Sun Microsystems, Acquia and Code Positive are pleased to invite you to a half day event focusing on the benefits and challenges of using Drupal in education.

The session will cover a number of topics relevant to the deployment of Drupal in education:

Suitability of Drupal for brochure websites, course management and delivery, community building, and sharing of information

Which versions of Drupal to use and the recommended modules based upon your needs

Designing and implementing the right architecture to meet scalability and security requirements

Commercial, Enterprise Class support and services available for Drupal and associate infrastructure

Whether you are evaluating Drupal or running in production, this is a great opportunity to learn more about Drupal deployments, put your questions to the experts, and connect with the London Drupal community.

Drupal For education is free, but event registration is required:

Presenter pool

There is an interesting write-up about remote presentations on the Open Media g.d.o. made by Kevin (kreynen@drupal.org). From their experiences it seems like it should be feasible to make a habit out of remote Drupal presentations.

Somebody told me that they have a list of presenters that they can draw from for Drupal events (e.g. DUG, Drupalcamp, etc). I would like to build a global resource where Drupal event organizers can draw from. Are there any other resources out there that maybe already do this?

I'm thinking in the direction of a Drupal presenters exchange, where you can indicate that you are willing to present about a certain topic, it could be integrated with the event functionality at g.d.o.

--

I blog and Tweet

Roadmap for making Biblio use CCK nodes

Introduction

Currently Biblio is still using custom node types. As a result it is necessary to build bridge modules to enable integration of functionality that by default already is available to CCK content types. Also since Biblio has developed it's own functionality ecosystem there are a couple of functionalities that currently only exist for Biblio nodes.

CCK is the general trend which more and more modules have been following in the past months/year. It handles a lot of the backend stuff for you when it comes to storing, displaying and exporting your data. (this does not apply to biblio only, but all the modules in general). The trend has materialized by the fields API being integrated into core for Drupal 7. Another benefit is that porting the modules to CCK in Drupal 6 means less hassle to port the modules to Drupal 7 as this will be a common task - you can almost be sure that there will be an automatic porting process.

Potential impact

Many modules enhance the existing CCK implementation some examples are:

Views

FeedAPI

RDF CCK

Duplications/extra modules that are currently necessary because of Biblio not being CCK:

oai2forcck a module provides an implementation the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) for Drupal with support for CCK content types and their fields. This module is a sister for oai2

biblio facets provides integration with faceted search

MARC is the standard format for bilbliographic records for libraries ([RJ]:Biblio can now read MARC files directly)

Flexible date field as requested in the following issue

There are some efforts that go in this direction:
http://drupal.org/project/scholarly

This integration question has been coming up frequently (some are duplicates):
http://drupal.org/node/116817
http://drupal.org/node/86086
http://drupal.org/node/220063
http://drupal.org/node/220005
http://drupal.org/node/234891
http://drupal.org/node/358865
http://drupal.org/node/320429

If in stead of building bridge modules we concert our efforts we should be able to reengeneer Biblio so that it works with CCK nodes instead.

Documentation

Here comes

a diagram of the current database tables and inter-relations

link to CCK Doxygen documentation

Practical

Evaluate the inherit project as a dependency for CCK Biblio

One of the main road blocks is the lack of field inheritance functionality in CCK. The inherit project however aims to provide this functionality (e.g. instead of defining all the separate content types 1 by 1).

work out specification for the input form structure

We need a plan to deal with the changing of the form field labels based on the publication type.

Develop a technical spec for all the content types

porting of the content types to CCK

updating the data manipulation functions

Biblio has built in functions to pull data from different sources, these data collection functions will have to be updated

Helping out

If you are interested in being part of a code sprint for CCK Biblio add your name to the list:
-Pronovix team - Kristof Van Tomme and Ernő Zsemlye
-Agaric Design Collective - Benjamin Melançon
-True Wheel - Mark Lilly (drupal id: marqpdx)

Other people that are involved in the discussion are:
-Ron Jerome
-Stephane Corlosquet
-Robert Haschke
Drupal Dojo education and training track

Now that the Dojo has it's very own 100-seat-capable DimDim account for online learning and collaboration (access info here), there should be all sorts of ways we can leverage the platform (and 1700+ members) to demonstrate the various uses of Drupal in educational settings and collaborate on tools and solutions.

One thought would be to start an ongoing Drupal education track similar to what we've started with media and arts. If not stand-alone, possibly Drupal in Education could be a subset of a larger Drupal learning and training track.

