Hello,

I have only been a member of this group for about a week. So I apologize if I missed my answer somewhere on this site.

When is the next meeting? I would like to get together with other drupal beginners and experts to discuss setting up a drupal site. Being new to drupal, I installed 5.7 and have been playing around with the basic core features. But where to go from there is the question. Also there are parts of drupal I don't really understand - taxonomy, cck, views, setting up the administrative side of things. Did I say I was new to drupal? :)

Anyway, let me know if anyone is interested in getting together to discuss how to set up a drupal site.

I am also a lessons person. I enjoy taking lessons and classes when I am learning something new. If that would be of interest to others as well.

How do you do mailing list?

Hey Y'all,
I have been working with drupal off and on for a while now... I have a really (what I think will be ) simple question- but I have not really found a good answer to it...

I am looking for a way to use drupal to replace yahoogroups. What I need to be able to do:
1. is have users start threads via email
2. have the threads stored, just like our Organic Group here is doing
3. be able to alter the emails slightly (putting them into a template)

OG does everything except for #1. OG2List looks like it might do this, but the module developer says that it is not ready for Internet strength just yet... I am wondering... as this seems so fundamental... anyone done something different that they have reproduced mailing list integrated with Drupal?

It seems that MailMan (python based) would be good, but a quick search at the modules looks like this has not been recently updated.

Any ideas, especially ones that you have seen scale?

The Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented (TAGT) is a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit which provides professional training, advocacy, and membership-based services for educators and parents of gifted and talented children. We are looking for someone to assist us in stripping our website out of a proprietary CMS and reproducing it with Drupal themes. Our Austin office is located on the IH-35 access road between Riverside and Oltorf (south).

Our site is fairly large, but with a simple page layout template - subpages are simply chunks of HTML (often html tables) with a subpage ID. We're not looking for new visual/structural design (yet), so this should be a fairly quick project for an experienced drupal user.

Our contract ends in June, so we need to get started soon. I'm hoping a fairly advanced user will help me (noob) reach a level of competence at which I can start applying more advanced Drupal concepts and features in the future.

Telecommuting would be allowable on condition of regular communication and a minimum office hours weekly for staff training and teamwork.

Update: Thanks to everyone who responded so quickly to my initial query. Because we need to move forward quickly, and we don't have time to discuss this in-depth with everyone who would be available to do this project, I'm posting a formal request for proposals. Texas Community Media to Hold Summit in Austin

Austin, TX – The Texas Community Media Summit, hosted by channelAustin (aka Public Access Community Television), Dallas iMedia Network, Houston Media Source, and the Texas Media Empowerment Project will take place at 10 am on Saturday, March 1, at the University of Texas at Austin’s Texas Union. Organizers expect 150 to 200 people from across the state.

The Texas Community Media Summit will bring together Texas community media makers, stakeholders, activists, and advocates representing a full spectrum of community media: art, theater, print, radio, film, television, and Internet.

US patent reform and open source: Who is the best candidate for the OS community?

My friend whurley has launched an online poll to bring open source to the attention of politicians -- specifically, the presidential candidates. He, like many of us, is troubled by the recent calls for patent reform put forth by larger companies that may wind up blocking innovation and threatening open source-oriented companies and contractors.

You can view the poll here and vote for which candidate you believe is best for the open source community. (Don't worry: "None of them" is an option!)

Assume for a moment that a knowledge of open source is prerequisite (or integral) in solving issues like patent reform. Who would you vote for? In other words, who would be the best candidate for the open source community?

The more people who vote, the more of an impact this question can make.

Adding/Removing Yourself as an Event "Attendee"

The signup.module has been implemented on this site.

Moshe recently added a New Attendees tab on event nodes here on g.d.o. If you go to an Event page such as the Austin Meetup on Sat, 2/09/08 and run your mouse over the i am not attending link at the bottom of the event description, it should tell you the following:

Mark me as "attending" for this event

It's basically a toggle switch so if you ARE attending, you can go ahead and click it and it will add your name to the list at the "Attendees" tab at the top of the respective event page and the toggle switch for you will change to i am attending.

