Hi all. I'm not sure how to go about this. I need to create a small form for entering an email address. but the form needs to be on the homepage. I've created form pages before but this has me stumped as it needs to be part of the content for the homepage. Any ideas...?

New to Drupal and Seeking Clarification and or help on Drupal Theming

I've been trying to get my head around exactly how I can prepare my own web page design using an external style sheet and adapt it for or fit it to, say for example, a zen sub theme. I get the impression that the main concern is that one builds one's page to suit a 1. 2. 3 or even 4 column design with header and footer and then depending on one's basic theme one can add blocks for content within those column areas and designate which content goes in which block? Perhaps I just haven't messed around enough yet with the other themes. I'm aiming to put together a social networking site to begin with.

Cheers

Post-graduate fellowship in Semantic Web technologies for Content Management Systems
DERI, National University of Ireland, Galway

The Reasoning and Querying Unit at the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) of the National University of Ireland, Galway invites applications for a Research Assistant, Masters or PhD fellowship position in the area of Semantic Web technologies for Content Management Systems.

Research is performed in collaboration with other DERI units and industrial partners.

Applicants should hold an excellent primary degree in a relevant discipline with industrial project experience, such as active website development with Content Management Systems being a distinct advantage. Applicants should have a strong interest in the area of Linked Data with an understanding of its application and use. Applicants must have a background in concrete CMS systems such as for instance Drupal, Joomla!, Typo3, Plone, etc.; any knowledge about other CMSs is a bonus, programming skills in Java or scripting languages such as PHP, JavaScript is desirable. Applicants must be highly motivated with the ability for independent and critical thought. Successful applicants are expected to combine scientific work with application-oriented research and development in collaborative projects funded by national and European funding agencies.

Please submit your application (including cover letter outlining suitability, a brief outline of your preferred methodology, full CV and contact details for three referees) to hr@deri.org with the subject line 'Post-graduate fellowship in Semantic Web Technologies for Content Management Systems', by 5 pm on Friday, July 10th 2009.

Drupal Design Shop's & D7

Hi Drupallers,

Anyone know companies in ireland that have expertise in designing & implementing drupal themes? Also I realise its an open ended question but any feedback as to what a design could cost would be useful as well?

I know D7 is a still a bit off but how difficult is it expected for a template implementation to go from D6 to D7?
What was it like going from D5 to D6 for example.

Anyone into doing a half day workshop ?

Hi all,

Anyone on here fancy doing a half day workshop session (for a fee) on Drupal theming in Dublin (South city centre) the week after next (Tue 9th, Wed 10th or Thurs 11th) ?
Nothing too heavy or formal - we've already developed a couple of sites - but we're looking for some advice on best practices in choosing the right modules for various purposes and approaches for converting designs into Drupal themes.
Drop responses off-list to: daragh@wildwave.com
Let us know what sites you've worked on / experience you have and what fee you propose.
Mod, if this is the wrong place for this post, let me know and I'll move it to jobs ... I just thought it was too small to post there.

-DW.

Drupalcon Paris

Hi all,
Drupalcon Paris is the big Drupal gig this year, and I'm going.
http://paris2009.drupalcon.org/
[4th European Drupalcon in a row for me .. can't believe it].

Who else from Ireland is planning to travel?
Any interest in sharing an apartment for the week?

I'm taking the scenic route to get there, just for something different.
Train to Dublin, Ferry to Holyhead, Train to london [ see sailrail.co.uk for all-in ticket]
A night or two in London, and then Eurostar to Paris.
Return via Eurostar to London, and fly to Galway from London Luton.
A mini-adventure.
Nothing booked yet except the Drupalcon ticket.

Its a bit more expensive than last year, but it's Paris and not Hungary, so its not a surprise.
Still a great deal considering the amount of knowledge I soak up each year, not to mention meeting other Drupal developers in the flesh as opposed to the issue queue!

Any other takers?
Alan

Drupal Monthly Meetup Dublin

A monthly Drupal meetup is held in Dublin on the last Wednesday of every month. It takes place upstairs in the Longstone pub, Townsend St, Dublin 2 and starts off at 6:30pm. A PHP user group meeting starts in the same venue at 8pm, so people are welcome to stay for that.

It's an informal meetup where you can meet fellow Drupallers, chat and have a beer. They also serve food. If you have any questions or problems, feel free to ask for advice at the meeting. Usually someone will be there with a laptop, so we can demo things if necessary. :)

There's no wi-fi in the venue, and no area for lightening talks, so suggestions for alternative venues that allow both of those, while still maintaining the social aspect, are welcome.

This event page will be updated each month with details of the next monthly event, so if you wish to receive notifications about this and future Dublin meet-up events, please sign up!

New Social Networking book out now for Drupal 6

I'm currently using a recently published book entitled, 'Drupal 6 - Social Networking' as a guide for building a social network site. The following are excerpts from the book from the publishers, Packt Publishing. See: www.packtpub.com. I should say that the publishers, Packt Publishing, part sponsored the recent DrupalNGo Camp and sprint in Galway and asked if I would post some excerpts from their book.

Drupal 6 Social Networking: Communicating with Users

Our users can communicate with one another, which is great, but quite often as an administrator the need may arise for us to communicate with a user or users on our site. It may be to remind them about the web site or to inform active users about new changes to the site, which they may not have been made aware of.

This article is extracted from the "Drupal 6 Social Networking" book. In this article, you will learn:

About mailing lists, and how to use them with our Drupal social network

How to use an offline approach for contacting our users

How to use blocks of content to get a message across to your users

Getting started

We are going to look at a few different modules, some of which we will use. These need to be installed first, so let's do that now to save us time.

The modules

We need to download the following modules:

Addresses module (http://drupal.org/project/addresses) enable the Addresses, Addresses - Phone/Fax and Addresses - Users components.

Simplenews module (http://drupal.org/project/simplenews)

And extract them to our sites/all/modules folder, and enable them via the administration interface.

