Website Forum Development | Freedom House

Expressions of Interest Due: 18:00 EST Wednesday, June 25th, 2008
Proposals Due: 18:00 EST Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Introduction:

Freedom House's Gozaar project has decided to upgrade its Farsi language forum tool. As a component of Freedom House's Gozaar site, the forum provides a space for Iranians and other Farsi speakers to discuss democracy, human rights, politics, and other issues affecting Iranians. In particular, Freedom House seeks to improve the usability of the forum and the quality of the Farsi language tools.

Project Objectives:

The project aims to select, customize, and implement a third‐party forum tool that will meet the following criteria:

Farsi language support: The tool should include a Persian language option, that will completely translate the tool in to correct and compelling Persian, including changing the direction and alignment of the page to accommodate a left‐to‐right language.

Customization of look and feel: The forum should include customization of templates and other look‐and‐feel components to closely match the look, feel, and color scheme of the primary Gozaar website.

Compelling user interface: The user interface for the forum should be user‐friendly. This would include a clear layout that emphasizes the most common user actions (such as posting comments or registering), image‐based buttons, and the ability to sort threads into broader categories.

English language support: The forum should allow users to write either using Farsi characters or English language characters.

WYSIWYG posting tool: The forum should include a true What‐You‐See‐Is‐What‐You‐Get tool for posting comments. This tool should include the ability to change the alignment of the text, and if possible, change the direction of the text, to allow users to change the default direction if they are writing using the English alphabet.

Adequate spam prevention: The forum should have adequate spam prevention tools, such as challenge‐response tests for unregistered users. The spam prevention tools should be tailored to Farsi users, including proper directionality and ability to complete them without using English‐language keyboards.

Anonymous posting: Users should be able to post anonymously. The forum tool should not require a valid e‐mail address for registration, and should allow users to post without registering.

Administrator tools: The forum should have administrator tools that will allow Freedom House staff to moderate posts, ban users and IP addresses, and create new topics for posts.

Proposals:

Vendor proposals should be sent electronically in OpenDocument, Microsoft Word, or PDF format by 18:00 EST Thursday, July 3rd, 2008, and must include the following sections:

Company mission, history, services, and people

Website forum and user interface design experience

Proposed project team and approach

Timeline (including milestones) and estimated cost for delivering

Two client references

Assessment criteria:

Each proposal will be assessed, at a minimum, according to the following criteria:

Completeness (as per the "Proposals" section above)

Qualifications, past experience, and suitability of proposed staff

Demonstration of understanding in terms of what needs to be done and proposed approach for doing it

Value for money (selection of the successful candidate may not necessarily be the lowest priced bid for work)

Vendor Selection:

Freedom House will make a final vendor selection for this work by 18:00 EST on Friday, July 11th, 2008.

Questions:

Questions regarding this document should be sent to akbari@freedomhouse.org.

Freelance Drupal help | Village Commons Community Center

An old client of mine, Village Commons Community Center (VCCC), in Gambrills, MD is looking for some freelance help on the site. They are a small local organization that rents out community space for events. It was one of the first Drupal sites I ever built and is still on 4.7. They are looking for someone to do an upgrade as well as do some functional tweaks to the site. Ideally, they can develop a relationship with someone so as they need things in the future they will have a reliable person who knows the site to step in. The would prefer someone who is in the DC/Baltimore area but they are definitely willing to work with folks that work remotely too.

The meat of the site is running off Events, Actions and Workflow modules along with a custom reservation module. It was the second module I ever wrote and, especially with an upgrade, chances are it will just need to be rewritten altogether. It was a long time ago so I'm fuzzy on the details but it may even be possible to largely replace it with CCK.

If interested, please contact me through my g.d.o contact form and I'll get you in touch with them. Thanks!

