This month will be more of a discussion than presentation... The general topic is local development environment / setup. Some of the issues we can talk about include:

* How do you handle Development / Testing / Production environments?
* Best practices / personal preferences for version control (if at all)?
* Text editor / IDE choice (advantages)?
* Development tips & tricks (modules, firefox extensions, etc)...
* Any other questions or ideas?

Tutorial for setting up a Drupal 6 site on Amazon EC2

I just completed a tutorial for running Drupal 6 on Amazon's EC2 at http://www.sunsetlakesoftware.com/2008/09/13/running-drupal-website-amaz... . With the advent of the persistent storage that Amazon's Elastic Block Store provides, I figured that it was finally practical to operate a website out of EC2.

My site at www.sunsetlakesoftware.com has been running off of EC2 for two weeks now and I couldn't be happier with the performance. I migrated over from Media Temple's Grid-Service because I couldn't stand the slow MySQL performance I was getting from that hosting option. EC2 is more expensive (~$72 / month vs. $40 / month), but the performance and unique features (incremental snapshot backups stored on S3, the ability to create clones of your site to play with in minutes, etc.) seem to be well worth it to me. This is also a very scalable option if you anticipate sudden traffic spikes.

I apologize for the length of the writeup, but I wanted to be thorough.

August Drupal Meetup (Madison)

We're meeting early this month...

Neil's giving a talk on Developing for CCK. Here's what he has to say:

CCK has become the preferred way to create new node types in Drupal. Instead of writing node modules, Drupal developers are now writing field modules to be used to build the nodes they need. This discussion will cover the basics of the CCK Field API for Drupal 5 and discuss the Drupal Form API. We will walk through a simple field module and cover some of the resources that are available for CCK development. While this discussion is focused on CCK for Drupal 5, the basics about the CCK framework can be applied to Drupal 6. CCK in Drupal 6 has undergone some changes which will be touched on briefly if we have time.

We'll meet at the usual place, Netconcepts: 2820 Walton Commons

RSVP here, or on Meetup

Can I use Drupal for my new site?

I have been hired to replace an existing website. It currently is built with dreamweaver and lasso. I want to replace it with a Drupal site. I need it to have the following:

Easy user interface for adding entries to databases for events, publications, downloads.
Reliable search function which can find pages, downloads, buyable documents.
E-commerce with existing vendors (ViaKlix, DoIT)
Multi language - the whole site needs to be in English, Spanish, and Chineses. Certain pages need to be in Russian, French, and Portugese.

Future needs include interactive video and password protected sections.

The current site is at:
http://babcock.cals.wisc.edu/

I have looked through the Drupal FAQ forums and made a couple of posts to the forums but have heard no replies. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Dave

July Drupal Meetup

This month, by popular demand, we'll cover beginning module development.

We'll follow the usual format, and meet at NetConcepts: 2820 Walton Commons West

6-7 Come to show off you project, ask and answer questions, share tips and tricks
7-8 Presentation

If you've got any relatively straightforward module ideas post them here, or shoot me an email. Right now I'm leaning towards building something that uses the Form API and AHAH (or AJAX).

Site writeup and Drupal 6 theme from talk

At the June Madison Drupal meetup, I promised to post a little writeup on my site along with the CSS and PHP code for the custom theme I showed off. I finally got around to posting that information at http://www.sunsetlakesoftware.com/2008/06/21/architecture-site . The theme is attached to the post, but it is a Zen subtheme, so you'll need the Zen theme installed on your Drupal 6 site to use it.

Sorry for not posting this under the meeting topic, I thought it might get buried under there.

Drupal 5/6 WYSIWYG Editors with Image uploaders (Madison)

This came up toward the end of yesterday's meeting so I thought I would post these links:

http://drupal.org/project/tinymce

http://drupal.org/project/fckeditor

http://drupal.org/project/imce

I think TinyMCE is one of the most popular JavaScript WYSIWYG editors in Drupal. FCKEditor is an alternative to TinyMCE and I like it a little better because it is a little easier to configure. It also has its own file upload manager built in, but IMCE integrates a little better with Drupal's role system.

