Whats NYC thinking about Google's chrome

Hey guys,

anybody checked out googles chrome browser? I know most of you are running the wormy apple but I tested it on my Win partition and I am pretty impressed. Never saw a nearly perfect browser in beta state.

Chrome is fast, a beauty, has nice features and no disturbing stuff... The biggest bonbon in my point of view is the suggest function in the address bar.

All my sites I ve worked on in the last couple of month are looking fantastic. No CSS glitches nothing. That was my biggest fear so I ve checked them all before the big fishes starting to bark :)

You can check it out here and subscribe for Linux/Mac news...

Have a nice weekend...

Dee

Conversation with hosting sponsor phase 2

I've spoken with David from HostMySite again. I've presented him with the discussion the group is leading based on initial inquiry: http://groups.drupal.org/node/14196 . He is fully aware of our concerns and requests. He will be sending us (/me) a contract which i will post here for review.

Short summary of most important questions posed at http://groups.drupal.org/node/14196 :
1) ownership? : We retain full ownership of all content we upload to the server. If any member of the group is worried regarding content ownership still, you are free(and very much encouraged) to cross post your content on other sites such as blip.tv, youtube.com, archive.org, etc. I will be doing so, you should as well.
2) Length of guaranteed service: David said that we may have indefinite service length (ha?) but on a more realistic note he said their standard is 1 year guaranteed. We have much breathing room.
3) Data backup/restore: they take daily incremental backup. weekly full server backup. we have Full support, the same kind any other paid member would get. again, we will cross post our content on many free services to ensure our content never gets destroyed.

These are all the most important questions that i have answers to. more answers will come when we see the contract.

I will personaly take the initial responsibility for this and in due time will find trustworthy individuals that will be granted full access information to the server to ensure i am not the only person in charge of this which will ensure continued existence of this resource for our group. For the skeptics: I am personally taking the initiative to do this by myself, for the group; Don't like it dont use it policy applies.

Forwarding this really cool opportunity to join the Democracy Now! team in New York. If you're a Linux Systems Admin with Drupal experience, this sounds like a fantastic opportunity to join a driven team of smart, passionate people working for justice. One of the responsibilities would be to develop new internal and public websites for them: sounds like Drupal would be a great fit!

Here's the info. It was taken from http://www.democracynow.org/about/jobs#sysadmin

============================================================

Immediate opening for full-time Systems Administrator

Democracy Now! is a daily, non-profit, national, independent news hour based in New York City. Our public website, which is is visited by tens of thousands of users daily, features the news hour every day in a variety of video, audio, and transcript formats, and also features a store selling copies of the program. Internally, we maintain a heterogeneous network of client and server computers to process, store, and record the show and its components and to support our general office and distribution operations. Democracy Now! is hiring a full-time Systems Administrator with extensive Linux experience to maintain, support, and extend these systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide desktop technical support to staff and volunteers, primarily on an Apple OS X platform.

Coordinate with external consultants and service providers who are responsible for some aspects of our technical operations.

Architect and, where practical, develop web sites and applications for public and internal use.

Research and suggest cost effective products and solutions which may improve organizational workflow.

QUALIFICATIONS

As a small organization with limited IT staff but diverse technological needs, we seek to hire someone who can work with a wide variety of technologies and quickly learn new technologies.

Experience configuring and maintaining GNU/Linux servers and an ability to create and maintain bash shell scripts are essential. The ideal candidate will also have experience with some or all of the following technologies: Free Software media processing tools including ffmpeg, mencoder, sox, dvgrab, and MP4Box; programming languages including Perl, Ruby on Rails, and Python; Apple OS X and Microsoft Windows desktop and application support, ideally including Final Cut Pro and Filemaker Pro; version-control systems such as Subversion and git; firewall maintenance with OpenBSD and pf; and web technologies including HTML, CSS, and XML.

Also essential are the abilities to manage several simultaneous projects and to research, select, and integrate new technologies. Experience in a non-profit or media environment is preferred, as is an interest in independent media and non-commercial television.

This is a full-time New York City-based position with benefits and salary based on experience. Democracy Now! is an Equal Opportunity Employer that actively recruits women, people of color, persons with disabilities, and persons with diverse gender and sexual identities.

To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter (PDF or plain text formats only) to job (at) democracynow (dot) org with “Systems Administrator” as the subject. No phone calls.

Intro to Drupal Presentation Wiki

Drupal Camp NYC 5 is about a week away! Let's bring together our plans for the intro section in this wiki page.

Right now we have a lot of discussion at http://groups.drupal.org/node/13828 , and it would be great if people could start adding items from that thread into this wiki page, indicating what is being presented, for how long, and by whom so we can hammer out an actual plan :)! Please continue the discussion of specific parts of the session in the comments for this wiki page. Thanks!