June 25th Drupal Lab

We will be having the next Washington DC Drupal Lab on June 25th from 7 to 9pm. Like usual it is the last Wednesday of the month, and like usual it will be at Affinity Lab in Adams Morgan. The lab is located at 2451 18th St NW in Adams Morgan, and the entrance is to the right of The Diner.

Presentations will start promptly at 7:15pm, and all attendees are invited to talk about their latest work with Drupal, whether it is building simple sites or developing complicated modules. We are going to keep things very informal, and each presenter should talk for about 5 minutes, with time for discussion afterwards.

A projector and wi-fi will be provided, so feel free to bring your laptop so you can easily share things with the group. We have several different types of apple video connectors, but it might not hurt for you to bring your own if you have it so we don't have to fumble around too much.

Beer and soft drinks will be provided, though unlike some previous meetups there will be no food. Feel free to stop at one of the many restaurants in the area and bring you snack or dinner with you.

See you all next week!

Reminder: DC Drupal Meetup Tonight at 7:15 pm

Just wanted to remind everyone that the June Drupal Meetup is happening tonight at 7:15 pm at Stetsons. We'll be meeting at the upstairs bar - when you enter the bar, walk right up those steps and you'll see us.

As usual, we'll kick off the meetup with a round of 5-minute lightening round talks. This is a chance to share an interesting project or new module development that you've been working on. Specific examples of how Drupal worked well for a specific client need are strongly encouraged. We like to keep these short and sweet so speakers will be timed and cut off at 5 minutes, but there will be plenty of time afterwards to catch up with interested people and talk in more detail after the presentations.

So far, a few people have volunteered to present. If you'd like, please post your topic here or speak up at the meetup tonight.

Young will talk about what he did on the recently relaunched World Resources Institute website with the context module.

Alex will talk about his work with installer profiles.

Please speak up if you have something to share.

Tonight's meetup will be at

Stetson's
1610 U Street, NW
Four blocks from U Street metro stop
Short walk from Dupont Circle
Internet available

Hope to see you tonight!

Developer | EchoDitto

Hi there! EchoDitto is searching for outstanding web developers based in either New York, Boston or Washington, DC to join our team of technology enthusiasts and progressive thinkers to assist on a number of exciting, high-profile projects. This position will be responsible for developing innovative Web-based tools for progressive online activism and community building. Our software architects work closely with their strategy architect counterparts to develop specifications and make recommendations on the use of new and emerging technologies. Programming, user interface design and database familiarity are all core elements of this position. Dealing with Microsoft technologies is not.

While we're immediately looking for temporary help, we're also looking to hire full time. All salaried positions at EchoDitto come with excellent benefits and time pre-allocated for catching up with Engadget, Twittering or compiling ncurses for your iPhone (which, by the way, we gave everyone at last year's Christmas party.)

If you're looking to work at a small company that pairs the energy and flexibility of a startup with the stability of a proven, fast growing business, you'll feel right at home with our highly-motivated team of technologists.
What you'll need:

* BS in computer science or a related field, or significant equivalent experience.
* 3 years minimum experience with HTML/XHTML and CSS.
* 2 years minimum Web programming experience, including PHP, ASP or JSP.
* 1 year minimum experience working with relational database systems such as MySQL, MSSQL or Oracle and a good working knowledge of SQL.
* Self-starter with strong self-management skills.
* Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
* Ability to lift 30 pounds (or 10 Macbook Airs)

Other things we get excited about:

* Experience developing on and extending popular web authoring tools.
* Experience developing and/or implementing open source software projects.
* UNIX shell experience and a working knowledge of Subversion, CVS or related tools.
* Comprehensive Drupal development knowledge.
* Sweet foosball skills.
* An unnatural love of participatory politics.
* An absolutely ridiculous sense of humor.

If you're interested, either use my personal contact form or apply online. We're looking forward to hearing from you!

