date and to establish the structure and functionality of the site. It's someone else's job to create and manage content using the tools that Drupal provides. All of these sites are for not-for-profit organizations and I'm not making any money from them...just covering expenses.

My dilemma is that I have four Drupal installations to maintain. That's a bit of a PITA. A new module version comes out and I have to upload it and install it here, then upload and install it there, etc. It's even more fun when I decide to upgrade Drupal. I stuck at 5.1 for a long time before I finally updated all of the sites to 5.7.

I'm fairly adept with Drupal multi-site installations (one code base, separate databases). Does it make sense to consolidate all of these sites into one multi-site installation? Bandwidth might be an issue with one of the sites, but it'd still be within the bandwidth limits that most shared hosting accounts offer.

Is there an downside to multi-site?

Other thoughts?

Bob...

How to redirect from subdomain login page to main domain login page across multisite and shared user environment?

Hi,
I have one main site (mydomain.com) and one members subsite (members.mydomain.com). In this case members.mydomain.com is master site but cookie domain in settings.php of master site (members.mydomain.com) is mydomain.com. And that works perfectly.

But I want user can signup/login through members.mydomain.com/user page, that mean if any user can click on mydomain.com/user link, it will be redirected into members.mydomain.com/user page with destination link.

Any idea, help or guidance appreciated.
Thanks.
Sendmail from Multisite (many domains, one core)

I'm new to this group.

We've been running a multi-site hosting environment for a few years - small sites, small traffic, so easy to maintain. One problem that we haven't solved yet is how to configure sendmail on the sites to send from the domain of each sub-site. Mail comes out with appropriated "from", but Sender is listed as the www user of our mail server.

Has anyone dealt with this issue?

Thanks,

[Copied across from the main forum, as I'm getting no replies there - this might be a better home]

Is this possible? I have searched for every relevant phrase I can think of but am getting nowhere.

Long URL's for Multisite files folder

I have set up my first multisite installation and I have a question. I have parked a domain using CPanel onto my main domain and I have directories set up for each site in the sites folder. Here is what my sites directory looks like for the 2 domains:

sites/domain1.com/files
sites/domain1.com/modules
sites/domain1.com/templates
sites/domain1.com/tmp
sites/domain1.com/settings.php
sites/domain2.com/files
sites/domain2.com/modules
sites/domain2.com/templates
sites/domain2.com/tmp
sites/domain2.com/settings.php

Everything seems to be working fine. However, the only issue I'm having is the length of the URL's for anything in the files directory. Instead of a URL that I currently have like this:
www.domain1.com/sites/domain1.com/files/image.jpg

I'd prefer this:
www.domain1.com/files/image.jpg

I found the following information in the handbook here:
http://drupal.org/node/53705

Files Directory

The following user-submitted code may be useful in redirecting URLs for the /files directory to the /sites/example.com/files directory. The following code is added to the [drupal_root]/files/.htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /sites/%{HTTP_HOST}/files/$1 [L]

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be working.

I'm using also using the XMLsitemap module and it needs separate files directories for each site. Does anyone have any suggestions for shorter URL's for the files directories in each site?

Thanks,
Graydon

Development & Production Sites with Database Prefixes

I mentioned this at the last Boston meetup, and there was some interest so I though I would share. Running two sites off the same database and prefixing certain tables should allow for a simple dev/prod environment.

The idea is to isolate the configurations for the two different sites in two differently prefixed sets of tables, and allow all the content, users, taxonomy, etc. to mingle. To test this I've set up two subdomains, dev1.castlin.net and dev2.castlin.net. Here is the entry in settings.php for dev2 (dev1 is strikingly similar):