Any interest in such a thing?

Sharepoint look-alike theme / skin for education sites

Just wanted to announce the availability of a Sharepoint-clone theme for Drupal, which I imagine could be quite suitable for educational websites et.c. It's available here The page itself is currently using the theme.

The same skin is ported to MediaWiki too, so you can have a completely integrated look-and-feel between Drupal and MediaWiki (+ Sharepoint of course). The MediaWiki counterpart can at the moment be seen here.

Drupal Classes or Courses at 3rd level/Uni/College, online or face to face?

Does anyone know of academic institutions offering classes or courses which cover Drupal?

Both face to face and/or online?

NB: Not courses using Drupal as a medium, rather: Drupal as the subject matter.

I would love to hear from lecturers who are planning courses, or who have taught Drupal in their courses. I would like to see examples, how they fit in to the existing academic programmes in their institutions, how they promote it, and what the outcomes have been.

Thank you!

FP7 funding for exchanging people between academia and industry

At drupalcon we had the opportunity to merge our BoF. Today we like to go back to the IAPP: exchanging people between academia and industry. We have a skype conference to see if people like to work on an exchange program.

Agenda

The agenda will depend on the comments.

I suggest you explain your interest. Are you part of a research team or are you a commercial team? What would be your interest in (research goal, partner) ?

About IAPP

The Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways Focus on small exchange program where industry and academia exchange staff (in both directions). The goal is to create small groups (1 university, 1 company) with a specific research goal. The call will support the costs for traveling and living abroad. Their is also a bit of resources for workshops as well (can't be the focus of the call!)

About the merge

Our BoF was about supporting research and development with Drupal, by investigating a FP7 IAPP. The other BoF was Hacking climate change by semantic web. It was nice to combine the incentive to support research and a concrete research idea. It may be a nice idea to have hacking climate change as one of the research goals. Still its up to you.

p.s. Don't forget to signup

Training and certifications session@ szeged2008.drupalcon

At drupalcon Szeged their was an interesting suggestion to define RDF for Drupal curriculums. Check the presentation.

Their was the suggestion to write down bullets of what need to be in the curriculum. To me however, their it is not yet enough clarity to start creating bullets. I'm looking forward to a discussion. Whatever your point, let this post be an invitation for a discussion.

I'm aware that most training would be very focused to learn a snippet of knowledge on how to get-things-done with Drupal. The thing is, I'm running an academic course. The two should not be incompatible. I belief a good and flexibility RDF should cover a broad range of training.

During the meeting it was suggested to define a difficulty level of the training in the RDF. I've been thinking about this. A difficulty level could apply to a small snippet of knowledge. For example, a novice/expert course on views. We could have a difficulty level 'academic', but than again an academic course can be novice/expert level too. How about having an education-level next to difficulty-level? Or maybe level should be a container. For example an audience-level (developers, designs, manager, etc.) could be very relevant as well. I don't think anything should be a level, like duration and prerequisites seems to belong to another set. Does this make sense to you?

Using Drupal for surveys - looking for advice

Curious about any examples of people using Drupal to implement surveys of user groups on a site. Any experience of using Webform http://drupal.org/project/webform ? It seemed I wanted to be able to represent some of the information in Views, so I didn't want to use Web Form. I even wondered would it be better, going ahead, to use an external service?

So far, I've made a survey involving 25 questions using CCK fields, and 9 field groups which will be a muti-step form- since it's very long on the page. Just wondered if I'm missing any tricks.

Just have loads of questions about making a survey, how to manage it in the end... anyone have some advice about setting up a survey using Drupal?

Seemed like the place to ask!

Drupal and Education at the Drupalcon'08 in Szeged

I just submitted a session/BoF/panel proposal for DrupalCon in Szeged suggesting ways of helping Drupal make greater inroads in the education sector (including research): http://szeged2008.drupalcon.org/sessions/what-does-education-sector-need.... Any feedback is appreciated.

I thought I'd start a thread where we could discuss what else the Drupal in Education/Drupal in Academia and Research crowd can do in Szeged. Please post comments with suggestions/ideas for other sessions, BoFs, or just let each other know who's coming.

Drupal4Lib BoF (ALA Anaheim)

Okay, we'll be meeting for our Drupal4lib BoF on Sun. (6/29, 3:30p-5:00p) -- in the LITA Bloggers Room (till they chase us out).

