DC Doc sprint

As some of you may know, I've been neck-deep in Drupal's Doc team work. The doc sprints that we have had at the last two Drupalcons have been a ton of fun and very productive. I'd like to run a local sprint down in DC sometime before the end of the year. The basic idea that I am thinking right now is to find a location that will let us camp out with wifi for about 4-6 hours on a weekend. I'd be there the entire time but others could just drop by as they had time. I'd be there to help folks get situated, find docs tasks that they find interesting and generally answer questions.

I don't have a date/venue yet. This post is for two purposes right now:
1) gauge the interest to get a sense of the size of venue to find
2) see if anyone has space they would donate or recommendations of where we could go (I'm assuming in the 10-20 people range right now)

In terms of venue needs, the basic requirements would be chairs and tables/desks for people to work comfortably and free wifi access. I'd also like to be able to bring in snacks and drinks. Something that is easily accessible on metro would be great. That's about it really.

Note that you don't need to know how to write well to help with docs. We have tons of things that need help that don't involved writing at all. We even have coding work we need, so devs can play too. ;-) People who are new to Drupal or do not speak English as their first language are particularly valuable and highly encouraged.

So, please feel free to discuss, volunteer or ask questions to help me get a better sense of what to plan. This'll be my first time planning a stand-alone sprint like this so all thoughts and ideas are welcome. :-)

Changes to the venue, format, and topics of future NOVA meet-ups

Hi All, I wanted to share the results of the feedback we've received from the group about changes to the venue, format, and topics of future NOVA meet-ups.

After collecting a lot of feedback and having several discussions with our friends at WorthPoint, who organized our first meet-ups and have provided us with most of our topics and leadership to date, we have decided to try some new things. Going forward, we are entertaining the creation of two co-operating groups:

1) This group becomes more of traditional Drupal Meet-up format that focuses heavily on Drupal related technology and implementation topics.

2) A soon to be formed forum that will address "How Drupal meets the needs of companies from start up to Fortune 50". More on this second exciting development will be announced later this week by Marc and Andy.

Here are the proposed ideas. Please give us your feedback!

Venue

We have received a lot of feedback that the TeqCorner , while very amenable to a large formal presentation format, does not provide a fully accessible location for the current (or potential) membership of this group. Also, several people have advocated a more casual location that offers food/drink for sale on-site. We would like to make the following recommendations culled from group sentiment and now ask for more feedback:

* Suggest that meetings be held at a metro accessible location.
* Suggest that meetings happen in a more central location such as Arlington, which is central to DC & NOVA (i.e. Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Tysons)
* Suggest that meetings be held at a public location with food/drink.
* Suggest that meetings be held the first Wednesday of every month (to accommodate conflicts already identified).

A series of venues are being explored and contacted now along Wilson/Clarendon blvds on metro stops (i.e. Rosslyn Courthouse, Clarendon, and Ballston) We would like the next meeting to be held Wednesday, October 1st so this really should be nailed down soon!

Format

Format is critical to having a good meet up and our group clearly wants a balance between one large topic that lasts 1-2 hours and micro topics (of 5 minutes). Both formats have pros and cons, but we want to try something that balances the two for this particular group. There has been a lot of debate about the pressures of coming up with a single topic that can draw and hold the attention of a diverse group. Also, the pressure to make sure there always is a strong, well prepared topic changes the dynamic a bit and does hurt sustainability and group participation. The DC meet-ups have always countered these issues with lots of informal, very short topics usually of a very technical nature. We were hearing interest in something in between for the future. So here is an idea...

* Try to gather volunteer speakers in advance to cover 2 - 3 topics per event @ roughly 15-20 minutes per topic
* Each topic includes a short presentation (roughly 15 minutes) followed by Q&A (strongly encouraged)
* We rotate topics b/w ones that appeal to different audiences so no one sits through something that is too long and also not applicable (more on that below).

Topics

Again, we are seeking a balance that helps to grow this group (hopefully to several hundred this year) and to speak to the diversity of our group. We want to have a range of topics that will attract Current Drupal Users, Potential Drupal Adopters, Drupal Developers/Implementers, etc. This should be a place where these groups feel they can co-exist, collaborate, and learn from one another.

We got an idea from the way conferences are planned to try "tracks". Here is a proposal for those...