$db_prefix = array (
  'default' => '',
  'access' => 'dev2_',
  'authmap' => 'dev2_',
  'blocks' => 'dev2_',
  'blocks_roles' => 'dev2_',
  'boxes' => 'dev2_',
  'cache' => 'dev2_',
  'filters' => 'dev2_',
  'filter_formats' => 'dev2_',
  'flood' => 'dev2_',
  'menu' => 'dev2_',
  'node_access' => 'dev2_',
  'node_type' => 'dev2_',
  'permission' => 'dev2_',
  'role' => 'dev2_',
  'system' => 'dev2_',
  'users_roles' => 'dev2_',
  'variable' => 'dev2_',
);

Let's pretend dev1 is my production site and dev2 is my development site. I can use .htaccess to limit access to dev2 to just my IP address, then tweak it freely without worrying about disturbing the functionality of dev1. Also, I have access to all the actual content, user records, and taxonomy of my production site in real time, so I can see exactly how the changes I'm making are affecting the site.

When I get the dev site into a state I'm happy with, rolling it out to production should be easy:

Put production offline for a minute.

Change the prefix in production's settings.php to be the one I'm currently using for dev

Clear the cache in production.

Turn production back on.

After this, production and development are effectively the same site. However, if I make another copy of the unshared tables and give them a different prefix, and set dev's prefix to that new one, I've split them again. You could either switch prefixes back and forth, or use a datestamp as the prefix to get a kind of site versioning.

This approach is probably only useful for smaller sites with a single or very small pool of administrators and developers. However, I think it might be very nimble, and I really like the idea of having all the live content available in development in real time, and the potential to store "versions" of you site configuration.

Of course, there are downsides. You have to pay very close attention to how modules are changing the database, and maybe add some more prefixes. Modules that don't format their queries properly will likely break this, but that's a problem with all prefixing. It also requires a degree of discipline: any configuration changes you make in Production will be "overwritten" when you switch in the Dev prefix.

I've only tried this out on a small test site, so if you decide to use this technique on a real site, do so cautiously, and let me know how it goes!

Problem in restricting access to subdomains in multi-site

I've just made my first Multi-site go live, with the first now live. It's defined using a subdomain structure, like site1.example.com and this works fine.

The problem is, if I type into the browser address site2.example.com, or anything-at-all.example.com, it goes straight to the install.php for my first site - which of course it can't run as it's already built. I've clearly got something wrong here. What I'd really like to do is have access restricted, so that unless you type in an existing address, like my first example above, either (1) nothing happens but a default page, or redirect, or (2) the default site appears.

Any suggestions or pointers? I have spent AGES looking round the various sources for help but am just getting more confused!!!

I'm not expert with .htaccess - so if this is the route to happiness, I'll need a little hand-holding.

Thanks in advance!

Easy problem? Easy Solution for multisite?

I believe I want to do something fairly simple......

I have multisite installed on my domain: www.mysite.com with sites running at customer1.mysite.com and customer2.mysite.com

I am hosting the content for my customer who has a domain registered as www.customer1.com. BTW, both of these are hosted on Godaddy.....

I am parking the domain www.customer1.com and sending doing a redirect over to customer1.mysite.com.

The site is fully functional, but all of the links still say "customer1.mysite.com".

I've done some reading and I don't believe that symlinks or apache config will work here as its on a different server....should I be doing a CNAme or something?

I'm not so good with networking, so any help is appreciated. Also, I don't believe I need to install any domain modules as I am not sharing any database information, just sharing the core drupal installation....

Thanks!

Understanding multisite

There are so many different understandings of multisite, and so many different solutions with configuration options, that I wonder if we might make a way of quickly describing them. As I see it multi-site solutions differ mainly on what is shared between sites, and what is unique. Therefore, here is a rough first cut of shared / unique features against a range of solutions. I don't know enough to fill in the boxes - I'm only suggesting a way of notating here.

Each cell is filled in with (S)hared, (U)nique, (E)ither, or (C)omplicated.

multisite module

groups

Domain Access module

etc.

Users

U

S

C

Vocabularies

U

S

E

Node access

U

E

C

Menus

U

S

S

Themes

E

S

Database

U

S

S

Architecture

U

S

S

Then people will be able more quickly to choose which multisite solution is the closest fit for them.