Please Note:This page is a work in progress. Check back a couple of days before Drupal camp for the final version.

Attendees!

Are you a newbie to Drupal wanting to see "what it's all about"? Want to leave Drupal camp with a working install of Drupal running on your machine to play with? Want to get a solid overview of how to set up Drupal, create and configure a basic site, and use some cool modules to add functionality? Then this is where you'll want to be on Saturday.

What you need to do BEFORE you come to DrupalCampNYC

If you bring a laptop (with power cord and extension cable - outlets are in short supply!) you can install Drupal on your computer and follow along with the set up. This is recommended as it means that you'll have something to play with when you've finished the session.

Download Drupal 6.4 to your computer

Make sure you have a program that can open .tar.gz files

For Windows Power Archiver is one freeware option. (Macs and Linux have this ability built-in.)

Download some software - but don't install it - we'll go through that first thing in the morning Saturday. This software lets your computer act like a web server, so we can install Drupal on it.

For Macs download MAMP

For Windows download WAMPServer

Download the 34 MB Installer file

For Linux download follow the instructions for your distro to setup the AMP components on your machine (Apache, MySQL, and PHP)

Download this archive (will make this link work later). This archive has (will have!) all the modules and supporting files that we'll be installing and using. By downloading them before you come to DrupalCamp you ensure that you'll be able to follow along with the presentation even if you have trouble accessing the internet at camp.

Here is the proposed schedule

As with any Barcamp all is subject to change the day of the camp.

What

Time (approx.)

Presenter

Description

Help Setting up your "AMP" stack (MAMP, WAMPServer, etc.)

9 am - 10:30

Peter Dowling (winstond), Sam Tresler, anyone else who wants to help out

Get help from experienced folks getting your machine ready for "hands on" while you have breakfast!

What is Drupal?

10:30 - 11:30

Steven Merril (smerril), Ezra?

What is a CMS? What is Drupal? jargon, who uses it, community plumbing, why we heart it, etc.

Set Up Drupal (Hands On)

11:30 - 12:30

Peter Dowling (winstond), (others??)

Walk through setting up an initial site from creating the database, running the install, and initial config.

Create a basic site (Hands On)

1:30 - 3:30

Peter Dowling (winstond) (others??)

We'll take our fresh Drupal install and put it through its paces. We'll install modules to enhance functionality, create content, set up user permissions, talk about blocks and layout, work on our menus, and maybe even try some different themes.

Next meetup - time to decide!

time to decide... what do you guys want to do for the next meetup :)

i personaly am going to try to do some of this: http://groups.drupal.org/node/14205 ; in time for the next meetup which will happen 1 month from now (~ 2 weeks from the drupalcon)

What would you like the agenda for the next meetup to be?
worth noting that the next meetup will be just 2 weeks after the camp, so we can discuss the camp as well as doing presentations.

by the way did you guys enjoy the pizza? was it good to have food at the meetup if you are coming right after work? i should probably start the next chipin for september's meetup. let me know how you enjoyed the pizza.

P.S. this discussion is not an event yet as i didnt want it to show up on the calendar until we have at least some items on the agenda list. so the sooner we figure this out the sooner we can start planning for the date.

DrupalNYC Social - Sept 4th.

HI!,

It's been a tumultuous couple of weeks here on g.d.o/nyc and I thought it would be good to get together and kick back, have a few drinks and snacks before we hit the Camp.

The Drupal Social is just that, a social. We descend on a bar and have a good time. No expectations, and no restrictions. The common thread is that we all like Drupal. It is assumed we'll wind up talking about it, there is no agenda, no presentations, and no real organization other than showing up at the same place at the same time. I'll be there starting around 7 and we may or may not end at 9.

That said, I haven't even chosen a venue, just a time. Where do ya'll want to go?!?

-Sam

LOCATION: 4th Ave Pub http://www.yelp.com/biz/4th-avenue-pub-brooklyn

correction to newsletter

A newsletter went out yesterday to all group members that mis-stated some facts about Drupal Camp, and blurred the important distinction between the monthly meetups and the Drupal Camp events.

No input was sought from the people organizing the Drupal Camp before the announcement was sent. In light of the recent discussion about unilateral actions and lack of concern for group process by our current group manager, I find the lack of spell checking, fact checking and input disturbing.

what was sent said

DrupalCamp NYC 5 (http://groups.drupal.org/node/332/drupalcamp) - It is finally here! Thank you Eric to have put so much effort to make DrupalCamp NYC 5 possible. Those that have been to last year's meetup know how great it was and those that missed it most defnitely should find out. All are welcome. We are quickly approaching the limit of people that we can accomodate. however we do have 2 full days reserved so i am sure we will be able to accomodate the demand between the two days. To see what sessions will be presented and/or how you can help Eric with this year's Camp please visit http://groups.drupal.org/node/332/drupalcamp . Thank you Eric.

