Meet-up?

Well, we haven't had a meet-up in around 4 months. And, I would like to set-up a meet-up to get things possibly going again within this group. I am willing to do a topic on my Google Summer of Code Project on Drupal (Validation API). I understand there were two others from this group in the GSoC (kyle_mathews and jtsnow) that may want to add into my presentation as well. Plus, maybe we could have someone present one of their recent Drupal websites (kmillecam just talked about working in the Novell's Drupal Community and amariotti got a lot of comments about the Davis Applied Technology College project). Hopefully, I am not putting pressure on any of you to actually commit to do anything, but your topics would be very interesting.

I want to hear everyone's feedback on the interest in another meet-up. I would assume that we would be meeting up on a Saturday morning again, since that seemed to be the best time for the majority. Also, I am assuming that we would be meeting in SL County as well. We might be able to get a location like SLCC or Sandy Library again, as well. However, I would be willing to go to Utah or Davis County if there is enough support. Lets hear the feedback.

"Talk Like a Pirate" day on Symantec's Juice

Today, (September 19) Symantec took our advice (against their better judgement), gambled and let us install the "Talk Like a Pirate" module (http://drupal.org/project/pirate) on their "Juice" community at http://juice.altiris.com

It's been a blast!

If you read this on the 19th, drop by and read how the filter changes regular posts into "pirate speak".

If you missed the event, here's a sample post from one of the users:

Wow. Pirate auto-conversion!
Submitted by sjlewis on 19 September, 2008 - 11:35.

At first, I thought everyone were bein' just talkin' like a pirate. I di'nae realize that Juice is actually convertin' our text from english t' pirate speak, I'll warrant ye! I spent some time craftin' me last email t' be pirate-y clever ... but apparently, I just need t' let juice do th' work.

This entry were bein' entered with normal english ... it will be fun t' see what th' pirate conversion algorithm will do t' it.

Did anyone e'er wonder what Billy Joel songs would sound like if he were a pirate, and a bucket o' chum? Probably a lot more drunk than usual ... let's see, shall we?

It's nine o'clock on a saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an auld lubber sittin' next t' me
Makin' love t' his tonic and gin

The ornery cuss says, son, can ye play me a memory?
I'm not really sure how it goes
But 'tis sad and 'tis sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger mans clothes

La la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da

(Chorus)
Sin' us a song, ye're th' piano lubber
Sin' us a song tonight
Well, were all in th' mood fer a melody
And ye've got us feelin' alright

Now john at th' bar is a matey o' mine
The ornery cuss gets me me drinks fer free
And he be quick with a joke or t' light up yer smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
The ornery cuss says, bill, I believe this is killin' me.
As th' smile ran away from his face
Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out o' this place

Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da

Now paul is a real estate novelist
Who ne'er had time fer a lady
And he be talkin' with davy who's still in th' navy
And likely will be fer life

And th' waitress is practicin' politics
As th' businessmen slowly get stoned
Aye, they're sharin' a drink they call loneliness
But 'tis better than drinkin' alone

Chorus

It's a pretty good crowd fer a saturday
And th' admiral gives me a smile
cause he knows that 'tis me they've been comin' t' see
To forget about life fer a while
And th' piano, it sounds like a carnival
And th' microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at th' bar and put bread in me jar
And say, lubber, what are ye doin' here?

Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da

Chorus

An announcement for Drupal Users using Salesforce.com

I am proud to announce the availability of a new module for Drupal integration with Salesforce.com CRM users. I posted on our group page a while ago regarding a potential module that would integrate Salesforce's Lead Form into the Webform module that we've all grown to love. Well... I was able to get in contact with a developer from Ohio, who was excellent to work with, that did just that for us.

What made it easier was the fact that a SugarCRM Webform Integration module was already out there for Drupal. He used that as a starting point and was able to make a module that will be used by Salesforce/Drupal Users for many years to come.

For those of you that aren't familiar with the SugarCRM module it utilizes the Webform Module and allows you to create forms that will then map to your SugarCRM account. The Salesforce.com module does the exact same thing. Under the advanced settings for each field is a "SalesForce Field Key" drop-down where you will select which field it needs to be mapped to.

The settings page under Site Config. is used to enter the username and password (with Salesforce Key) of the user that will be tied to the Leads that come from the form. It can also be used to add more data elements to the drop-down on the Advanced Settings page for each field.

So far the module is not "stable" on the project page, but I have it running on our new website and so far everything is working perfectly.

Link to project page: http://drupal.org/project/salesforcewebform

Anyone have comments or suggestions for this module?

Drupal Statistics

It's a number of Drupal statistics including number of active installations, most popular modules, number of Drupal downloads, etc.

