Encyclopedia of Life / Taxonomy Code Sprint

The Encyclopedia of Life is keenly interested in using Drupal to allow participants the opportunity to carve off branches from the tree of life to start biologically meaningful social interactions among like-minded individuals. To really make use of Drupal, we're keen on improving the taxonomy module and we're also keen on developing several other modules to really make this work. The advancements made in the taxonomy module will no doubt be useful for many other projects that make heavy use of taxonomy.

So, to kick-off our relationship with Drupal, we will be hosting a code sprint at the Field Museum in Chicago September 8-11. Please spread the word and also visit http://sprint.eol.org to see what we have in store for participants.

Space will be limited so please hurry!

Let's hope this can kick-start lots of great things to come.

If you're in the Central Illinois region and are willing to help out and present, we'd love for you to sign up on the site at http://slane.bradley.edu/drupalbootcamp/ and let Steve and I know, ASAP. Steve and I have conceived a set of morning sessions which will demonstrate and teach Drupal basics in the context of building a site one step at a time.

It may also be possible to video conference a few presenters in if you can't make it down to Peoria for the day but would still like to help out.

So please, sign up on the event website and contact Steven Merrill and myself if you can help us out!

Commercial Real Estate Deal Tracker Wanted

We are looking for a Commercial Real Estate deal making area- where one tracks commercial property BUYER parameters and SELLER deal characteristics. Has anyone put together a system that can match-make effectively? Can be in Drupal or can tie into Durpal with PHP/MySQL solution or perhaps an even more eloquent solution. We are just not fond of high cost per user as there may be a number of people accessing this private network.

DrupalBootCamp UIUC Feedback

I thought I'd create this thread as a place to put feedback about DrupalBootCamp UIUC and see what that will mean for our May BU DrupalBootCamp.

This first one comes from one of our IT staff that visited the morning sessions:

---
I thought the UIUC Drupal event was very informative. I liked that each speaker had a short stint on their topic, and things moved along at a good pace. Starting off with your presentation provided a nice segue into the rest of the morning topics.
I was also quite impressed with some of the sites shown later, both in design and content. The judicial site that Brian showed really opened my eyes to the power of Drupal when it comes to tying data together in different ways. Too bad we didn’t see something like that when we were shopping for editorial front end systems for newpapers at my last job!

The sites that Brandon (I think) showed were great to display what can be done graphically to move away from a basic Drupal template.

You made a good point that once you learn Drupal, you can’t unlearn it, and go back to help others. It’s frustrating to be at the other end of things, trying to learn and get up to speed, but after attending the conference, I have much more respect for what can be done once one gets past the learning curve, and more desire to get to that point.
---

BU Drupal Boot Camp

UPDATE: We have much more information about our BU event on May 2nd. It will be free, and breakfast items and lunch will be provided. It will be in GCC Room 124 on Bradley University's campus, which is a room with teleconference facilities, so we may be able to teleconference in a presenter or two, or stream the event live - we're still investigating these possibilties. Please sign up for a user account on our site if you want to attend so we can get food for you.

The site has been updated with more information, such as directions, and our agenda. More will follow as we have time.

---
Would you like to learn how to build easily-updated websites with a free, community-support tool?

Would you like to have a website that combines many community features, like forums, blogs, and RSS feeds?

Let our team of Central Illinois experts teach you how to do all this with Drupal at the BU Drupal Boot Camp.

We aim to use a similar format as the recent UIUC Drupal Boot Camp.

The BU Drupal Boot Camp is being organized by Steven Merrill and Brian McMurray. It is designed for people with general web knowledge (HTML and CSS knowledge will help.) No prior knowledge of Drupal or PHP are required.

Our goal is to build a complete site from scratch using Drupal in the morning and by doing so, cover all of the introductory topics you'll need to understand how to build an content-managed site with Drupal.

In the afternoon, we'll have more advanced presentations, such as how to enable your site for e-commerce, multimedia, and do more advanced theming. We'll also offer hands-on help from Drupal experts - bring a Drupal project you're working on! Even if you've never used Drupal, the Chicago Drupal meetup group will provide Drupal test drives where you can try out Drupal, even if you don't have web hosting.

