Austin Drupal module development

Hi all,

I'm looking for a seasoned Drupal development person (or team) who can help with some non-trivial module development and integration into my Drupal site. Prefer Austin-area folks since that's where I'm located (for the face to face interaction).

Please drop me a line if you're that person/team, or to make a referral. Let me know what module(s) you've developed previously, examples of Drupal sites you have done, etc.

Email: matt@door64.com.

Thanks!

When is the next meeting?

Hello,

I have only been a member of this group for about a week. So I apologize if I missed my answer somewhere on this site.

When is the next meeting? I would like to get together with other drupal beginners and experts to discuss setting up a drupal site. Being new to drupal, I installed 5.7 and have been playing around with the basic core features. But where to go from there is the question. Also there are parts of drupal I don't really understand - taxonomy, cck, views, setting up the administrative side of things. Did I say I was new to drupal? :)

Anyway, let me know if anyone is interested in getting together to discuss how to set up a drupal site.

I am also a lessons person. I enjoy taking lessons and classes when I am learning something new. If that would be of interest to others as well.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

How do you do mailing list?

Hey Y'all,
I have been working with drupal off and on for a while now... I have a really (what I think will be ) simple question- but I have not really found a good answer to it...

I am looking for a way to use drupal to replace yahoogroups. What I need to be able to do:
1. is have users start threads via email
2. have the threads stored, just like our Organic Group here is doing
3. be able to alter the emails slightly (putting them into a template)

OG does everything except for #1. OG2List looks like it might do this, but the module developer says that it is not ready for Internet strength just yet... I am wondering... as this seems so fundamental... anyone done something different that they have reproduced mailing list integrated with Drupal?

It seems that MailMan (python based) would be good, but a quick search at the modules looks like this has not been recently updated.

Any ideas, especially ones that you have seen scale?

Thanks,
Kevin

UPDATE: Website Redeployment Consultant | Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented

The Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented (TAGT) is a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit which provides professional training, advocacy, and membership-based services for educators and parents of gifted and talented children. We are looking for someone to assist us in stripping our website out of a proprietary CMS and reproducing it with Drupal themes. Our Austin office is located on the IH-35 access road between Riverside and Oltorf (south).

Our site is fairly large, but with a simple page layout template - subpages are simply chunks of HTML (often html tables) with a subpage ID. We're not looking for new visual/structural design (yet), so this should be a fairly quick project for an experienced drupal user.

Here's the site: www.txgifted.org

Our contract ends in June, so we need to get started soon. I'm hoping a fairly advanced user will help me (noob) reach a level of competence at which I can start applying more advanced Drupal concepts and features in the future.

Telecommuting would be allowable on condition of regular communication and a minimum office hours weekly for staff training and teamwork.

Update: Thanks to everyone who responded so quickly to my initial query. Because we need to move forward quickly, and we don't have time to discuss this in-depth with everyone who would be available to do this project, I'm posting a formal request for proposals. We hope to have a decision made quickly, so please respond ASAP.

Interested in a Beijing adventure? | MediSpecialty.com / OBGYN.net

Looking for a adventurous unique individual to work a 6 month contract leading a small team of developers in Beijing China in our permanent China office beginning this September after the 2008 Olympics. Being from the Austin area is desirable, where our headquarters is located to facilitate communications plus we all know the Austin developers are the best! Or, if you are located in Beijing now with significant Drupal experience we have an excellent opportunity for your consideration.

Our objective is to completely revise the existing websites including www.obgyn.net and www.china-obgyn.net as a highly automated health2.0 platform for the worldwide community of obstetricians, gynecologists and other women health providers. We wish to transition from primarily ourselves as the publisher to the community itself as its own publisher. Includes rich media uploads such as surgical video, synchronized powerpoint with audio, medical images, jobs, press releases, collaboration technologies, virtual vendor booths, annotated journal reviews, worldwide calendar, and so forth. The platform will be initially offered in Chinese and English followed by other translations. Additional medical specialties will be developed by ourselves or others starting in 2009.

We are a small self-funded company so some flexibility in compensation will be required. Other compensation benefits may be provided. Once the 6 month period is complete this job could continue on a parttime or telecommute basis.

