Design a custom frontpage

Hello,

I need to design a site that has a frontpage with buttons that send the user to different "sites", for example:

1 button will go to Graphic Design and the other button will go to Judaic Art.

These button should open different pages that look as it these are two different sites.

I don't know how to create the different looks to all the pages.

I've created a frontpage cck, but how do I make it that each "site" has a different look?

For example, different picture in the header, different look to the menus etc.

The frontpage also has a button for About, how do I do it that the about page has a header with a background pic and the front page doesn't?

I'm using a zen subtheme and tried all kind of options like:

In my subtheme template.php file I wrote this:

function rrdesigns_regions() {
return array(
'content_top' => t('content top'),
'content_bottom' => t('content bottom'),
'footer' => t('footer'),
'closure_region' => t('closure'),
);
}

Still the header appeard.

Then, I tried something else, I copied the page.tpl.php file and saved it as front-page.tpl.php. In the file I commented the lines:
print $head; and all kind of other lines, nothing helps, any change I do in the front-page.tpl.php file doesn't reflect on the site.

The front-page.tpl.php is in the subtheme directory.

My default front page is pointing to /node, if I change it to I get: page not found.

So I have many questions, and very confused, so can someone point me to the right direction of how to deal with a design like the one I need?

Different design for frontpage and for "2" different sites.

Thanks,

Sigal

Local Programming Community

Hi All,

Over the past few months I have been digressing new (coding) languages and Google has been my new best friend.
I have stumbed across many international websites offering support and assistance to those who need it - many filled with South Africans. This made me wonder, are there any local programming communities that offer support and are active? Not many.

So, I decided I would create one, for South Africans, to bring together the vast talent in South Africa. It will be locally hosted (for those poor souls on local only bandwidth) and completely non profit. I ran a poll for about 3 weeks and spread it around in some local IRC channels. After 200 votes, the users had clearly decided on a domain name (which I have registered) and also liked the idea of using Drupal as a platform.

The plan is as follows:
-The site will consist of a blog type front page, where people can submit articles, which are then potentially approved by a staff member to appear on the front page.
-There will be forums where users can post polls and threads for assistance or just take part in general chatter/forum stuff.
-There will be a pastebin (http://drupal.org/project/geshifilter looks good)
-There will be a Projects page, very similar to the one found on Drupal.org - where users can register a locally developed, free/opensource project. Once their registration is accepted/complete, they will receive SVN/CVS space and a project page where bug tracking etc can happen. (Project* modules)

Those are some of my ideas and I would appreciate any more you may have.

This project is something I am taking very seriously and I assure you all it will not fail :D
Hopefully we can get some talented graphic designers to make backgrounds which can be distributed into universities and colleges where teachers use projecters. Maybe even sponsored printing to spread flyers.

Now, to be honest I had never heard of Drupal until someone I told my ideas to suggested it as the CMS platform - I checked it out and I like it very much, it is powerful and clean. What I need is someone who would like to contribute to the community and help me set everything up - maybe even become a 'staff member', with no pay that is :D - though I really don't think it would be TOO much work.

The site is disgraceful at the moment (lol) so I'd rather not give out the URL publically, but if you are willing to help, please drop me an e-mail on undefined.za@gmail.com!

Thank you all,

Portable web server

Hi again..

I have a scenario and i was wondering if anyone knows of a solution. ok...

I have 2 machines, Mac at the office and windows on a laptop, I want to be able to develop the same drupal website on both machines, i.e. work on it at the office and when i go home carry on working on it using the laptop. So i thought of some sort of usb webserver of sorts so that it takes the website and database wherever i go so I can continue working on it seamlessly and I am not sure if i want to work on it from online. Quicker on local machine.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

Rob

Morning Drupalz,

So with a bit of patience and a nudge from Mr. Headroom i had all the ubercart goodies, catalog and more up and running on my vamp install.
And then horror oh horror went back to edit the two pages i had made before installing panels and customizing my blue marine theme,flushed with sucsess i opened my home page and the following occurred :

warning: call_user_func_array() [function.call-user-func-array]: First argument is expected to be a valid callback, 'page_node_form' was given in C:\drupal\apps\drupal5\htdocs\includes\form.inc on line 218.

so i cannot edit my "pages" also the "create content" tab has disappeared ( i think this happens when i activate panels)

