Event type:
User group meeting

We've planned a second site visit to University of Southern California (USC) on February 15, 2013, at 3pm, to catalog and photodocument the spaces reserved for us and the Greater Los Angeles Area Drupal Camp (GLADCamp) that we're planning on April 26, 27 & 28, 2013. In the tradition of several other site visits that we've gone on, this visit is open to everyone and is an excellent opportunity for anyone who's interested in starting to help organize this event.

Sign up at http://groups.drupal.org/node/282568#signup or post a comment at http://groups.drupal.org/node/282568#comments if you're interested in joining us as we tour the facilities. Those who sign up will be on this site visit's mailing list. We'll also send you our phone number and any last-minute details if there are any.

What to Bring

Bring a camera if you have one. This is a walking tour and bringing a laptop, power cables, etc. is not necessary.

Location and Directions

We are meeting at the Tommy Trojan statue next to the Campus Center.

   Ronald Tutor Campus Center
   3607 Trousdale Parkway
   Los Angeles, CA 90089

Parking

Parking is available along Vermont or any of the other streets surrounding campus (since its in the center of campus it'll be about a 5-10 min walk from anywhere you park). There are parking structures, too, but they're usually pretty expensive.

Public Transportation

USC is on the Expo Park / USC Station stop on the Metro Expo Line.

Carpooling

Several of us are meeting beforehand at Droplabs, the venue of Drupal Design Camp LA 2012 and countless other Drupal meetups and activities. You are welcome to meet us no later than 2:30pm and carpool from Droplabs (where parking is free) or at 3pm on the USC campus.

If carpooling, meet us at Droplabs promptly at 2:30pm:

   Droplabs
   651 Clover St.
   Los Angeles, CA 90031

Thanks for offering your gas-saver, Mo! I think I'll carpool with you if there's still room. If not, my truck will be available.

I'd like to come and bring my wife Sasha. I can photograph the facilities if you like. If we can ride with somebody we'd come down to droplabs. If not, we'll probably take the metro. Anybody got room for 2 more?

thanks
Ken

Mo and I can carpool with up to 3 passengers in our respective vehicles. If it's just the 4 of us, though, we'll likely carpool in Mo's Prius. Either way, just be sure to be at Droplabs at or before 2:30pm. See you and yours tomorrow!

Today's site visit was a blast. Thanks for a great time, everyone!

I hope to find some time soon to post more detailed notes about the visit. Can I work with someone in #gladcamp on IRC some time this weekend or on Monday?

In the meantime, I'll look through our tasks and update the ones that relate to our venue:

The site visit was super duper productive & I'm looking forward to a very successful event. Big props to our ACM students, Carina & Kaitlynn, for taking the time to walk us around campus & answer all our questions! Let's make sure we do everything we can to help them succeed & make them look spectacular to their fellow Engineering students, staff & USC, as a whole. :)

I also made contacts with folks from the Tech Support Ctr. in our "preferred" venue so if we get it (/fingerscrossed), I'll make sure to liaison with them. Though, as they said, their building is the easiest on the USC campus to "jack-in" for presenters & the wifi network is rock solid (two big issues for any large tech conference!).

I actually can't imagine the

christefano's picture

I actually can't imagine the site visit being any better than it was. Our site visit had 9 participants — that's more than some meetups I've been to! Kaitlyn and Carina, our venue coordinators at USC, were expert and friendly guides and answered a number of questions we had around campus policies.

We took another look at THH, the venue we evaluated at our first site visit, and then walked over to the Marshal School of Business to see one of its larger auditorium, the Hoffman Hall. That one space can accommodate roughly 250 people, which would increase our conference capacity to around 450 people, and is perfect for larger sessions, a Saturday keynote, closing ceremony, etc.

Surprisingly, during our visit we were offered the opportunity to move camp to the 3rd floor of the business school, which we practically jumped at. We're waiting for confirmation of this "preferred" venue, as Miguel called it, after which we'll finalize a number of details, including printed signs, maps on the website, number of tracks, sponsor booths, etc.

The business school isn't that far from THH but it's much closer to nearby attractions including the California Science Center, pubs, hotels and restaurants that are off-campus. Even better, the spaces in the building are much easier for us to use for sponsor areas, registration, etc. and the train drops off directly outside the building.

As excited as we are with the new developments, we still have rooms reserved for us at THH, which will hold up to 250 campers, even if we don't move camp to the business school.

What did I miss? Who has photos so that we can upload them to the album at http://www.meetup.com/DowntownDrupal/events/104641332/ on Meetup.com?

Your Drupal Camp

joyseeker's picture

Just wondering -- how did you decide on a date for your camp? It's a couple of weeks before DrupalCon in Portland. Wouldn't have been better to have it after DrupalCon when those of us going to Portland are all enthusiastic about the new topics/trends in Drupal and bring back the Drupal excitement? Think of all the expanded topics which would be added to the sessions! If you must have this second LA Drupal camp, wouldn't a date after Drupalcon serve the local Drupal community better?

christefano's picture

In short, April 26, 27 & 28, 2013, is the only weekend USC is available to us between February (a month after SANDCamp) and April (a month before DrupalCon); is when the ACM student group is also on campus to help us host and coordinate the event; and is several months from now, giving us time to plan and promote the event.

We originally tried to secure USC as a venue for Drupal Design Camp LA 2012, but as we've seen with other conferences there, including SoCal Code Camp, everything takes its own time with USC. This was discussed a few months ago at http://groups.drupal.org/node/266733#comment-852643

When looking for a venue for Drupal Design Camp LA, the DDCLA organizing team heard from USC that they were interested in hosting a DrupalCamp but not within the time frame we were looking for. Although last month's Drupal Design Camp LA was at a different venue, we don't see a good reason to pass up a good venue!

By the way, the session proposals for DrupalCon Portland just closed late last week, so anything you'd be seeing a presentation on at DrupalCon Portland has already been proposed. In my experience, while many presentations at DrupalCon introduce new concepts and trends to the larger community, very little that's presented is actually on the cutting edge. That kind of stuff usually happens at the larger camps, like BADCamp and DrupalCamp Colorado.

That opportunity rests with DrupalCamp LA!

We can make sure Droplabs is available for another planning meeting once the new "preferred" venue is confirmed.
