TinyMCE default configuration module (GHOP119)

For GHOP task #119, I've created a module which creates (or restores) a flexible and secure configuration for TinyMCE with a single button click. You can download the module from the d.o issue queue (after enabling the module, it appears as Administer -> Site configuration -> Set TinyMCE defaults). I would appreciate any feedback on the implementation of the module, the user experience, and the configuration it installs.

My thoughts are below, but I would prefer to hear yours :)

As far as the configuration it installs, I think it looks good, although I'm not so sure about setting filtered HTML as the default input format and setting filtered HTML options. This feels like it is overstepping its bounds of a TinyMCE configuration, perhaps it should tell the user what it is going to change, so that the user is at least aware of this.
From a usability perspective, having another module to download and activate is suboptimal. It would be easier if it was included in the TinyMCE download, under drupal\modules\tinymce\contrib\tinymce_autoconf or similar. Easier still would be if it was integrated into TinyMCE, and on the admin/settings/tinymce page, when there are no profiles, instead of the current "No profiles found. Click here to create a new profile.", it displayed "No profiles found. Click here to create a new profile, or install the default profile".

Drupal 6 RC 1 is coming... help get TinyMCE ready

With RC1 of Drupal 6 expected to be released this week, now is the time help update TinyMCE.

Beau Gunderson started a patch back in October, but it isn't finished/functional http://drupal.org/node/180436

I have just introduced Drupal as an aggregator to drive content to the Smarty driven, homebrew green social network code I inherited at my new gig. Now that I have a reason to use Drupal and TinyMCEat work, I'll be more active in helping to clear TinyMCE issues from the queue, submitting patches, and getting the patches committed to the release versions.

The good news is the TinyMCE module seems to work well with the beta releases of version 3 of TinyMCE from Moxiecode. Moxiecode had been hinting that they were dropping the current TinyMCE code base in favor of something smaller, but that hasn't happened... yet.

Not much going on with the editor agnostic WYSIWYG module either.

As always, I'll be the first to admit that TinyMCE is the best of some imperfect options. I can use all the help I can get to make this work for as many Drupal users as possible. To get this done we are going to need people to help write as well as test the patches submitted.

To do that, you'll need to install a test copy of RC1 of Drupal 6 when it is released and watch the issue queue for new patches.

Drush - The Drupal Shell Package Manager

Has anyone had a chance to try Drush?

http://unbiskant.org/blog/frando/new-drush-module-install-and-update-mod...

This looks like it could either be a solution for TinyMCE's CVS issues or become the reason foreign libraries are going to have to be allowed in the Drupal.org's CVS.

TinyMCE FAQ

Q. I've added an image/table to my page/story/blog, but it is not showing up when I view it?

A. This is often caused by publishing the item with the Input format set to Filtered HTML. The HTML you've added is inserted into your database, but is filtered out when the item is displayed. This is why you will still see the when you edit the item.

Q. TinyMCE doesn't show up when using theme X?

An increasing number of themes seem to be missing

<?php
print $scripts
?>

  Either add that line of code between the and of your theme, or use a different theme.

If the print $help is missing, users may see a blank page in TinyMCE settings.

Q. TinyMCE doesn't allow me to use embed/iframe/script/object?

TinyMCE is used by content management systems other than Drupal. While Drupal allows site administrators to filter potentially harmful code from being displayed, Moxiecode's default TinyMCE configuration filters content as well. Moxiecode's TinyMCE wiki provides documentation for the default set of valid html tags allowed as well the how to enable specific tags or the Full XHTML rule set.

Q. How do I enable TinyMCE for a specific a CCK text field

See this Handbook page.

Q. When I use the Enter/Return key, TinyMCE adds a new paragraph. How do I get a line break?

This is done similarly to many other programs by holding shift while pressing the Enter/Return.

How do I use TinyMCE with a language pack?

