We've been using the Taxonomy XML to import the hierarchical taxonomy we've been using for genres in Project, Show, and Timeslot Theme. Taxonomy XML now supports taxonomy as a service. Taxonomy XML includes two services (Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG) - LSID Web Resolver and New Zealand Government Locator Service (NZGLS) - Services Of New Zealand (SONZ)). We haven't tested this, but I think it has a lot of promise to solve the synchronization issue as we move to a new standard for genres.