Have followed the various strings in the issues and forum pages but with out finding any constructive or for my limited ability understandable
it's that dang importer module

Hey ubercartersza!
Well i have been going through the standard learning curve of drupal and ubercart....
you know tears of frustration, manic laughter and whooping at sucsess and occasional hair pulling.But an exciting adventure none the less on the path from n00b to baffled.
So now i am attempting to get the import mod working.
i have installed the import module and the patch (i think) discovered what parsing a csv and xml is (kind of) but have the following ignorant issues.(also import node and node names)have read every string dating back to early '06 came across a little bit of insite at big robots site Eye-wink but still no real understanding
To create the xml do i just make columns in a spreadsheet with the name,category,sku etc as the column header and then export as csv to import into uber?( i did have a look at the xml file you posted but it is gobbledegeek to me and as my weekend past in a flash but with out the epiphany that normally comes from bashing my neurons against the ubercart wall for 24 hours i have been reduced to beg for enlightenment!
The other issue is that on trying to export product i am faced with the dred white screen!So i cannot check what uber is trying to export and work backwards as suggested in one of Lyle's posts.
I have searched high and low for an understandable explanation but to no avail.

I am using a 5.9 drup install on a bitnami stack
yours in ignorance
maaak

(sometimes things need to be believed before they are seen)

Urgent help with access control please

Hi all,

I need urgent help please, I don't know how, but I broke my access control.

When I am logged in as the admin, I can't do anything on the administration side. Every page that I open shows me only the description of the module but nothing else. For example, if I go to blocks, I don't see the actual blocks list. If I go to users, I don't see the users lists.

The login block is also gone, so when I logged out, I can't log back in again.

I think it has to do with me setting up the login block to be visible only to certain roles yesterday, now I don't know how to restore things back.

And I wanted to show the site to the client today, and now I'm seriously stuck.

Please can someone help?

Thank you,

View styling - help

Hi all,

T's me again ;)

I need help with styling my custom home page.

I have a block-view that I display on the page, but I want to style one of it's fields, for example, I want it to have blue background.

When I look at the views/theming information, I see this line: $data = $row->{$field->field_alias} but I'm not sure what does it mean.

My view is based on taxonomy terms and I want the term_name to be White text on Blue background.

I created a views-view--homecats.tpl.php file and I think I need to change this code section:

<?php
print $rows;
?>

But I can't figure out what to change it to.

print $row-> ????

Can someone please help?

Thanks and god bless,

Seems like a good starting point. What do you think?

XAMPP broke my laptop :(

Please help me... I just got my new shiny laptop, installed XAMPP and now I keep getting the error: Access violation at address 10009F40 in module 'LIBMYSQL.dll'. Read of address violation 00000000.

I can't do anything.

I googled it, and found that I need to remove the password and username from the my.ini file, but there are no username or password in the my.ini file.

I'm using Vista Home Basic, I tried to uninstall XAMPP and to reinstall and nothing helps.

Please, please, can someone help?

Do I need to format my laptop to get rid of this error?

Thanks,

Dynamic Drop down lists

Hi,

Is there a way to create a CCK list field that it's values depend on a different drop down list?

For example:

Drop down list one has fruit or vegetables in it.

Drop down list two will have either fruit or vegetables in it, depending on what was selected in the first drop down.

Thanks,

Web Enabler | Gist!

Hi There,

We are currently looking for someone who is experienced with Drupal (1-2 years) and has build Drupal based websites from scratch. You must also be able to customise themes to client specifications. The websites range from simple brochure websites to e-commerce sites, so your knowledge should include the workings of Ubercart of e-commerce.

You will also be responsible for the hosting and support areas of the web department.

You must be able to work by yourself and manage your own project schedules. There is also a fair degree of client training that you will be doing as many of our clients prefer to update their own websites. It will be to your advantage if you have a background in programming, preferably Php.

We are based in Bellville, Cape Town. If you are interested please send your CV to andre@gist.co.za

Thanks and good luck

eCommerce Fundi

Hi,

I've been trying eCommerce and Ubercart for the past couple of months and still have the same problem. As I'm importing over 4000 users from my previous site http://www.filmmaker.co.za to my new site http://www.filmcontact.com, I need to be able to manually set the subscribed, expiry date and role for each user.

at importing, all users automatically to be given authenticated role with an expiration date in 2011 (to show in their account 'order history') so that it is not empty .. or run a script to do that?

admin to access a field in 'edit user' or 'create a transaction' where I can manually add/edit the 'subscribed' and 'expiry' date and role. Using ec-role and ec-recurring modules. Need to be able to change their expiration dates as their memberships on filmmaker.co.za are expiring throughout the year.