These instructions work for Swedish installation of TinyMCE :

1) Download the sv_utf8 language pack from moxiecode. (Be sure to choose "sv_utf8" and not "sv".)
2) Install it like any other language pack (unzip it in modules/tinymce/ directory so it places all the language files correct).
3) Edit line 735 in tinymce.module and add 'sv_utf8', after 'sv', .
4) Select the sv_utf8 as the language for the role in administer > settings > tinymce.

Solution suggested by AdrianB in Issue #62502.

Grey areas on both sides of TinyMCE

Jay Wolf suggested adding a function to your template.php. Appears to work.

Q. How do I use the Word Count in the TinyMCE example template?
./tinymce/examples/example_template.htm has some javascript to compute a word count. I have TinyMCE working under Drupal 5, but don't know how to change templates / configure TinyMCE / put the logic in the page and invoke it so that my users can have a word count feature. Any step-by-step help would be appreciated!

Removing tinymce from textareas

The team at Computer Minds posted this tip...

TinyMCE has a habit of popping up right where you don't want it - the log field on a node edit page is a good example.

Lucklily it is a relatively easy job to theme out tinymce for a particular textarea.

The following theme override should go into your template.php file

function phptemplate_tinymce_theme($init, $textarea_name, $theme_name, $is_running) {
  switch($textarea_name){
    case 'nodewords-description':
      case 'edit-nodewords-description':
   unset($init);
  return $init;
      break;
      default:
  return theme_tinymce_theme($init, $textarea_name, $theme_name, $is_running);
  }
}

Just keep adding extra cases for any additional textareas ...

How to get JQuery and TinyMCE to work

Brian Pontarelli has some advice for getting TinyMCE to play nice with JQuery.

I was just having a ton of issues getting JQuery and TinyMCE to work. Sometimes loading of TinyMCE would hang and never complete and other times I would lose my tinyMCE or jQuery objects for some reason. Well, I’m not sure what the error was, but I finally got it working. It seems that you first need to completely load and initialize TinyMCE before loading JQuery. Here’s my code:

<head>
<!-- Tiny MCE -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="/tiny_mce/tiny_mce.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
  tinyMCE.init({ mode : "none"});
</script>

<!-- JQuery -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="/js/jquery/jquery-1.2.js"></script>
</head>

This seems to work and allow me to do everything AJAX style and use TinyMCE editors in my AJAX forms (i.e. forms that I download the HTML for and that I submit via AJAX). Here’s a simple form snippet that is downloaded via AJAX and placed into a div:

<form action="submit-ajax">
  <textarea id="editor" ...>
  ...
</form>
<script type="text/javascript">
  tinyMCE.addMCEControl(document.getElementById("editor"), "editor");
</script>

Q. Some of the original formatting of a page is lost when switching the
Enable Rich Text button on/off, or going from non-TinyMCE to TinyMCE editing on a page

An answer to this problem is to disable the ability for a user to turn TinyMCE functionality on and off, instead,
have a profile where only TinyMCE editing of text is allowed, and another profile that is scrictly text only w no TinyMCE etc.. depending on user. As a site administrator/designer I have a different profile for each, switching TinyMCE on & off on a page just creates too many problems. Also, create a new blank (no filtering) input format for the TinyMCE-only profile and set that to the default input type, and don't allow that to be changed as it can interfere with TinyMCE's formatting - this would be in the context of users who would only be using TinyMCE and don't need to enter HTML.

Distributing TinyMCE with Moxicode releases outside of CVS?

By far the top issue with TinyMCE are install issues. Of the install issues, the two step install process is the #1 problem users have. I don't think the Moxiecode releases can be included with the module because Moxiecode releases their code with an LGPL license and everything in CVS gets a GPL license automagically. Jeff Eaton wrote about the Drupal and GPL back in February of last year. He used TinyMCE as one of the examples of a module that connects Drupal to non-GPL'ed code.

I believe I can distribute versions of the TinyMCE module that include the Moxiecode LGPL code on sites other than Drupal.org. Is that right?