IMCE is a file upload manager that automatically integrates with the "Insert Image" buttons in both FCKEditor and TinyMCE. IMCE can be configured with roles so that users can only access images they upload. It looks like all these modules have Drupal 6 versions, so this may be a nice user-friendly way to insert images into nodes until the ImageField module is released for 6.

Topic Suggestion

Blake and All --

I'd be interested in learning the basics of module creation at a future Drupal users group meeting. I know basic PHP, not sure if I know enough to write my own mod, but I've had to modify Drupal code in the past and done so successfully.

My ultimate goal is to write a mod as described here for my Kitty-Cam site. I just have no idea of how to hook into Drupal and although I can surround myself with books, I think I do best in a group learning environment (sort of my motivation for taking a PHP/MySql class at MATC -- I was just never successful at learning it on my own).

Is anyone able to lead such a talk and is there interest in hearing this topic?

Kris

Best practice for creating user profiles

Looking for D6 advice, from what I can figure out, there are three options (probably more)

User management-Profile (add fields)

Create Content - Profile as content

CCK

I want to create a site that has two main users: Volunteers and Organizations - so I've set up these two roles now I want to create two profile types, one for each role. How/Where should I create my extra fields so that they are available on registration, editable by the user and searchable.

Help - new drupalee wannabe

New to Drupal in Madison

Guys,
We're an online media startup in Madison and we're thinking about using Drupal for our CMS on our social networking site. We're all new to Drupal here and are wondering if anyone can get together for an introduction to it.

BarCamp Chippewa

A few of us up here in Northwestern Wisconsin are trying to get together the first-ever Western Wisconsin BarCamp. We're in the early organizing phases - meaning mostly we're mulling it over and looking for a time and place. Of course, the BarCamp will feature lots of Drupal love.
So - at the moment I'm crying out for people who are interested in participating, planning, sponsoring, or otherwise being involved in a BarCamp in the Eau Claire/Menomonie/Chippewa Falls area. If you are, please be in touch with me, or leave a comment below. We have a mailing list, and of course the mandatory wiki page at barcamp.org.

Also - we'll be looking for people to talk at the camp, of course, and - did I mention sponsoring?? Oh yeah, guess I did.

DrupalBootCamp UIUC Feedback

I thought I'd create this thread as a place to put feedback about DrupalBootCamp UIUC and see what that will mean for our May BU DrupalBootCamp.

This first one comes from one of our IT staff that visited the morning sessions:

---
I thought the UIUC Drupal event was very informative. I liked that each speaker had a short stint on their topic, and things moved along at a good pace. Starting off with your presentation provided a nice segue into the rest of the morning topics.
I was also quite impressed with some of the sites shown later, both in design and content. The judicial site that Brian showed really opened my eyes to the power of Drupal when it comes to tying data together in different ways. Too bad we didn’t see something like that when we were shopping for editorial front end systems for newpapers at my last job!

The sites that Brandon (I think) showed were great to display what can be done graphically to move away from a basic Drupal template.

You made a good point that once you learn Drupal, you can’t unlearn it, and go back to help others. It’s frustrating to be at the other end of things, trying to learn and get up to speed, but after attending the conference, I have much more respect for what can be done once one gets past the learning curve, and more desire to get to that point.
April Drupal Meetup (Madison)

After a month off, we're bringing the Drupal meetup back.

I'll come ready to talk about sessions and tricks learned at DrupalCon Boston, but I'd rather spend our time sharing our work.

If you're already working on a Drupal site, show it off.
If you're stuck on a particularly tough problem ask the group.

We'll start sharing at 6. If we don't run out of time I'm willing to talk about DrupalCon. Take a look at the session list to see if there's anything you're especially interested in (http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/sessions)

Drupal Table at Flourish Conference April 4th and 5th?

The Flourish conference is next weekend (April 4th and 5th), and it seems like a logical place to do some Drupal marketing.

It looks like we'd still be able to get a table.

Are there other folks planning on attending that would be up for setting up a marketing table?

There's also a Web Framework throwdown, although I see someone beat to that post...