This is rather urgent, and look so forward to any quotes. Please send to lilian@filmmaker.co.za

Selling the benefits of Drupal

Hi,

Me again :-)

We have done a website a long time ago for one of our clients in HTML only. Slowly the site is growing and to be honest it is becoming a pain for me to maintain, new content always requires me to go to code, create pages, upload them etc...

I want to get my client to upgrade the site to Drupal. However the problem is that the client doesn't see the benefit of moving, for him the current version is fine and doesn't see the need to spend money to upgrade.

Does anybody now any ways of selling the benefits or if there is any existing marketing and sales type kits? This way one could sell it to more business minded people who always want to see the monetary return on sales.

Thanks
Robin

Drupal Quote Calculations Module or capabilities

Hi All

I have 2 questions, but i will make the other one another discussion.

I would like to know if there is some sort of way to calculate quotes using drupal and if anybody has done something of this sort. My search has yielded no results and was wondering how one would do such a thing. Would one use a e-commerce plugin such as ubercart or would one need to do a custom development?

Any ideas?

Feedback wanted on the most recent Drupal Johannesburg meetup

Please could everyone who attended take a moment to share their opinions of the most recent Drupal Johannesburg meetup held on the 19th July 2008. The idea is to make each future event better than the last, but we can only do this if we know what you liked/disliked about any of the previous events. Use the comments of this post to share your feedback, and ideas. I created a short summary of the workshop here, for those that need a jogging of the mind.

Carl had some ideas about what to aim for in future meetups: "comprising a business section, skills development, and what’s current in Drupal". Roger thinks: "“Carl’s idea is a good one - to let this group be a practitioner group and we get to build stuff, learn from each other and acquire new skills. All in order to build towards a drupalcamp, I hope!”.

DHTML Menu in Drupal 5.8 - Sub menus doesn't open

Hi all,

I am trying to create a menu on my site with the dhtmlmenu module.

I added this function to my template.php:

function tapestry_menu_item_link($item, $link_item) {
$path = explode("#",$link_item['path']);
if($path[0])
return l($item['title'], $path[0], !empty($item['description']) ? array('title' => $item['description']) : array(), isset($item['query']) ? $item['query'] : NULL, $path[1]);
else
return ''.$item['title'].'';
}

And my parent items in the menu are pointing to: #.

When I click on a parent item, nothing happens and the sub menu does not open.

I googled, IRCed, and drupaled, but couldn't find a solution.

I used nicemenus in the beginning, but my client wants the sub menus to stay open when you click on their parent, she says it's hard to point on a sub menu since it keeps disappearing.

Can anyone help please?

Payment gateway choices in South Africa

So, you're a South African who's set up a drupal site and you want to sell stuff - and have your money put in a South African bank account. What are your payment gateway options?

Well, first off, you'll need to sign up for a merchant account at your local bank - who will want a business plan from you - and most banks charge you for the setup. Then you'll probably pay fees of around R100/month (?) for that account. The banks take between 5 and 7% per transaction ( ::sigh:: ). Then sign up with a payment gateway and you're ready to accept online transactions. The question is, which payment gateway?

I've only used Virtual Card Services (VCS) before, and the technical integration into a site is pretty simple. You'll pay R125/month for VCS privileges...and R1 + 0.5% per transaction. There's a module for ecommerce and one in the pipeline for ubercart.

I haven't used any other gateways. Some suggestions are:

PayPal (except if you're in SA they won't let you accept money. These guys reckon they've found a workaround involving somehow linking a Master Card to a PayPal account - although you'll have to buy the $6 ebook to find out how.) PayPal will charge you $30/month and 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction.

Authorize.net (who don't provide services directly to a client, but have a list of resellers who do. I referred a client to them, and after several months they were unsuccessful in getting an account - being in South Africa is apparently a problem.)

Worldpay - one of my clients used them (on an html site) with success. 200 pounds setup, 300 pounds per month, 4.5% per transaction.