If you later change your mind and decide you will NOT be attending after having previously signed up as an "Attendee", then run your mouse over the i am attending link on the respective event page and it should tell you the following:

Mark me as "not" attending for this event

Again, it's basically a toggle switch so if you decide later on to NOT attend after having signed up, go ahead and click it and it will remove your name from the "Attendees" tab at the top of the respective event page. (The "toggle" wording/functionality is a bit confusing so I'm hoping it gets improved a bit.)

Of course, if you have a comment to make, then by all means go ahead and add yourself to the list of "Attendees" and then make your comment...or make your comment and then add yourself to the list.

In the end, you should be able to click on the "Attendees" tab and see everyone that plans to attend. Nifty, eh?

I'm only throwing this out as an option since I haven't seen any other ideas for February. If you have an alternative idea, let's hear it!

In the meantime and for our February meetup, what do you think about doing something similar to the Boston's group's Lightning Talks?

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to present for 5 minutes on a topic of their choosing. You may show off your Drupal site, ask some questions of the audience, give a module demonstration, share some marketing ideas for Drupal, and so on. Just keep it brief. No expertise required - just do it.

If we get some positive responses, can someone please volunteer to host the event? And if you volunteer to host, you get to choose the date! Tuesdays and Wednesdays 7-9 pm seem to work best.

Advantages/disadvantages of using "Content types" vs. using "Taxonomy"

Hey everyone!

Thanks again to Matt V., Jonathon, and Sam for their wonderful presentations last night and for the excellent hosting!

Also, I'm trying to recollect some of the comments made last night. If I heard correctly, Matt primarily used "Views" and "Taxonomy" for his presentation; specifically, he used "Taxonomy" (mysite.com/admin/content/taxonomy) to classify content into categories and subcategories. Jonathon, on the other hand, primarily used "Content types" (mysite.com/admin/content/types) in lieu of "Taxonomy" to classify content. Is that correct?

If correct, could someone please elaborate on what was mentioned at the meeting? Jonathon made a comment or two on using "Content types" over "Taxonomy" which I've since forgotten. I didn't take notes and I'm trying to understand the advantages/disadvantages of using Jonathon's method vs. using "Taxonomy". I think my brain was on dial-up speed last night! LOL.

Hello Austin Drupalers,

After the success of the last November meetup (http://groups.drupal.org/node/7101), studley181 (Jonathon) and I will be hosting the next Austin Drupal Groups Meetup on January 16, 7pm, at the Austin Optaros Office (801 Congress Ave, above the Chipotle.) As before, parking can be found either in metered spaces downtown or at the St. David's parking garage. Studley181 and I will be meeting attendants in front of the building just before 7pm, and afterwards the doors will be locked. If you arrive a little late and the doors are locked, call me at 2814673082 and I'll run down to let you in.

Studley181 put up a poll earlier (http://groups.drupal.org/node/7394) concerning topics to be discussed at the next meetup and there was a good discussion of topics people would like to see and formats for the next meetup. This time we plan to discuss the CCK and Views modules, which fellow Austin Drupaler Matt V. has graciously volunteered to present. Jonathon will then present an advanced theming-related topic, and afterwards those who are interested in Drupal development are welcome to stay longer for a discussion of Drupal development issues, including the upcoming Drupal 6 release and what it means for developers. This meetup should be a great opportunity for the Austin Drupal community to meet up and discuss Drupal issues, and share knowledge that will benefit everyone. How do I format results from form Api?

I just built my first module today. It is inanely simple, but it works. I created two fields that the user fills in, and using the values from those fields I made it do a simple calculation. Now I'm trying to figure out how to take the results from those calculations and control the output a bit more. The only way that I have found to print the results from a form in drupal is with drupal_print_message. This works for single result equations, but later I need to be able to end up with multiple results and do more advanced formatting with tables or unordered list. I have seen this done in regular php through for loops, but I don't really understand how to go from the submit function and pass the results on to a another function that will calculate and format the results. Can anyone give me any pointers?