As one of the organizers of the event, I feel it necessary to correct this publicly. What follows is what would have been sent out had the organizers been asked for input.

DrupalCamp NYC 5

It's time for the second NYC Drupal Camp of 2008. Our last Camp in March was a great success -- Due to popular demand, it seems that Drupal Camp has become a twice-a-year event here in NYC.

If you've attended past NYC Drupal Camps you know that it is a weekend long knowledge sharing and training unconference. Drupal Camps are for the novice user, developer or site administrator as well as the more experienced. All are welcome.

We have reached the limit of people that we can accommodate. You are welcome to sign up, but any people registering for the event after 4pm Saturday, August 23 should understand that they are on the waiting list. (We hope to work with the groups.drupal.org crew to make this more intuitive in the future)

To see what sessions will be presented and/or how you can help with this year's Camp please visit http://groups.drupal.org/node/332/drupalcamp . We're still looking for more sponsors as well.

The NYC Drupal Camp organizers would like to thank Hans, Andres, Chris and Marius from Polytech University in Brooklyn. Without the support and generous donation of space from Polytech University, this event would not be possible.

Proposed posting guidelines for the NYC Drupal Group.

To follow up on the poll about keeping posts on-topic:

The majority of folks that had an opinion want us to keep posts in this group on-topic and believe that we should pay attention to the signal-to-noise ratio of content in the group.

Below is my suggestion for posting guidelines to help people self-moderate what they post to the group.

This group exists to facilitate discussion about topics that directly relate to the New York City drupal community. We ask that posts stay on-topic, and relate to both drupal and New York City.

We make this request out of respect for the time of those that belong to the group and for the larger drupal community. The more content in this group/the more emails members get from this group that are not NYC related, the less they will pay attention to the group over time.

Beyond that there is an impact on the drupal community at large when we discuss generic hosting or module/drupal questions outside of the most appropriate forum. When people look for this sort of information in the future, they will look in the primary drupal.org forum or in the appropriate group, not here.

By posting content where it is on-topic we not only get to discuss issues and get answers, but we do a long-term service to the community at large.

As a general guideline:

If your post is a question about a general drupal topic, it belongs on the drupal.org forum not in the NYC group.

If your post is about a very specific detail of drupal, it belongs either in one of the special interest groups on groups.drupal.org or on the primary drupal.org forums, not in the NYC group.

If your post is about an event or issue of direct interest to the NYC community, and only peripherally about drupal, this is the place.

If your post is about drupal use by a group, company or project in NYC, this is the place for your post.

If you have cross-posted your content to more than a couple groups, it's probably not appropriate for the NYC group.

Before you post, ask yourself two questions:
1: does the topic explicitly relate to NYC (if yes move to q2)
2: does the topic at least peripherally relate to drupal

if the answer to both is yes. post!

Development sandboxes help reduce learning curve

After some contemplation and discussion with others, i realized just how important it is to offer temporary sandboxes for learning basic installation and development. the vision is to allow people to create their own sub domain website such as *.example.com and to be able to practice what ever they need on it.

I will list a few features that I personally think are great, and i would love everyone to contribute their ideas on how to make this even better.

1) if a user access [non-existing-sub-domain].example.com, they are presented with a signup form that asks the most basic information to enable creating a new sandbox

2) once the form is submitted, the user is emailed all the necessary information about the sandbox

3) the user should be able to do the following

a) have full control over his drupal site on that sub domain

b) user will be able to ssh or ftp into his own sandbox to upload files. however he is limited to his sub domain multi-site install folder which is /sites/[mysubdomain].example.com/

c) if ssh'd he should be able to access his mysql sandbox and have full control over it up to a point to prevent allowing to take over the full database :-p

d) the user should be able to download any module they want from drupal.org and install it on the sandbox to try them out, or theme them or what ever they want. that is the point of the sub domain sandbox.

e) The life span of the sandbox is variable. I don’t have a better suggestion on it's length other than 'it is variable' time frame.

f) and this one is important user has an option to expedite this but, once the life span of this sandbox runs out the application will archive itself and allow the user to download it to another machine to resume his work. this means that database dump is taken, and all the files from this sandbox are all archived an a single easy to download file which user has the liberty to take with him (email him the link for download) or just leave it be for deletion.

This is the overall idea that i had. I am sure this raises a lot of security issues, however i cannot answer them. That is why i would like everyone's input on this matter and how we can make this better.

