How we can collectively make a big contribution to Drupal

At a recent LA Drupal coffee meeting, I proposed that interested LA Drupal participants join forces to form what I uncreatively called Ninja Squads with the mission of taking on modules that are this >< far from being releasable or stable, and getting them over the hump. This would be unofficial, and would not involve actually taking over modules, although that might be an option for individual participants.

This would be a phenomenal contribution that wouldn't require an unreasonable commitment on the part of any single member. It would be open to folks at every skill level, and would provide an excellent experience in learning by doing.

This idea can also be part of into the August Pre-Lock Code Sprint inasmuch as folks who participate in this before the sprint will be better prepared to contribute and folks who participate in the sprint will be prime recruitment candidates for this.

Bear in mind that nothing builds your Drupal credibility like contributing.

"When asked why I would recommend the Zen theme versus a core theme such as Garland, I answer, Zen was built to be a seed for your tree—you plant the seed, water it, and watch it grow! Garland looks nice, but is not documented well and has custom page template code that should not appear elsewhere. In short, Garland is just not right as the basis for a theme; the Zen theme is."

New this year is our DrupalCampLA 2009 Shirt Design Contest! You design a shirt and the winner will receive a printed shirt with their design or a Drupal book (provided by book sponsors). Each prize option valued over $25.00!

Using .htaccess Options Indexes versus WebFM versus an index.php for Direction Listings

I've run into the problem of letting authenicated users access /sites/default/files/folder1/folder2 and see a full directory listing. Typically I solve this with htaccess (Options Indexes, IndexOptions +ScanHTMLTitles -IconsAreLinks FancyIndexing and other values). However, I see that Drupal's webroot/.htaccess does not play nicely.

I've tried all sorts of htaccess solutions found via search (401.shtml, ErrorDocument 401 "Unauthorized", DirectoryIndex index.php index.html, Options FollowSymLinks +Indexes). The apache 2.x error log now just has "...Attempt to serve directory: /.../sites/default/files/folder1" offering no clues.

So, I got a web folder directory listing script index.php at http://www.evoluted.net/community/code/directorylisting.php
and it worked for folder1/ but not for folder1/folder2/.

So, my question is for Drupal 6.10 to 6.12, what is the solution? I'd like a .htaccess method, but I'd be happy to get by this bottleneck. Also, the user will be uploading DBF and CSV files into these folders.

I'm open to a Drupal File Manager solution, but I've now come across so many of them. Any recommendations? I imagine that both the directory listing and uploading might be solved by one FM? WebFM seems good, but I have yet to go fully into the learning curve of it.

How do I get rid of the taxonomy terms display on my page?

I apologize in advance for the dumb question, but for the life of me I can't seem to find the setting to address this.

I am using Taxonomy menu in conjunction with my taxonomy vocabulary and terms to create the menus for our newspaper site. Everything works great when I click on the sub-items (terms) beneath each individual menu items/vocabulary (News, Sports, Lifestyle, Opinion, etc...). So for example, when I click on the sub-menu beneath "News": "Local News", "Local Business", "High Schools", etc... the page opens fine without issue.

But, when I click on the main vocabulary "News", the page opens first displaying all of the terms in bold (Local News, Local Business, High Schools, etc...) and then the news entries. I don't want our readers to see all the terms listed out, especially in BOLD.

How do set it so the TERMS in the Vocabulary DO NOT SHOW when the main menu is clicked?

I am not able to provide a link to the site because I am setting it up locally on my computer.

Problem after upgrading to v6.12: Redirected to install page

I just upgraded a client's site to 6.12 and I'm a newbie at all this. So I followed the instructions, backed up the DB (and since it's a new site....there's practically no data) backed up the files and then deleted everything from the server and uploaded 6.12. Hit update.php and did the upgrade. Now i get redirected to the install.php page no matter what I do. Fix?

I sure love Drupal -- except for the forums, which are pretty weak when compared to Simple Machines Forum or PHPbb. Even with the Advanced Forums module -- which improves things quite a bit -- the forums still come up short.

I'm working on integrating SMF with my Drupal 5 site now, and will look for Drupal 6 solutions in the future, so I'm wondering if anyone has good experience integrating one of these (or another) third-party boards.

Problem with using Panel Pages (with Tabs)

I created some panel pages with a menu type of tab. You can see the tabs at the top here, http://www.remixin.com/contests/fiasco

The problem is now every node has small empty tabs at the top. For example, http://www.remixin.com/winksound/song/i-cant-stop

I restricted the panels to just the nodes of type "contest" (the first link is this type of node). I played with the settings a bit, but nothing I did got rid of the tabs on the nodes that weren't of type "contest"

The url for the tabbed pages are in this format.
http://www.remixin.com/node/225/prizes

It's this url format that is causing the problems. Here's the delema, if I change the url the panels aren't associated to it's parent node. If I leave the url as is all of my other nodes have the empty tabs. Is there any way to fix this or a better method to create tabs associated to a given node/type.

what is it? DrupalCampLA is a greater Los Angeles area camp or unconference focused on Drupal open source goodness.