From their website:

The goal of the Flourish Conference is to promote the use and adoption of Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) by demonstrating the practical applications of FLOSS in the business and academic world. While everyone is familiar with businesses that focus on creating non-free proprietary software, the same cannot be said for those who specialize in developing and supporting FLOSS software, and an Open Culture. By attending Flourish, you will get an opportunity to see how using, creating, and supporting FLOSS software can enhance your career, your business, and academic aspirations. Come and Flourish!

Flourish 2008 will feature influential and technical speakers, social events, an exhibition area, a development competition and more. Attendees will have the opportunity to network and socialize with the Chicago open source community as well as people from other areas of the country. This year we are expecting about 400 attendees. We are hoping that you can be one of them.

We hope to see you there at the Flourish 2008 Conference on April 4th and 5th at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

Need at least 3 tracks at any Camp

Thanks everyone for making DrupalcampWisconsin a reality!

I was only able to attend for a couple of hours, but really enjoyed what I got to absorb.

The one thing that I noticed that I wanted to share is that DC-WI didn't have much Barcamp in it. It felt a lot more seminar-y. I'd recommend for future events (for all Camps) always having at least 3 camps. Having just the 2 gave the event a sort of Us-Them or Two-Party-System kind of feel. A third would add more of an element of surprise. I also like very much how at barcamps you always feel like you're missing something since there is so much going on - This makes people want more because they always feel like they missed something.

Overall it was great but I think it was a little heavy on the structure. A third track would have helped. I would have enjoyed doing a "okay, lets make a site" session (or three), which would have probably helped a lot of people (newbs at least) by prompting them to ask questions related to their own creative sitebuilding thoughts instead of being topic-centric. (yes yes, i know, then why didnt I do it. I was on a limited schedule)

Looking forward to BarCampMadison,

-Jonathan

Theme for RMH site | Rogers Memorial Hosptial

We need a themer who can create something for our Drupal site when we relaunch. THe deadline, as always, is ASAP, but realistically, you'll have at least four weeks to get this project done. We've done all the work of moving the data over, we simply need a theme with two major pages. The old site is at www.rogershospital.org.

Struggling With Podcasting

I've been trying to get a podcasting system set up at Writelarge.com, because I'd like to dust off my podcast and start reading my stories again.

Drupal kind of rocks for Podcasting. The software to upload and include a local or remote file in your RSS feed is pretty much handled all in the background, which is very nice if you're writing to a feed.

But I'd also like my site to show a flash player on the main page with each post, too.The audio module does that quite well (if your file is encoded at the right sample rate). But an audio post isn't as robust as a Blog post. It doesn't cross post to LiveJournal, for example.

And the Audio post doesn't have nearly as nice of taxonomy control as a blog post. Maybe It's a configuration thing, but I can't seem to figure out how to embed the flash player in a blog post. I understand that I can attach a file here, and it'll link to it at the bottom of the post, but I really want more control. And if I want tweak the color of the player, I have to manually edit the php! I don't mind that, but it's not very user friendly. The podcasting plugins in WordPress were better.

If I can figure this out, and also recall how I did it after the fact, I've got my DrupalCampMilwaukee session planned.

DoIT tech classes of interest to UW-Madison Drupalists

I probably can't attend any of these (I work for UW, but live in Oakland, CA), but people interested in spreading Drupal at UW-Madison could go to some of these to participate and advocate. Here's what DoIT's recent email says about the classes:

The start of a new year is a great time to learn new software skills or take your current skills to the next level. DoIT's Professional Technical Education program is offering dozens of affordable classes to UW employees and their family members, State employees and the community at-large this spring. The classes below are grouped into courses in January, free brownbag sessions, new courses and courses by category.

Registration is required for all courses, except the free brownbag sessions. You can register online at wisc.edu/pte, by email to classes@doit.wisc.edu or by phone at (608) 262-3605.
Drupal, YUI, and custom themeing

I have a site built on PHP and around YUI (Yahoo User Interface). I currently only use YUI to layout my CSS structures (floated column layouts) and would like to implement Drupal 5.3 (PHPTemplate) with these modules: blog, forum, contact, comments, aggregator, menu, path, and search (among others).