For more information contact Bruce Speyer by email bruce.speyer@medispecialty.com or call +1 512 632 3455 to discuss.

Austin Meetup on Sat, 3/29/08, 2-5 pm @ St. Edward's University. Topics: various.

What

It's time for another Austin Drupal Users Group Meetup! Among other things, we'll recap the Boston DrupalCon and Austin's very own SXSW Interactive. If you have a topic you'd like to present, please add a comment below as to what it is and how much time you'd like to present. We welcome all Drupal-related topics because we are, after all, volunteer-driven!

When

Saturday, March 29th, 2-5 pm.

Where

St. Edward's University, Moody Hall, Room 309.

PLEASE NOTE: If you're not already familiar with the St. Edward's campus, it is suggested you print a copy of the PDF map. Matt V. checked with campus police and was told parking is open on the weekends, with the exception of handicap and residence hall spots.

A special "Thanks!" to Matt V. and Cousett for setting this up at St. Edward's.

Why

The Austin DUG wants YOUR participation and your fellow Drupalers want to meet you, make new friends/professional contacts, and learn about how you're using Drupal.

Signing up is courteous and helps in planning purposes by letting both the host and the venue know how many folks will be attending.

US patent reform and open source: Who is the best candidate for the OS community?

My friend whurley has launched an online poll to bring open source to the attention of politicians -- specifically, the presidential candidates. He, like many of us, is troubled by the recent calls for patent reform put forth by larger companies that may wind up blocking innovation and threatening open source-oriented companies and contractors.

You can view the poll here and vote for which candidate you believe is best for the open source community. (Don't worry: "None of them" is an option!)

Assume for a moment that a knowledge of open source is prerequisite (or integral) in solving issues like patent reform. Who would you vote for? In other words, who would be the best candidate for the open source community?

The more people who vote, the more of an impact this question can make.

Adding/Removing Yourself as an Event "Attendee"

Edit 2/10/08. DISREGARD THIS POST.

The signup.module has been implemented on this site.

Moshe recently added a New Attendees tab on event nodes here on g.d.o. If you go to an Event page such as the Austin Meetup on Sat, 2/09/08 and run your mouse over the i am not attending link at the bottom of the event description, it should tell you the following:

Mark me as "attending" for this event

It's basically a toggle switch so if you ARE attending, you can go ahead and click it and it will add your name to the list at the "Attendees" tab at the top of the respective event page and the toggle switch for you will change to i am attending.

If you later change your mind and decide you will NOT be attending after having previously signed up as an "Attendee", then run your mouse over the i am attending link on the respective event page and it should tell you the following:

Mark me as "not" attending for this event

Again, it's basically a toggle switch so if you decide later on to NOT attend after having signed up, go ahead and click it and it will remove your name from the "Attendees" tab at the top of the respective event page. (The "toggle" wording/functionality is a bit confusing so I'm hoping it gets improved a bit.)

Of course, if you have a comment to make, then by all means go ahead and add yourself to the list of "Attendees" and then make your comment...or make your comment and then add yourself to the list.

In the end, you should be able to click on the "Attendees" tab and see everyone that plans to attend. Nifty, eh?

"Lightning Talks" for Austin Drupal February meetup?

Hey folks,

I'm only throwing this out as an option since I haven't seen any other ideas for February. If you have an alternative idea, let's hear it!

In the meantime and for our February meetup, what do you think about doing something similar to the Boston's group's Lightning Talks?

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to present for 5 minutes on a topic of their choosing. You may show off your Drupal site, ask some questions of the audience, give a module demonstration, share some marketing ideas for Drupal, and so on. Just keep it brief. No expertise required - just do it.

If we get some positive responses, can someone please volunteer to host the event? And if you volunteer to host, you get to choose the date! Tuesdays and Wednesdays 7-9 pm seem to work best.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Walt

Advantages/disadvantages of using "Content types" vs. using "Taxonomy"

Hey everyone!

Thanks again to Matt V., Jonathon, and Sam for their wonderful presentations last night and for the excellent hosting!

