This made me wonder, are there any local programming communities that offer support and are active? Not many.</p> <p>So, I decided I would create one, for South Africans, to bring together the vast talent in South Africa. It will be locally hosted (for those poor souls on local only bandwidth) and completely non profit. I ran a poll for about 3 weeks and spread it around in some local IRC channels. After 200 votes, the users had clearly decided on a domain name (which I have registered) and also liked the idea of using Drupal as a platform.</p> <p>The plan is as follows:<br /> -The site will consist of a blog type front page, where people can submit articles, which are then potentially approved by a staff member to appear on the front page.<br /> -There will be forums where users can post polls and threads for assistance or just take part in general chatter/forum stuff.<br /> -There will be a pastebin (<a href="http://drupal.org/project/geshifilter" title="http://drupal.org/project/geshifilter">http://drupal.org/project/geshifilter</a> looks good)<br /> -There will be a Projects page, very similar to the one found on Drupal.org - where users can register a locally developed, free/opensource project. Once their registration is accepted/complete, they will receive SVN/CVS space and a project page where bug tracking etc can happen. (Project* modules)</p> <p>Those are some of my ideas and I would appreciate any more you may have.</p> <p>This project is something I am taking very seriously and I assure you all it will not fail :D<br /> Hopefully we can get some talented graphic designers to make backgrounds which can be distributed into universities and colleges where teachers use projecters. Maybe even sponsored printing to spread flyers.</p> <p>Now, to be honest I had never heard of Drupal until someone I told my ideas to suggested it as the CMS platform - I checked it out and I like it very much, it is powerful and clean. So i thought of some sort of usb webserver of sorts so that it takes the website and database wherever i go so I can continue working on it seamlessly and I am not sure if i want to work on it from online. Every page that I open shows me only the description of the module but nothing else. For example, if I go to blocks, I don't see the actual blocks list. However the problem is that the client doesn't see the benefit of moving, for him the current version is fine and doesn't see the need to spend money to upgrade.</p> <p>Does anybody now any ways of selling the benefits or if there is any existing marketing and sales type kits? What are your payment gateway options?</p> <p>Well, first off, you'll need to sign up for a merchant account at your local bank - who will want a business plan from you - and most banks charge you for the setup. Then you'll probably pay fees of around R100/month (?) for that account. The banks take between 5 and 7% per transaction ( ::sigh:: ). Then sign up with a payment gateway and you're ready to accept online transactions. The question is, which payment gateway?</p> <p>I've only used <a href="http://www.vcs.co.za">Virtual Card Services</a> (VCS) before, and the technical integration into a site is pretty simple. You'll pay R125/month for VCS privileges...and R1 + 0.5% per transaction. There's <a href="http://drupal.org/project/ec_vcservices">a module for ecommerce</a> and <a href="http://drupal.org/node/266581">one in the pipeline for ubercart</a>.</p> <p>I haven't used any other gateways. Some suggestions are:</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.paypal.com">PayPal</a> (except if you're in SA <a href="https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-country-functionality-outside">they won't let you accept money</a>. <a href="http://online-e-commerce.co.za/index.php/PayPal-and-Credit-Card-success.html">These guys</a> reckon they've found a workaround involving somehow linking a Master Card to a PayPal account - although you'll have to buy the $6 ebook to find out how.) PayPal will <a href="https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_wp-pro-overview-outside">charge you</a> $30/month and 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. </li> <li><a href="http://www.authorize.net">Authorize.net</a> (who don't provide services directly to a client, but have a list of resellers who do. I referred a client to them, and after several months they were unsuccessful in getting an account - being in South Africa is apparently a problem.) </li> <li><a href="http://www.worldpay.com/">Worldpay</a> - one of my clients used them (on an html site) with success. 200 pounds setup, 300 pounds per month, 4.5% per transaction.</li> </ul> <p>Google tells me that some other options for South Africans are:</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.pricetag.co.za/">pricetag.co.za</a> - R570 setup fee, R200/month, 5.7% per transaction </li> <li><a href="http://www.mwebbusiness.co.za/products.aspx?ParentID=33&amp;MenuID=157">MWEB</a> - R590 setup, R350/month, R5.70 per transaction </li> <li><a href="http://www.iveri.co.za/">iVeri</a> - couldn't find prices on their site </li> <li><a href="http://www.setcom.com/">Setcom</a> - <a href="http://www.setcom.com/www/index.cfm?left=pages_left&amp;main=main&amp;site=1&amp;belongsto=706&amp;page_id=711">no monthly fees</a> (HOORAY!), 4.9% + R4 per transaction. The Small package: R200 set-up (other packages free). 3 month contract. Min Monthly fee: R100. In other words, it functions as a payment gateway, but with bank accounts instead of credit cards. It takes the buyer to their online internet banking account, where they log in, and POLi adds a "once off payment" page which they buyers uses to pay the seller. It then redirects back to the seller's site. Nice! Cost: 3.4% + R4 per transaction.