This has countess number of applications to it. the easiest to spot is to allow people to create sandboxes to practice on, right at a meet up, or at drupalcamp. then take what they made home and practice some more on it. I’m in love with this idea, I hope you guys will too.

Hosting company came forth and offered to sponsor NYC DUG hosting needs

I've just spoke to David Veith from http://www.hostmysite.com/ (~10 mins before writing this post)

He expressed his interest in sponsoring NYC DUG hosting needs in return for some exposure and experience hosting and configuring drupal sites. Our group has needs for reliable hosting; we need to host our meetup and drupalcamp videos, pictures and other material that we produce. Which is ALOT of content already that we have nowhere to house.

To start us off he asked me to email him the basic configuration we would like to start with and he'll set us up.

So lets discuss what everyone thinks they would like to be able to do? Keep in mind that this will be group's hosting, so think what the group would need.

here is what i would like to do for the group:
1) Provide up to 6 months back worth of meetup Raw video footage (or more if need be)- Why would anyone need such a thing? well to be frank, i do not believe i have the time nor desire to edit a video file of some one else's presentation. while i enjoyed listening to it, i think i will only work on my own to present it in best light. because of my time and desire limitations, i offer everyone the raw files (along with how-to tutorials) to be able to edit the video files with their own (or some one else's) presentations/content. the power is in your hands.
2) Video streaming right from the site - yes, hostmysite wants to advertise their own solution as alternative to youtube or something, but that doesnt hurt us any, they get what they want and we get what we need.
3) user ssh and FTP accounts - due to the number of power users in our group (know what to do with servers etc etc) i would like everyone to have the power (if they so choose) to help out with the group, therefore giving them sandboxed access (so nothing can be broken) to the server will greatly increase the number of people that can help out with the group management.
4) our own mail server - as we grow (which we area already doing) the number of discussions also grows on our site. as it was pointed out already, this creates a lot of discussions that not everyone wants to take part of (or even know about). therefore having control over mail server gives us the power to customize mailing lists and mailing filters to sort which user gets which email. very granular control that everyone can enjoy. members can still get all the emails if they so choose.

Q: How will we use this hosting so it doesnt damage our existing group site?
A: we will upload all the content to our host, and link to it from the g.d.o/new-york-city discussion pages. I will speak to moshe weitzman to allow integration with more rich content so we can link to more content from the g.d.o site which is hosted on our server.

Well, this is just a draft. We can do way more with it than what i outlined. To be setup with the account i will need to send him the basic configuration that we would need to pull this off.
right now i can account for :
1) 180GB+ space : for the videos and other content we produce
2) 512MB ram : standard amount ? we probably will never reach that level but its better be safe than sorry
3) Mailing server: we dont blast too many emails so something basic would suffice.
4) Fat pipes (throughput and bandwidth limits): we will need large data transfer limit because of the videos that we will be hosting
5) LAMP stack : linux, apache2, mysql5, php5.2+ : standard stuff for this kind of server
6) configuration for sandboxed ssh and management accounts: must be sandboxed so people cant break other people's stuff.
7) .... ?
8) $$$$ ? (for those that dont get it. this is drupal humor. ignore it)

Okey guys. lets hear what you think. please contribute to what you think our configuration should be. I have never specced out a server so the above is purely a guess work. anyone with experience is strongly encouraged to step up.

Thank you all!

php for Drupal class recommendations

I have some programming background but would like to learn php enough to become a developer instead of just a dabbler. I've read a php book and of course read things online but would like a good class in order to go through the process of doing homework, etc. to really absorb it. Can anyone suggest the best places to learn in NYC? Does anyone teach php specifically for Drupal? Would anyone like to tutor me (for a fee, of course)? There might be other people who'd also like to learn and maybe we could create an ongoing class or something?

Thank you Charles Novick and Jonathan Berger for providing the designs. Thank you the group for picking the best one!

I will be distributing stickers at the upcoming Meetup, the rest will go to NYC DrupalCamp.

I've thrown in a few extra bucks to make it 1000 stickers instead of 500, so we have plenty to go around!

Drupal Hosting Needed

Need a fast, reliable drupal host for two sites. I'm currently using my Dreamhost account, but I'm not happy with the performance.

Looked around a bit, but the forums were full of unscrupulous people (sales people) with wild claims.

Need fast, reliable hosting with pretty good customer service. Cost is important, but not the deciding factor.

The first site, a non-profit theater, gets around 2,000+ visitors a day (and this will probably double or triple in the next year or so). The other site is an international information site and will attract thousands and thousands, but not at first.

You can either reply to this on contact me off-list at eric@ericsaul.net

Thanks!

Connecting with local PHP Developer community

It came to my attention that New York's PHP User Group is very big and rather active. I believe we should try to reach out to them and try to bring them over to our Drupal Group.