5-10 min Q&A

Open Question Period -- People bring questions they'd like help answering from the group
~45 min

Edit this as you see fit

Lame, I just noticed there are no comments on wiki pages now -- so add comments here:

I suggest that each presenter post a discussion page before presenting with an outline of their presentation and a list of links to different resources they'll mention. So for my post on optimizing Drupal, I would link to a number of pages on drupal.org, g.d.o. and blog posts which give ideas for optimizing Drupal.

Kyle Mathews

I say only one presentation per meeting, unless there is a relation between the multiple presentations. Also, I added the introduction, just so we can get more familiar with each other.

Next Topic

As discussed in the Saturday meeting, I was going to set up a wiki page for topics. However, I remembered we had set one up before.
http://groups.drupal.org/node/9762

So, just a reminder for all. You can put your name in any given topic, and place new topics on that wiki page.

My two cents. If you are a leader for a topic, then set-up a time for your presentation. I believe if we have a topic and a time set, people will come. But, when we are relying on people to commit to a time for an unknown topic, it seems harder to get people interested.

Dynamic Block

I'm hoping to get some help from the group on this. My last request was a little off the Drupal Subject, this one should do a little better.

I'm developing a site for an Applied Technology College that have a Jobs section where jobs will be posted and associated with each program. I'd then like each program to display a block with all of the jobs pertaining to that program. Any ideas? I thought this would be something very straight-forward, but it's not as easy as I thought.

I have been using views and even grabbed a module that was supposed to filter all content in a block that had taxonomy terms matching the node. Any other ideas? I'm a beginner when it comes to Views Arguments...which is probably the way I need to go.

Thanks, guys!

Launched my website

Just wanted to let the group know that I launched my personal Drupal site last week. My main focus is to have a blog where I can share experiences with Drupal and anything else having to do with web development. My other focus is to be able to have a place for my clients (the few that I have) to login to submit feature requests or changes that need to be made on their sites. I'm using the case tracker module to track those, and am hoping that it will help keep requests from my clients stay more organized. OK, that's enough talking... here's the site:

Ubercart Alternative

For our last meet-up that we were organizing I put an item on there to discuss a shopping cart alternative for Ubercart. Since then they released their first stable version of the software. It's called Magento, and it is an open source project similar to Drupal (obviously not as big as Drupal yet, though). This came up on my news feed today:

As part of Google Summer of Code ‘08, a Magento / Drupal integration project is getting off the ground. A detailed proposal has been posted on the Groups.Drupal site, and the abstract is included below:

Magento has just released production ready version 1.0 and has comprehensive support ecosystem for its users. Current existing ecommerce modules for Drupal either do not have production ready release or do not support Drupal 6. Hence, integration between Drupal and Magento will be the powerful combination and will drive embracing of Drupal 6 even more.

This project aims to tightly integrate Magento into Drupal by coming up with a Magento module and a few essential native Magento blocks. The integration is elaborate up to the level of rendering Magento as a Drupal page.

There has been a lot of interest by the Magento and Drupal communities for such an integration to take place. This is certainly going to be picking up a lot of steam in the weeks ahead.

I think that this is a great idea for the Drupal community. Personally, I like Ubercart, but feel as though it is very module heavy. The one site that I installed it on doesn't run nearly as fast as it should be. If the developers can build some awesome modules/blocks to integrate with it then that solution could blow eCommerce and Ubercart out of the water. Since it runs on PHP and MySQL it could be installed on the same server and run independently. I think this could turn into something really incredible. We'll see what this summer holds in store!

Library booked for March 29th

So I contacted SLC Public Library about reserving a room for Sat March 29th, and they don't have any openings till late in the afternoon. Apparently if you want to meet there you need to book pretty early. I think our options are:

Meet another Saturday, perhaps April 12th, and reserve the library now.

Meet somewhere else.

I know Andrew offered the conference room at DATC, up in Kaysville. Are people willing to drive north for that? It's only an hour from Provo. Or do we have any other offers on places to meet for a group of 10-15 people?

Ubercart Attributes Question

Hey guys,

I just launched a site on Ubercart last week and the customer had a few questions regarding Ubercart Attributes. Attributes on Ubercart are the dropdown selectors on each product page to specify which type of product you want (i.e. color, size, etc that would see if you were buying a t-shirt). Anyway, on this site that I did there are multiple attribute dropdowns on some of the products. My question is: how hard would it be to tell Drupal to remove some of the other attributes based on the dropdown? The first attribute will allow them to simplify the product and get the basic version which then makes the rest of the attributes unnecessary.

Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing that maybe an if-then statement would work, but it may be an Ubercart hack. I found a few topics on their website, but there's no resolution to the discussion. Thoughts?