A look back

We have already looked at one very important aspect to communicate with our usersóuser e-mail settings. Within the User settings page (Administer | User management | User settings), we have a group of settings under the heading User e-mail settings. These are various email templates that are sent to our users upon certain events, such as registration, account activation, password reset, account being blocked or account being deleted. The content of these emails can be very important depending on the nature of the web site. In our Dino Space site, we may use a very informal, welcoming and fun tone for our automated emails. But for a business-oriented social network, we would want to use a much more formal tone.

Modules

Don't forget, many modules also have their own email templates for sending emails to users, all of which can normally be changed easily from their respective sections in the administration area.

Communicating on an individual basis

As we have installed the contact form module on our site, we can also communicate with our users on an individual basis using the contact forms on their profiles. This is handy for those times when we do need to contact an individual user, maybe because of complaints against them by other members of the community, or perhaps to invite them to become a moderator or contributor to the site.

Alternatively, we can contact the user directly via their email addresses listed in their accounts, as this is viewable from the administration area.

Inactive users

We may wish to contact users who have not been active on the site for a long time, to remind them that the site is still there, and that they would be welcome to become active in the community once again. Drupal records the time a user was last active, which allows us to easily sort the list of users by their activity.

A module (Inactive user) is available for Drupal 5, which is intended to contact inactive users automatically, but (at the time of writing this) one is not available for Drupal 6. You may wish to keep watch on the modules list on the Drupal.org web site to see if anything comes up in future http://drupal.org/project/inactive_user

Communicating with individuals publicly

Don't forget, we also have access to all of the communication methods available for our users to communicate with one another, such as replying to posts, commenting on content, or posting on their profiles. So if we need to contact a user, and we can contact them publicly, we can use these features.

Mailing lists

Drupal has a number of modules available for sending emails to our users. Many of them are still currently under heavy development, or had their development stopped after the release of a previous version of Drupal. One of these modules is Simplenews, which is a native Drupal system for managing newsletters.

One limitation of the Simplenews module, and most of the modules available, is that it can't send to all our users; it requires users to subscribe to the mailing list.

We can manage the Simplenews module via Administer | Newsletter. The features available to us are quite comprehensive. Let's have a look at how the module works:

Newsletters are created and managed from here

Users subscribe to various Newsletters

Users can be imported into Newsletters to become a subscriber

A message is sent to a newsletter (this is referred to as an issue) by creating Newsletters content

Issues which have been sent are saved within the module

Issues which have not yet been sent are saved within the module as drafts

By default, we have a newsletter, which is generic to our site based on our site name.

From here we can also create new Newsletters should we wish so. The Subscriptions tab allows us to see and manage the subscriptions to our various newsletters, the Sent issues tab lists issues sent out to the newsletter lists, and the Drafts tab lists issues which are still being written. From within the Settings tab, we can set how new issues for newsletters are created, as well as the email address shown as the sender of issues.

Don't forget to set the permissions; you want your users to be able to subscribe to newsletters.

Users can subscribe to newsletters from within their account, or we can enable blocks for the relevant newsletters we have on our site.

To send an "issue" to our newsletter list, we need to create the issue as a new content element via Create content | Newsletter issue.

We enter the subject of our email as the Title, select the newsletter to send the message to from the Newsletter drop-down list, and the message is entered into the Bodybox.

Beneath these options, we have some newsletter specific-options within the Newsletter sending options box. These options allow us to set the priority of the email message (this is often ignored by email clients), if we wish to request a receipt to see if a user has read the message (this is also often ignored by email clients) and finally, we can select a sending method.

There are three sending methods, which are:

Don't send now this won't send the message, and will save it as a draft.

Send one test newsletter to the test addressóthis will send the email message to the test email addresses, which we can set in the administration area. This allows us to review the newsletter, as if we were a subscriber, make any final alterations and then send it to our list.

Send newsletteróthis sends the email to our newsletter list.

How to send an email to all our users?

We can use the module to send an email to all of our users, by taking advantage of the subscriber import feature. Within Administer | Content management | Newsletters | Subscriptions, we have the ability to Import subscriptions, as shown in the following screenshot:

Importing subscribers consists of entering the E-mail addresses (separated by a comma) and selecting the newsletter which we wish the user to subscribe to. To get all of our current members to subscribe to the mailing list, we could export all of our users' email addresses directly from the Drupal database, using a tool such as phpMyAdmin. If we use the tool correctly, we can even get the data in a comma-separated list ready to be pasted into the form.

Drupal 6 Social Networking

Build a social or community web site, with friends lists, groups, custom user profiles, and much more

Step-by-step instructions for putting together a social networking site with Drupal 6

Customize your Drupal installation with modules and themes to match the needs of almost any social networking site

Allow users to collaborate and interact with each other on your site

Requires no prior knowledge of Drupal or PHP; but even experienced Drupal users will find this useful to modify an existing installation into a social web site

  http://www.packtpub.com/build-social-networking-website-with-drupal-6/book

HTML emails

In order to send HTML (that is, nicely formatted) emails, and emails as attachments to our newsletters, we would need to install the Mime Mail module from http://drupal.org/project/mimemail.

Give it a try
We have covered module installation and configuration extensively; so why not try and install the module yourself and experiment with HTML newsletters.

Legalities

There are legalities involved with sending bulk emails, and mailing lists, especially with regards to SPAM. Most countries have their own laws relating to this.

Throttling

When web sites send out bulk email campaigns, it is important to be careful about their frequency of emails. If all emails in the campaign are sent at once, this could be seen as a sign of SPAM, leading to blacklisting on mail servers, and also penalties from many shared hosts. If emails are sent out slowly, it may take a long time for a campaign to be sent out to all recipients.

The Simplenews module allows us to configure the frequency of the emails sent. These settings can be accessed from Administer | Site configuration | Simplenews | Send mail. Here the cron box is checked, indicating that emails are sent each time the Drupal cron script is called. The Cron throttle defines how many newsletters are sent each time the Drupal cron script is called. By default, it is set to 20, which is very low. So this should be changed perhaps to 100 or 500. You may wish to contact your hosting company for advice on email limits imposed by them.

Third-Party Services

Besides allowing us to run our own email newsletter service from within Drupal, a number of the available modules allow us to make use of third-party mailing list systems.