Track#1 - Use Case Topics

This track satisfies the users and potential adopters of the Drupal platform. They want to know what can be done with Drupal, what others have done, and have learned about best practices in implementation. Example topics of interest to this group might include ways to do things with Drupal such as:

* Using Drupal for Multi-site CMS's
* Using Drupal to Build Blogs
* Comparing Drupal to other alternative CMS's (Joomla, Plone, WordPress , etc.)
* Using Drupal to Build Social Collaborative Apps
* How non-tech users can be taught to easily use a CMS
* Syndication 101
* Successful ways to create community building around sites

Track #2 - Tech Topics

This track satisfies the developers on the Drupal platform. They want to know what can be done (technically) with Drupal, what others have developed, what modules to use, and how to make things work.

* Hot Modules - what we like to install and users love to use
* Searching in Drupal using Apache SOLR
* Web statistics and analysis for Drupal
* Tuning Drupal/LAMP for performance and scalability
* CiviCRM what is it and what can you do with it?
* Unit testing in PHP
* OO practices for PHP
* Javascript Tools & Scripts

Track #3 - Dev Process Topics

This track satisfies the professional implementers of the Drupal platform. They have concerns about how to make Drupal an efficient, scalable, secure, enterprise CMS platform that can be developed according to a professional methodology. They might be in the business of implementing sites using Drupal for other organizations or the CTO, CIO of a large organization relying on Drupal. Example topics of interest to this group might include:

* Iterative builds and development with Drupal
* Doing great site documentation for Drupal
* Content Conversion: Moving legacy data to Drupal
* Project management best practices
* Creating UI for Drupal using wire framing
* Lessons learned from recent projects
* Testing and quality assurance processes
* High-level architecture modeling

Again, we are eager hear your thoughts and ideas and really want to improve our membership through the best possible topics/participants we can attract.

Set the strategy for web development projects. You will be taking part in developing proposals and budgets and working closely with other players in the delivery process to ensure a common understanding of goals and requirements.

Interact with clients to analyze requirements and ensure the delivery of optimal solutions. The idea is to validate our approach through thoughtful, timely production of project materials, which includes conceptualizing and developing user experience plans including taxonomies, site mapping, information architecture and wireframes.

Identify, understand and exploit innovations and new technologies to enhance Trellon's solutions. Basically, we want you to be aware of what is going on and speak up when you see opportunities for us to improve the kinds of solutions we deliver.

Take responsibility for the ongoing development of Trellon.com through contributions of original material about the company, our solutions, and our activities as a company. This includes managing contributions to the company blog, creating original materials for the website at the direction of company leadership, analyzing web metrics and recommending strategies for new development.

Who We Are Looking For

The proposals, strategy and tactics we deliver are a big part of what distinguishes Trellon from other firms out there. There are some characteristics we are looking for on the part of our Internet strategists:

Knowledge of common strategies and tactics in Web 2.0, social media and open source technology. Our clients are primarily non-profits and it is important to understand how groups are using technology to advance their organizational missions (and why they would want to). This includes being knowledgeable about other common technology platforms such as DIA, Kintera, Joomla, Ning, etc.

Strong reading and writing skills, and the ability to execute in a timely fashion. Your technical writing skills are not as important as being able to pick up on what a project is really all about and thoughtfully put together a plan to address it that tells the story about why this approach will be successful. The word 'boilerplate' makes us antsy.

The ability to interact with clients in the collection of requirements, review of staged deliverables, modification of scope, and ongoing discussions about project strategy. New challenges inevitably arise during the delivery process, and Internet Strategists are changed with understanding how it all fits together.

The ability to interact directly with affiliated communities through the publication of blogs and other content on Trellon.com as well as attendance at various community events. Internet Strategists at Trellon are expected to maintain a high profile and be conversant in a variety of subjects.

The ability to work without direct supervision, to make use of automated project management tools, to diligently record your hours in the timekeeping system, and to keep others aware of your schedule for planning purposes.

We will give special consideration to people with the following:

Demonstrated ongoing expertise in social media and open source. If you keep a blog, run workshops, attend industry events, or otherwise participate in the industry in a big, visible way, we want to talk to you.

Experience running a large social media website for a non-profit or online publisher. Many of our best ideas are based on years of experience working with clients and helping them through the challenges they encounter day-to-day.

Public speaking and presentation skills. While this is not a marketing position, an ideal candidate is someone who actively participates in the open source community on behalf of the company.

Why People Like to Work at Trellon

Trellon does things a little different from other companies...

You work from home on your own schedule. Trellon is a virtual company, there's no boss looking over your shoulder telling you to turn off Oprah.

You get to make the world a nicer place. Our clients include non-profits and other worthwhile organizations who are looking to do all sorts of great things.

You get to learn something new. We have a fantastic team of smart people, all of whom enjoy sharing their knowledge, and our projects tend to be cutting edge affairs that involve unique, sophisticated technology challenges.

You get to attend community events throughout North America and Europe to talk about your great ideas. We find lots of ways to help people stay at the top of their game.