They have been established for much longer than NYC DUG and i believe we could benefit greatly from having them integreated with Drupal User Group as well as teach them to benefit from drupal.

I would like to hear ideas and discuss how we should approach this goal. After we come up with a plan, we would probably need a number of volunteers to visit PHP DUG meetup and give a talk on drupal and encourage them to come to our meetups and drupalcamps.

so how do you guys think we should proceed ?

Drupal Developer | Observer Media Group

Observer Media Group, the parent company of politicker.com and observer.com is seeking a programmer to join our dynamic team. Ideally, you have a solid grasp of PHP, Drupal, HTML, CSS, and Javascript. The soft skills we value most are flexibility and a willingness to learn; we're constantly multi-tasking, adapting tools to the task, and building projects with quick turnaround--we have to keep up with the news cycle! At the same time, we work on long term projects to improve our systems, add interactive features, and create new sites from the ground up.

Most of your work will be delivered on our Drupal sites, which rank among the most visited, but we like to use other languages and technologies occasionally too; some work can be done in whatever language you feel like trying. You'll work in our offices in on Broadway close to Union Square on a MacBook Pro, but you can occasionally telecommute if you'd like. We work as a team of peers and value motivation and curiosity over conformity. Our environment is casual and hassle-free, everyone in our office is a designer, developer, or producer.

Your talents are more important to us than your education. We offer competitive salaries, benefits, and an extremely easygoing atmosphere.

If this sounds interesting to you, please send along your resume and a code sample, preferably a Drupal module (if you're not experienced in Drupal, please send us some PHP which uses any other major framework). We do a bit of work in Python as well, so if you've written anything serious in Python, send that our way too. If you've contributed modules before, just point us to your project page. No recruiters or offshore firms, please.

Direct your inquiries to asmith@observer.com

PHP, Drupal, Web Developer Ninja | Disney Interactive Media Group

Web Developer Ninja Needed

We're looking for a smart, motivated, hands-on PHP and Drupal developer with a desire for world domination. You'd need multi-faceted web development skills, being able to tap dance across PHP, SQL, XHTML, CSS and javascript routines. You'll have experience with Drupal and/or ExpressionEngine. You'd probably think that in a pinch, you could code a new, better version of DIGG.com in a couple of weekends.

Ok, seriously now: We're growing really fast and need a gun developer who can really run with this baby. Since we are a growing company, there are many opportunities for growth.

You'll need to have a degree in a software related field, and have some serious experience (at least 4 years) in web development with PHP, from architecture to deployment.

Combining .info file with .module file

Hello, everyone.
I don't know whether this is relevant to you, and I'm sorry it this doesn't. :)

A question was popped up in my mind that rather creating a separate file for information regarding a module, can't we combine such information in the .module file with this information placed at the top of the .module file?

Drupal Camp 5 Sponsorship Information

Event Info | Sign Up | Location/Maps | Sponsorship Info | Sessions

Update Sept 5: Thanks to all those that came forward to sponsor the event. We now have enough to cover all basic expenses for the event.

Sponsorships for DrupalCamp can be as low as $100 and as high as you can afford. Things work best when a group, individual or company agree to take on the cost of a breakfast or lunch.

Ideally, sponsors pay the vendor directly, making it easier to account for the money. If a sponsor is unable to do so, paying by check at least a week before the event is fine.

By sponsoring this event you are helping to enable a community-centric skills and knowledge sharing event.

Events like this also help to strengthen the NYC Drupal community by fostering connections between developers as well as between developers and end-users.

Sponsorship of the event will get your logo on the main event page and displayed in the main room of the event. All sponsors will be publicly thanked the day of the event and at any meal you sponsor.

Sponsorship does not guarantee that the workshop you want to give will be scheduled and does not give you a timeslot to make presentation.

Here is the breakdown of expected expenses (Figures based on expenses of the last two drupal camps):

Total Goal is approx $1,500 - $3,000.00 (depending on if we print shirts and stickers)

We have $183.22 left from the last Drupal Camp.

must have:

<strike>Misc. cash expenses (delivery tips, pens, ice, bags, drinks, etc.) : 200</strike> covered by leftover funds and donation from Openflows Community Technology Lab; Other random expenses covered by sponsorship from Democracy In Action and Mayfirst/PeopleLink

<strike>Breakfast 1st day (bagels & drinks): 300</strike> Covered by sponsorship from The American Physical Society (aps.org)

<strike>Breakfast 2nd day: 250</strike> covered by sponsorship from Mansueto Ventures

<strike> Lunch 1st day: 450 </strike> covered by sponsorship from HostMySite.com

<strike>Lunch 2nd day: 350</strike> covered by sponsorship of Platypus Theory

<strike>name tags, signage: 15</strike> covered by left-over funds

would be nice, but only after above expenses are covered:

Shirts + Stickers: 1,500

there could also be an Open Bar/drinks (first night) but it is not included in the above figures. If you are interested in sponsoring some Free as in beerbelly fun, let us know.