PHPList

PHPList is a popular mailing list system written in PHP, if we were to use this system (particularly useful if our Drupal social network is part of a group of sites, or part of a larger site which does not use Drupal), we can use the PHPList integration module to:

Synchronize users from Drupal to our PHPList system

Send targeted mailings based on the values of a user's profile

Allow users to manage their PHPList subscriptions from within their account

Bulk import into PHPList, if we already have a Drupal installation running with many users

This module can be downloaded from http://drupal.org/project/phplist, while PHPList can be downloaded from http://www.phplist.com

PHPList involves some server configuration; so if PHPList is the solution for you, make sure you read the documentation thoroughly.

Constant contact

Constant contact (http://www.constantcontact.com/index.jsp) is an online email marketing service, which manages newsletter subscriptions itself, with a particular focus on privacy and security for subscribers on mailing lists. Drupal 5 had a module to easily link into a constant contact account, http://drupal.org/project/constant_contact. This module, at the time of writing is not available for Drupal 6. But it is worth looking out for updates of this module or an alternative module to take its place if you wish to use constant contact to provide newsletters for your social network.

Google Groups

Google Groups are essentially mini social networks that operate in a way similar to groups in our network with the Organic Groups module. Many organizations and projects, such as open source software projects, make use of Google Groups to complement their communication and collaboration areas. If you wish to use Google Groups to complement your social network, then there is a module to allow users to subscribe to your group directly from the site. The module can be downloaded from http://drupal.org/project/google_groups. This module would probably be of little use if you used the organic groups module because the organic groups module provides very similar functionality. Problems with using a service such as Google Groups is that we are limited in terms of controlling the layout of our communications losing any branding associated with our site, and a potential loss of revenue when we may have used advertisements on our site or on our own newsletter.

Direct contact

If our social network is an extension of something else, for instance an online supplement to an organization dedicated to the promotion and support of keeping dinosaurs as pets, then we may wish to contact users of our social network using an offline method.

The Address module allows users to supply a physical address and a telephone number, which means we could post newsletters to our users. This would primarily be of use to organizations which are already producing paper mailers to a wide audience, where the online social network is used to complement the services provided by these organizations; otherwise offline contacting may not be cost effective.

The address module

Having installed the address module, and having given users permissions to create an address book, we can collect the addresses, telephone numbers, and fax numbers of our users.

User's perspective

From the user's perspective, they can easily store and edit addresses and contact details from within their accounts, via the Address Book tab.

Administrator's perspective

Unfortunately, this module was designed to complement other modules (for example, the e-Commerce module) in providing a convenient location for users to store their address for later use (such as ordering products for delivery with the e-Commerce module). There is no back-end interface to allow us, as administrators, to view the contact details of our users. We can, however, gain access to the information from the database directly, and can then maintain our own records from there, or from the $user array via custom PHP code. An alternative would be to create additional user profile fields, which can be read only by administrators.

Content blocks

Modules and themes often make use of blocks to display small blocks of content in specific areas of the web site, generally including the web sites header, the sidebars on the left and right-hand side of the screen, the footer, and the main content area, as well as dynamic functionality, such as group information in the Organic groups module. Blocks we have previously been using, such as with the Organic groups module, are dynamic and populated by the modules that created them. Blocks don't have to be dynamic; we can create blocks of our own to display content that doesn't change dynamically.

We can make use of these blocks to display information and messages to our users. For instance, if we wanted to communicate with guest users, we could create a content block with information on the benefits of joining the site.

Creating a content block for anonymous users

Navigate to Administer | Site building | Blocks.

Select the Add block tab.

Enter a Description, Title and Body for the block, with the benefits of joining in the Block body box.

Under Role-specific visibility settings, select Show blog for specific roles for anonymous users.

Under Page-specific visibility settings, select the block to be visible on all pages.

Save block.

Once created, the block is displayed on our site for users who are not logged in:

Theme customizations for communication

We could also use the look and feel of our site to communicate with our users. The following are some examples of what we could do:

A simple bar of information, perhaps relating to a specific feature

A simple bar of information, perhaps relating to a specific feature

CSS (cascading style sheets) pop ups with information

A collapsible message, where the user can click an icon to expand an administrative message, which we can update periodically

These options require knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Drupal themes.

Summary

In this article, we looked at how weóas administrators can communicate with our users using a variety of methods including:

Newsletters and mailing lists

Third-party mailing lists

Content blocks

We now have a fully functional social network. Our users can contribute to the site, communicate with each other, and we can communicate with them.

IP to Locale: Redirecting users based on IP address

I just released an inital Beta of IP 2 Locale. I'd love to hear any feedback you may have...

Drupal is set up fairly well for multilingual sites. However, it does make the assumption that each site version will be written in a different language. It is quite feasible however, that there be two versions of a site in the same language. For example, A site which has a UK version, and a version for the Republic of Ireland. Both sites are written in English, but the content varies for each. Drupal's multilingual features provide the perfect tools to allow 'translation' of content from one version of the site to another, but In a setup like this, it may also be desirable to automatically redirect users to a particular version of the site based on their IP address. Drupal's built in Language negotiation does not cater for this...

IP 2 Locale is able to redirect users to a specific site version based on the originating country of their IP address. It can use one or more IP lookup modules to translate the users IP address into a country code. Mappings can then be provided from country code to language code, and these mappings will be used to determine which version of the site to redirect to. Redirections can be configured to happen for the initial page request of a 'session' only (where 'session' is, a user coming from external site), or for every single page request.

IP to Locale currently supports IP to Country lookup by one or more the following modules:

ip2cc

ip2country

geoip

http://drupal.org/project/ip2locale

Drupal n'Go - Site Recipes

Recently the Irish Drupal community helped three Irish non-profits as part of a Drupal n'Go challenge. It was a great weekend and at the end of the event, we had three fantastic new websites. You can read more about the event at Drupal community hits Galway and helps three Irish charities.

VPS tuning advice

Hi all,
I'm running a zen Based VPS at blacknight with some, relatively speaking, low traffic sites.

I upgraded one of those sites to Drupal 6 this morning, and now the server seems to have gone haywire.

I'd appreciate any advice as to how to recover the situation.