Also, I'm trying to recollect some of the comments made last night. If I heard correctly, Matt primarily used "Views" and "Taxonomy" for his presentation; specifically, he used "Taxonomy" (mysite.com/admin/content/taxonomy) to classify content into categories and subcategories. Jonathon, on the other hand, primarily used "Content types" (mysite.com/admin/content/types) in lieu of "Taxonomy" to classify content. Is that correct?

If correct, could someone please elaborate on what was mentioned at the meeting? Jonathon made a comment or two on using "Content types" over "Taxonomy" which I've since forgotten. I didn't take notes and I'm trying to understand the advantages/disadvantages of using Jonathon's method vs. using "Taxonomy". I think my brain was on dial-up speed last night! LOL.

Thanks!
Walt

what have you built with drupal lately?

It's been a while since I've made it out to an Austin Drupal Users Group meet-up, so I thought I'd just start a thread of sharing what we have all done locally lately..

Some sites that involve elements I'm particularly fond/proud of are below:

http://luigispatioristorante.com/
unique: my theme and Flashgallery + third party Simpleviewer for slideshows based on image gallery

http://bchc.co.brazos.tx.us/
unique: my theme and gmap module (plus themed infoWindows and thickbox jquery plugin)

http://brazosvotes.org/
unique: my first theme and i18n internationalization for mirrored english/spanish content managed by editors

Please feel free to comment on/critique my work and share yours as well. I hope to make it down to a drupal meeting again soon.

Austin Drupal Group January 16 Meetup

Hello Austin Drupalers,

After the success of the last November meetup (http://groups.drupal.org/node/7101), studley181 (Jonathon) and I will be hosting the next Austin Drupal Groups Meetup on January 16, 7pm, at the Austin Optaros Office (801 Congress Ave, above the Chipotle.) As before, parking can be found either in metered spaces downtown or at the St. David's parking garage. Studley181 and I will be meeting attendants in front of the building just before 7pm, and afterwards the doors will be locked. If you arrive a little late and the doors are locked, call me at 2814673082 and I'll run down to let you in.

Studley181 put up a poll earlier (http://groups.drupal.org/node/7394) concerning topics to be discussed at the next meetup and there was a good discussion of topics people would like to see and formats for the next meetup. This time we plan to discuss the CCK and Views modules, which fellow Austin Drupaler Matt V. has graciously volunteered to present. Jonathon will then present an advanced theming-related topic, and afterwards those who are interested in Drupal development are welcome to stay longer for a discussion of Drupal development issues, including the upcoming Drupal 6 release and what it means for developers. This meetup should be a great opportunity for the Austin Drupal community to meet up and discuss Drupal issues, and share knowledge that will benefit everyone. If you have ideas for topics you would like to discuss, the format of the meetup, or any other specific questions about the event, feel free to ask in the comments or contact me or studley181 directly.

Thanks,
Sam

By the way, please let me know in the comments if you plan on attending. I'd like to have a rough count of how many people are showing up.

How do I format results from form Api?

I just built my first module today. It is inanely simple, but it works. I created two fields that the user fills in, and using the values from those fields I made it do a simple calculation. Now I'm trying to figure out how to take the results from those calculations and control the output a bit more. The only way that I have found to print the results from a form in drupal is with drupal_print_message. This works for single result equations, but later I need to be able to end up with multiple results and do more advanced formatting with tables or unordered list. I have seen this done in regular php through for loops, but I don't really understand how to go from the submit function and pass the results on to a another function that will calculate and format the results. Can anyone give me any pointers?

I based my module on the module demo on page 154 of "Pro Drupal Development."

Help With Local church Conversion to Drupal

Heya gang!

So Calvaryaustin.org is going to be moving off of CMS made easy. not including their fron page the entire site is in flash and iframes.
It was really done poorly. I have been tasked with migrating to Drupal! I am so new to drupal and really could use some help.

For instance the front page is pade up of a header main body and three unique graphics that change out.

Not sure how I would template this correctly in drupal.
If you have a suggestion take a look at www.calvaryaustin.org and give me some advice.

I would also like to get the group involved in this and use this as a Austin Group project. Might be fun.