Either way, this event will do you good! awesome weather. cheap. fun. plus a laid back LA 'tude. did we mention Drupal?

will it be as big as last year? bigger? OMG, please stop asking that. It will depend on you. This year DrupalCampLA will bring a g33k'n good time with sessions of interest from n00b to l33t! (newbies to elite). Our aim is to have lots of goodness useful to all levels of drupalistos! We need awesome session proposals, and volunteers/friends to help bring everything together and make this sweet.

where is it? The School of Engineering at UC Irvine, stepped up to help. We're excited to take the camp into a campus setting as many schools are adopting Drupal so we see a natural fit as UCI being the venue. What school will be next?! We think the place is gonna be cool. The venue holds a lot of people so we can hold an awesome event! But we still have some costs. How cheap and free depends on us getting sponsors!

I have done this at http://www.cmsexpo.net/pre-conf-sessions/354-drupal-kickstart.html and even more so with the recent http://drupalcampwi.com/ last week Over here in Indy, where I lead the local Drupal Users Group, I put on a quarterly Indy Drupal HackFest where I teach the basics of CCK and Views, etc. for the 6/27 HackFest we have ppl coming to Indianapolis from Cincinnati and Columbus just for the training! I would love to either join up with people doing beginner sessions OR take on most of it myself if need be. While I can wax poetic about APIs and MashUps, I find that many Camp attendees REALLY need some basics before sitting in front of Drupal Core Developers and Module Authors.
I don't want to profit from coming to the camp but if my costs could be covered I'd LOVE to pop in [even just for day1] and rock the schnizzle out of the Beginner Sessions! Financial help appreciated! :-)
ChristophWeber (www.dialogconsulting.biz) - Seeing an install fest and beginner sessions already proposed, I'd like to extend those ideas to a site building track similar to what we did at SANDcamp. Let noobs learn Drupal by getting their feet wet, and even better, have them take home a working site built the right way. dougvann is right, many camp attendees REALLY need some basics before sitting in front of Drupal Core Developers and Module Authors.
I'd be happy to help coordinate, and I can contribute a session or two. E.g. "Image Handling with ImageField and ImageCache - Regain Sanity and Control" or maybe one on WYSIWYG. We could use Mike Stewart's virtual box or Doug's SandBox. Installing X|M|WAMP and a few modules from scratch is guaranteed to take more time than planned, and turn off people before you have them hooked on the cool stuff of Drupal. Been there, done that.

 Fatal error: Call to undefined function the_time() in <<site path>>includes/common.inc(1646) : eval()'d code on line 55

I took a look at common.inc and bootstrap.inc but I don't think what I'm looking for is in either of those files...? What should I look at?

Hey guys,

Like many others I'm starting a web firm using Drupal as my CMS. I am at the point where I have more work than I can handle and will be needing some help from a Drupal programmer. I have a few paying clients now and more in the queue. Looking at what is coming down the pipe has got me excited but is making me realize I cannot do this alone!

My goal is to become "The Next Lullabot". I would like to create a company that is actively contributing to the community while still running a successful & profitable small business.

A little bit about my background...
I've been involved in web development for 8 years and have worked with ColdFusion, DotNetNuke, a little ASP, and now Drupal & PHP. B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and recently received my MBA. I would like to focus more on the design & business side of things and leave the more technical stuff to you. I can handle theme development but that's about as far as my drupal programming skills go.

So, I'm looking for someone who is willing to contract for module development, debugging of existing modules and contributing to code to those projects, offer advice and assist with internal processes and product development.

I'm open to the idea of a more business partner relationship instead of a contractor. That would be ideal actually and I'd love to talk more about that. If any of this sounds interesting please send me a note and we can talk more. Or you can catch me at the JULY Drupal Meetup. I'll be out of town for the June one unfortunately. PCI DSS compliance for ecommerce

As a follow up from a question at the May 26 meeting, I looked into what it takes to become PCI DSS compliant.
I thought I'd share what I learned. (PCI DSS = Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard)

Summary:
I don't think Ubercart needs to be PCI DSS compliant. However, if you use a partner like Authorize.NET to process the card, you can be considered PCI DSS compliant if you perform and attest to a self assessment.

More info below:

It is is very common to develop a site that needs to accept credit cards; seemlessly use a partner to securely collect the card data and process the transaction; then return the results and control back to the original site for logging and record keeping.

Authorize.NET is frequently recommended as the partner to use for internet payments.

Good News!

By designing your e-commerce site in this manner, PCI compliance is reduced to a Type A SAQ
(Self Assessment Questionnaire) for merchants processing less than 6,000,000 annual
transactions. The current version of the Type A SAQ can be obtained at:
https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/saq/instructions_dss.shtml. To achieve compliance when
all cardholder information is handled by a partner, you only need to address two of the
twelve sections of the complete PCI-DSS (Payment Card Industry – Data Security Standard) and
only a subset of the controls in each of those sections. The two sections are (9) Restrict
physical access to cardholder data and (12) Maintain a policy that addresses information
security.