One of the sites is www.athenryac.com, and judging from the browser, a connection is being made to the server,
and it is is either extremely slow, or just times out.
Even ssh access is very slow.

The server is running Ubuntu 8.4.01
Php 5
with APC installed.
Mysql 5.

Phpinfo, and my.cnf pasted below.

I've noted two things which others might be able to explain for me.

Running htop - it show that on the server, many of the CPUs running at 100%.
Many Apache processes seem to be running at 100%.
Screenshot attached.

Running netstat -t shows a whole heap of connections coming from what looks like a yahoo crawler.
But again, perhaps this is normal...
Screenshot also attached

The server was running fine up till today, and as I learn my way with server administration,
I didn't make any huge changes.
I've been slowly changing MySQL conf based on the tuning script at
http://www.day32.com/MySQL/
I have left Apache config as default.

[I should point out, I tried changing a lot of things in apache config (increasing max clients, decresing timeout values etc) to recover the situation, but as it did nothing useful to help I went back to square one].

Something somewhere is wrong, So any help appreciated.

Kind regards

Alan

PHP Info
from php -i
attached

MySQL info
Information in a extra.cnf, within the /etc/mysql/conf.d directory

[mysqld]
skip-innodb
character-set-server = utf8
default-collation = utf8_unicode_ci
table_cache             = 512
max_heap_table_size     = 48M
tmp_table_size          = 392M
query_cache_limit       = 6M
query_cache_size        = 64M

RDF in core code sprint

There are only a few months left before the code freeze on September 1st. Now that Fields API has settled in core, it's time to extend it with some RDF semantics. DERI Galway is hosting an RDF in Drupal code sprint during the week of May 11th until May 14th.

Goals of the code sprint

The RDF code sprint will focus on Drupal core and aim at integrating RDF semantics in it.

Extend Fields API to integrate RDF mappings for each field instance. The semantics of a field can differ from a bundle to another. This can be stored either in the existing
settings
property or by adding a
rdf_mappings
property to the Field Instance objects.

Modify the Fields UI (contrib) to allow RDF mappings editing.

Define the appropriate mappings for the core modules, based on the RDF core mapping proposal.

Patch core modules with the mappings defined above.

Export these mappings in RDFa via the theme layer and keep it as generic as possible in order to ease the work of the themers.

Write tests for RDF in core.

Identify other non-fieldable entities in core which could benefit from being RDF-ized, and see how to annotate them. Comment is one example. Terms also, though they might become fieldable.

RSS 1 (RDF) in core. Arto volunteered to get started with that.

See a list of current open RDF issues in RDF issues in core.
See also the RDF code sprint wiki page where we will keep an up to date list of goals.

Discussion and open issues

Should modules be allowed to change these mappings via a hook_alter?

Participants

Stéphane Corlosquet, DERI (organizer)

Florian Loretan, HappyPixels (organizer)

Rolf Guescini, Cerpus

Benjamin Melançon, Agaric Design

Stefan Freudenberg, Agaric Design

Frédéric G. Marand, OSInet

Mark Birbeck, webBackplane

John Morahan, io1

This list is not closed. If you or your group have expertise in Drupal core development + RDF and would to participate, please contact me directly at stephane.corlosquet@deri.org. We are specifically looking for people familiar with the Fields API, theming and testing.

Sponsoring

We are looking for sponsors to help funding travels and accommodation for some of the participants. There are a couple of developers who are willing to come but cannot afford their flight without sponsoring.

Get to Galway, Ireland

You can either fly to:

Dublin and get a direct bus from the airport to Galway (3h ride) for 25 euros return or alternatively get the train from Heuston station in Dublin to Galway (30min bus + 2,5 train).

Shannon and catch a direct bus to Galway (2h) 23 euros with Citylink.

Galway and catch a cab to the city (~20 euros). Flights are more expensive and mostly from the UK only.

Ryanair and Aerlingus among others fly to Ireland.

Accommodation

Sleepzone Hostel (Budget): Backpacker hostel close to the town centre/Eyre Square. Friendly staff and generally hassle free in my experience, though can be a lot of passing noise on the street outside. Free wifi in the spacious kitchen and lounge area, plus an internet room. Basic breakfast included in the price last time I stayed. Some private rooms, or you can sometimes get a whole dorm room to yourself if you don't want to share. A decent budget option.

Westwood House Hotel(Top End): Just across the road from DERI Galway, on the outskirts of town. Quite upmarket. I haven't stayed here, but the restaurant is decent. Possibly a good option if you just want to visit the DERI building, but maybe a bit inconvenient if you want to get to and from town frequently?

Corrib haven : 5 minutes walk from DERI, a nice BnB. Bacon / Eggs / Sausages for breakfast. Not sure if they have single rooms, the price for a double one is usually 35pps. They have a wifi access, but not working very well. There's another BnB in front of that one, almost the same prices. Yet, as for Westwood, it's a bit far from the city center.

Right next to the Corrib Haven (see above). The website looks a bit outdated, but the BnB is nice (I stayed there myself once).

Not sure they have wifi, but it's brand new and really clean, at least in the lounge / kitchen, I didn't try the rooms.

DERI (Galway) makes headlines - Drupal grabs tail

Folks,

Have a look at this on RTE - Read to the last line!

http://www.rte.ie/business/2009/0403/obama.html

Do I see Drupal mentioned in the Biz/tech section. Nah! must be dreaming, must check again, yep its there alright. Hats off to Scor & all the DERI gang for the high profile hit. Anybody know how much Drupal is being used by the Obama administration?

Beginner Request Views Help Needed with editable Attachments display

Hiya Drupal Ireland

I'm very new to Drupal and was hoping for some help with creating a site for assignment submission, grading and publishing. I would like for different groups to be able to edit different cck fields at different stages of a workflow process but am having trouble getting the editable fields to be displayed. I've included a pdf of the view with some comments but I'm hoping the group will be able to tell me how to

set up the page view so the attachment view only shows the selected node details
allow the designated user to update the content type by adding values to the displayed fields and progress the node to the next workflow stage

I've posted my problem to the drupal forum but haven't got any responses yet. Apologies if this is the wrong medium for this request

Michael

On behalf of all the organizers, I'd like to thank all those who came to the event on Saturday/Sunday. In order to improve the organization of the next events and also share what we learnt, we need feedback from the attendees. Please leave your comments below. What did you like? What did you not like? How can we improve such an event? Don't hesitate to shout whether it's positive or negative. If you want to keep your feedback private or anonymous, please send them to stephane.corlosquet@deri.org.