--Andrew

Support Question: How can I expose my drupal calendar (block) on a static html site?

Hi all,

Hope you don't mind me brainstorming with you but I figured:
1) this has proven to be a collection of bright Drupal heads.
2) i may actually get a response here ... no such luck in the Drupal forums.

Anyway, I'm looking for a way to expose the calendar block (from one site) as a block on a static HTML site.

I'm thinking I might have to write a module that periodically dumps the calendar HTML into a static file that can be included using a server-side include or javascript.

Any one else have a better idea?

Thanks,

Talks about a few modules that they are getting ready to release in the next little while. Course Designer being one of them and Assignment Studio is another one. I didn't have a ton of time to look through the site but after watching a few of the screencasts it looks pretty promising.

Some Ideas

I was thinking we could start discussing what we want in our next meeting (March hopefully). A couple ideas that were discussed quite a bit were multisite configuration, SCORM, and probably more that Im just spacing right now. A couple of ideas that I have thought could be helpful as well are Drupal 6, and AJAX in Drupal.

If we could have someone with some good experience on one of those topics, then we could have them put together a mini-presentation. Then we could turn it into a discussion type setting, where we give our own concepts or ask questions. I have been working with Drupal 6 somewhat on my own projects. If Drupal 6 is a topic wanted, I could try a little presentation on changes from Drupal 5 to 6. However, I am personally really interested in the multisite configuration, since I have not attempted to set that up yet.

Hopefully, we could also include maybe presentations of a completed project by a member (or members) once a month as well. See some of the custom modules created, themes created, contributed modules used, and other items of interest.

What thoughts do other people have to try to get this group up and going consistently?

Hey Utah Drupallers,

So if you haven't already, click the "My account" tab above and let us know a little about ya! While you're at it, upload a pic -- It would be nice to put faces with the names :-)

SCORM for Drupal?

Just wanted to let the group know about some Drupal SCORM news that got in my e-mail tonight. I'm not really sure what to make of it because the site doesn't contain much information. The only info I found was that it was a SCORM Player build on Flex 3 (Adobe) for Drupal. Anyway, here's the link to check it out:

Utah County

I'm new to the Utah Drupal Group as of today and have reviewed past articles. I'm down in Spanish Fork and would love to see how many users are down here in Utah County. I saw the poll and saw there were quite a few. I think it's great to get have a big meeting every so often, but would anyone like to meet up that is from Utah County?

I use to live up in Logan and there is no way I would have come clear to Salt Lake for a Drupal meeting. I wonder if it would be smart to break our Group into sub groups and potentially have at least quarterly meetups? This might help grow the group and even create better participation. Maybe I'm missing some smaller Groups that have been put together. I saw a Southern Utah Group I believe.

I know in Utah County I already have a location in American Fork that has been approved for Drupal Meetings and most likely they will be a major Utah Drupal contributor when they can. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

We came, we saw, we talked Drupal.

The Utah Drupal group got together for an introductory meeting on Saturday, February 9. It was a good turnout especially when compared to attempts to meet in years past.

We were all pretty impressed with the amount of Drupal talent in the state. Many of the attendees are making a living managing Drupal sites for companies, educational institutions, and political parties.

We all agreed to a regular schedule of meetings going forward. Future meetings will be centered around a Drupal presentation about a topic of interest and will probably be held at the Salt Lake City Library.

Names of Drupaliers from front to back, left to right:
Walt, Cliff, Kevin, Andrew, Christopher, Bret, Carl, Craig, Kyle
[Hope I [kyle] got your names right :> Fix what's wrong + add links to your user page]

Unfortunately I [Walt] gave a bad URL during the meeting. My example of a site which appears to be a well-integrated bunch of free software is actually SummitPost .

Senior Web Developer | The American Academy

Contact: employment [at] taaschools.net

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

The American Academy is looking for a Senior Web Developer to join our team. The chosen candidate will be responsible for building the web presence necessary for The American Academy to deliver a high-touch, high-quality learning experience to our teachers, students and applicants.

Our ideal candidate has strong web commerce, web design, user interface and technology integration expertise, with an interest in online education and social entrepreneurship.

As our web developer, you'll have the opportunity to help define and build out a cohesive, student-friendly environment using open-source
tools and frameworks.

About Our Company:

“High dropout rates are a silent epidemic afflicting our nation’s high schools. The dropout epidemic in the United States disproportionately affects young people who are low-income, minority, urban, single-parent children attending large, public high schools in the inner city. But the problem is not unique to young people in such circumstances. Nationally, research puts the graduation rate between 68 and 71 percent, which means that almost one-third of all public high school students in America fail to graduate.”