How to Apply

Please direct all inquiries to jobs@trellon.com. Please include a cover letter, resume, and statement of salary requirements.

Who We Are

Trellon is an Internet strategy and development firm specializing in advanced web 2.0 and social media solutions that include web portals, desktop widgets, facebook applications, mobile applications, CRM systems and strategic consulting solutions. Our solutions take the form of content management systems, online communities, contact management applications, social networks, e-commerce portals, and specialized 'niche' applications.

Trellon has built a reputation for delivering robust solutions on tight timeframes. We help groups align their social media strategies with their organizational goals, articulate the plan for how to achieve optimal results, and deliver cost effective, sustainable solutions on open platforms. Founded in 2004, we have deployed a whopping 200+ web sites over the past 4.5 years, ranging in size from small regional concerns to high traffic, national web presences. Our clients include non-profits, NGOs, political campaigns, socially responsible commercial concerns, and media.

Trellon has a strong history in the open source and social media communities. The founders were key players in the Draft Clark movement and Clark for President campaign, online efforts to elect a presidential candidate primarily leveraging the Internet for support. We developed advanced social media strategies to engage millions of grassroots supporters nationwide and still draw from these experiences in every project we deliver. Trellon has a tradition of giving back to the communities we serve, and devotes over 10% of company development time each month contributing back to the Drupal and CiviCRM platforms through patches, code releases, publications, evangelism, webinars, and direct support of new users.

In terms of corporate philosophy, Trellon believes in the immense value of open source software and open standards. Nothing is worse than being locked into a particular platform primarily designed to protect a business model instead of engaging in true innovation. Portable information that can be consumed by multiple devices independent of platform and flexible, extensible methods for publishing / accessing content offer better solutions for the way people use technology today. These characteristic features of open systems provide the basis for building an economy of knowledge, allowing people and systems to 'talk' in unique and meaningful ways while building value through their interactions. Our work as a company is an expression of this philosophy.

September Meeting

I hope everyone has enjoyed their summer as it comes to a close. Time, especially during the summer months, has a way of flying by. Its already time for our September meetup.

Its been an especially busy and exciting month at WorthPoint with three major events capturing our time and attention in the IT department:

We teamed up with the American Presidential Experience by co-sponsoring a booth at the Democratic National Convention. This was a highly successful event that presented us with our highest site usage to date.

WorthPoint announced it's plans to acquire GoAntiques. Like any acquisition it entails a massive amount of planning on both ends to integrate platforms, memberships, databases and all the other details that crop up.

Heritage Auction Galleries, the world's largest collectibles auctioneer and third-largest auction house, announced that they have selected WorthPoint as a data-publishing partner.

To get to the point though (sorry, I didn't mean to create a WorthPoint press release here :D ), as you can see we've been swamped in August and let this week sneak up on us. We have not been able to coordinate or plan a presentation for this month's meeting.

If anyone would like to offer a presentation then please let me know and we'll do what we can to assist. We can try to get space at TeqCorner for Tuesday but it may not be the large conference room.

If no one responds then we'll see you in October.

Thanks,
Marc....

The New America Foundation (www.newamerica.net) is seeking a new media professional with 4-8 years experience to help improve and expand our online presence.

This is not a Drupal developer job, or a webmaster position with a different title -- what we need is a smart power user who's comfortable with Drupal, and wouldn't mind learning more.

The ideal candidate will have a love of both journalism and online innovation, and be keenly interested in politics and public policy. If you have a sharp eye for news, an innate feel for what works on the web today, and the desire to work closely with talented colleagues across a wide range of issue areas, we’d like to talk to you.

Primary Responsibilities

Overseeing day-to-day editorial operations of NewAmerica.net, which includes a rapidly growing array of issue-specific blogs;

Ensuring that the NewAmerica.net homepage is consistently current and compelling;

Coordinating with and coaching colleagues throughout the organization on issue- and program-specific new media projects;

Managing multiple longer-term projects, both internally and with outside partners and developers;

Helping to raise the online visibility of New America;

Encouraging active online participation, among both colleagues and outside audiences; and

Helping to identify opportunities for innovation, and chart New America’s online strategy for 2009 and beyond.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree is required;

4-8 years of professional online editorial experience;

Strong writing skills, particularly for blogs and other online media;

Stellar editing skills, including a thorough knowledge of AP style;

Solid grasp of HTML and basic CSS, understanding of web design and usability;

Proven record of deadline performance and ability to work without close supervision;

Exemplary attention to detail and an energetic, team-player attitude; and

Experience with web video, basic PHP and/or Drupal-based websites is ideal but not required.