Let me know what you think sbout the idea, I can create a dev server that we all can access for developing this. It might be a way for some of us "including me" to learn much and get to know some of you better.

Hope to hear from you guys soon!

-J

Austin Drupal Users Group. Do you want to receive an email each time a message is posted to this group?

Do you want to receive an email each time a message is posted to this group? This will allow you to know right away when an event for the Austin group is being planned and, more importantly, the actual details once the host/coordinator has firmed up the plans.

If you aren't already subscribed via email to the threads on the Austin group, here's how you do it.

First, surf on over to the Austin group at http://groups.drupal.org/austin. Next, under the block heading of "Austin" in the top right hand corner, click on "My subscription". Finally, under "Email notification:", click on "Enabled", and then click "Submit". You will now start receiving an email each time a message is posted to this group!

Regards,
Walt

Austin Drupal Group November Meetup

Hi,
Drupal Groups member "studley" and I are hosting the next Austin Drupal Groups Meetup on Nov. 28, 7pm, at the Austin Optaros Office (8th and Congress, above the Chipotle.)

We plan to discuss custom theming, custom module development, and facilitate general Drupal discussion. This should be a great opportunity for the Austin Drupal community to meet up and discuss Drupal issues, and share knowledge that will benefit everyone. If you have ideas for topics you would like to discuss, or any specific questions about the event, feel free to ask in the comments or email me.

Thanks,
Sam

By the way, please let me know if you plan on attending. I'd like to have a rough count of how many people are showing up.

Announcing the "SEO" Checklist Module

I am pleased to announce the release of the Drupal "SEO" Checklist Module.

The "SEO" Checklist Module provides a list of good Search Engine Optimization actions that you should take to maximize the presence of your website in the major search engines. It provides little functionality itself but rather it helps you keep track of what needs to be done.

**Benefits:

Search Engines Drive 90% of the traffic on the web. The more "findable" you are, the easier it is for you to get customers. This module helps you with on-page SEO - a necessary component of a good online marketing campaign.

Listen to the announcement Podcast.

SEO

I was sorry to be out of town and miss the first meeting since I joined the group, particularly as I really would have liked to learn more about Search Engine Optimization On that theme, I have a question now I am wondering whether you covered or whether anyone has any insight into. I tried asking on the Drupal forum but no one responded. Perhaps, since SEO is in focus here at Drupal Austin, some people will find it interesting to address this question.

What is better for blog SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Drupal or Wordpress? I AM NOT ASKING about the relative merits of each in terms of blog usability, flexibility, etc, which I know is addressed elsewhere (i.e. I know Wordpress is easier for beginners if you just want a basic blog. . . and Drupal allows a lot more flexibility for different kinds of content and expandability). I am trying to make the best choice for a blog with SEO front in mind.

Please assume for this discussion that the Wordpress modules and codes are being used so that robots will not follow links to duplicate pages (i.e. the same page listed with a url in archives, in categories, in rss feeds). I understand this to be the main difference between Drupal and Wordpress for SEO. Drupal taxonomy allows for more flexible category views and thus less duplication (correct?). So, if this issue is removed for Wordpress, do the two systems work equally well for SEO (again, specifically for BLOGS only).? Is there anything else that makes one significantly better than the other? Hw much differencee is there likely to be?

Goals for Austin Group. Also, volunteers needed to coordinate and help set up future meetups.

I learned a lot at the Tuesday meeting. Thanks for starting this group.

After the meeting, it occurred to me that the group might benefit from a group development meeting sometime. Or perhaps, a forum exploring how can we helped each other more.

For example, the non-pros can probably help the pros by being part of their sales force. Many of my friends know that I know more about websites than they do. Sometimes they ask me for help setting up a site, and sometimes I am in a position to refer my friend/colleague to a pro-web developer. ...but which pros have which expertise? ...besides Ben, I know what he knows. The pros can help the non-pros with their expertise...but what would our group of non-pros find most helpful?

And of course it might be worthwhile to explore how the pros could help each other.

Anyway, that's my input.