We are planning to write a report for other groups to organize similar events, as a result any feedback is valuable.

Thanks.
Downloads section in Drupal

Hi guys,

My name is Phil and Im a newbie. I am currently working on a community of practice website that will be offered to primary school teachers as a place to discuss, share and forulate ideas on how best to teach children science in primary schools. I am developing resources for this site that teachers or parents can download to use within their classes such as lesson plans, lesson content and worksheets.

What I would hope to have on the site would be a downloads section or area that people could go to freely browse and download content. Also it would be cool if people could go there and upload files too. I have been looking around for a module to do this and I can't seem to find what Im looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am working on my own on this and I am a complete noob so feel free to be blunt if im missing something obvious, the site is live in a pretty rough form at www.bdi.ie/drupal

Thanks for your time and hope to see you in Galway,

Kind Regards,

Phil

Drupal n'Go Competition Winners!

We had a great response to our Drupal n'Go competition from charities, not-for-profits and voluntary groups all across Ireland. We received almost 50 applications, each of which was a particularly compelling case, with urgent needs, which made it a difficult decision to make.

However, we're pleased to announce that the two lucky winners are:

Rural Science Association

Zikomo Ireland

Rural Science Association

The Rural Science Association is a nascent professional organisation which comprises individuals from all parts of Ireland (generally residing in rural areas) who hold or are currently studying to obtain a formal qualification in the discipline of rural development. The Organisation was formally launched at their inaugural conference which was held in May last year. Membership numbers currently stand at c. 70. In addition to its inaugural conference, the Rural Science Association has, to date, organised two weekend workshops which sought to act as 'think tanks' on how to progress rural development in the emerging 'new economy'.

Zikomo Ireland

Zikomo Ireland is a Galway-based registered charity group that is committed to fostering long-term self-sufficiency in southern Malawi. They work in partnership with rural communities to ensure that our projects have a lasting, positive impact on people's lives in one of the poorest regions in the world.

Additional prize - Shadowbox Theatre Company

We also decided to do a small basic website for the Shadowbox Theatre Company who lost their main funding earlier this year.

Shadowbox Theatre Company was formed in 1998, recognising the need for high quality professional arts work for people who may have little access to mainstream arts activity in Ireland. The company has worked extensively in the following two areas:

On reminiscence and theatre projects involving various groups of older people around Ireland.

Working with groups of people living with Mental Health problems and intellectual disabilities through theatre.

The company has always been committed to placing their work within an international context, and exploring diverse working methods towards theatre making. Shadowbox believe that every member of society has creative potential, and has the right to develop this. They seek to facilitate groups to access their artistic creativity and believe that, when explored properly, we can use art as a forum for growth and social change.

Unfortunately we weren't able to pick everybody, and we wish all of our other applicants the very best in the future.

CahirParkAFC.ie built with Drupal

Hello there,

We are live with our new soccer club website http://www.cahirparkafc.ie built using Drupal.

Used Organic Groups for the 'Teams' of the club.

Set up Content Types with CCK for 'Games', 'Squads', 'Sponsors' and 'Events' (club meetings, training, etc as Event taxonomy types)

Went with taxonomy also for Competitions, Referees, Venues, Opposition Clubs

Using the calendar module to show events and games.

Using Views for Sponsors and Fixtures/Results.

Using slideshowcs for the top banner.

I have a few things to iron out with Profiles, Match results and Squad pages but there is enough there for the launch.

Any feedback appreciated!

Thanks,

Gaeilge Localisation file

Hi All,
I am working on a project at present where I need an irish (gaeilge) version of the website as well. I have took a look at drupal.org/project/Translations but cant find a translation file there for Irish. One of my good friends is 110% fluent / efficient / certified in Irish and said he would help me translate whatever is needed if this doesnt exist. I take it all I need to create is a .po file and then upload for others to use once its checked?

What does the group think of this? Would this be OK for me to go ahead and create or is there a drupal community process to go through / someone I need to work with once I have the translation done?. Far as I can see its not available, and could possibly be of benefit to someone in the group here at some stage down the line ?

Press release: Drupal Ireland event - 4th & 5th April, DERI, NUI Galway

This is the press release that you can use to announce the event in your blog or mailing lists.

The next Drupal Ireland event is taking place on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th April in the DERI building at NUI, Galway and will run from 10am to 5pm both days. Registration is free and you can now sign-up for this event at http://www.drupalireland.com.

Presentations in two tracks: White belt and black belt

On the Saturday, the event will include presentations from experienced Drupal developers where people can lear more about Drupal, what it can do and how it can benefit both them and their organisation. There will be two tracks, so participants of all levels will be catered for.

White Belt track: For newcomers and beginners.

Black Belt track: For intermediates and experts.

Hands-on collaborative activity

On the Sunday, we have an exciting hands-on activity planned to allow everyone the chance to participate and put their new knowledge to good use. Drupal n'Go: two teams will be going head-to-head designing two websites for two Irish not-for-profits, in 24 hours! This is a fantastic opportunity during which you will not only gain invaluable experience with Drupal and get to participate in the entire website development process from start to finish, but will also have the opportunity to help two worthy organisations.

Everyone can bring something to the team: web developers, graphic designers, Drupal developers, programmers, testers, usability experts, content writers, and others all have a part to play. This serves as a chance to give new users an opportunity to learn more about what Drupal can do, and for more experienced developers to expand upon their existing knowledge.

Document as-we-go

Not only that, but we are honoured to have Drupal's very own Addison Berry, head of the documentation team, coming from the US in attendance. In parallel with the website challenge, Addison will be leading be a documentation sprint.