We'll be fleshing out the agenda in the coming week. A site for the event will be located at http://slane.bradley.edu/drupalbootcamp/ .

Drupal Boot Camp del.icio.us Tags - Help us build up a great list of resources

In an effort to compile some great resources for our Drupal Boot Camp Champaign participants, we want you to help us tag your favorite Drupal-related resources on del.icio.us

Please tag your favorite links in the following way:
drupal, bootcamp, [topic]

Where [topic] is one of the following:

intro -- For resources related to what Drupal is, why people choose Drupal vs. other CMSs, etc

basics -- Basic Drupal jargon, getting started, installation walkthroughs, etc

theming -- Your favorite contrib themes, theming guides and help

modules -- The modules you use most, tips for finding the best modules, etc

community -- Resources on how to get involved with the Drupal community and hook up with like-minded peers

inspire -- For resources which showcase just how awesome Drupal is and what can be achieved including but not limited to beautiful feature-rich websites

We will then be giving out the following links to event attendees (and now, you!) as a place to find and contribute more useful links as we all come across new useful articles and reference:

http://del.icio.us/tag/drupal+bootcamp+intro

http://del.icio.us/tag/drupal+bootcamp+basics

http://del.icio.us/tag/drupal+bootcamp+theming

Drupal Boot Camp Champaign is going to be a huge event. John Barclay is organizing with the help of the other Central Illinois DUG and we have been astounded to have over 80 RSVPs from the Champaign/Urbana area alone and we will also be webcasting this to the University of Illinois in Chicago where up to 100 more people will be joining us digitally.

We could really use the help and minds of you, the community, in compiling these lists while we all finish preparing our sessions to accommodate all of our attendees!

Drupal Table at Flourish Conference April 4th and 5th?

The Flourish conference is next weekend (April 4th and 5th), and it seems like a logical place to do some Drupal marketing.

It looks like we'd still be able to get a table.

Are there other folks planning on attending that would be up for setting up a marketing table?

There's also a Web Framework throwdown, although I see someone beat to that post...

From their website:

The goal of the Flourish Conference is to promote the use and adoption of Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) by demonstrating the practical applications of FLOSS in the business and academic world. While everyone is familiar with businesses that focus on creating non-free proprietary software, the same cannot be said for those who specialize in developing and supporting FLOSS software, and an Open Culture. By attending Flourish, you will get an opportunity to see how using, creating, and supporting FLOSS software can enhance your career, your business, and academic aspirations. Come and Flourish!

Flourish 2008 will feature influential and technical speakers, social events, an exhibition area, a development competition and more. Attendees will have the opportunity to network and socialize with the Chicago open source community as well as people from other areas of the country. This year we are expecting about 400 attendees. We are hoping that you can be one of them.

We hope to see you there at the Flourish 2008 Conference on April 4th and 5th at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

Web Application Framework Throwdown in Chicago!

Hi There,

Just saw this post on ycombinator: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=147424

I'm not in Chicago, but I figured the Chicago Drupaleros would like to know about it.

Here's what it says:
Anyone up for a web application framework rumble?

We're throwing an open source conference at University of Illinois at Chicago called Flourish (http://www.flourishconf.com). As one of the attractions at the event, we're going to have a Web Application Framework Rumble. I was thinking that maybe some of the Chicago hackers here might want to take part in this.
We'll be building an application for a non-profit in a period of about 3 hours, using different web application frameworks. During the course of this, we'll be showing everyone's progress with various frameworks and sort of encouraging some friendly competition between the different camps. And everything will be released under the GPL.

So far, we've got interest from 37signals for RoR and the CakePHP and web2py core developers. Also, there will be free food. Any interested parties?

Drupal Developer Team Needs More Hands (Intern or Volunteer) | AAPC

> Do you feel there is something more to preventing gun violence than merely getting rid of guns?

> Ever think that there is something missing to the current dialog on failing schools, and the 50 percent high school drop-out rate in Chicago and elsewhere?

> Concerned about kids being raised psychologically-rudderless?