Tanya Tussing

Formatting issue using Bare Bones by 4kitch

I am posting this here in hopes that someone else has worked with Todd's BareBones theme and can provide some insight into my issue.. I've got a background-image on the footer that looks fine in FF, but the footer itself is shifted left ~24px (or a couple em's?) in IE6. I think it works fine in IE7 but haven't yet tested there.

The site underway:
dev.luigispatioristorante.com
(preferred not to be linked.. keeps the crawlers away)

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Apress Letter to the Austin Drupal Users Group and 25% Off ALL Apress books

I'm passing this along because I think it's helpful to the Drupal community and I believe all Drupal groups could benefit from it. A while back, I came across get copies of books to share as provided by greggles (thanks Greg Knaddison!) and decided to sign up the Austin Drupal Users Group with Apress as an "Apress User Group".

This week, I received a letter from Apress asking me to "remind your members of their exclusive Apress User Group Program discount of 25% off ALL Apress books!" I scanned the letter which you can view in the attached PDF file. In addition, I've attached Apress' free chapter on theming, Chapter 8, "The Theme System", as a PDF file. You should see it below under "File attachments". It's 875 KB and you'll need Adobe Acrobat to read it.

Read on for more info.

Regards,
Walt Esquivel, MBA; MA; President, Wellness Corps; Captain, USMC (Veteran)
$50 Hosting Discount Helps Projects Needing Financing

I was provided a few "Open Source and Web Development Roadmap" booklets which list dozens of books on open source, e.g. Ajax, Apache, CSS, HTML, JavaScript, Linux, MySQL, PHP, etc. Apress is "always looking for people interested in checking out and reviewing" their new titles. Suggestions for Writing Apress Book Reviews

If you would like to review any titles for your user group, I suggest your Drupal Users Group leader fill out the Apress User Group Program application. Apress writes, "To prevent duplicate registrations, we request that only user group leaders--not members--register their groups." Once your group leader fills out the application, he or she can then contact Cheryl Martinez as listed on the attachment to review new titles. Although I didn't scan the Roadmap, you can get a pretty good idea of it by visiting the Apress roadmaps online at their web site.

If your Drupal Users Group isn't already a registered Apress User Group, you might want to consider joining which would allow your members 25% off their books, not to mention probably a few free ones as long as you agree to review their books and post your thoughts online as mentioned in get copies of books to share.

Austin Meetup on Tue, 10/2/07, 7-9 pm @ SpryDev. Topic: Main topic will be Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Who

Calling all Central Texas Drupalers! Meetups are very informal and Drupal users of all levels - new users to expert users - are encouraged to attend and participate. Be sure to introduce yourself to the group.

What

It's time for another Austin Drupal Users Group Meetup! Thanks to Ben and SpryDev for providing us a place to meet. Ben will discuss SEO, a topic most of us will most definitely benefit from. Also, our meetups provide an opportunity, time permitting, for folks to volunteer and showcase their Drupal-powered web sites. So if you'd like to spend 10-15 minutes walking us through your web site, meetups are a good opportunity for you to do so. A benefit from showcasing your web site is that you'll probably receive some helpful advice and constructive criticism along with questions that might help you see things in a new way.

When

Tuesday, October 2nd. 7-9 pm.

Where

SpryDev. For directions, please visit http://www.sprydev.com/directions.

Why

The Austin DUG wants YOUR participation and your fellow Drupalers want to meet you, make new friends/professional contacts, and learn about how you're using Drupal.

A very warm "Thank you!" goes out to Four Kitchen Studios for allowing us to meet at their new offices. David has provided us directions and mentioned you should "Feel free to bring food, drink, and laptops."

Why

The Austin DUG wants YOUR participation and your fellow Drupalers want to meet you, make new friends/professional contacts, and learn about how you're using Drupal.

By the way, we had a good turnout for our 8/14/07 meetup at Scholz Garten and I received several positive comments from some of the new folks that they were pleased with the atmosphere and that they learned a few new things - which I think is awesome! I love to hear that folks found attending a Drupal meetup worthwhile and informative. Also, Jim and Marla showed off a new site their company is rolling out later this year, and it's looking great! (I would have put their company name here but don't know if they want it publicized to the world just yet.)