I based my module on the module demo on page 154 of "Pro Drupal Development."

Help With Local church Conversion to Drupal

Heya gang!

So Calvaryaustin.org is going to be moving off of CMS made easy. not including their fron page the entire site is in flash and iframes.
It was really done poorly. I have been tasked with migrating to Drupal! I am so new to drupal and really could use some help.

For instance the front page is pade up of a header main body and three unique graphics that change out.

Not sure how I would template this correctly in drupal.
If you have a suggestion take a look at www.calvaryaustin.org and give me some advice.

I would also like to get the group involved in this and use this as a Austin Group project. Might be fun.

Let me know what you think sbout the idea, I can create a dev server that we all can access for developing this. It might be a way for some of us "including me" to learn much and get to know some of you better.

I was sorry to be out of town and miss the first meeting since I joined the group, particularly as I really would have liked to learn more about Search Engine Optimization On that theme, I have a question now I am wondering whether you covered or whether anyone has any insight into. I tried asking on the Drupal forum but no one responded. Perhaps, since SEO is in focus here at Drupal Austin, some people will find it interesting to address this question.

What is better for blog SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Drupal or Wordpress? I AM NOT ASKING about the relative merits of each in terms of blog usability, flexibility, etc, which I know is addressed elsewhere (i.e. I know Wordpress is easier for beginners if you just want a basic blog. . . and Drupal allows a lot more flexibility for different kinds of content and expandability). I am trying to make the best choice for a blog with SEO front in mind.

Please assume for this discussion that the Wordpress modules and codes are being used so that robots will not follow links to duplicate pages (i.e. the same page listed with a url in archives, in categories, in rss feeds). I understand this to be the main difference between Drupal and Wordpress for SEO. Drupal taxonomy allows for more flexible category views and thus less duplication (correct?). So, if this issue is removed for Wordpress, do the two systems work equally well for SEO (again, specifically for BLOGS only).? Is there anything else that makes one significantly better than the other? Hw much differencee is there likely to be?

I learned a lot at the Tuesday meeting. Thanks for starting this group.

After the meeting, it occurred to me that the group might benefit from a group development meeting sometime. Or perhaps, a forum exploring how can we helped each other more.

For example, the non-pros can probably help the pros by being part of their sales force. Many of my friends know that I know more about websites than they do. Sometimes they ask me for help setting up a site, and sometimes I am in a position to refer my friend/colleague to a pro-web developer. ...but which pros have which expertise? ...besides Ben, I know what he knows. The pros can help the non-pros with their expertise...but what would our group of non-pros find most helpful?

And of course it might be worthwhile to explore how the pros could help each other.

Anyway, that's my input.

I am posting this here in hopes that someone else has worked with Todd's BareBones theme and can provide some insight into my issue.. I've got a background-image on the footer that looks fine in FF, but the footer itself is shifted left ~24px (or a couple em's?) in IE6. I think it works fine in IE7 but haven't yet tested there.

I was provided a few "Open Source and Web Development Roadmap" booklets which list dozens of books on open source, e.g. Ajax, Apache, CSS, HTML, JavaScript, Linux, MySQL, PHP, etc. Apress is "always looking for people interested in checking out and reviewing" their new titles. Suggestions for Writing Apress Book Reviews

If you would like to review any titles for your user group, I suggest your Drupal Users Group leader fill out the Apress User Group Program application. Apress writes, "To prevent duplicate registrations, we request that only user group leaders--not members--register their groups." Once your group leader fills out the application, he or she can then contact Cheryl Martinez as listed on the attachment to review new titles. Although I didn't scan the Roadmap, you can get a pretty good idea of it by visiting the Apress roadmaps online at their web site.

If your Drupal Users Group isn't already a registered Apress User Group, you might want to consider joining which would allow your members 25% off their books, not to mention probably a few free ones as long as you agree to review their books and post your thoughts online as mentioned in get copies of books to share.