> Ever wish there was a way you could do more to help create awareness for the big picture, and make Illinois a better place to raise kids?

A local group of Web Development students is looking for 1-2 recent grads to join an existing contingent of like-minded Web-heads concerning Non-profit volunteerism for a 13 week internship to assist in the development of an online campaign (Micro-site, Blog and Wiki) designed to help create awareness of key issues which impact parental involvement with at-risk children.

Our approach is flexible. We're currently building with Drupal (remotely and on our own schedules)--collaborating via phone and email during the week.

If you have a few hours to spare and are looking for a fun, collaborative team to join for something meaningful, benefits the public good, and talk about the latest developments in open-source CMS for non-profits, please let us know. Send text resume (no attachments, please) to us,
Attn: Jennifer Teschy, info (at) illinoisparentsandchildren (dot) org.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

DrupalCamp CentralIL in May?

Hey Drupalers,

I was talking with some of Bradley's IT higher-ups as part of a portal project that my students are helping skin. Once mentioned that our university webmaster was looking at Drupal, and I immediately began to espouse the benefits of Drupal. (Several of the Slane College sites use Drupal, with several more on the way.)

I mentioned that I'd be willing to help them plan such an implementation, and then someone asked if I could show a few people around Drupal, and maybe do a little training.

In the spirit of the Drupal community, I asked if Bradley could instead sponsor a DrupalCamp. My contacts in IT seemed very receptive to the idea, and said that we could get some labs and some food. We also have a few local multimedia shops who might be able to sponsor anything else that was needed. Bradley has a wireless campus, A/V equipment, and nice labs.

My current schedule and the BU academic schedule will necessitate that this happen in mid-May once final exams are done, and everyone is quite a bit freer. So what do you think, everyone? I think there would be value in having one track full of lower-level sessions designed for beginners, so that we can teach Bradley staff and anyone else who's curious about Drupal some things and get them over the first few humps of the learning curve. (I'd love to see the same kind of sessions as we had at DrupalCampWI: How to contribute, how to do podcasts, using the big contrib modules, theming, etc.)

At the same time, we are lucky in that we could get KarenS, Brian and myself, Crell, or any number of people to also do a track of advanced sessions, but I think it would be great to have one full track for the new or very inexperienced user.

Let me know what you think, but I am very excited at this opportunity, not just because it looks like most of BU might move to Drupal, but also because we have a chance here to use our nice facilities to get a lot of people involved and up to speed.

CDMUG Rules

Do not attend CDMUG events unless you have RSVP'd @ drupal.meetup.com/1 . If you are not on the RSVP list, DO NOT attend the event. I have been nice about this in the past, but too many people took advantage. onShore can barley hold 15 people. Any additional spaces are reserved for onShore employees. People who have not RSVP'd will be turned away.

Do not RSVP for events you will not attend. Save room for dedicated Drupalers.

Do not attend CDMUG early. The meetup starts @ 8 pm, not 7:15 pm. onShore is a place of business and employees will be working until the meetup starts. If you arrive to the area early there are two coffee shops within 1 block on Chicago Ave. www.chimercurycafe.com & www.swimcafe.com

Pizza will no longer be served at onShore. Please eat before the event. This will allow us to focus more on Drupal.

If you have any questions please contact me.
Drupal developer needed on per-feature basis for Chicago entertainment publication | HollywoodChicago.com

Recently launched Drupal site HollywoodChicago.com is looking for a skilled, experienced, talented and reliable Drupal developer to make ongoing feature improvements and site updates. The site exists in a LAMP environment. Some coding requests to the overall site will be required, but in general, we are seeking a Drupal developer to make upgrades on an as-needed basis.

Our first upgrade, for example, is installing a more robust ad system. Our ads currently only support one ad per unit. We want a system installed that allows for multiple ads per unit that can display based on weight, can track impressions and clicks, can allow for an image we upload or code, can allow for Flash, etc.

Please contact me if you feel you're qualified to work on my site and let me know if you have any questions. Please specify your requested hourly rate, describe your experience and provide a few examples of Drupal sites you've done. Applicants don't necessarily need to be based in Chicago but should be based in the U.S. Must be able to hit deadlines and reliably contact us via phone and/or e-mail.