Source: The Silent Epidemic, A report by Civic Enterprises in association with Peter D. Hart Research Associates for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, March 2006

Read that again. One third of all public high school students in America fail to graduate. In 2003, there were 3.5 million people between the ages of 16 and 25 who did not have a high school diploma and were not enrolled in school. When the age range is expanded to include all adults, there are between 40 and 60 Million people in America who did not graduate from high school.

You might think most of these people just aren't very smart. You'd be wrong. 70% of the dropouts surveyed in The Silent Epidemic said they were confident they could have graduated if they were inspired to work harder in school. 32% had to leave to get a job and make money for their family. 26% became parents. And 22% left because they had to care for a family member.

One of The American Academy's primary goals is to help these people earn a diploma and as a result enhance their lives. We are an online high school that provides flexible, affordable, accredited courses and a complete, accredited U.S. diploma program to high school-age and adult students worldwide. We do this through a public-private partnership with the Utah Electronic High School (UEHS), one of the nation’s first online high schools. UEHS has served more than 80,000 students since its inception in 1994.

About Our Work Environment:

Our culture and environment encourage people who want to make significant contributions, work on challenging assignments, and prefer an open-minded approach to work. As a startup we seek people who are not afraid to take on varied assignments and to help out wherever needed. Someone looking for a structured corporate environment with weeks of training before starting the job need not apply – at TAA we jump in, learn and get things done.

We have an exciting, open work environment that encourages team members to brainstorm, share ideas, try new things and learn from past experiences. We look for team members who can challenge the status quo, understand the bigger picture and make good decisions. We strive to help our employees achieve personal goals while contributing to the overall team effort.

Job Roles and Responsibilities:

Lead the development of cutting edge, scalable web sites. Use social networking tools as a way to improve the user experience and give students a sense of community. Work with team members and customers to launch new web based schools using our web framework. Work on simultaneous projects and project teams on timeline-based projects. Research new technologies and provide technical suggestions for updating existing architectures. Create visually interesting and engaging interfaces.

Desired Experience and Requirements:

5+ years experience with building scalable web-based, e-commerce solutions

Demonstrate mastery of more than one of the following: php, Perl, HTML/XHTML, JavaScript, CSS, Java, C/C++, .NET

Experience with open-source database platforms such as MySQL or PostgresSQL

Integration expertise using web services and XML

Experience working with content management systems such as Drupal, Joomla! or other OSS CMS frameworks is preferred but not required

Some basic Linux/Unix system administration skills

Experience packaging, deploying and maintaining real-time, web-based software solutions

Experience with online education software and systems is preferred but not required

Minimum Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Applying:

Can I show off a great website that I designed and implemented?

Can I adapt, learn new technologies and build solutions based on users' needs?

What does the statement, “Try New Things, Keep What Works” mean to me?

Have I been guilty of over-engineering a solution or developing a solution that is “elegant” (and unmaintainable)? What have I learned from that(those) experience(s)?

Do I find end users and their myriad issues and problems annoying and a distraction?

Can I articulate why open source software is a good choice for some things, and not for others?

Am I a <<fill in the blank here with a technology, development methodology or any other cause>> zealot?

Could I find Bangalore, Chennai, Ho Chi Minh City or Prague on a map?

Do I understand why offshore development is important? Do I understand its risks? Could I work in an environment that has some offshore developers?

Do I enjoy working in an evolving technology landscape, or am I uncomfortable with rapid change?

Why do I want to work for The American Academy?

Contact: employment [at] taaschools.net

New to Utah Group, New to Drupal

Hi - just joined this group, and am a Drupal newbie. I am involved with a new startup company in Salt Lake City and we're considering using Drupal for part/all of our web presence. Would love to hear about other users' experiences. Also, I may be in the market to hire a contractor to help us develop our site - anyone out there interested?

Drupal Designer, Customization, Developer | MasonicReferral

Building a site of referral services for a charity/social organization.

I’ll be using Drupal 5.1.
I believe that most everything can be done with the existing modules:
Subscribed, IM_Paypal, Fivestar or Jrating, Advertisment, Classified Ads, Job Search, Survey.

Also think I could get by with one of the available themes.

Site only needs one module complete to go live. Other modules/services will be added after.

Looking for contractor. Not a full time position.

Contact me at mark.bisaillon@masonicreferral.com or 630-839-9017 to learn more and to provide a quote.

Count me in

All right, that makes seven of us so far. I didn't know about this group, and have just created one for Utah. I'll probably delete it.

Anyway, anyone working on installing modules and customizing Drupal 5? I'm starting on it, and we could share ideas and tips.

Cheers!