Participating in the sprint is an excellent way to get involved with the community and make a meaningful contribution to the Drupal project. It aims at creating cleaner, clearer, and more accessible documentation for members of the Drupal community. If you are a beginner and learning about Drupal, there is a great deal of help you can provide by explaining Drupal with an outsider perspective.

About Drupal

Drupal is a powerful open source content management system which allows users to easily publish, manage and share a wide variety of content on the internet. There is a great demand for people who know this software and demand is growing. Drupal's many features and add-ons allow it to be used for a variety of website needs; including for marketing, internal communications, informational websites, and for social networking purposes. Organisations such as the HEA, Galway Cycling Campaign, CROI, Oxegen, Concern Fast and the Irish Science Gallery all use Drupal for their website. See http://www.drupal.org

About the Irish Drupal user group

This event is being organised by the Drupal Ireland user group- a volunteer membership group. The group is comprised of developers who use Drupal everyday; who contribute to Drupal core, documentation and maintain popular modules.

Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, this event is being held free of charge. Lunch is also being provided, and while registration is free, we would ask people to register before hand so we can cater accordingly.

More information on the event, including accommodation and car pooling, can be found at http://groups.drupal.org/node/18452

Forms in Drupal

Can someone recommend a 'form' block. I'm looking for something more complex that the contact form which allows me to create a number of fields for the user to fill (some compulsory) - results to be stored in a database and email sent both to user and named contact.

I'm a Drupal newbie. I can do all this in PHP already but I think there must be something suitable in Drupal (searching Drupal sites has not located it - perhaps I'm missing something obvious).

Controlling comments within advanced forum topics

Does anyone know how to control the number of comments displayed within a forum topic on a single page. If say there are more than 15 comments within that topic I want to display the page thread at the bottom, similar to the way you can with views.
I am using Advanced Forum Module - Drupal 6 but cant seem to find an option to do this anywhere via the admin interface. Is there something I am misisng here for my setup?

Free website on offer to non-profits!

In April, two teams of web developers will be getting together to build two websites for two selected 'not for profits'/charities in Ireland.

Despite the growing importance of the Internet in daily communications, many groups are left behind because they have neither the skills nor the resources or time to build a website. To address this, the Drupal developer community in Ireland will build two websites in 24 hours as part of "DrupalCamp", a conference in Galway. Two teams will face off against each other to create these websites, and one team will win a prize.

The websites will be built on a free, secure content management system called Drupal. Drupal allows you to easily update your website by simply logging in and clicking 'edit' on your screen. This allows you to have complete control of your site's content. A team of developers will be dedicated to working on your site for 24 hours. Organisations such as the HEA, Galway Cycling Campaign, CROI, Oxegen, Concern Fast and the Irish Science Gallery all use Drupal for their website.

Before the day you will have the opportunity to sit down and discuss your site with your team leader, including features and design. You will also be in direct contact with the whole team during the challenge. On the day, training will be provided to a staff member of your choice which will enable you to make optimal use of your site. Your site will be fully styled to your liking and will be hosted for free thanks to our sponsors.

"This is a great opportunity for a non profit to get a great website from a standing start, and that will help them to reach their audience into the future" says Alan Burke, one of the organisers.

About Drupal

The Drupal social publishing system has been downloaded over 2 million times since its inception, and project growth has doubled annually for several years. Tens of thousands of people and organizations are using Drupal to power scores of different websites, including Community web portals, Discussion sites, Corporate websites, Intranet applications, Personal websites or blogs, Aficionado sites, E-commerce applications, Resource directories, Social Networking sites. A huge community has grown up around Drupal, with thousands of active contributors to the open source technology, including nearly 2000 community-developed modules for extending Drupal functionality.

About the Irish Drupal user group

We are a volunteer group of almost 100 members who use Drupal daily and contribute to the Drupal project, from novice users to advanced experts. Local meetings happen every month in Dublin and Galway, and on a national level twice a year.

About DrupalCamp

DrupalCamp Galway is a 2 day gathering of Drupal users in Ireland, to discuss, share experiences and learn more about the Drupal software.

Deadline to submit is 17 March 2009. In your submission you should include a basic list of desired features, an outline of the site and some information about the work your organisation does.

To get your organisation involved contact:
Stella Power, Email: stella@annertech.com Tel: 086 3811881
Stephane Corlosquet, Email: scorlosquet@gmail.com

ClickandBuy (as used by itunes, 7digital, mp3.de) payment gateway module now available for Drupal eCommerce.

hi Guys,

Just a quick heads up about a new module called ClickandBuy that's almost ready for a beta release.

ClickandBuy is a popular payment gateway that is used by Apple Itunes Music Store, 7Digital, MP3.de, publishers such as BILD.DE, Wall Street Online, Habbo, Welt Online, Spiegel Online, TV companies such as MTV, RTL Interactive, 7, N-tv.de and internationbal companies like T-Mobile, BT (British Telecom), MSN, WEB.de, Telefonica and Orange.

ClickandBuy supports 13 languages and 46 different local & national payment methods, including Credit/debit cards, online direct debit, online bank transfer, e-money and their own ClickandBuy accounts.

More details are available across on the ClickandBuy project page, but, I thought it worth a mention as it is a payment gateway that is in use by so many well known music shops, like itunes, 7 digital and others. It's also licensed for e-Money by the British Financial Services Authority (FSA) which is arguably better coverage than what Paypal offers..i.e. Paypal isn't a bank so doesn't have to comply with normal banking regulations and protection.

The fees for ClickandBuy vary. The deal I got was 1.9% + 0.35 EUR per transaction..which is not a million miles from competitive rates. I'm hoping to persuade ClickandBuy to open up a free setup and good rates deal for Drupal users. So if you're thinking of using this payment gateway, please drop me an email.

ClickandBuy project page: http://drupal.org/project/ec_clickandbuy

Cheers

Dub

Reporting a Drupal Spammer

Hi guys,
I have become plagued by a mystery spammer - see //drupal.org/user/425309 who has got onto my sites forum on several occassions and posted literally hundreds of posts on the pills he is selling from america. He even had the cheek to leave his profile which I was able to track. Is there any way to report him for this, let alone the fact he is doing it on his drupal profile as well?