Congressional Campaign Site: DebbieHalvorson.com

I'm still kind of knocked out -- been working 24/7 on this one for several weeks. That said...

I'm pleased to announce the availability online of DebbieHalvorson.com:

http://www.DebbieHalvorson.com

Debbie's running for Congress in the 11th CD of Illinois.

I'm using Drupal 5.5, CCK, Views, Views Slideshow, Calendar, ImageCache, Custom Breadcrumbs, Foundation theme, CiviCRM, etc.

Overall, it's incredible how much easier it was doing this site compared to one I did during the last cycle. Instead of using "snippets", I was able to define pretty much everything in Views. My Content Types this time round -- 'Press Release', 'Article from the Media', 'Blog Post', etc. -- take full advantage of CCK. Formerly I used Flexinode.

Another big improvement was using ImageCache. Basically Campaign Staff can now add images to any content type. They can also designate any node as "spotlight" for the 'In Focus' section on the front page.

As far as theming goes, I really didn't have any problems converting my original graphic design to a customized theme using baseline files from the Foundation Theme. I just created "regions" for all the divs and then added them to the template file.

I still have a few tweaks to make. My current challenge is seeing if we can somehow use the (overly complicated) CiviEvents for our Events management. Yuck.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the results.

January Meet up?

Are there people still interested in a Central IL DUG meet up in Peoria this month? It would need to be near the end of this month (After DrupalCampWI, at least) but I can arrange for a room at Bradley University if there's interest.

Steven Merrill and I were thinking that beyond just socializing we could cover more in-depth on the talk we're giving at DrupalCampWI about Druplash and Druplex (Drupal-powered Flash and Flex). Post back here with preferred times/dates and anything specific you want to hear about (or better yet, talk about).

Video games are also always an option.

ext/elePHPant anyone?

Anyone interested? :-) They're not expensive, but ordering from Europe makes the shipping more costly, hence ordering in bulk.

I've already got a few bites from the ChiPHP list. I can order and distribute them at a later meeting.

CCK 6.x Program in Central Illinois

I just thought I'd post a notice here that we're going to have a program downstate on the changes coming in CCK in Drupal 6.x. It will be in Normal on Thursday, November 29 (see http://groups.drupal.org/node/7103). It's a bit of a drive for an evening meeting, but it looks like we may have at least one person coming from Chicago now, and I know this is a topic many people are interested in, so I thought I'd mention it in the Chicago group.

Central Illinois user group is forming...

If anyone is interested or knows anyone who might be interested, I'm trying to get a downstate user group going. It's the Central Illinois User Group at http://groups.drupal.org/central-illinois-drupal-users.

I'm still interested supporting or working together on Chicago events, too, if something more than a one hour meeting is going on. It's a bit too much to drive 2-3 hours each way for a one hour meeting :)

Don't know how many, if any, Drupal users there are downstate, but we'll see what happens :)

Leo Klein on Drupal (Chicago)

Okay, this one is so far off it's almost crazy to talk about, but since they just posted it, I thought I might as well put out the word -- at least for people in the Chicagoland area interested in Drupal.

Drupal of course is a popular open-source content management system. I'll be giving an introduction to it at the offices of the Metropolitan Library System in Chicago on Friday, 2/29, 1:30-4:30. (Yes, leap year day!)

I'll first go over the basics of the system -- the good, the bad, and the buggy -- in the context of open source software. Then, I'll discuss how certain features of Drupal can be used to solve typical library content needs.

You don't have to be an expert to attend this thing -- just someone interested in how modern content management systems work.

For more info and to register: http://tinyurl.com/2hwua3

Hope to see you,

Freelance Drupal Development & Design | Chicago City Arts/Cultural Chicago

Request for Proposal (RFP) - CulturalChicago.com

CulturalChicago.com is a local arts Web site run by Chicago City Arts LLC and Scenergy Marketing LLC. It currently operates as a weekly online local arts magazine. Chicago City Arts LLC also operates an art gallery and an online fine art print site. Scenergy Marketing LLC is a online and social media marketing company. Both companies are based in Chicago. The point of contact for this proposal is:

Matt McDermott
matthew@chicagocityarts.com

Deadline for proposals: Wednesday, September 5th, 2007.
Selection will take place by Sept. 7th.