This will be an informal get-together of people to talk about how they've implemented Drupal or how they'd like to implement Drupal. Whether you're a newbie or pro is fine. Everyone is welcome. I'll see if I can dig up a projector so people can do brief presentations of their projects.

Please leave comments and suggestions.

Scheduling/Calendar

Hi all,
I am developing a science collaboration site using Drupal 6. I am interested in implementing a calendar and scheduling feature where the user can not only subscribe to various calendars or modify a personal calendar on the site but can synchronize it to his existing google calendar or outlook calendar that the user normally would use (thereby avoiding the current problem of having multiple sites/programs each with a different function). I saw a few calendar modules (mostly for Drupal 5) but none seemed to offer the two-way synchronization that I am looking for. I'm just starting out with Drupal, so I apologize if I'm missing something obvious.
Thanks for any advice you might have.
Richard

FP7 BoF on next Drupalcon?

FP7 is the EU instrument for funding research, see the introduction on wikipedia or go to the primary site You will notice the Drupal development can fit many calls in general but non in particular. The first goal is to figure out if enough people in the community are interested in EU funded Drupal research. I've made a list with some initiatives that looked relevant, but please be free to give your own opinion or to show your interest.

As the whole idea came with the semantic web interest after last Drupalcon, the main search was to support workshops and meetings for it.

Industry-Academia partnerships and pathways
This action seeks to open and foster dynamic pathways between public research organizations and private commercial enterprises, in particular SMEs. It can be used for: Networking activities, organisation of workshops and conferences to facilitate sharing of knowledge and culture between the participants.

Initial training network
Related to the many training initiatives in the Drupal community, this call may be relevant. This action aims to improve early-stage researchers' career prospects in both the public and private sectors, thereby making research careers more attractive to young people. This will be achieved through a transnational networking mechanism, aimed at structuring the existing high-quality initial research training capacity. Next to the networking activities, organization of workshops and conferences, it aims also at recruitment of researchers.

Research infrastructures
This initiative not part of "people" but of "capacities".It aims to help to create new research infrastructures of pan-European interest in all fields of science and technology. ICT-based e-Infrastructures - supporting a number of interrelated topics designed to foster the emergence of a new research environment in which ‘virtual communities’ share and exploit the collective power of European scientific and engineering facilities. Although when you read about e-Infrastructures It seems not to fit. I'm still investigating if the Drupal way may fit.

We are seeking a developer to assist us with creating a new or re-purposing an existing dynamic research repository that can capture various case studies, articles, websites and other semantic information from a multi- member research team. Our focus is green building and sustainability to which we use this research content to populate our online learning portal, develop curriculum and increase our consulting knowledge.

Some of the repository attributes would include:

Drupal based or Drupal friendly alternative (MySQL)

Able to recognize existing information as new content is being contributed.

Confidential modes for various levels of permission access

Dynamic to add major Categories and sub-categories to expand research scope

Tracks semantic data with relationships to other data

Dynamic means to expand data classification to tie into CRM (Sugar)

Able to deliver end data to multiple users and media outlets

We are eager to hear back of your abilities to assist us with this project or better yet, your success with a similar system that we can re-orientate to this particular subject field.
Using the EU framework program to support academic Drupal.

After Boston and the introduction of Long term Drupal, the semantic web has been getting a lot of attention. Kristof suggest expert meeting for semantic web in a recent post. I like the idea much, although I would not restricted it to semantic web (but as every one will be interested in it, it will be the focal point any way). I think a list of short goals (Drupal7 or Drupal8) versus long term goals are needed. The long term goals will require more than two years and experiments may get organized more collaborative than has been the case in the past.

Currently I'm taking up contact with the FP7 contact points to see if we can setup expert meetings. If you check the FP7 site, you'll notice it can fit many of the pillars in general but non in particular. Some creativity will be needed according to the contact point. ... To be continued

Drupal in public education ...

Greetings!

By day I'm the Webmaster at a mid to large size public school system here in the USA (Frederick County Public Schools, MD). I'm curious to know how many of you out there in Drupal-land are implementing Drupal sites in the public education sector. Some specific questions:

1) Do you support it (server-wise) in house or do you host outside/off campus?

2) Do you host on VPS/dedicated or shared? Linux or Windows?

3) Do you run multi-site configurations?

4) How long have you been running Drupal sites?

5) How did you originally implement the Drupal process/plan? Did you form smaller committees to discuss and plan implementation?

6) What type of environment did you move from (Dreamweaver based, ColdFusion, home grown CMS, etc?)?

