The New York Observer is seeking to hire a front-end developer or producer to maintain its flagship property (Observer.com) and several smaller related sites. We use Drupal almost exclusively for all our web properties.

This position will consist partly of developing and maintaining the front-end (theme) aspects of our sites and partly of handling basic web production (administration) tasks, as well as liaising with various contractors who will be developing larger back-end projects. The position will be the main technical manager of the Observer's properties and will have the opportunity to touch all aspects of development (if desired).

Required qualifications:

  • Significant experience building standards-compliant XHTML and CSS.
  • Good background in cross-browser compatibility testing.
  • Strong visual and verbal communication skills.
  • Experienced in "slicing" (translating mockups to live, working XHTML/CSS).

Preferred, but not required:

  • Any experience with Drupal's theme system is a major plus.
  • Familiarity and experience with PHP is a big plus (particularly as web templating language).
  • Knowledge of Javascript (especially jQuery) is a plus.
  • Experiencing managing or working with development contractors is helpful.

We are looking for someone who can work in our office (located in the Flatiron/Union Square area of Manhattan) full time, although occasional telecommuting is fine. We have a casual, laid-back office environment.

Please send resumes and same samples of your work to Brian Kroski (bkroski@observer.com). This position is available immediately and will be open until filled.