Best practice for search and replace - Module or direct SQL for Drupal

Best practice for search and replace - Module or direct SQL for Drupal.I guess I probably should have posted this before doing the work :) Basically I wanted to change all strings (in title, body content, CCk's etc from "product1" to say "product2".
At first, after a backup, I tried to do it via phpMyAdmin SQL tab with:

SELECT REPLACE(’product1’, ‘product1’, ‘product2’);
but this did not work at all, even though it said the query executed correctly, so I assume I was running the right syntax?

I then came accross a great little Search and replace module at drupal.org/project/search_and_replace by btopro which worked a treat for me. However, I was left wondering if the best way for a task like this is via a module as its bound to happen regularly for people.
How does everyone else carry out a search and replace on strings within Drupal?
Another option I thought of was downloading the database, carrying out the search and replace there with a third party tool, and then reuploading but the module was much much quicker!

Author credit on RSS, recommendation?

I'm working on an artist's network here in Ireland. Artists blog as part of a research project looking at artists' practice. There are also site updates, news, links, etc.

One of the concerns the artists have is attribution on their posts which appear in the RSS feed.

I tried making some widgets based on the feed, and building custom RSS feeds with views.

How can I get the post author's name on the feed? Ideally, I'd like to use their profile>first_name and profile>last_name instead of the username.

Thanks for any leads.

DrupalCamp Galway 09 - Drupal n'GO challenge + Documentation Sprint

During times of recession and job losses it's always useful to develop a new skill or two. DERI based in the IDA Business park is holding a Drupal Ireland event. This event is taking place on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th April and the event will run from 10am to 5pm both days. Registration is free. You can sign-up for this event below.

Drupal is a powerful open source content management system (that is a free software system) which allows users to easily publish, manage and share a wide variety of content on the internet. You can basically develop and build your own website without needing to know how to code or program. Drupal's many features and add-ons allow it to be used for a variety of website needs; including for marketing, internal communications, informational websites, and for social networking purposes.

On the Saturday, the event will include presentations from experienced Drupal developers where people can learn more about Drupal, what it can do and how it can benefit them in terms of a possible business presence online or even help the current organisations they work for. There will be two tracks, so participants of all levels will be catered for including complete beginners. This is an opportunity during which you can learn entire website development process from start to finish in one afternoon. Addison Berry, head of the Drupal documentation team from the US will lead the learning for both of the days that weekend.

Schedule for Saturday

The weekend will be a mix of DrupalCamp and Drupal site building challenge.
There will be 2 tracks: newbies and developers.

Saturday
10:00 - registration
10:30 - presentations start.
12:30 - lunch (provided by our sponsors)
13:30 - afternoon sessions
16:30 - the site building challenge starts!

See a detailed schedule at http://groups.drupal.org/node/20729 where you can suggest what you would like to hear about. You can also add your name if you want to present something.

In parallel during this event, 2 groups of Drupal developers will work on building 2 real working Drupal sites for 2 good causes. They will have 24 hours to complete their website. We have called organizations, charities and NGOs from Ireland to submit their site proposal. 2 organisations will be chosen from the submissions and announced in advance.

2 teams will be formed (one team per site). A team leader will be designated in advance and will have taken care of a few things prior to the event:
- get in touch with the organisation they will be dealing with
- make sure the scale, complexity and features of their project are feasible in one day
- prepare the hosting for their site (the organisation will have a working site by the end of the weekend).
- make sure everything is ready for the day of the competition
Each team leader will have a good Drupal knowledge, good communication skills and be able to organise people.

Other roles will be assigned within the teams on the day. A team will consist of: designers, site builders, themers, developers, trainers, mentors for newbies etc. Each team will be composed of at least 10 members, advanced Drupal developers mixed with newbies. One goal of the challenge is to bring newbies up to speed with site building in a comfortable and fun environment where they can learn from the more advanced users based on a real world website. They might provide non-drupal skills e.g. webdesign, usability, graphics, SEO, content writing etc.

Each team will meet their respective "client" who will explain what is envisioned to have on the site, followed by some initial discussion within the team and planning for the next day.

Schedule for Sunday

The challenge continues. In parallel there will be a documentation sprint which will be lead by Drupal's very own Addison Berry, head of the documentation team, coming from the US in attendance. Read more about the last documentation sprint which happened at DrupalCon DC.

Sunday 16:30: End of the challenge. Each team will have 15 mins to present the site they built. A panel of 3 judges will then decide which team wins (prize to be decided...). The panel will be composed of:
- 1 member representing the organising committee.
- 1 member from a non profit (not involved in any of the 2 organisations participating in the challenge)
- 1 member from the Irish web community

The challenge event is inspired by http://www.fullcodepress.com/rules/

Drupal n'Go Competition Winners

We had a great response to our Drupal n'Go competition from charities, not-for-profits and voluntary groups all across Ireland. We received almost 50 applications, each of which was a particularly compelling case, with urgent needs, which made it a difficult decision to make.

However, we're pleased to announce that the two lucky winners are:

Rural Science Association

Zikomo Ireland

We also decided to do a small basic website for the Shadowbox Theatre Company who lost their main funding earlier this year.

See http://groups.drupal.org/node/20492 to learn more about these organisations.

Registration for the event

Please register prior to the event: either create an account and then click on the sign up button on this page, or send an email to stephane.corlosquet@deri.org. We are asking everybody to register in order to know the numbers in advance. Lunch will be provided by our generous sponsors.

Sponsors

So far we have 5 organisations sponsoring the event.

Get to Galway and the venue

The event is taking place in DERI, which is located in the IDA business park in Lower Dagan. If you are driving, follow the directions to Clifden (N59) until you reach a traffic light at the entrance of the IDA business park: it will be on your right (coming from the city) or straight (coming from Westside). A map showing the venue location can be found at http://useamap.com/deri

You can either fly to:

Dublin and get a direct bus from the airport to Galway (3h ride) for 25 euros return or alternatively get the train from Heuston station in Dublin to Galway (30min bus + 2,5 h train).

Westwood House Hotel (Top End): Just across the road from DERI Galway, on the outskirts of town. Quite upmarket. Possibly a good option if you just want to visit the DERI building, but maybe a bit inconvenient if you want to get to and from town frequently.