Right now I'm trying to get a feel of who is using Drupal in the public education environment and for what purpose?

I look forward to your responses and starting a discussion on this - please send some examples of sites if you'd like.

Additionally, it was suggested that I cross-post this to the Drupal in Education and the Research and academia groups.

Thanks in advance!

-Trevor

Write-up on new education Drupal site

We recently created a community learning space for a web analytics class at BYU. We directed students to create individual blogs on commercial blogging platforms such as blogspot, wordpress, and elsewhere. We are then using FeedAPI to aggregate the student blogs and comments (see list of student feeds) into the community site. In addition, we're aggregating blogs from prominent web analytic experts (see list of expert feeds). A wiki and spot for announcements round out the list of features.

We choose to aggregate student blogs rather then have students write on Drupal as we wanted students to have a permanent record of their learning that they would take with them.

Design Principles

Our site design was guided by three learning principles.

Learning should be social

You learn best with friends. In a traditional classroom, it is difficult for a teacher to provide opportunities to their students to teach and learn from each other. Drupal made it easy to set up a place where students can share with each other what they're learning about web analytics.

Learn from experts

Learning is as much of learning to be something as learning about something. We wanted this class to be very practical and hands on. What better way to learn how to do web analytics then by looking over the shoulders of experts in the fields via their blogs.

Learning on demand

People learn in response to need. Its important not to force-feed learning but to encourage it by making available learning resources. As information is added to the site via blogs and the wiki, the site becomes an increasingly rich repository of information about web analytics. Students don't have to wait for class to learn but can learn directly from information on the site.

Results

The semester is still early but so far the results are looking promising. Blogging volume is growing and information from students and the expert bloggers are driving much of the conversation in the classroom.

URL to the site:
http://ebiz2.byu.edu/analytics

Also, a big thanks to the FeedAPI crew who made the site possible and to Bill Fitzgerald for providing the inspiration for aggregating student blogs (see here and here)

Drupal in Education BoF

I just submitted a proposal for a Drupal in Education Birds of a Feather session.

If you are attending the DrupalCon, come on over and read through the proposals, rate the existing proposals, and/or write one of your own.

If you would like to attend the BoF, I have started a list of possible topics to cover in the session description. As I say in the description, given Drupal's flexibility and the differing needs of people working within education, there will be plenty to talk about.

If, however, there is something you want to talk about/ask about, include it in the comments here, or voice your opinion over at the poll.

Final decisions on which sessions will run will be forthcoming in February.

Cheers,

Research tool for categorizing Drupal site content

This semester I've been involved in a research project at BYU studying the effects of using web2.0 tools powered by Drupal in the classroom (See http://isyscore.byu.edu/drupal). Now that our first semester with our pilot site is coming to a close, we're moving into the data gathering / analysis phase of research. To aid our research I've written a tool which let's an research easily categorize content created on a Drupal site.

See attached screenshots for more detail but here's a basic description. The module ties into the taxonomy module. The research goes to a node and reads the content then categorizes the content using categories/terms previously defined. Upon clicking submit, the research is automatically redirected the next node on the site that has not yet been categorized.

I'm releasing the code "as is". It hasn't been extensively tested so most likely has many bugs still. My real motivation for releasing the code is to see if there's enough interest to justify my continuing to work on it and to release it as a project.

So would anyone else have a need for a tool like this? Are there other possible use cases?

btw, change the name of the attached module to research_tools.tar.gz to uncompress. Why can't I attach an tar.gz file here???

The idea is to have a forum to exchange ideas and advice, share experiences, and maybe even collaborate on a couple of projects that highlight the use of Drupal in a library context.

The ever helpful Cary Gordon has kindly agreed to serve as "moderator" along with your's truly.

DrupalEd 5.3-0

This release features both security and maintenance upgrades.

For new users, this is the best version to download and install. The download tarball contains a directory named "Instructions" that contains some instructions on getting started. For additional help, and/or to get involved with the DrupalEd community, submit issues to the issue queue or join the DrupalEd group.

Download DrupalEd here

For existing users, you do not need to download and install this tarball. Rather, you should be managing your upgrades by using the update status module. This module will help you keep your DrupalEd install current and secure. If you have an existing DrupalEd site, you should upgrade immediately to keep your site secure.

The code upgrades included in this release include updates to the Calendar, Organic Groups, Pathauto, Date Range Filter, and Tagadelic modules, in addition to an upgrade to Drupal core.