This is a full-time position, based in our Washington DC offices.

Application Process

E-mail a resume, cover letter and links to online work samples to: Human Resources, New America Foundation, 1630 Connecticut Avenue, NW, 7th Floor, Washington, DC 20009. Fax: 202-986-3696. E-mail: jobs@newamerica.net. Please state “Managing Editor, NewAmerica.net” in the e-mail subject line. No phone calls, please.

Generous salary package commensurate with experience; excellent benefits. The New America Foundation is an equal opportunity employer.

July meeting topic?

We have the TeqCorner space reserved for a meeting on July 8 6PM EDT - 8PM EDT.

Does anybody have any preferences for topic? Format? Agenda?

If we decide to stick with "the first hour is one presenter going deep on a topic" format, the presenter does not have to be local. I thought the presentation by Jeff Whatcott was quite interesting, and we can undoubtedly find other non-local folks to WebEx into the meeting.

Your thoughts?

Description:

MySQL replication, load balancing web servers, Quercus, content delivery networks, memcached, and squid - there are currently a lot of moving parts when scaling a Drupal site to 1,000,000+ dynamic page views a day.
And on the eve of returning to China to iron out the logistic details, I would like to point you to http://www.china-osl.com and watch the Flash-video, which captures in essence, our message, spirit and goal of our ChinaOpen initiative.

In short, this summer, for 2-months, we will round up 50-200 Chinese students to work on Open-Source projects from worldwide. Currently in two tracks:
1. Drupal, and
2. Adobe – ColdFusion, Flex and AIR

While the web-site is NOT complete, that it really is a “Development snapshot” (with Drupal/Flex), that the details such as how to submit an idea, and “legal terms” as well as the schedule is not even finished. I would like you: my friends, colleagues and acquaintances, to help me get the words out there, so that you can understand what we are up to – and hopefully through you, we can get various ideas/projects prepared for the students to work on.

I will be back in 4-weeks, at which time we will blow the roofs off via a developer conference in the Washington DC Convention Center for which we are sponsoring, under the ChinaOpen logo, (probably) complete with Chinese lion-dancing.

Let’s work together to change China, for the better.

Kind regards,
John Zhu

Module Rating and Review Service

One of the topics being discussed in a side group last night involved the hope for a site that performed ratings of existing modules which could guide Drupalers to getting what they need in a shorter period of time.

I remembered running across the below site a short time ago, which is described as being a community-powered rating and review service dedicated to helping people to find the best Drupal modules for their projects.

John Forsythe made the announcement earlier this year.

The Drupal Modules site can be found at the following location:

http://drupalmodules.com/

Enjoy.

How can China be of services to Drupal -- practically?

We have been pondering about how to best evangelize China into the Drupal community -- and in droves.

After operating in China for two years, and despite of our best trying such as holding the Drupal BootCamp event in Beijing http://www.drupalchina.org/node/3638, our biggest challenge is the practicality of getting Chinese acquainted with Drupal -- BEFORE we can even talk about having them participate into the DROP program, let alone directly contribute into module or theme writing.

Meanwhile, after our Boston DrupalCon session http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/session/drupal-china-how-who-and-why, we were in London for CFUnited Europe http://europe.cfunited.com/, during which we shared our thinking to run a two months long, 50-100 college-students, China Open-Source Summer-Camp (ChinaOpen), in Beijing this summer with excitement built around the sites and sound of the 2008 Olympics.

Within the first two hours, we received 7 Open-Source projects to work on.

That was 1-month ago. And we have been contemplating about how this ChinaOpen can be of direct service to the Drupal community ever since.

Our latest epiphany/idea is to solicit ideas/projects to build web-sites for the non-profit community -- this summer -- in order to “graduate” the ChinaOpen participants into the DROP/SoC program, (say) next summer and give back to a few deserving organizations that need to get the word out but don't have the budget or resources. We imagine some participants may even be able to directly contribute to writing Drupal modules after this.

We could obviously open to For-Profit (kind of like the old “dotcom”) style web-sites/ideas, but we figure this would open the flood-gate too much.

What do you think?

Ideas, suggestions, critics, helping out?

Finally, we are trying to decide, whether this ChinaOpen should be pursued forward this summer, since logistically speaking, we are rapidly approaching the absolute deadline time to get the words out, and arrange all the logistic issues as May will be here in 2-weeks -- which is our other way to ask, for those of you who have participated either DROP or SoC before:
-- What kind of general rule-of-thumb in terms of operational-support that we should estimate?
-- For example, for each student, how much "mentoring" and backoffice support that we would need to factor?

Thanks!

SoC 2008