Google tells me that some other options for South Africans are:

pricetag.co.za - R570 setup fee, R200/month, 5.7% per transaction

MWEB - R590 setup, R350/month, R5.70 per transaction

iVeri - couldn't find prices on their site

Setcom - no monthly fees (HOORAY!), 4.9% + R4 per transaction. R8/withdrawal. [update: casperl says he uses it for smaller volume sites]. Here's a good breakdown.

Paygate - [info from Max_headroom] - 4 packages. The Small package: R200 set-up (other packages free). 3 month contract. Min Monthly fee: R100. Per transaction: R1.00 + 0.5%.

MyGate - 2 options:

Express (no merchant account): R250 setup fee, R150 subscription fee (whatever *that* is?), you don't need to set up a merchant account, and there is no monthly fee. 6% per transaction.

Standard - R200 setup fee, no subscription fee, no % per transaction (the only guys who do this, it seems), R1.50 per transaction.

There's also MyGate 300 (R300/month, R1.50/transaction) and MyGate 600 (R600/month, R1.40/transaction) options.

[added] PayFast - not yet able to accept credit card transactions, but will in the last quarter of 2008 (according to an email I got from them today).

[added] AlertPay - someone directed me here, and they say they're compatible with SA bank accounts. No signup fee, 5% + R2.70 per transaction with no monthly fees. But users have had problems with them.

[added] Netcash - R120/month.

[added] Payment Express - costs are calculated on a sliding scale based on the number of monthly transactions. There's a setup fee of $50 or less, and $.50 per transaction, as well as monthly fees of at least $50. Integrates with most SA bank accounts.

[added] 2checkout - $49 to open the account, no monthly fee, 4.5% per transaction value. $10 for the transfer to the SA Bank Account, minimum release level of $300 (source)

[added] CCNow - $10 signup, 4.99% of gross sales plus $0.50 per transaction, monthly fees of $10 (unless you're selling more than $100/month). You *must* sell physical products.

[added] ClickandBuy - used by iTunes. Looks really good, but I couldn't find any pricing on their site.

[added] payment24.co.za - 2 options:

Credit Card Verification: once-off setup fee of R299, R129 monthly subscription, 6.9% credit card transaction fee, Payout Fee – First R5000 FREE - R15 per R1000 thereafter

Pay-As-You-Go Solution: once-off setup fee of R499, no monthly subscription, 7.5% credit card transaction fee plus R10 per order, Payout Fee R15 per R1000

[added] Workarounds:

Open an offshore account (via Barclays, for instance, or a Swiss account like Credit Suisse or UBS, or a UK account with LloydsTSB (see instructions)) and link that into PayPal. Then wire the money into SA.

Speak nicely to a friend overseas and get them to get a 'pay-as-you-go' credit card and link it into paypal.

Sign up with some payment processor which accept payments and then mails you the cheque periodically. Some people get paid via Google Adsense like this.

So, who's using what and which one would you recommend to someone wanting to accept credit card payments in South Africa? One thing is clear - we need a PayPal-like company here!

[update: apparently it's illegal to have a "donate" button on your site unless you're a registered non-profit in SA]
[update: you have to declare all money you receive online if you're a South African-based business. Otherwise SARS will hunt you down.]

[added] POLi is really interesting. It's licensed by Setcom and allows anyone with a South African bank account to pay you directly, except POLi ties it all together in a neatly integrated package. In other words, it functions as a payment gateway, but with bank accounts instead of credit cards. It takes the buyer to their online internet banking account, where they log in, and POLi adds a "once off payment" page which they buyers uses to pay the seller. It then redirects back to the seller's site. Nice! Cost: 3.4% + R4 per transaction. The drawback is that you'll need to install an ActiveX control in Internet Explorer...non-doze users, sorry. ::sigh:: See this comment for more info.

Add the site to favorites in Drupal 5.8

Hi,

Does anybody know how can I create a menu item to add the site to the browser's favorites?

Not to the site's nodes, but to the actual browser's favorite?

Thanks,

Changing layout of custom content type

Hi There

I've created a custom content type using CCK and all works (well, most of it) :o) I would like to know how difficult would it be to rearrange the content on the page?

For instance, instead of having all content underneath each other, I would like the text fields on the left of the page and the image on the right.

Also, is it possible to create one page with 2 or more instances of a content type on it, arranged of course?