Office Expansion/Foosball Party at Development Seed: Thursday, June 12

We're throwing an office expansion/foosball party after work on Thursday and we wanted to invite the DC Drupal community to join us. We'll be serving beer and snacks, and playing several highly competitive rounds of foosball. Of course in between all that, we'll be talking about what we're all working on and new tech developments that have caught our eye. We're hoping that some old friends and new faces from around the city come out.

We'll crack open the first beers around 6:30 pm on Thursday, and the first game will start around 7:00 pm. You can find more information and directions to our office here.

Hope to see you on Thursday!

Next DC Drupal Meetup June 16th

Before everyone takes off to escape the heat this weekend (99 degrees already!!!), I wanted to announce that the next Drupal Meetup is scheduled for Monday, June 16th from 7:15 to about 9:00 pm.

After many months of bar hopping in search of a great place to have our monthly meetups, we can happily say we've found one: Stetsons Bar and Grill. We held last month's meetup there and it worked out fabulously - plenty of space for everyone, a private room, music control (i.e. quiet during presentations), own bartender, metro accessible, and after meetup entertainment in a foosball and pool table. And from now on, we'll have internet access too : ) If this continues to work out, we'll keep the meetups here. But please give us feedback and suggestions on other venues if you have them.

The meetup will follow the standard format of a round of five minute lightening talks followed by lots of time to get to know other Drupal developers, users, and newbies. If you'd like to present, post your topic here. I'll post a tentative agenda of presentations later next week.

Mark your calendars - Monday, June 16, at 7:15 pm. Hope to see you then!

On Upcoming here

Drupal Lab May 28 (Tomorrow!)

Hey everyone! Sorry for the late posting of this event to the site, but there will indeed be a Drupal Lab tomorrow night from 7-9pm at Affinity Lab, which is located in the heart of Adams Morgan at 2451 18th Street NW on the 2nd Floor. The entrance it to the right of The Diner.

Since I have been out of town recently, I have not been able to arrange to serve any food for the event, but beer and other drinks will be provided. Feel free to stop off at any of the local restaurants (Amsterdam Falafel, Julia's Empanadas, Tryst) beforehand and grab something to bring with you to the Lab.

Presentations will begin promptly at 7:15, and I am looking forward to seeing what people have been working on recently. We are looking to support and engage people of all Drupal experience levels, so please think about making a short (5 minute) presentation of what you are working on no matter if it is a black-belt drupal hack or more basic work, like figuring out how to use a neat module on your site.

A projector and wi-fi will be provided, so feel free to bring your laptop so you can easily share things with the group. We have several different types of apple video connectors, but it might not hurt for you to bring your own if you have it so we don't have to fumble around too much.

Since I did not get around to posting this event to groups.drupal sooner, we might not get the massive turnout of past lab meetups. However, even if that is the case, I still urge you to come, since a smaller group would allow us to spend more time on the issues that are important to YOU!

See everyone tomorrow!

Introduce ChinaOpen

Three months into planning, overcoming all kinds of odds and challenges (including the latest challenge of the Chinese firewall!) -- we are pressing ahead with ChinaOpen.

And on the eve of returning to China to iron out the logistic details, I would like to point you to http://www.china-osl.com and watch the Flash-video, which captures in essence, our message, spirit and goal of our ChinaOpen initiative.

In short, this summer, for 2-months, we will round up 50-200 Chinese students to work on Open-Source projects from worldwide. Currently in two tracks:
1. Drupal, and
2. Adobe – ColdFusion, Flex and AIR

While the web-site is NOT complete, that it really is a “Development snapshot” (with Drupal/Flex), that the details such as how to submit an idea, and “legal terms” as well as the schedule is not even finished. I would like you: my friends, colleagues and acquaintances, to help me get the words out there, so that you can understand what we are up to – and hopefully through you, we can get various ideas/projects prepared for the students to work on.

I will be back in 4-weeks, at which time we will blow the roofs off via a developer conference in the Washington DC Convention Center for which we are sponsoring, under the ChinaOpen logo, (probably) complete with Chinese lion-dancing.