The Abbey House BnB - Just down the road from DERI, about 3 mins walking. Right next to the Corrib Haven (see above). The website looks a bit outdated, but the BnB is nice. Prices are in

Snoozle's (Budget): Another backpaper hotel in the city center (2 minutes from the new coach station). Not sure they have wifi, but it's brand new and really clean, at least in the lounge / kitchen.

The Heron's Rest BnB in town

The house hotel (top end) very nice hotel, excellent location in the heart of the city.

Devondell BnB 45 euros. In Salthill, maybe not the best location for this event though unless you don't mind walking or taking a cab.

See the hotels on a map. Hostel World can also help you to find cheap accommodation in Galway.

If you are short in terms of accommodation, get in touch with the organizers.

When is the next Dublin Drupal meetup?

Hi,

Just wondering if there is a meetup arranged for the near future? Would be very interested in meeting some other developers to discuss some potential work on my site http://AllHonours.ie.

If any Irish based developers fancy some work, give me a shout to discuss some high level requirements.

Cheers,

Patrick.

Access a single object inside an array

Hi all,
Some more basic PHP help requested [I know, I really should go to a PHP forum for this stuff :-)]

For a vocabulary with only one term allowed, taxonomy module can return you that information via
http://api.drupal.org/api/function/taxonomy_node_get_terms_by_vocabulary
.
That returns something like this

<?php
#
... (Array, 1 element)

    *
      125 (Object) stdClass
          o
            tid (String, 3 characters ) 125
          o
            vid (String, 1 characters ) 3
          o
name (String, 6 characters ) Dublin
          o
            description (String, 0 characters )
          o
            weight (String, 1 characters ) 0
?>

which is basically one object, the term, inside an array.
Because its a keyed array, with the tid as the key, I can't just go

<?php
return $county[0]->name;
?>

I'm guessing there is a better way to access that data rather than what I currently do, which is a bit convoluted, to say the least.

<?php
      $county = taxonomy_node_get_terms_by_vocabulary($vars['node'],3);
       foreach ($county as $item) {
       $countyname = $item->name;
       }
?>

Any input appreciated?

Regards
Alan

Plans for the next Drupal event in Galway

This is the form of event Alan and I would like to organise in Galway in April. This event has been announced! see http://groups.drupal.org/node/18452

Drupal site building competition

On Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of April 2009 in Galway, 2 groups of Drupal developers will work on building 2 real working Drupal sites for 2 good causes. They will have 24 hours to complete their website. We are calling organizations, charities and NGOs from Ireland to submit their site proposal. Any organisation can register as long as they are non for profit and do not have a Drupal site already running. (A few static HTML pages is the limit for being accepted).

2 organisations will be chosen from the submissions and announced in advance. They will have to be serious, reliable and able to come to Galway on the day of the event. They will need to have the content for their site ready (text, logo, images...). Free templates are available on the web (oswd). A rough template and workflow of the site is also required. The organisation will need to have someone in charge of maintaining the site up to date (adding events, blogging etc...) and this person will need to be present on the day of the event in order to be trained (only requires basic computer skills).

The weekend will be a mix of DrupalCamp and Drupal site building challenge.

Saturday 10am - 4:30pm: DrupalCamp where people present whatever they like. There will be at least 2 tracks: newbie and advanced.

Saturday 4.30pm: Preparation to the challenge: the audience will be split in 2 teams. (One team per site).

Other roles will be assigned within the teams on the day off: designers, site builders, themers, developers, trainers etc. Each team will be composed of at least 10 members, advanced Drupal developers mixed with newbies. One goal of the challenge is to bring newbies up to speed with site building in a comfortable and fun environment where they can learn from the more advanced users based on a real world website. They might provide non-drupal skills e.g. webdesign and usability.

Saturday 5pm onwards: The challenge starts! Each team will meet their respective "client" who will explain what he envisions to have on his site, followed by some initial discussion within the team and planning for the next day.

Sunday 5pm: End of the challenge. Each team will have 15 mins to present the site they built. A panel of 3 judges will then decide which team wins (prize to be decided...). The panel will be composed of:
- 1 member from the organising comity
- 1 member from a non profit (not involved in any of the 2 organisations participating in the challenge)
- 1 member from the Irish web community

The event will be inspired by http://www.fullcodepress.com/rules/

================================

A 2 day event of this nature will make the trip to Galway worth it. Please leave a comment to express your feedback on this. We'd like to gauge how many people from this group would be interested by this event.

We plan to use this event to make press releases and publicity around Drupal in Ireland. Anybody with some contacts or skills in this is welcome to contact us. This event will target not only the Drupalers but also web designers, web programmers, civil servants, public and private organisations...

We are trying to get a date for this event fixed as early as possible (possibly April 4th) so that we can distribute the promotion of the event. Contact Alan or myself if you want to help and promote the event in your university, workplace or other networks. Sponsors are also welcome. I have already booked the venue for the event, but any other sponsorship will be welcome (food, web hosting, printing, materials...).

Drupal Classes or Courses at 3rd level/Uni/College, online or face to face?

Does anyone know of academic institutions offering classes or courses which cover Drupal?

Both face to face and/or online?

NB: Not courses using Drupal as a medium, rather: Drupal as the subject matter.

I would love to hear from lecturers who are planning courses, or who have taught Drupal in their courses. I would like to see examples, how they fit in to the existing academic programmes in their institutions, how they promote it, and what the outcomes have been.

Thank you!

Metatags - Dublin Core or Custom

Hi folks,
I need to add custom metatags to nodes in particular I need to add the Dublin Core set eg "[meta name="DC.Creator" content="My organisation etc" ]". There are over 10 tags. Can I use nodewords or node (key)words module or is there a better way?

many thanks - Bren

Pattering matching /regular expression help

Hi all,

I need to do a simple filter to remove some odd character that get imported into my nodes [bulk import].

The characters are

ºº

and I need to replace them with a

<br />
.

I've built a little filter module, which will do the trick, but my regex skills are , well, non existent.

I've tried

<?php
$text = eregi('ºº','<br />',$text);
?>

to no avail.
