The Institute for American Thought of the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts (http://liberalarts.iupui.edu/iat/) is a unique humanities research facility with an internationally acclaimed concentration of resources and scholarship. The Institute unites the teaching faculty, editing specialists, and research holdings of the Peirce Edition Project, the Santayana Edition, the Frederick Douglass Papers, and the Center for Ray Bradbury Studies with related academic programs in American Studies, Professional Editing, and American Philosophy. The Institute is structured around a research center that supports the work of its scholarly editions and academic programs, while providing a resource for students and scholars worldwide.
The Institute for American Thought is seeking a Content Management System Developer to begin January 2010. Primary responsibilities: (1) support four scholarly editions requiring extensive computer operations for text preparation prior to and through print and electronic publication; (2) develop and maintain content and document management systems for the editions. The developer will support the editions' research editors and text editors as well as collaborate with the technical personnel of the university. Skills in writing training materials and platform-user guides are a plus. Job title will be determined by credentials and experience. Required Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree or equivalent; a master's degree is preferred.
Three to five years experience in content management system programming.
Demonstrated interest in the humanities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Considerable experience in programming web-based solutions to text editing and publication issues with open-source softwares that include at least such Web applications as DRUPAL, Apache, PHP, MySQL, CSS, and JavaScript that are multi-platform compatible (Mac OS X, Unix, Linux, and Windows).
Ability to develop a flexible and expandable content-management platform that meets the needs of scholarly editors and end-users.
Demonstrated familiarity with TeX, LaTeX, and XML tagging, establishing transformation protocols (XSLT) for moving documents from web-based software to page-layout software. Knowledge of SGML is helpful.
Experience with the Adobe creative suite software, including In Design and Illustrator, as well as software to create special characters.
Well-organized, capable of working under pressure and deadlines, and able to communicate efficiently and effectively with editors in order to realize various layout and text mark-up plans, and able to interface smoothly with technical personnel.
Experience in maintaining computer software, hardware, and networks.
Ability to learn quickly and conform to the demands of complex critical editions.
Experience in methods of mathematical and scientific inputting and publishing standards a big plus.