If you are interested in sponsoring the event, please contact Eric

Drupal Multimedia Session Proposal for DrupalCamp NYC 5

Aaron Winborn, from Advomatic, will present an overview of the multimedia options for Drupal. In this session, we'll examine best practices for handling Images, Video, and Audio on your sites. We'll cover the modules best suited to specific tasks, with some hands-on examples and site recipes.

He has just completed writing Drupal Multimedia, scheduled to be published in September. (Read the announcement at Drupal.org.) He presented a similar topic at DrupalCampNYC in the spring of 2007, although geared towards images, before writing the precursor to Embedded Media Field at another collaborative session there, which he finished during OSCON later that Spring.

Images

Image or Image field?

Inline images

Scaling/cropping with Imagecache

More

Video

Local and external video

Media mover

Embedded Media Field

File Field and jQuery Media

More

Audio

Audio and File Field

Playlists

jQuery magic

More

Although he presented this session as part of a panel at DrupalCon Boston this spring, this time will be more focused on the current capabilities of Drupal 6 to handle multimedia (which is shaping up to be better than ever). He also attended a media code sprint in Portland, helping to create SimpleTests for the hook_file patch for multimedia handling in Drupal core.

Prerequisites:

An interest in Drupal and Multimedia. This is geared towards the beginner who wants to know what Drupal is capable of, and/or towards someone wanting to know which of the hundreds of media-handling modules is best for their needs.

Goals:

By the end of the session, we will have covered a broad overview of what's available for Drupal and Multimedia. Attendees will hopefully leave with an idea of the basic media module(s) to install.

Aaron Winborn
Drupal Multimedia (my book, coming in September!)
AaronWinborn.com (my blog, all about Drupal)
Advomatic (my work)

New York City

Event Info | Sign Up | Location/Maps | Sponsorship Info | Sessions

Important Update: registration is now closed. If you are signing up for the event after 4pm Saturday August 23 [Eastern Daylight Time, GMT -4], you will be considered on the waiting list. You will hear from us closer to the event to let you know if there is space for you

The group has voted, the space is reserved. All we need now is you (and some bagels and pizza -- see note below if you're interested in sponsoring the event).

NYC DrupalCamp 5 event will take place Saturday & Sunday, September 13th and 14th, 2008 at Polytechnic University.

NYC Drupal Camps are free events, but we do need some sponsors in order to make it happen. Please get in touch with Eric to discuss sponsoring the event. As we have done in the past, any funds left over after we cover the costs of the event will be either donated to the Drupal Association or held to cover expenses of the next camp.

Event details
When :: Saturday & Sunday, September 13th and 14th, 2008 10am-6pm
Where :: Polytechnic University Brooklyn Campus - Building A
Six Metrotech Center, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Directions

Subway Map

Sign Up / Register (its free)
If you're interested in attending, click the button at the bottom of this page.

In order to register for the event, you have to have a groups.drupal.org account. This is an experiment based on feedback from past camps. We hope that new users will find having to register an account in order to sign up less alienating than having to edit a wiki page.

WHAT IS DRUPAL CAMP?!?
Modeled in the camp unconference structure, drupalcamp is a no-holds-bars discussion, workshop/code-a-thon involving the Free Software content management system Drupal. At drupalcamp you ask the questions and the experts provide the answers; at drupalcamp you discover your solutions to your most pressing problems. Like previous drupalcamps, there will be a number of break out rooms...

Sessions / Schedule
DrupalCamp NYC 5 Sessions Wiki

Event Info | Sign Up | Location/Maps | Sponsorship Info | Sessions

Want to lead a session? Have topic to discuss? Questions? Sign-in and edit this wiki page to *propose* a session.

At the camp we will set the schedule for the day

Saturday Septemer 13th

Name of Session

Reference Link(s)

Presenter(s)

Summary

Intro to Drupal: Total Immersion

--

Peter Dowling (winstond), Sam Tresler (I got your back!)others??

4-6 hr introduction to Drupal, this session will give people new to Drupal an in-depth introduction to Drupal. Be on time. Current plan is first hour devoted to helping all to get a web server environment loaded on their PC, second hour is overview of what Drupal is, after that is hands on how to install/configure/create a Drupal site. Check back here a couple of days before the event for suggestions on how you can prepare for this session. (check out the discussion/plan for this session at http://groups.drupal.org/node/14569)

What is Free Software?

