QA automation Engineer | Acquia, Inc, commercially supported Drupal Distribution

Acquia is a new software company looking for a QA AUTOMATION ROCKSTAR to work in our Andover, MA office as a part of our amazing development team providing value added software products and services for Drupal's open source social publishing software!

We are using a test driven development process in an Agile with Scrum model. Acquia's engineering organization will be testing both its own web applications, its back-end (faceless) web services, as well as taking a strong role in building tests for Drupal on all the Drupal coding we do. Therefore, Acquia software developers must supply tested software as part of their deliverables.

Therefore, our senior QA engineers will be building the unit test and integration test framework that pulls together and automates the running of tests, as well as creating the standards for the tests that must be written (then evaluating the submitted tests to make sure they meet requirements). These team members will also be building testing frameworks to simulate Drupal operation in a variety of environments, including mixed host / mixed-OS, and build testing platforms to isolate and identify Drupal scalability / reliability / availability issues.

We consider QA engineers to be software developers, not just people who write / execute test plans. QA engineers must know how to code, and build/write automated testing frameworks as needed.
Summary of requirements

BS in computer science or equivalent.

3+ years QA experience in web application testing.

2+ years experience working (successfully) in a test driven development environment.

2+ years experience working (successfully) in an Agile/Scrum development model and experienced with the QA lifecycle in agile development environment.

Experience with testing small and large scale web applications written on the LAMP stack. Software includes: Linux, MacOS, Windows, Apache, IIS, PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, memcached, NFS, Drupal, CVS, Subversion, Xen/VMWare, etc.

Experience with testing client-server applications running in heterogenous environments (many different OSes and configurations).

Able to help setup test configurations of servers, software and hardware environments.

Excellent analytical and problem solving skills. Will have to work closely with engineering team to recreate defects. Should be able to help debug PHP, HTML and Javascript code, MySQL queries and web server configurations. Should be able to help write basic unit/functional tests that reproduce and isolate bugs.

Reliable, self-motivated, and motivated by the delivery of high quality software.

Strong verbal and written communications skills, with demonstrated ability to work with other software developers in a test driven development environment. Should be able to write quality reports that can be shared outside the corporate firewall.

Experience with Drupal preferred but not required.
Feel free to call me to discuss this opportunity further . You can apply online at : http://acquia.com/about-us/contact/employment

We're looking for Drupal experts to join our immediate or extended support team of “ninjas” who share an obsession about helping customers overcome roadblocks to make Drupal rock. The right fit is someone with mad Drupal skills along with that rare combination of an astute diagnostic mind coupled with warm people skills and a drive to stay focused on a customer problem until it is resolved -- “Support DNA”, we like to call it. Some have it, some don’t.

You know who you are. You can’t help but to help. You have an uncanny ability to hear what’s not being said, to read between the lines, to connect the dots, and to see the unseen from afar. You know how to meet customers exactly where they are, then you know how to lead them out of the woods with respect. You resolve issues using your smarts, obsessive curiosity, and sheer determination. Best of all, you get a kick out of nailing the tough ones and sharing what you’ve discovered with others who need to know. If these things set you apart, then we invite you to apply. Join us to help Acquia Drupal customers all over the globe overcome obstacles and deliver on their promises.

Varying relationships are possible - from full or part-time employee to contracted Acquia authorized ninja at large.

Essential Characteristics

* A passion for helping people who happen to also be customers.
* An incessant curiosity about how software works, and how it doesn’t.
* Comfort with ambiguity and complexity.
A compulsion for creating order out of chaos.
* You’re a puzzle-doer.
Highly effective troubleshooting methodologies - whether intuitive or explicit - it doesn’t matter as long as it works for you.
* Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. It’s a multi-media, multi-channel world after all.
* An ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
* A penchant for turning over all the rocks and resolving issues thoroughly.

