Exciting world changing project seeks enthusiastic developer | Demotix
Founded to promote freedom of speech and freedom on information around the world, Demotix enables freelance and amateur photojournalists and reporters to share their stories with the world and license their images to the global mainstream media.
Demotix, which launched in January 09, has over 7,000 members from over 120 countries around the world.
The site has been written in D6, many of your favourite modules and a fair few custom written ones, to create a site that's quite literally changing the world. In our short life so far we have :
- Won the Media Guardian Innovation Award 2009.
- had images smuggled out of North Korea.
- Some of the best coverage in the world of the war in Gaza, and recent Iranian Elections.
- Front pages of the New York Times, Guardian, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal and elsewhere.
- Been syndicated by AP, Reuters and EPA.
- Images used by U2 in their current tour.
- Images sold world wide from America to UK to the Himalayas !
We want to continue getting better, which is where you come in.
We are looking for a full time developer to join the London office (SW1E 5RS) to work on the day to day improvements to the site as well as periodic releases and other technical matters.
Responsibilities
- Software development using PHP5, MySQL, and the Drupal API.
- Drupal theme layer tweaks and improvements to the existing site.
- General bug hunting and fixing.
- Working with and evaluating 3rd party applications and services.
- Working closely with external development teams and management to help steer the technical direction of the site.
- Facilitating the London editorial and sales teams in their day to day use of the site.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Required
- Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn/get stuck in.
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or equivalent in experience.
- Knowledge of Drupal above the “I suck threshold” http://buytaert.net/drupal-learning-curve
- PHP and MySQL programming/coding knowledge/experience required.
- xhtml and CSS fundamentals for proper mark-up (cross browser).
- Experience and interest in open source projects and development.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently, but also good at collaboration, taking direction and working with others.
- Able to communicate on a high level in English.
Added bonus
- Javascript experience, especially JQuery.
- Linux, Apache, basic server administration knowledge.
- Database (MySQL) administration.
- Experience of the print / broadcast world.
- Able to speak more than one language.
- An “eye” for design.
- Flash programming.
- SCRUM experience.
- News obsessive
Money
We are a startup, and in the current climate thats a hard thing to be. We have budgeted between £20,000 and £27,500 for this position, where you fall on that scale will be dependent on your expectations and experience.
Additionally the successful applicant will have a trip to the up coming Drupalcon Paris (ticket, accommodation and transport from London) paid for if they are able to go.