Let’s work together to change China, for the better.

Kind regards,
John Zhu

Next Meetup?

Hey guys,

Many thanks to our friends at Affinity Lab for letting us use their space! I not only had a great time, but was able to get a lot done while getting to know many of you better.

In fact, since I had such a good time, let's have another meetup! I think it'd be awesome if we had one on May 12th. There (may even have been / was) mention of one on May 12th, but figured I'd throw this out there just in case something's changed.

Well, ladies and gents, it's been a pleasure, and I look forward to seeing you all soon!

Oh, and that error I was getting on the Forums was a result of the .htaccess file, not necessarily Drupal. Things are fixed now and it's running beautifully! Thanks to everyone who pitched in, esp Vijay.

Ciao for now,
Brian

How can China be of services to Drupal -- practically?

We have been pondering about how to best evangelize China into the Drupal community -- and in droves.

After operating in China for two years, and despite of our best trying such as holding the Drupal BootCamp event in Beijing http://www.drupalchina.org/node/3638, our biggest challenge is the practicality of getting Chinese acquainted with Drupal -- BEFORE we can even talk about having them participate into the DROP program, let alone directly contribute into module or theme writing.

Meanwhile, after our Boston DrupalCon session http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/session/drupal-china-how-who-and-why, we were in London for CFUnited Europe http://europe.cfunited.com/, during which we shared our thinking to run a two months long, 50-100 college-students, China Open-Source Summer-Camp (ChinaOpen), in Beijing this summer with excitement built around the sites and sound of the 2008 Olympics.

Within the first two hours, we received 7 Open-Source projects to work on.

That was 1-month ago. And we have been contemplating about how this ChinaOpen can be of direct service to the Drupal community ever since.

Our latest epiphany/idea is to solicit ideas/projects to build web-sites for the non-profit community -- this summer -- in order to “graduate” the ChinaOpen participants into the DROP/SoC program, (say) next summer and give back to a few deserving organizations that need to get the word out but don't have the budget or resources. We imagine some participants may even be able to directly contribute to writing Drupal modules after this.

We could obviously open to For-Profit (kind of like the old “dotcom”) style web-sites/ideas, but we figure this would open the flood-gate too much.

What do you think?

Ideas, suggestions, critics, helping out?

Finally, we are trying to decide, whether this ChinaOpen should be pursued forward this summer, since logistically speaking, we are rapidly approaching the absolute deadline time to get the words out, and arrange all the logistic issues as May will be here in 2-weeks -- which is our other way to ask, for those of you who have participated either DROP or SoC before:
-- What kind of general rule-of-thumb in terms of operational-support that we should estimate?
-- For example, for each student, how much "mentoring" and backoffice support that we would need to factor?

Thanks!

Washington, DC Drupal Meetup, April 14th

This coming Monday on April 14th we'll hold the next Washington, DC Drupal Meetup at James Hoban's on Dupont Circle.

Last month we had a great conversation here about how we can make these meetups most productive for everyone. A few of us have put our heads together and came up with the idea of having two meetups a month with different focuses.

Drupal Meetups - These will take place in a bar and center mostly on networking and connecting people. We'll have the standard lightening talks but will be focused on discussing real world solutions to user problems and Drupal news. We want to keep these talks accessible for Drupal users and people exploring Drupal, so detailed tech talk can happen one on one after the talks.

Drupal Labs - This is your change to dig into the meat of code, show off the latest module you wrote, and pose questions to a technical audience for some hands on help. The lab is tailored to people with Drupal experience, or who want to dive right in and learn.

We hope that by better targeting the events like this, people will be able to really get the most out of them. This is very much a work in progress so please post your suggestions, comments, and feedback so we can fine tune these.

Back to the meetup... We'll be getting together on Monday, April 14 at James Hoban's (new Irish bar) on Dupont Circle at 7:00 pm.