I still think that the module development belongs in CVS, but the time it takes to role a separate distribution for users who simply can't figure out that they need to download something from Moxiecode in addition to the module would more than make up for it.

Anyone have thoughts about this?

Top Issues with TinyMCE, can you help?

I spent several hours during OSCMS clearing old issues from the TinyMCE issue queue and grouping issues that have never been resolved or the suggested resolution was never included. My ultimate goal is keep the open issues in the queue limited to 4 or 5 pages. Last weekend by closing all the 4.6 issues, closing old install issues, and marking several issues as duplicate I was able to whittle the list from 13 to 7 pages. I wish I had better tools to group issues and assign tasks, but I'm slogging through this with what I have.

The issues that come up again and again that still aren't resolved in any release are...

Summary of gzip/compressor Issues
Summary of Width CSS/Resizing Issues

I would really like to find someone to help with each of this but more than the others I need help with the translation issues. I know very little about how translations work in Drupal or TinyMCE. I can read French and Spanish with difficulty and speak each worse than a slow 5 or 6 year-old. Anyone?

Dojo Lesson on TinyMCE This Sunday at 11AM PST!

I'm "hosting" the weekly Dojo screencast this week. I will be demo'ing the TinyMCE WYSIWYG toolbar. I will be covering the installation process, the new features available in Drupal 5, and answering as many questions as time allows. I will talk a little bit about the dark days of TinyMCE and how I ended up as the maintainer, but I want to spend more time discussing what direction users what TinyMCE to go. What are the biggest problems that still need to be solved.

You can find more information about the Drupal Dojo including how to connect to the screencast here. If you aren't familiar with TinyMCE, it is the second most popular user contributed Drupal module that enables a Microsoft Word-like WYSIWYG toolbar. The TinyMCE code itself is maintained by Moxiecode and is used in many other projects including (Joomla, PHPNuke, Plone, Movable Type, and many more). The module simply enables TinyMCE in Drupal... and thus enables users to publish formatted text, upload images, Flash, QuickTime, embed YouTube videos, and many other things without the need for Dreamweaver or knowledge of HTML. More advanced users have the option of turning TinyMCE off or adding buttons and plugins that enable HTML and now PHP! editing in the browser.

Tune in!

Thank you Nedjo! Now what?

Nedjo has done a great job cleaning up CVS and writing 2 feature enabling patches (form based custom TinyMCE configuration and JQuery support). It's been all I could do to keep the back log of issues and feature requests to a minimum while deadlines at my "real" job were my priority.

We've just launched the beta of OurTahoe.org, so I have more "free" time to dedicate to TinyMCE. I'd really like to get the custom version of TinyMCE we're using at UNR updated so that I'm running a release version. To do that I need form based custom TinyMCE configuration to work with module that add textareas to the node add form like Node Teaser. Currently using the patch with multiple textareas causes duplicate TinyMCE calls. Nedjo believes that using JQuery instead of tinyMCE.init() will solve that problem. Currently the JQuery patch causes other issues.

I've set up 3 semi-public new test sites to work through the issues...

http://tinymce-roles.sidewalktheory.com
http://tinymce-jquery.sidewalktheory.com
http://tinymce-jqueryroles.sidewalktheory.com (not working yet)

I'll email everyone in the group the admin username/password individually. The reason I've set these up is the third big issue that I've been working... the state of the .install. There are definitely some issues with Nedjo's patches depending on what version on TinyMCE you are coming from. The old 5.1 users don't even have the settings and roles files this patch tried to update. In addition, the install needs to address the fact that Moxie actually renamed the TinyMCE tables. Users who had TinyMCE installed that went to Moxie and are now trying to come back to TinyMCE are missing these tables as well.

In the next release, I'd like the .install to work for all the versions we know are out there.

If you have some time to offer feedback on the state of these updates, I'd appreciate it. If you'd like to test them with a specific module, let me know and I'll install it.