Here's my site as it sits right now: http://networkedinsights.com

Some info on my site:

There are 3 different layouts used: 1-col, 2-col, and 3 col

Each layout has the same header and footer

The homepage uses a slightly modified 2-col layout

The main nav is a ul

The secondary nav is also a ul and is nested within the primary nav

Both primary and secondary nav bars are placed in the header (tabs that are floated right)

The 2-col layout is the most common layout using a 75/25 distribution (the 25'er is my right-column)

I will convert my current product help pages into Drupal's forum module

I will also have a "News" section which will "stick" the top 3 News articles to the homepage

I will also have a "Blog" section which will also "stick" the top 3 Blog entries to the homepage

All other pages of my site will be static

I'd like to keep YUI in place as this CSS/xHTML framework does a great job of supporting browser rendering bugs for floated column layouts

My questions are as follows:

Should I build my new theme on an existing theme like Zen or should I start from scratch?

How to I set up and present the "Navigation" block for authorized users (viewing 1 and 3 column layouts)?

I would also like to use my new theme for the admin pages?

I display several, reusable pieces of content in my right-column ... how should I pull these chunks of HTML into Drupal?

In my 3-column layout, I don't have a body or a sidebar, how would I build this page-3-col.tpl.php?

Speaking of page.tpl.php ... should I write one robust page.tpl.php to handle all 3 layouts, or should each layout get it's own page.tpl.php?

I probably forgot to mention something so please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks in advance for the help.

_rs

This position is located in New York City. We will pay relocation expenses for the right candidate.

Inc.com and FastCompany.com, two of the fastest-growing and most prominent business web sites in the U.S., have a position open on their technology staff. We are looking for a senior candidate who has extensive experience with the Drupal content management platform.

Ultimately you will function as our lead developer on this platform following that release.

THIS IS A FULLTIME DEVELOPER POSITION ONLY. FREELANCERS, PART-TIMERS, AND THEMERS NEED NOT APPLY.

Inc.com and FastCompany.com are part of Mansueto Digital, a division of Mansueto Ventures, a growing company focused on four core initiatives: recruit and retain top talent; invest in our properties; practice open book management; and diversify editorial content in our consumer magazines, online and through our Events and Business Resources Group. We are a company that values our customers and employees equally and we are committed to helping them manage and improve the quality of their lives everyday.

Drupal Designer, Customization, Developer | MasonicReferral

Building a site of referral services for a charity/social organization.

I’ll be using Drupal 5.1.
I believe that most everything can be done with the existing modules:
Subscribed, IM_Paypal, Fivestar or Jrating, Advertisment, Classified Ads, Job Search, Survey.

Also think I could get by with one of the available themes.

Site only needs one module complete to go live. Other modules/services will be added after.

Looking for contractor. Not a full time position.

Contact me at mark.bisaillon@masonicreferral.com or 630-839-9017 to learn more and to provide a quote.

Madison Drupal Meetup with dww at Union South

I'll be back in Madison again from 2007-04-24 through 2007-05-05 for work (http://www.cs.wisc.edu/condor/PCW2007 for the interested reader). I'll be fairly busy during the week of 04-30 to 05-04, but perhaps the thursday after i get there (04-26) would be a good night for an informal Drupal meet-up. anyone interested? please comment here so we can decide a) if it's worth doing and b) how big a space we'd need. also, if it'd be better at a different time or potentially day, just let me know.

UPDATE: Sounds like it's not going to be an overwhelming turn-out, but even to get together for a little while seems like a good idea. However, something came up and I have to be somewhere by 8pm, so I'm moving this up from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, instead of 7:00pm to 8:30pm as originally posted. In terms of a location, let's just meet near the "TITU" (Today in the Union) board at Union South -- we can find an appropriate spot based on how many of us are there.

Thanks,
Drupal Camp Wisconsin

There was quite the demand for Drupal at both BarCampMilwaukee and BarCampMadison. A couple of us are getting together to start planning a Drupal Camp. I've set up a drupal wiki (from an installation profile, total install time 15 minutes -- due to a slow shared host database server) at http://drupalcamp.blakehall.org

We're still in the VERY early stages of planning so we don't have details (like a date) yet.

If you're interested in helping plan feel free to post links, session ideas, etc...