We'll kick off the meetup with a round of 5-minute lightening talks focusing on real world solutions that have been built with Drupal. We all know Drupal does amazing things, so let's look at some of the tailored tools we've built to help our clients out. Here's what we've got lined up so far:

Connecting a geographically dispersed microfinance network with an online portal

Publishing content in right to left languages like Arabic and Hebrew

Demo of the online community MothersClick and their new community API / Facebook-esque features (to be confirmed)

Have something show off? Post it in the comments. Dan from 1 Well will also be there to talk about how he's helping (and how you can too) to build wells in communities that need them.

Details:
James Hoban's at the back bar
1 Dupont Circle, Washington DC
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Map
Wireless connection available!

Hope to see you on Monday!

Drupal Developer | NomadsLand LLC

We are an online social issue film delivery LLC based in Virginia. Our URL is www.nomadsland.com.

We have been working for six months on our Beta design site to be assembled in Drupal 5.x using Amazon S3 for video content delivery of h264 progressive download files.

This project is very cutting edge as we will be combining offline social networking with HD video delivery.

Please take a careful look at our site and then contact us and please compose your response carefully. Based on this response we will send you our official detailed RFP document.

Only serious talented developers need apply. We've budgeted between $7,500 and $15,000 for the full design and build.

=====

OVERALL OBJECTIVE:
NomadsLand is a website that facilitates online downloads and streaming of international social issue films which encourage international social issue dialogue. Some say we are where advocacy meets arthouse. We aspire to be something like an online documentary film festival and alternative documentary outlet. (Manifesto: http://nomadsland.com/content/view/56/138/) Our main focus is distributing feature length documentaries which have made it into prominent film festivals over the past 10 years. The new site will also create online & offline geographic-based social groups for film screenings and campaigns for engagement a la Meetup.com. (Reference: http://movies.meetup.com/432)

One of NomadsLand’s chief functions is to make available films found in reputable international documentary film festivals, which are hardly ever seen by the general public. We are well connected in the international documentary community. Several thousand international social issue documentary films exist and are just sitting on shelves. We want to make them available through VOD and group screenings. Most of these films have never gotten significant distribution and are unavailable on most commercial services (Amazon Unbox, iTunes, etc.) because these platforms are generally closed to independent filmmakers whose work isn’t overly commercial.

Another chief goal is to provide new revenue streams for struggling independent filmmakers, online video creators, filmmakers and video journalists through a more efficient system of film distribution.

Brainstorming User Scenarios for Future Usabilty Testing

Becca Scollan posted briefly here about a student project where they are considering doing some usability testing with Drupal at the University of Baltimore, which has the possibility to be expanded further in the summer. There are some preparation time constraints that at this point are leading her group to do consider completely replicating the scenario that was done at UMN, and it would be nice if some of the other admin test cases and tasks were fleshed out a bit more so that some new ground could be explored and to streamline the process a bit better.

There was talk at the UMN Usability session at Drupalcon that it would have been beneficial to set up the users with an initial "easy win" task that boosted their confidence -- like setting up an "About Us" page with a primary navigation link at the top. Webchick also pointed out that there were a number of task ideas that were discussed on this wiki page that were not executed, and that are still listed there with strikeout markup.

The intention of this wiki page is to flesh out some potential admin-related user scenarios that could be used now with this potential opportunity at the University of Baltimore. It could also serve as a general brainstorming place to flesh out other usability scenarios to be tested with other usability lab time as it becomes available.