Presentation to 501 Tech Club

I'm going to do a presentation to the 501 Tech Club next week (Monday, July 16) on Drupal. The 501 Tech Club is a social/networking organization for tech people at non-profit (so-called 501(c)) organizations. This will be a completely introductory (non-developer) presentation. I think what I'm going to do is start with a laptop and the Drupal 5.1 tarball and show them how, in about half an hour, I can setup a complete community site with Drupal.

If you know anybody who might be interested in seeing Drupal work, feel free to pass along the info.

More info here: http://groups.nten.org/group.htm?mode=gvb&igid=6493&op=ViewArticle&artic...

Austin Meetup on Tue, 8/14/07, 7-9 pm @ Scholz Garten (just south of UT campus)

Who

Calling all Central Texas Drupalers! Meetups are very informal and Drupal users of all levels - new users to expert users - are encouraged to attend and participate. Be sure to introduce yourself to the group.

What

Austin Drupal Users Group Meetup! For our next meetup, folks expressed a desire for more of a social get-together where we can not only talk about Drupal but also have a cold drink and perhaps grab a bite to eat.

When

Tuesday, August 14th. 7-9 pm.

[I'm hoping it's OK with the majority of folks (hey, can't please everyone :) ) if we meet on the 2nd Tue in Aug (8/14) instead of the 1st Tue. The 1st Tue (8/7) is National Night Out. Basically, it's a neighborhood meetup with police, fire, and EMS as invited guests. I serve on my neighborhood association's board of directors so I'm already committed the night of 8/7.]

Where

Scholz Garten
1607 San Jacinto Street
Austin, TX
474-1958

Scholz Garten is 3 blocks south of the main UT campus and I already called them and gave them a tentative party of 15. They told me they have wifi...and plenty of seating...and plenty of cold drinks...and plenty of good food...and site of the first ever UT football victory party...

Why

The Austin DUG wants YOUR participation and your fellow Drupalers want to meet you, make new friends/professional contacts, and learn about how you're using Drupal.

Unofficial Nirvana release INSIDE

I've packaged and uploaded the three themes we discussed at recent meetings (Nirvana, Nirvana Skeleton, and Barebones): files.fourkitchens.com/drupal.

IMPORTANT: These are unofficial, marginally untested, alpha releases! Official versions of the themes will be uploaded to Drupal's CVS when we're completely happy with them. Your mileage may vary!

Exploring Drupal and Video for Workshop

I'm interested in working with others to explore Drupal and Video with a goal of developing a meet-up presentation on this topic.

I don't want to define it too much here, because I'd rather this be a collaborative effort. For now, I'm curious of the registered users in this group, who among us are interested in video.

The modules listed below are in some way useful for video. I've not used or tested any of them. This is what I'm interested in doing as well as finding others here who may have experience already.

We could do a presentation on this at Public Access Community Television.

Please let me know if this interests you.

Austin Drupal Users Group - Individual Introductions!

Hey Austin!

If you want to give a shout out as to what you do and how you're working with Drupal, that would be great!

During our meetups, we really don't have time for attendees to share detailed intros with the group. We tried intros at one of our meetups and, in the process, consumed over an hour when we could have been learning or teaching others about Drupal.

As a result, intros at future meetups will be great if they're no more than 10 seconds long each to provide basics such as your name, your organization, and what you're doing/hoping to do with Drupal, e.g. "Hi, I'm Walt Esquivel, I'm with Wellness Corps, and I'm using Drupal to help me establish a wellness presence primarily through Organic Groups." For everything else intro-related that you want to share with the Austin DUG, please do it online. This page is the place for you to do it! :)

So, feel free to provide whatever you'd like here on this Austin intro list. Here are some ideas:
- Name
- Organization (company, school, non-profit, government, etc.) you're with & what you do there for a living
- Link(s) to your Drupal website(s) (personal and/or organizational website(s))
- What you hope to accomplish with Drupal
- General background
- Education
- Hobbies
- Etc.