Multisite on a LAMP

Hi,

I've been trying for the past week to create a multisite on a LAMP with no luck. My objective is to add new sites to my existing Drupal code base that have their own database.

My multisite set up is as follows:

Drupal is installed in /var/www/html/. This directory contains the core directories (e.g. files. modules, includes, and sites).

In "sites", there are the directories "all", "default", and "mysite.com", which is the new site I'm adding.

In "mysite.com", there are the directories "files", "modules", "themes", and "tmp". In addition, there is a symlink "html" that points to /var/www/html/. To be more specific, CDing symlink takes you to /var/www/html/sites/mysite.com.com/html which contains everything that /var/www/html/ contains.

In settings.php, I have set $base_url = 'http://localhost/html'. However, browsing to http://localhost/mysite.com brings me to a "Not Found" page. But, browsing to http://localhost/html/sites/mysite.com/ brings me to a directory page which contains all the folders in /var/www/html/sites/mysite.com/. Regardless, I'm unable to view the added Drupal site.

Hopefully, someone will be able to point out my mistake or something that I am missing in my set up.

Many thanks,

Thai

Multisite, different domains, single database/content but seperate on domains

Hi

this is my objective:

to have a single drupal installation, and i have 3 domains www.domain1.com, www.domain2.com, www.domain3.com

I want to have one database, that is, all my content is entered from the main drupal site, but i want to assign each content to a single domain or multiple domains

how can i achieve this?

thanks

im running 5.7

Multisite for Content Separation

OK I've spent hours reading through the various shared database multisite options including TAC, multi-domain, OG, Domain-access and a number of others. Many of them seem to be very much concerned with access control for a community of logged-in users. One thing I'm not seeing clearly is the ability of a solution that allows a good old fashioned Web 1.0 webmaster to control exactly what content goes to which site.

By this I mean that for a casual visitors, google bots, etc
- Story A is on site1.com
- Story B is on site2.com
- Story C is on site1.com and site site2.com

Ideally this would be set by the 'webmaster' when they are entering the story. The important thing would be that Story B doesn't appear anywhere on site1.com, not on any list of stories or any menu on site1. Even if a you manually changed the URL to from site2.com to site1.com you still couldn't find story B on site1.com (hopefully you would get a custom 'Page Not Found' if you tried that).

I have the feeling that something like this may exist already but that it is hidden behind all the descripions of fine grained access control. Multi-Domain seems like it might be close to what I'm looking for but I'm a bit uncertain about the 'small patch to Drupal core',reliance on 'single signon' and the lack of activity.

Setting the site_name or site_mail override variable will break installation when no user table is present, because it'll prevent you from creating the first administrator account.

related bug report: http://drupal.org/node/212284

you will need to put site_name and site_mail in comments during installation.

Cannot enable or disable modules in each site created by multisite module

Hi everybody,
I set up a drupal 5.6 and add the multisite module for creating many sites for my company. as we don't want to deploy the codes again and again for a simple CMS site.

My problem is I cannot enable or disable modules for the created sites.
Should I place the modules in the DIR sites/all/modules or just in the modules directory? --- I tryed this but nothing differents

I followed this guide: http://cvs.drupal.org/viewvc.py/drupal/contributions/modules/multisite_manager/INSTALL.txt?pathrev=HEAD&view=markup
and it seems to works well. what I did just as this:
My server is Debian sarge.
take a look at the virtual host configurations:

debian-testing:/home/zof/drupal# cat /etc/apache2/sites-available/multi-site
NameVirtualHost *
<VirtualHost *>
        ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost
        ServerName ms.nacta.edu.cn
#       AliasMatch ^/site/\w+/(.*) /home/www-data/multi-site/$2
        DocumentRoot /home/www-data/multi-site
        <Directory /home/www-data/multi-site>
                Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
                AllowOverride None
                Order allow,deny
                allow from all
        </Directory>