For more information on the security upgrade, see the announcement.

Need Help :-)

Hi all, I'm new to Drupal and this group. I wanted to use Drupal to keep
track of my research. (Drupal has such a steep learning curve!) I posted my
originally question in the general forum and was pointed here.

I've just installed biblio. I'm wondering how I can list all the entries
grouped by categories. It seems taxonomy_dhtml almost does the job. But it
doesn't show the content of the biblio until I click into it.

Besides, what other modules would you recommend? I'm thinking of using
Project Mgmt or TaskList to keep track of ideas and todo items. Any other
suggestions?

p.s. Really sorry that my first attempt to send this question ended up incorrectly as an event.

Many thanks.

Leo Klein on Drupal (Chicago)

Okay, this one is so far off it's almost crazy to talk about, but since they just posted it, I thought I might as well put out the word -- at least for people in the Chicagoland area interested in Drupal.

Drupal of course is a popular open-source content management system. I'll be giving an introduction to it at the offices of the Metropolitan Library System in Chicago on Friday, 2/29, 1:30-4:30. (Yes, leap year day!)

I'll first go over the basics of the system -- the good, the bad, and the buggy -- in the context of open source software. Then, I'll discuss how certain features of Drupal can be used to solve typical library content needs.

You don't have to be an expert to attend this thing -- just someone interested in how modern content management systems work.

For more info and to register: http://tinyurl.com/2hwua3

Educational content types

Hi,

I have recently secured a one year secondment to the post of e-learning facilitator within my institution and have dug out some old elearning content i developed in my own CMS a number of years ago. I have converted these to work in Drupal and would like feedback on them, maybe with a view to releasing the modules into the community if they prove useful.

I will have to work with Blackboard over the next year but am pushing to move to my favourite open source CMS ;) - as a first instance to have BB as the 'front end' handling the boring stuff, and serve up material developed in Drupal on a different server... these materials are the first stage in this push and any feedback is welcome and helpful.

Basically, the idea is to have 'lessons' as staged content delivery. A lesson is split into a number of discreet parts and each part requires user interaction to reveal the next part - anything from polls to discussions, all embedded in the same page. One of the nice things is that there is an option that users cannot see discussion comments until they have posted something themselves - and this opens up a more diverse response set from students. In terms of classroom model, it is similar in form to 'seminars' (at least on BA courses)

I had other things in my own CMS too, but these were the 'central' content-types. One thing that I had before but is lacking at the moment is 'branching' to other content based on responses - you can imagine entire lesson 'trees' that go off in different directions based on the needs of the learner.

Anyway, this post got long. The best way to find out what I am saying is to try it out and leave feedback. I've put it at http://edutools.againstthezeitgeist.com. To test it, you can sign up/register as a 'teacher' to create content, or just as an ordinary authenticated user to take the 'lessons'. The lesson that is there is pretty rubbish, but you can hopefully see what I was trying to achieve.
UPDATE I have enabled log-in from your drupal.org account to test taking the lessons, but you will still have to register on the site if you want to experiment with creating your own lessons..

Let me know what you think.

From the longer post on the wiki page:

The DrupalEd project is now live on Drupal.org -- we are now ready to use the issue queue to centralize discussion on the different install profiles. In starting to discuss the profiles, I suggest we use the following format, as we will need to answer these questions as we build the various profiles.

Site Description: the functionality/use case for the site (and we have started on the descriptions in the various site descriptions in this wiki page).

Roles: the various user roles, and brief explanations of how they will function if this is not self explanatory

Content Types: the different content types in use on the site, and the roles that will be able to access them

Install Process: the install profile will lay out different options -- what do we want the options to be? We can also use the steps of the install profile to deliver training/documentation on how to use the site. While I don't want to get overly laborious with this section, this is also a possibility to document how the site works, and relay that info to the end user

Module List: What core modules will be turned on, and what contrib modules will be added?

For future iterations of these profiles, I think we should make some options within the profile for block and menu variations, but for the first pass I suggest we set up some sensible defaults.

So, let's create some profiles and make this happen.

DrupalEd install profiles

1. School Portal

A place for a public-facing web presence for a school. This will be the most simple profile and will look like a very generic Drupal installation with content types "story" and "page" and a couple of default pages and settings: "Welcome", "About us", "Contact".

2. Academic Department

A site that provides an overview of an academic department in higher education. This looks a lot like the School portal but will have more default pages, including for instance the different faculties and educations, and some default "views" to list them all.