I'll take the lead by saying my name is Walt and I've started a company called Wellness Corps. I'm the founder and president of my one-man company so I do everything from installing Drupal modules to taking out the trash. :) With Drupal, my goal is to establish wellness-related groups all across our wonderful planet! :)

I like working with Drupal because it's easy to set up and provides so many contributed modules for customized functionality. My company's website is bare-bones at the moment as I just uploaded a few modules after trying them out on my test website. Come back in a week or two and it will be much more presentable.

My previous experience includes marketing, sales, consulting, and logistics, among others. I have an MBA in marketing/information mgt and an MA in human resources. I served in the Marine Corps as an officer for 8 years and there's more info about me than you ever want to know on my LinkedIn page. (Speaking of LinkedIn, please connect to me via LinkedIn so we can stay in touch.)

I see myself as helping others by setting up Drupal meetups to assist in the training and support of Drupal users/learners. How about you? How do you expect to give back to the Drupal community? Whatever it is, thanks in advance!

Editable Notes from the 6/19 Meetup

Can someone please post what modules are being used to create this wiki type page? (Selwyn 10-3-07)

These notes were originally part of this article. I moved them to this wiki page so that others could contribute comments and corrections.

General Order of Setup

These are the things generally done (in order) to configure a Drupal site after initial installation.

Site Configuration > Clean URLs

Site Configuration > Site Information

Site Configuration > Date and Time (set time zone)

Site Configuration > File system (defaults may be ok)

setup cron

Poormanscron is an alternative if you don't have access to running cron jobs on your host.

cron doesn't have to be run on your web server host -- setup a cron job anywhere that periodically browses cron.php on your site

Logs > Status Report (verify everything looks ok)

Site building > Modules

Site building > Blocks

User management > Roles (setup an admin role)

User management > Access control (give admin role full access)

Site Configuration > Performance

Recommended Modules by Category

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

implement a "good" theme - a vital practice, not a module

a good theme is most important to SEO

best for SEO if theme places the main content before the sidebars in the HTML

the default (Garland) is mostly pretty good (unfortunately the left sidebar is before the main content)

path

in core

maps URLs like /node/1 to something like /welcome

pathauto

automatically generate paths

most useful with taxonomy

great for search engines

Meta tags

formerly known as: nodewords

puts <META> tags in documents

highly configurable, often runs on autopilot

XML Sitemap

formerly known as: gsitemap

creates sitemap.xml

provides an index for search engines

generally runs on autopilot

Content-Focused Modules

taxonomy

in core

create vocabularies, terms within vocabularies

use to put categories, tags, whatever-you-wanna-call-it on nodes

category - not recommended

designed to replace the core "taxonomy" module

some people like the features it adds

not friendly for core upgrades

once categories are in use, you are committed. Reverting to taxonomies is a non-trivial task.

views

slice and dice content

queries database to create custom blocks, pages of teaser lists, and more

panels

create a page with content arranged into areas, e.g. multicolumn

no custom page coding required

diff

shows differences between node revisions

revisions (supported in core) are required, but not on by default

check "create a new revision" in "publishing options"

Do Administer > Content types to turn on by default for a node type

cck (content construction kit)

create custom fields on nodes

plays well with views

Images

Images are used so differently among different types of websites that it is difficult to recommend "must have" modules for a basic site. However, here are a few modules that are worth exploring for basic functions.

image

create nodes that are images and can upload them

imagefield

used with CCK

add images to posts

Image Assist (img_assist)

helps with uploading and inserting images

Administration Modules

update status

you want this

will be core in Drupal 6

tells you when contributed modules have been updated

lets you know when an update is critical

Community Modules

blog

in core

meant for a community blog site: multiple authors, articles promoted to front

single user blog could just use story content type

forums, comments, and tracker

in core

beware of performance impacts on large sites, especially combined with tracker

buddylist

Privatemsg

Other

devel

for developers

can do some database performance profiling

E-Commerce

some rough edges but most popular choice for ecommerce

has a mass of interconnected modules and dependencies are not obvious for add-on modules

requires token module

Ubercart might be an alternative in the future -- too early to be certain.