Key criteria for assessing proposal include:
1) Experience developing for Drupal/DrupalED,
2) Solid PHP/MySQL skills,
3) Familiarity with Google Maps API,
4) Ability to integrate a non-Drupal PHP script into Drupal.
5) Drupal theme design skills – not necessary for consideration but preferred

Project Overview: The ultimate goal is to expand the existing site to a subscription-based social networking site with a weekly local arts magazine as the front end.

Time Frame: We would like to launch the redesigned site in October.
Base installation: DrupalED -   http://www.drupaled.org/

DrupalED functionality to be utilized in CulturalChicago.com includes:
1.    a personal workspace;
2.    a group workspace;
3.    the ability for site members to create informal working groups;
4.    the ability to create formal class spaces;
5.    podcasting;
6.    wiki functionality;
7.    personal and class blogs;
8.    rss feeds for entire site, individual courses, individual terms, and individual users;
9.    personal image galleries;
10.   personal file repositories;
11.   the ability to create private, invitation-only groups;
12.   social bookmarking, with searching within bookmark descriptions;
13.   spam protection;
14.   assignment calendars by course;
15.   event calendars for site-wide events;

Example installation at     http://drupaled.alphabetademo.org/

Additional development needed:

Drupal dating module - including integration with following modules: user, profile, events, image, audio, video, plus access rights, and role assignment

Directory of local organizations (organization is a new node type, similar to a business listing) – with taxonomy, location module. Users can comment on organization listings (node comment module) with reviews, images, video clips, or admin-defined node type. Initial data will be provided through CSV file.

Organization nodes mapped on GMap. Data from organization directory will be used to build an aggregated GMap of organizations in Chicago. Default setting includes all organizations on map. Admin can opt to not publish individual organization nodes on map. User should be able to add organization that is not in the directory with admin approval.

When user clicks on a mapped location, it will display data about that organization. Will also display links to user reviews, comments, images, etc.

Node types – Event & Activity. Both node types need to be attached to an organization node or other location. Activity nodes are activities which can be done at an organization or location – non-time specific. Activities will not display on calendars. Events are time-specific activities, will be displayed on calendars.

New node type – Cultural experience trail map. Users can create a trail map by selecting organizations from the main organization directory to plot on a separate GMap. A user’s trail maps would be listed on that user’s profile so other users can see them. User can provide own comments or meta data to display with each organization on each trail map. The node type Trail Map will have its own taxonomy & central directory.

Users sell tickets to events. Building from events, calendar, RSVP, & ecommerce module, integrate a ticketing script so that assigned user roles can list events and sell tickets. All tickets sold through site merchant account. Possibly integrate open source event ticketing software.

User account balances – Basic accounting system to track ticket sales by seller. Perhaps modified version of user points module could be used.

Implement content recommendation engine module -

If possible, redesign the visual look of the theme or suggest a Drupal-experienced theme designer.

Site audience: Our site audience combines laypeople who are interested in the arts with actual arts practitioners and arts businesspeople.

Proposal Requirements: Programmer/Designer should provide portfolio examples and references. Explanation of proposed solution should be thorough but in clear language. Cost should be broken out by project section within the proposal so we can understand the overall development cost proposed. Please indicated available start date and projected finish date as well as include your standard Terms of Service (TOS) agreement.

Hi All,
It was great meeting a number of you at the CDMUG on the 23rd. Again, our company SkySite Property is looking to redesign our company website. I have jumped in to learn as much Drupal as I can and I have a lot of basic questions regarding navigation, taxonomy, themes, etc. I would benefit from sitting down with someone one on one to go over things directly. If anyone is interested in assisting us with this it will be greatly appreciated and we will compensate you for your time.
Please contact me at tony@skysiteproperty.com
Thanks