--

Eric Goldhagen

this will be a discussion of the history of Open Source/Free Software and how it relates to drupal and the drupal community

Drupal Multimedia

--

Aaron Winborn

This session will be an overview of the best practices and modules for incorporating multimedia into your Drupal site, including Images, Video, and Audio. The session will be similar to the panel presented at Boston Drupalcon 2008, although geared to Drupal 6.

Integrating Drupal with advocacy software

--

Charles Lenchner

Need to integrate a CRM or advocacy tool with your Drupal site? Explore the why, when and how. (I know Salsa; would welcome Civicrm, Convio, other users to share in the fun!)

Automated Testing in Drupal

--

Charlie Gordon

Drupal has its own automated testing framework! This session will both help developers learn how to write tests for their code, as well as help site administrators learn to create tests for their specific sites' configurations.

jQuery an intro to modules and themes level implementation

--

Nat Meysenburg

jQuery is the only piece of non-Drupal software distributed as part of core. There are many plugins available for jQuery that implement really interesting AJAX features for any site. This session will cover a (very) simple explanation of how jQuery works, a look at some modules that implement jQuery in Drupal, and how to add your own jQuery at the theme level.

The CCK Widget

--

Geoff Maxey

The CCK Widget is a powerful element of the CCK. This session would cover how a developer could implement a module that can utilize this powerful tool and create more versatile custom data fields and forms for the content within their site. This session would be friendly to those beginning to develop modules for Drupal w/ PHP/MySQL as well as to those whom are already experienced w/ module development for Drupal.

Open Media Project

OMP

OpenFlows??

Update on the progress on collaboration on the OMP and movement toward a unified Public Access TV DB structure in Drupal

Intro to Multisite

--

ixlr8

Creating and maintaining multiple websites with a single code base.

Drupal Scalability

--

ixlr8

What to do when your website outgrows itself. We will talk about load balancing, db server clustering, memcache, etc.

Using FeedAPI & the FeedAPI Element Mapper to make cool/kickass mashups

--

Alex Urevick-Ackelsberg

The combination of FeedAPI and the FeedAPI Element Mapper offers site builders a powerful tool for pulling in all sorts of data from third party sites. I'll show a couple of examples of how to use these two modules, creating an aggregated video site (similar to our Drupal Video Planet and a site that uses ical feeds to create an aggregated calendar.

  Semantic Web support in Drupal

SWNYC

Marco Neumann

Use of RDF, SPARQL, Triple Stores etc in Drupal exploration

  --

--

--

--

Sunday Septemer 14th

Sunday will consist mainly of code sprints (where developers work together to solve problems, create new code, test patches for existing drupal bugs, etc).
There has also been requests for a sort of supervised study hall, where people and groups that have their own drupal run project can get together and work on their sites while being able to get the advice and assistance of experts

type of session (sprint or workgroup)

Name of Organization or part of drupal that will be the focus

Summary and details/goals of session

  --

--

--

BoF - Sam Tresler

Teaching Drupal & Drupal's requirements (php, mysql, unholy ceremonies)

See http://groups.drupal.org/node/14181

BoF

Led by Jay Datema, this will be a discussion of Drupal use in Libraries

Q and A

Acquia

Questions and Answers about the relationship between Acquia and Drupal, in the hot seat will be Kieran Lal

Workgroup

Radical Reference

cobbled together over the past 4 years, the Radical Reference site has suffered loss of data due to unmaintained modules, lived through the pain of 3 drupal upgrades (currently running 5.x), and in general is in need of refactoring. So, using the current site as a prototype, we will rebuild, refine and redesign. Any librarians, theme experts, designers or techies interested in helping, giving ideas or answering questions would be appreciated.

Here's some ideas for session from a previous post. Many of these topics still need presenters....

    * Video?
* Tools and Editors
* Documenation?
* SimpleTest (Charlie)
* Key Modules: CCK and Views, etc, and how to use them - ixlr8 - CCK and Views- Creating Dynamic Lists of Dynamic Content
* Migration from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6
* Intro to theming (tom_o_t - though I could also do advanced if necessary)
* Advanced theming
* 15 different ways to do something
* Workflow?
* More Drupal Awesomeness++ Biggie Size Edition
* How to make a Drupal start-up
* Open source and the Drupal community: What is open source? Eat our own dog food (I'm always up for discussing the history of and details of Free software, etc -- Eric)
* Advanced Views (Insert Views, etc)
* Drupal teams go head to head to build the best project for charity organizations. Winners get prizes?
* Build a Flickr clone
* Build a YouTube clone
* jQuery Crash Course!!!!!!
* Drupal in non-profits/politics - CiviCRM (If no one with more experience with it volunteers, I'll give it a shot MacRonin aka Paul - Or maybe merge with the "advocacy software" session in the top section)

Intro Session at DrupalCamp

At the last DrupalCamp in the spring with the help of a few others, I did an intro to Drupal session, which people really seemed to value, and I'd love to do this again.