TinyMCE

WYSIWYG editor

some love it, some hate it

alternatives are fckeditor, htmlarea

a non-WYSIWYG alternative is quicktags

Other Cool Modules

LoginToboggan

can allow user to select their own password from the beginning

can send email with link to activate account

Web Form

a fancier contact form

one cool alternate approach is create a content type in CCK and turn off "published" status by default

CAPTCHA, akismet

modules to prevent spam [What is a captcha?]

organic groups

service links

Notes from the 6/19 Meetup

The 6/19 meetup was once again at Four Kitchens studios. During tonight's gathering, David Strauss talked about multi-site Drupal configuration, basic site configuration procedure, and (the night's main topic) most essential and useful modules for a Drupal site. The meeting was very well attended (about 20 people) and David (as always) gave a great presentation.

The summary conclusion for multi-site installation is that it's less than meets the eye. It allows you to share one code installation across multiple Drupal sites. It doesn't solve the hard problems, such as database updates when a module is updated. It also introduces problems, such as leaking content between sites (e.g. a shared files directory).

(My personal solution is to use a dedicated installation for each site, but symlink sites/all to a common directory so I can share modules across sites. Unlike multi-site I need to do core updates individually, but that's done much less frequently than module updates. Like multi-site I still have the hassle of running running update.php everywhere when a module updates. Basically, it provides 90% of the benefit of multi-site without the related "content leakage" problem.)

Here are my notes from the rest of the meeting:

10:50pm update: Per request from David, I've moved the rest of this article a wiki page so others could contribute to the notes.

Austin Meetup on Tue, 6/19/07, 7-9 pm @ Four Kitchen Studios. Topic: The Top Ten Contributed Modules.

Who

Calling all Central Texas Drupalers!
Meetups are very informal and Drupal users of all levels - new users to expert users - are encouraged to attend and participate.

What

Austin Drupal Users Group Meetup!
Good Austin Meeting

Tonight's Austin Drupal meeting was the first I attended. And I enjoyed it. I'm especially glad to see follow-up meetings set for CiviCRM, Basic Drupal Installation, and Theming -- for this June.

As I said at the meeting, around the country there is interest on the part of public access and community media in Drupal.

Here is a website where some of this development is described:
www.pegspace.org

On this site, it mentions Manhattan Neighbohood Networks' work with CiviCRM.

Blogging Systems Group, the leading blog services provider to the real estate industry, is seeking an Experienced Designer that is comfortable customizing themes for Drupal CMS. The following skills are required:

Photoshop skills

XHTML skills

CSS skills

PHP skills

Drupal PHPTemplate skills

Some MySQL skills

Some JavaScript skills

Bonus if you understand:

Cross-browser compatibility

Accessibility (Section 508)

Web Standards

Due to the relative urgency of our need to add additional design capability we are seeking only individuals who are already familiar with many/most these skills. Even if you are missing a couple please don't hesitate to contact us. We value intelligence over knowledge in most cases, but getting up to speed trumps this concern somewhat at this time. There are a couple of ways the right applicant can fit into the company depending on their skill and comfort at Drupal design.

This posting is for a work from home/telecommute position. We are interested in persons looking for a full time employment. Our primary concern is your competence, and near-term availability.

If you feel you have what it takes, please email your resume or other document evidencing your qualificaitons to Chris Bubny, Director of Operations. His email address is: cbubny at bloggingsystems dot com.

Come join the Digett team as we present an all-day, hands-on Drupal theming workshop.

This workshop is aimed at a beginner to intermediate level, and will provide everything possible to bring you up to speed on the most fundamental element in leveraging Drupal to create a powerful, attractive solution for your clients. Planned sessions include theming basics, building a theme from the ground up, and theming Views and CCK. Bring your laptop and works-in-progress as we will be glad to help you hammer out any obstacles you are facing. We also plan on having a panel discussion including team members with expertise in development, design and business.

Details

We'll be meeting at the very hip Parish Room on 6th street. We are limiting seating to 35. Early bird rate is $199. We are in the process of building an online registration form, so until then you can simply inquire via email. Proceeds will benefit the Drupal Association.

About Digett

Digett is a web marketing firm based in Boerne, Texas. Drupal has become our CMS of choice and we are looking for ways to share our passion with others.