The 501 Tech Club is a social/networking organization for tech people at non-profit (so-called 501(c)) organizations. This will be a completely introductory (non-developer) presentation. I think what I'm going to do is start with a laptop and the Drupal 5.1 tarball and show them how, in about half an hour, I can setup a complete community site with Drupal.

Exploring Drupal and Video for Workshop

I'm interested in working with others to explore Drupal and Video with a goal of developing a meet-up presentation on this topic.

I don't want to define it too much here, because I'd rather this be a collaborative effort. For now, I'm curious of the registered users in this group, who among us are interested in video.

Hey Austin!

If you want to give a shout out as to what you do and how you're working with Drupal, that would be great!

During our meetups, we really don't have time for attendees to share detailed intros with the group. We tried intros at one of our meetups and, in the process, consumed over an hour when we could have been learning or teaching others about Drupal.

As a result, intros at future meetups will be great if they're no more than 10 seconds long each to provide basics such as your name, your organization, and what you're doing/hoping to do with Drupal, e.g. "Hi, I'm Walt Esquivel, I'm with Wellness Corps, and I'm using Drupal to help me establish a wellness presence primarily through Organic Groups." For everything else intro-related that you want to share with the Austin DUG, please do it online. This page is the place for you to do it! :)

So, feel free to provide whatever you'd like here on this Austin intro list. Here are some ideas:

I'll take the lead by saying my name is Walt and I've started a company called Wellness Corps. I'm the founder and president of my one-man company so I do everything from installing Drupal modules to taking out the trash. :) With Drupal, my goal is to establish wellness-related groups all across our wonderful planet! :)

I like working with Drupal because it's easy to set up and provides so many contributed modules for customized functionality. My company's website is bare-bones at the moment as I just uploaded a few modules after trying them out on my test website. Come back in a week or two and it will be much more presentable.

My previous experience includes marketing, sales, consulting, and logistics, among others. I have an MBA in marketing/information mgt and an MA in human resources. I served in the Marine Corps as an officer for 8 years and there's more info about me than you ever want to know on my LinkedIn page. Notes from the 6/19 Meetup

The 6/19 meetup was once again at Four Kitchens studios. During tonight's gathering, David Strauss talked about multi-site Drupal configuration, basic site configuration procedure, and (the night's main topic) most essential and useful modules for a Drupal site. The meeting was very well attended (about 20 people) and David (as always) gave a great presentation.

The summary conclusion for multi-site installation is that it's less than meets the eye. It allows you to share one code installation across multiple Drupal sites. It doesn't solve the hard problems, such as database updates when a module is updated. It also introduces problems, such as leaking content between sites (e.g. a shared files directory).

(My personal solution is to use a dedicated installation for each site, but symlink sites/all to a common directory so I can share modules across sites. Unlike multi-site I need to do core updates individually, but that's done much less frequently than module updates. Like multi-site I still have the hassle of running running update.php everywhere when a module updates. Basically, it provides 90% of the benefit of multi-site without the related "content leakage" problem.)

Tonight's Austin Drupal meeting was the first I attended. And I enjoyed it. I'm especially glad to see follow-up meetings set for CiviCRM, Basic Drupal Installation, and Theming -- for this June.

As I said at the meeting, around the country there is interest on the part of public access and community media in Drupal.

Come join the Digett team as we present an all-day, hands-on Drupal theming workshop.

This workshop is aimed at a beginner to intermediate level, and will provide everything possible to bring you up to speed on the most fundamental element in leveraging Drupal to create a powerful, attractive solution for your clients. Planned sessions include theming basics, building a theme from the ground up, and theming Views and CCK. Bring your laptop and works-in-progress as we will be glad to help you hammer out any obstacles you are facing. We also plan on having a panel discussion including team members with expertise in development, design and business.

We'll be meeting at the very hip Parish Room on 6th street. We are limiting seating to 35. Early bird rate is $199. We are in the process of building an online registration form, so until then you can simply inquire via email. Proceeds will benefit the Drupal Association.