3. One teacher, one or multiple classes

One teacher providing all information to the different classes. This is a very simple version since the roles are easy to distribute: there's one "moderator" namely the teacher and all other users have the "student" role in succession to their class role. Using taxonomy_access each piece of content will have it's own tag/class that only those students can see, next to a "protected" tag so that any student can see the content and a "public" tag for anyone (not logged in) to see. A group can be created per class, as well as a "student group" for the pupils to gather and discuss. A forum should probably be set up with some default categories.

4. Social Learning Space

A site where teachers can manage blog-based classes, teachers and students can create working groups, with support for multiple content types broken out by role -- the current DrupalEd install is a middle ground for this type of profile. This is the largest set-up and will need a great deal of consideration about the whats and hows.

5. Research Space

A site that supports modules and plugins that collect and analyze data, and publish the results. This could include elements such as polls, quizzes and views of web stats, and possibly support integration with research tools such as libsna, and reporting & visualization tools such as pentaho? A note to consider: since those products are open-source but not GPL, we will not be able to include them with the distrubtion, forcing users to download and install them manually. This should clearly be advertised on installation.

Next steps

Over the next few days, I'll create a project on d.o for DrupalEd -- I'll post here when it's live, and then we'll have a central place to discuss and manage version control of different profiles. ~billfitzgerald

Comments and thanks

Thanks Bill. The project space will definitely help with this endeavor. Not sure what happened with the Organic Groups Drupal Ed thing. That looked cool. In looking at my school district, I think they would be better off offering teachers their own space for each teacher to create their own groups - one group per class. I've got that setup pretty easily but haven't figured out the grading and tracking homework part. As student login, they can view their grades and homework assignments. In the meantime, each class (which is an organic group) would be it's own portal or blog. That way the student has a list of classes (portal/blog) that he/she can go to in order to discuss assignments or get help. That is how my on-line schooling is setup at Western Governor's University and it is pretty effective (other than using a mangled Oracle portal product). ~harriska2

I removed the "One teacher, one class" since this is just a simple form of the "many classes", no special options are needed. I sorted them in order of simplicity ASC. I'm very happy with these categories: they are easy to understand and very flexible. Good work Bill! ~wmostrey

DrupalEd Rocks! Thanks to all involved. I added research #5 above. ~ethang

All of these are wonderful ideas, and I can think of several ways to use each profile type. Everyone working on this project is amazing and I am grateful for the work Bill and others put in. When it comes to my primary needs, the public-facing portal, I don't think we should be quick to assume too much simplicity.

I'm currently working on replacing the public-facing site for a small college and need a lot more than is detailed here. Many smaller schools (2000 and fewer students) have a unified site rather than seperate departmental sites, so I want to be able to do hierarchical pages with lots of different content elements. Also, moderation is a big deal since 30 people from around campus (many of whom managed to get Ph.D.s without learning to punctuate) update content regularly, so we need workflow and moderation that's flexible to some extent but, most importantly, just works. Also, a well thought out personnel directory is incredibly important for the public. Our particular plan calls for the personnel directory to link to a bio page the employees can update themselves and also allow them each to maintain their own blogs. Likewise, we plan on having each standing committee and student club have their own group with both public and private content including calendars that get aggregated into one comprehensive campus calendar and event list.

In other words, in order to make the site truly useful and appealling to both internal and external audiences, we need more than simple "about" pages on the public-facing portal.

I'm not saying the group has to scratch my itch, especially since I'm a writer/editor/PR person with a Web site in my charge rather than a real developer who can contribute much besides ideas. But, I have a feeling a lot of organizations, whether academic, non-profit or mid-sized business, would find an install profile that does what I've detailed incredibly appealing. ~Scott (sacushman)

DrupalEd install profiles

The DrupalEd project is now live on Drupal.org -- we are now ready to use the issue queue to centralize discussion on the different install profiles. In starting to discuss the profiles, I suggest we use the following format, as we will need to answer these questions as we build the various profiles.

Site Description: the functionality/use case for the site (and we have started on the descriptions in the various site descriptions in this wiki page).

Roles: the various user roles, and brief explanations of how they will function if this is not self explanatory

I just launched a new site for my research group using Drupal. I just use use custom node types with the necessary fields for journal entries. I also have set up a editorial system for our research descriptions so that the professor can give things the okay before they post (using workflow module). I'm pretty pleased with the result so far.