One change that's been suggested is to do a separate session first, probably for an hour or 1 1/2 hrs, to help people set up a development environment on their own laptop using Xampp for Windows or MAMP for Macs. This took a long time last time round, and some people already had it, or didn't want to do it - they were happy just watching.

So - first request: I'd love to have some help from perhaps two people who are confident in setting up MAMP, and ideally someone who knows how to do the equivalent on Linux.

Then the second and main part of the intro session would be much the same as last time - how to install drupal, basic configuration, creating content, managing users, and then how to install and use a few of the main contrib modules - CCK and Views.

I'd love to have suggestions on key things to include and any other improvements on last time's session.

The other difference is that we have all the rooms available both days, so the Intro Session will probably run on the Sunday alongside the hackathon/code sprints/etc. The intro session takes most of the day, and I wouldn't want to take away the space from the normal DrupalCamp sessions on Saturday (and also I want to go to as many of those as possible!) Does anyone feel that this is a really bad idea?

Second request: I'd love to have a few people to help out with this intro session - there's always people having problems with different steps, and Robbie and Peter and others were a huge help last time. You wouldn't need to help the whole day - even a few hours would be wonderful.

Cheers!

Thomas

NYC DrupalCamp 5, here or barcamp wiki?

Before the last drupal camp, we discussed using our drupal group for the next one, which now is around the corner.

Unless there are objections to moving away from the barcamp wiki to groups.drupal.org, I will upload some content in the next day or two and get things moving.

History of the community/how we got here...

In order to inform the debates happening on other threads, I'm posting my version of the history of this group. I'm doing so in the hope that it will help people understand how we got to where we are, and help people think about where we should go from here.

history of the NYC Drupal group:

The NYC Drupal group has its roots in the first two DrupalCamps, organized primarily (if I remember right) by NoNeckNoel.

After the second drupalcamp, the meetups were started by Jacob, and held at MNN.

Based on discussion in those meetings, it was decided that the NYC Drupal community should be organized and coordinated publicly via a group on groups.drupal.org. The goal was to ensure that anyone could have a voice and to keep a high level of transparency in how things were done.

Then came Drupal Camp 3, mainly organized by Jacob

Jacob was leaving town -- moving to China -- and he realized that it would be better to have someone local run the g.d.o site. The role of site manager was always thought of as a burden, not as a position of leadership.

There was some confusion afterwards about the difference between facilitating community and being in authority/leadership role. But we all made it through the debate without anyone feeling the need to splinter the group and as a result the group continued to grow.

The responsibility of the nyc g.d.o group passed to Marketanomoly/adam and he did an amazing job of keeping the posts on-topic, experimenting with new features of the g.d.o site, communicating with other local organizers and the g.d.o maintainers to make g.d.o a better resource for everyone. He also did a great job on meetups.

Even if I stopped attending the meetups because they had moved to a corporate location requiring pre-registration and security, I continued to feel a part of the group as a whole.

Drupal Camp 4
There was a debate about moving drupal camp organizing to a separate site. The primary person advocating for the new site seemed to think that Jacob had put him into a position of authority (a position that did not exist). This led to some heated debate. When the group made it clear that there was consensus for keeping the organizing within community controlled infrastructure, the primary advocate of a new site stepped away from organizing the camp, so Adam, Sam and I took on the task.

Adam was too overloaded with work and his life (new baby!) so he went looking for someone to take over running the group and organizing the meetups. He took his responsibility to the group very seriously and made sure things would continue. This is how meetup coordination and management of g.d.o site moved to oleg/litwol.

As others have pointed out, Oleg has done a commendable job keeping the meetups happening. But, being that he is very new to New York City and the community, I think he has made some mistakes -- out of totally good intentions not malice.

Management of the site was never meant to imply leadership. The role of site manager requires someone have the time to deal with spam; the time to keep the posts organized; the motivation to work with the g.d.o crew to improve the functionality of the site for the benefit of our group and all others.

This group has a few different facets that should remain separate, not be consolidated under one board or group that acts without communicating with others.

There are the meetups; there are the drupal camps; there are more social meetings that some have asked for; these all overlap into what is the larger community that exists as members of the nyc drupal group.

It is not hard to post ideas to the group, get feedback and then act. I'd like to see someone give a detailed list of what is not served by the current methodology.

Thanks for reading, and let's have this debate so we can all move on and get back to sharing knowledge.