Essential Technical Skills

* 2 yrs. of obsessive experience building, configuring, and troubleshooting Drupal sites.
* 2 yrs. of obsessive experience with key Drupal modules and a variety of site recipes (multimedia, social networking, brochure sites, and so forth)
* A Drupal.org profile that shows your involvement in the support forums and issue queues.
* 2 yrs experience installing and configuring Apache, MySSQL, PHP, (LAMP/XAMP/MAMP stack) , Javascript, XML, FTP
* 5 yrs experience installing, configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting apps in at least one of Linux or other UNIX operating systems, Windows, or OS X with a good basic understanding of the others.
* Ability to trace and debug Web applications
* Perform analysis and tune operating system and web technology performance
* Understanding of network protocol layers, security layers and domain models

Job Responsibilities

* Interact directly with our customers and partners to resolve technical issues in a timely manner
* Take full ownership of issues and be responsible for all communications needed to develop and maintain excellent customer relationships.
* Acquire and maintain current knowledge of relevant product offerings and support policies in order to provide technically accurate solutions.Train and be trained.
* Faithfully track and record customer interactions.
* Contribute to, and help maintain, the Acquia knowledge base.
* Contribute to the continuous improvement of our support services and related infrastructure.
* Work with peers, QA and Engineering as needed to identify and report defects, find fixes or workarounds, and validate enhancement requests.
* Know when to escalate or notify management of important issues.
* Work with internal customers such as Sales and Professional Services to insure customer needs are met and growth opportunities are maximized.

Since ninjas have an uncanny ability to hide in plain sight, we're prepared to pay a bounty to find the best. Be the first to refer someone who makes the cut, and is still jamming after three months, and we'll gladly mail you a check for $1,000 to $2,500 depending on the situation. See the bounty rules on our posting for details.

Relationships can vary, but "fit" is key. So who's right for this? See our candidate posting for specifics.

We're seeking a truly brilliant individual to architect, build, deploy, and support (post-deployment) Acquia’s physical systems and network infrastructure. This candidate must have a deep understanding of different platforms (i.e. Unix, Linux, Windows) and system software such as backup software, monitoring software, patch management, software deployment, etc. Candidates with commercial Java development experience will have an edge, since such individuals can work alongside our web service engineers to translate our technical capabilities into highly-reliable Acquia Network Services.

Strong experience in network and systems' security
Experience with scaling all layers of the LAMP stack
Experience with using flexible web services such as Amazon EC2 and S3
Experience with Xen/VMWare
Inside Sales | Acquia, Inc. Commercially supported Drupal distribution

The profile we’re looking for is a strong director level person to build and operate an incredible inside sales team. It’s an in- and out-bound volume sales business with average transactions sizes around the $5-10K range, but with a pretty long tail of small deals and a few $100K plus deals on the other end of the spectrum.

We need someone who can rapidly staff the team with smart junior reps and give them the coaching they need to become lethal in a very short period of time. The ideal candidate is someone who is already succeeded at the director role in another company in a similar inside team. They need to have a firm idea of what works and what doesn’t and be ready to work hand in hand with marketing to rapidly experiment to find the groove for our products.

The right person could grow into a VP level from this role. We would consider a VP level hire if it was the right person.
WANTS:
• True inside Sales manager- not someone who is looking to use it as a stepping stone to Outside sales. Dialing for dollars-
• Complete transaction over the phone. From cold call to driving the revenue over the phone.
• This is not a sourcing situation for outside sales.
• Please give me samples of quota achievement – Presidents club…achieving sales incentives.
• Put together a methodology and put a system in place.
• What is your theory of inside sales… and how it can be successful
• Build from scratch. Doing smaller deals and higher volume.
•

NH Drupal Meetup/Event planning

Sorry for the delay, but between DrupalCon, the 'nerd ick' cold/flu that's been passing around the office, and of course the snow (it's falling again right now), things have been a mite hectic.

We need to pick a date/location for a first NH meetup... suggestions welcomed.

Ben has kindly offered the conference room at Commonplaces, which will hold about 15-20 people, and has a projector. It's in Hampstead, conveniently located 15 minutes off I93 exit 3. Other offers will be considered, either for a first meeting, or future meetings, so speak up!

Date/Time:

To be determined. Late April is my preference right now, on a weekday night, say 7:00/30pm to 9pm What's your preferences? Day of Week?

Topics:

1) Lightning talks are good for getting everyone involved... pick anything and talk for 5 minutes on it.
Interesting module you use, book you read, code you wrote, design you made, etc...

Pro: lots of people involvement - fresh idea sharing
Con: Shy people, Different levels of skills/interest, size of group (too big or too small)

2) Speaker/Presentation - devote a half hour/45 minutes to a speaker/presentation on a topic of general interest.