The section 9 requirements are designed to protect any cardholder information stored at your
office locations. If possible configure the relationship with your payment partner so that it is
impossible for you or your employees to obtain complete cardholder information. When
logging into the partner portal you should see at most the last 4 digits of a card number.

The section 12 requirements are designed to ensure you’re working with PCI compliant
partners to handle the cardholder information for you and that you have a process in place to
ensure those partners remain compliant. VISA publishes a list of compliant service providers
on a monthly basis at:

(BTW, PDG Software — www.pdgsoft.com is one of a very few validated shopping carts and storefront payment systems that integrates with your existing software systems and infrastructure (e.g. accounting software, POS systems, order managers, etc.).

Pre-freeze code sprint in Los Angeles

chx (Károly Négyesi) is coming to Los Angeles and he's asking the L.A. developers to bring it for what will be one of the final pre-d7 code freeze coding and testing sprints. There will be chocolate, and at some point beer.

The hours are (tentatively) 8:00 AM on Saturday until whenever we want to break and from 8:00 AM on Sunday until 5:00 PM when chx needs to leave for another engagement.

This will be a working code sprint. If you have experience coding modules and/or writing simpletests, that would be very helpful. If not, someone will assist you in getting up to speed. There will be tasks for anyone who wants to work.

Please bring your laptop, a power adapter (or a 48-hour battery), an extension cord or power strip (if you can) and a lot of enthusiasm.

Causecast has generously donated space in their new Santa Monica offices.

Cherry Hill and Causecast will provide refreshments.

Creating a backend interface to registration (theming a drupal form)

Basically we have a registration page on our site for a van shuttle that runs at several different times. A person can go to this form and select the time for the shuttle along with some other options. These are stored in a separate table (called shuttle), but I need to make a nice admin interface for this. I want something along the lines of the user admin page that has a table with the information in rows and checkboxes down the side. There also needs to be a drop-down with actions in it (i know how to do that).

I realize that I need the function that creates the form and also the theme function to customize it's display. I have these, but they are not playing nice together. Currently my output is only a table with the headers and nothing else. I think it may have to do with how I am creating the form to begin with. I don't need someone to give me exact code to solve this but maybe more of a general layout of how the form should be constructed so that the theme function can put it into a table.

Any suggestions?

Public Access and related media initiatives on a regional level

I wanted to reset this discussion on how Public Access and related media initiatives would benefit from collaboration in a wide range of areas from development, documentation, training, funding/fundraising, marketing, promotion, business, hosting, sales, and services.

Using LA as an example, I'm wondering if there's some sort of 'regional template' we can create for setting up shop on a regional level. What would it take (people, skills, funds, etc.) to replicate the Open Media model and leverage the legwork already done? What kind of support could/should be provided from the mothership in Denver and what areas do you need help?

Starting tonight with what looks to be a massive meetup, I'll be looking to round up interested individuals and companies in LA. Based on the size, diversity, and nature of 'the industry', I think a successful implementation in LA could provide a great framework to move forward.

User 1 lost all privilages

Hello,

I've got Drupal 5 site that won't let user 1 (or anyone else with privilages) to stay logged in.

It lets me login. I see the admin the menu. But as soon as I click on ANY admin link, it says "Access Denied" and the admin menu disappears and I'm logged out.

Another user has the experience on his machine so I know it's not particular to my box, like a browser cookies issue.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this. I couldn't find any posts on drupal.org that matched my scenario.

How to disable false communication when working on DEV?

we have a LIVE website, with active (recurring) paid subscribers...
every month - they get charged on their credit card through paypal.

(so far - all good)

now - while creating the next version, updates, etc -
on DEV - we migrated all live user info and started working with it
(ouch)
and then - all our paid subscribers - got a false message - that their credit card cannot be charged!

my question is -
moving forward, as we are going to have automatic notification on content added, newsletters, recurring payment, etc.

is there any safe method / workflow -
to work on DEV, with latest info - without anything being sent (or charged) from there like it happens on LIVE?
so we can debug only, and work with sandbox, instead of real users?

btw - when we finish a version on DEV -
we run a script - to create STAGE server -
it copies all functionality changes, views, panels, etc from DEV
it copy all users, and content from LIVE

and then we QA on STAGE - to make sure it ready to switch,
to become the new LIVE.

(also with that workflow, i'd like to prevent any false information being sent out, until STAGE is ready, and becoming LIVE)

Drupal multisite on Mosso Cloud

Someone (sorry, forgot your name) asked about setting up a Drupal multisite on the Mosso Cloud at the last group meeting. I've been trying the same thing, but unfortunately, it appears that's not possible.

I found this on a blog from the crew that built TheWrap.com:

... A few things to consider before moving a Drupal site to Mosso:

1) Is your site a multi-site? If it is then Mosso cloud sites is not an option. You cannot point multiple domains to one single instance of the hosting environment. There is no virtual host infrastructure.

I showed Mosso support the quote and asked if it was accurate. "Matt" (the chat support guy) said it was indeed true, and that there were no plans to change "because of how the shared system is configured on Cloud Sites."

I dunno about other cloud set-ups, but I suppose I'll stick with my humble Dreamhost account for multisites for now.