Webchick mentioned that a big thing for them in creating the scenarios is that they wanted to make sure to avoid any "key words" that would help people clue in on what menu item to press. So instead of saying "Add a piece of workshop content", they say "Create a form for people to create workshops." So the tasks that we would normally describe in "Drupal" terms, need to be expressed in "human" terms since describing the tasks with the proper terminology would just become a game of keyword searching.

catch suggested the following things that weren't covered at UMN but might be interesting:
* menu module - both within node/add and the admin interface - there's a task for this but no-one got to it :)
* book module, taxonomy and forums (drag and drop, hierarchy, stuff like that).
* content administration - front page, sticky, published/unpublished/mass-updating

So if people here could help flesh out some specific tasks and ideal paths in the same format as listed here under the Site Maintainer Scenario & Tasks headings, then that would help out a lot

Site Maintainer Scenario

Tasks

Hi DC area students and Summer of Coders,

On Thursday Development Seed is hosting an event on Google's Summer of Code for Drupal. Past and future participants will be on hand to talk more about Drupal and Google's Summer of Code and to guide students through the application process. Specifically, we'll

Walk through the application process and deadlines, and give tips on how to get your project accepted

Help pair students with potential mentors who are experts in areas they want to work in

Discuss your project ideas and give feedback, and discuss ideas coming from the community

Also, if you've been part of a Summer of Code project in the past, come out and share your experience with this year's students.

Find out more here:

http://www.developmentseed.org/blog/2008/mar/18/googles-summer-code-how-...

We are a nonprofit currently in the initial phases of creating requirements and scope for the conversion of a Cold Fusion application to Drupal. This will be the first of a mutiple phase web build out with a July target roll out.

Nexpo Meetup, anyone?

For those who don't know, Nexpo is a gigantic trade show put on by the Newspaper Association of America every year. Over at my day job, I'm a member of the NAA, and this interview was with the NAA monthly trade magazine.

As a result, I will be at Nexpo, invited by Rich Forsgren to appear on a panel to discuss "Content Management -- A Technology Perspective." I will be the open-source voice on the panel, which should include industry heavyweights SaxoTech, DTI, and other vendors of proprietary software.

I will, as usual, be taking the stance that open-source is good for business and that it aligns with the core goals of journalism: namely the free exchange of information in order to build better communities. This should be a lot of fun.

For those of you in the DC area, I will be in town for three nights [April 12 - 14], so make your dinner reservations now.

March DC Drupal Meetup

Hey, everyone! Since the feedback from the February meetup has been very positive, I was thinking that we could get together for a similar event on Wednesday, March 26th from 7-9pm at Affinity Lab in Adams Morgan.

We will likely continue in the standard format with a series of 5-minute "lightning" presentations by anyone who has something to show off to the group, and give time for the group to ask questions and interact with each other. A projector and wi-fi will be provided so you can easily use your laptop to access things online and show them to the group.

We are planning on starting at 7pm (and ending around 9pm), which should give everyone a chance to arrive from work. The address is 2451 18th St NW, and the entrance is to the right of The Diner. Push the buzzer for Affinity Lab when you arrive.

The nearest metro to Adams Morgan is the Woodley Park stop on the Red line, however keep in mind there is a 10-15 minute walk from there to the lab. There is also a bunch of buses that can drop you off right at 18th and Columbia from places like Metro Center, Dupont Circle, and the Ust Corridor, so check the Metro bus map before heading out.

Since the lab is not a restaurant or bar, we will be purchasing drinks and snacks ahead of time, which seemed to work well last time around. For this meetup I am thinking of getting it catered by Java Green, which deliciously provided food for another event that I recently attended.

We are again looking for sponsors to help cover the cost of food and drink. Please contact me if you or your organization are willing to chip in and support the meetup.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Mike

The National Democratic Institute is looking for a creative and flexible programmer to build cool tools that help our partners around the world create more transparent, accountable and democratic governance. The programmer will work with our ICT Team and our country teams to design and build software for governments, political parties, civic action groups and networks of political reformers. This is a great opportunity to be on the front lines of applying technology to politics in the developing world. NDI works in 65 countries and is a leader in using technology to strengthen democratic governance and increase political participation. On web projects we tend to be a drupal shop; previous work with drupal is highly desired.