Thanks in advance for all the assistance :o)

Need help with a complicated web site

Hi,

I am new to Drupal, and the first site I got to create is very complicated.

I need to create a form for capturing CV details.

The form has different sections like: skills / education / language etc.

The user should be able to save the form and come back to it later and continue filling it up.

The system should also show the user which parts where completed and which still need to be filled in.

The user should be able to edit/add/delete any content he captured in this form.

Can anyone help me with that?

Thank you,

Sigal

Developer | Filmmaker

Hi, I've been building for quite some time and just can't get my head around some code and would like to pay someone just to help me with the correct code for the following:

if the user is a Premium or Platinum member, can send private message to 'field_name' and if not a Premium or Platinum member, just print 'field_name' (and do not mention private message).

<?php print $node->field_name[0]['view'] ?> <?php if (user_access('access private messages') && (isset($user->privatemsg_allow) ? $user->privatemsg_allow : 1)) { ?>
<?php $frommetoprofileuser = arg(1); ?>
<?php print l(t('send a private message').$user->name, 'privatemsg/msgto/'. $frommetoprofileuser); ?>
</div>
<?php } ?>

VIEWS

I created a view which shows up on the tabs of the user (my account), as 'user/$arg/network/friends' works, but I would like the tab only to show for the user and not for anyone else.

In views, for the user to see only the content that relates to them, ie (url as 1. 'user/$arg/network/friends'} which is built with http://drupal.org/project/user_relationships (similar to buddylist), what is the argument or filter in the view that the user sees only the friends (buddies) that relate to them.

In a view from ecommerce, exactly the same as 3. Want the user to be able to see their membership role, payment made and expiration date. The expiration date has to be editable by admin.

In the same case as 2, i.o.w a tab in the user account, if they have video, show the video tab and everyone can see the video. If no video, no tab.

TEMPLATING

Would love a fundi to come take over the templating as I'm definitely no good at that. All the content exists, just need a 'look'. Specifically menu's.

IMPORT

Have all the members imported but have a article database (about 3000) in the format of your choice. The problem is the 'old' articles have a title, intro paragraph and rest of article. Don't know how to converge the intro paragraph and article together for import.

Please contact me at lilian@filmmaker.co.za or 083 316 1014 should you be interested and a quote for the all or any of the above.

New site is at http://www.ufilm.tv

Drupal Cape Town!

Good day, fellow Capetonian Drupalers

I am a Drupal web developer in Bellville and I am stoked to find that a group like this already exists, I would like to get much more involved in this project. I think that we should start making waves in the international Drupal community by organising our own Drupalcon in Cape Town.

But before we go ahead and jump the gun are there any regular meetings happening in Cape Town for us avid Drupalers? I have been cracking away at Drupal for about 1 year now and feel like I know enough to share some of my knowledge but at the same time would love to hear what you guys have to say.

Keep in touch.. find me on Skype if you are interested..

Hello World... About Me.

Iv been using Drupal for around 3-4 years (4 something was my first encounter) on and off but really started putting in the hours behind my mac for the last year now.

My best work to date is http://www.tickyboximages.co.za
A place for the media industry to buy images and local South African photographers to get their work out there, its a e-commerce site (COD unfortunately). Currently has 1000+ images, new images are uploaded daily.

My home page... not got any thing but contact form for now but a custom theme is near its end. http://www.jucallme.com a place to get some freelance work.

Oh, currently my day job is a java developer but im really enjoying drupal theming/development. Im currently looking for full-time employment in a drupal related roll, my resume will be on my home page shortly.

Reminder: Drupal Johannesburg Meetup this Saturday

Hi All. Just a reminder of the saturday drupal meetup at obsidian systems, at 13:00. Please bring whatever you want to drink, and if you're feeling peckish, some chips/snack.

Carl is going to be demoing some of the stuff his company is doing with drupal for ABSA, Samsung, Toyota, Converse, Hollard etc. I'll take a stab at showing the kind of sites I'm doing for NGO's, and try and demo the gmap module (google maps drupal integration).

If you have anything specific you'd like to showcase, let me know. In any case, there will be free time for anyone to demo anything cool. If we have time, we will also be showing the DrupalCon 2008 State of Drupal talk.

Please, if anyone who's coming lives anywhere near Melville, Tansy is looking for a lift. Contact me for her contact details.