Drupal meet up Madison this week?

hi folks,

i'm in Madison this week for my day job (believe it or not, i'm academic staff at UW-Madison in the computer science department, even though i live in Oakland, CA). i was thinking it might be fun to try to throw together a drupal meet-up of some sort while i'm here. maybe wednesday 2006-12-13 after work? i don't know if there's a standard place where madison meetups have happened in the past... we could certainly do it on campus somewhere (especially easy for me if we did it in the CS department, or union south, etc). or, we could hit a coffee shop or something (i think y'all met at cafe assisi once before, if memory serves me right -- i played a few gigs there when i still lived out here grin).

i'd be happy to chat about the new release system, project.module stuff, etc. i could also talk about event management and my plans for the signup module (which i also maintain). we could also talk about the drupal sites i'm building in the CS department at UW. personally, i'd be happy to just meet other madison drupalistas, find out who you are, what you're using drupal for, etc, etc...

sorry for the short notice, but this trip kind of came out of no where, and it just occured to me on the flight here that i should post something to this group and see if anyone's up for a meeting.

please comment here ASAP so we can figure out if it's worth making an event for it.

thanks!

Someone contacted me about the idea of having some Drupal stuff go on at Barcamp Milwaukee. I can't guarantee my presence but i'm currently considering it... Might be a good time to meet up.

From http://barcampmilwaukee.com/:

"BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. BarCampMilwaukee is a 24+ hour tech-focused event."

Milwaukee Meeting at Potbelly's

Erich and I plan to meet next week at Potbelly's sandwich shop (at 161 W Wisconsin Ave), to discuss Drupal 4.6/4.7 configuration and setup, CCK, theme overrides, and custom themes.

We know very little about all these subjects, but we will combine our ignorance into something truly amazing.

Come join us, and we can add your knowledge, introduce ourselves, and broaden the scope of the meeting to include any topic you care to bring up.

I'm trying to start up a group of webmasters, bloggers, etc. in Wisconsin that is dedicated to progressive politics. If anyone is interested in joining such a group, please let me know. Our first activity will be to have a booth at Fighting Bob Fest next month.

Anyone from Milwaukee with some time on their hands?

I am extremely new to Drupal and am more or less just fooling around with some stuff trying to make my first web page. I was wondering if anyone in the Milwaukee area would be willing to get together and show me some of the ropes. I would love to buy this person a meal and some drinks for their time. If anyone is willing, please email me at yonderboy23@gmail.com

Thanks!

Report back from Wisconsin Drupal Meeting 1; mini-DrupalCamp at Social Forum?

Blake from DANEnet, Patricia and Sheldon from Center for Media and Democracy and myself (from Midwest Social Forum) met for about 2 hours at Michelangelo's. We spent much of the time introducing ourselves and our various projects, and got into some details about various modules and implementations we're dealing with. Apparently we're all fans of the mapping modules....

We actually spent most of the time talking about the Midwest Social Forum (new Drupal site that went live yesterday!). Initially, i brought up the idea of working with other folks to put together a workshop on social software, which would present Drupal along with some other tools out there that community orgs and social movements can make use of. The current proposal for that is located here: http://www.mwsocialforum.org/node/511.

Then, someone proposed using the Forum as a meeting place for a mini Drupal Camp that could draw from Chicago, Iowa, and maybe further. People felt that we might be able to get out 20-30 people, even with only six weeks' notice, especially if we can get some Core developers (Zack Rosen has already suggested he can make it).

I suggested that Thursday July 6 would be a good day, since it is set aside for retreats and caucuses (for example, there is one about water privatization, and another about youth organizing).

I can arrange to get a room or two set aside with overhead projectors for all day Thursday. However, since i am one of the few staff organizers of the Midwest Social Forum, i will be running around like mad dealing with logistical issues with the rest of the Forum, so i might only be able to attend half of the Drupal Camp, and i can't really take on the promotion of it.

I suggest we use this thread to discuss:

Whether we want to make this happen or not

What goals a miniDrupalCamp would achieve (i know very little about other Drupa lCamps)

Who wants to do what.

Technical capabilities of groups.drupal.org

When you login as a regular member, what are you allowed to do: "create poll", "create story", "create event", etc.?

Any bugs, glitches, or missing features you notice?

I'm asking, so I know how heavily each member has to rely on the manager to do things vs. doing them on their own.