3) A meld of the two, allowing folks to lightning speak for 5 minutes, after having a presentation first.

I'll vote for #3 first, and then we can see what participants find most useful.

I've got an idea for the first presentation, which I've bounced off a few people and everyone so far liked:

I call it: "Web 2.0, Code 0" or How to Build a Web 2.0 site in Drupal without ever touching PHP at all

I have to work on this (it's only an cool idea so far, not a fleshed out presentation yet), but I think it's good because it spans the range of users out there: newbies, designers without coding skills, and Drupal professionals.

It'll focus on how to combine existing modules (some old, some new), not requiring php knowledge, and ending up with a site that endusers will clearly label as "Web 2.0" ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=NLlGopyXT_g )
See http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a7/Web_2.0_Map.svg
for a great map of what Web 2.0 is about...

What about a DrupalCamp New England?

Feeling a little bit of a post-Drupalcon lull and mulling over travel plans to next weekend's DrupalCampNYC4, I found myself wishing that there was something a little bit closer to home to look forward to going to occasionally.

In case anyone isn't already familiar... DrupalCamp is based on the BarCamp format which is an impromptu participant led free conference, usually one or two days long. At the beginning of the day, attendees sign up for sessions they'd like to lead and/or make suggestions of a session they'd like to see so that someone else can take the lead. Discussion and attendant participation encouraged. The event is to be free (usually you can find companies to sponsor whatever expenses are involved, like pizza for lunch) Lots of coding, lots of learning and lots of socializing inevitably takes place.

I figured it would be a question worth posing to all of the groups in the New England area... Would having a DrupalCamp somewhere in our area be something that we'd like to see happen? If so, where in the greater New England area would we be willing to travel to? (It would be my personal assumption that Boston would probably be most central....)

Introduce Yourself NH Drupallers!

One of the things that was exciting to see last week at Drupalcon in Boston was the amount of New Hampshire based folks who are involved with Drupal. I know Seth and I briefly discussed the possibility of trying to get the ball rolling to do some meetups, so I figured I'd step in and see if I couldn't start up some introductions because I know I'd love to see what other Granite Staters are doing with Drupal!

So, who are you? Where are you from? What do you with Drupal? How did you get started with Drupal? What's your background? What areas of the state would you be willing to travel to for meetups?

I guess I'll start it off....

I'm Nikki Henninger, I live in Manchester, NH, I work as a themer for Advomatic, and occasionally do some lightweight development, and I'm making a resolution to get involved with the documentation of Drupal this year.

I got my starts in web design/development as a middle schooler (late 90s) wanting to publish bad poetry and stories online. It started out with static html sites, and over time evolved into blogging, I used b2/cafelog and then switched to WordPress when the project forked that direction. I went to college at NHTI for general studies and Computer Engineering Technology, neither of which were particularly web related per se.... but there were certainly things I learned, particularly from the CPET program that have been useful.

I got my start professionally with web development and with Drupal when the Concord Monitor launched blogsNH.com. I was interested in blogging (hmm... I haven't done that in awhile, I probably should) and in the process asked a bunch of technically nosy questions on what platform they were going to run the project on and somehow ended up getting hired on a temporary basis to help with some theming and configuration post-launch.

While I was working on blogsNH and looking for Drupal guidence, I reconnected with Morbus Iff (you'll never see him, but you'll hear of) whom I'd previously met elsewhere on IRC and remembered because he lives in the state. After I was finished with blogsNH, I took a few months off to do some things like get married, and when I started looking for jobs again, I complained on my blog and the next morning, Morbus had sent me an email pointing out that his employer was hiring and even though I wasn't a Drupal expert by any means, I was at least familiar with what nodes and taxonomy were and that's better than nothing! I worked there for about six months, then moved on to Advomatic where I work at home and make sites look pretty!

Beantown '08 logo for Drupalcon

Just a headsup for the new logo just added to the logo contest:

Please vote for it, if you want to see something distinctly Bostonian and Drupalish, and not just another "Logo 2.0ish",
The artist, Diallo ('D'), is a co-worker, and part of the great team at Commonplaces.

While a Patriots or Red Sox themed logo would be nice given their winning streaks this year, licensing issues make it unlikely to be feasible...
So what says Boston more than "Beantown"?
