Drupal Midlands Meeting - Sept 26

Venue: http://tinyurl.com/trilbymap

Cost: £2 per person (includes wifi + coffee/tea/cold drinks)

This is the first such meeting that I know of in the Birmingham area so we're finding our feet. The idea came about during a conference at IlluminateICT.

It's a completely open meeting, no experience with Drupal necessary. For the obsessive Drupalistas, bring your partners so that you can prove that you're not the only one. :-)

Developer | WWOOF UK (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms)

Here is a request for proposals for a project to create an online database and website for WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) UK.

Feel free to submit a proposal for this project and get in contact with any questions, recommendations and suggestions. If you know of anywhere else we could publicise this, then feel free to repost it there or let me know and I will.

In case you haven't heard of WWOOF, it is a great non profit organisation that lists organic farms and small holdings that want to have people come and volunteer with them and learn about organic agriculture in exchange for board and lodging. It was started in the UK in 1971 and there are now lots of WWOOF organisations all around the world (see http://wwoof.org for more details).

I am a director of WWOOF UK and am helping them choose a contractor for this work (otherwise I would probably be bidding for this myself).

And if you feel like some time away from your computer, I definitely recommend WWOOFing for a weekend/month/lifetime - it's pretty good fun.

London Web Week

Seven days of web design and development events, taking place in central London from 26th May to 1st June, 2008.

A not-for-profit scheme, the aim of London Web Week is to promote the events within it, to raise the profile of the web industry and community both within London and further afield, and to highlight best practices in web design such as accessibility considerations.

Conferences, workshops, social events and more will provide a range of educational and inspirational activities for web design enthusiasts of all levels, from beginners to professionals. The 10+ events will see big, established conferences side-by-side with numerous smaller events taking place in central London during the daytime and evenings.

LWW is an umbrella for each event which, with the exception of Web Roots, are autonomously run by independent individuals, communities, and companies. There is still room for more events and we encourage potential event organisers to get in touch. Please see the Participate page for more details.

London Web Week is organised by a committee made up of several of the organisers of the events within it. If you would like to contact us, please don’t hesitate to drop us an email at info@londonwebweek.co.uk

I think it would be awesome to have a UK drupalcon in 2009 or 2010. Does anyone have any ideas for where we could have it?

I talking to Warwick University about how much it would cost to hold it there (1200 delegates max.) but has anyone else got any ideas?

Would there be people to help out with the organisation of it, and willing to find sponsors etc?

Introductions

I thought it'd be perhaps good for us to introduce ourselves and see where people are, seeing as there 100+ members of the group.

I'm kelly, live in the midlands, near coventry. I'm reasonably new to drupal, not a developer (as in PHP), but build sites with it and enjoy working with it.

I hang out in the freenode #drupal-support IRC channel quite often, helping if I can.

I'm 29, currently not working, and have a number of interests, including music, science fiction/fantasy, history, reading, computing, gaming and crafts amongst other things.

I think that should do to start us off :)

Social Innovation Camp - London Drupal Drop-in April

The April Drupal Meetup in London will join with the first evening of Social Innovation Camp (http://sicamp.org). Come along and talk about how Drupal can help make the world a better place.

The camp is open to people from all faiths, so there will be some Joomla and Ruby types there. This will mean that talk will probably be a little more generic than usual, but it should still make for a very interesting night. Hey, why not hang around for the whole weekend.

Drupal themer | Hachette-Filipacchi Digital

The Digital team at Hachette-Filipacchi (UK) are currently running an alpha for a fun social-networking (Drupal-flash) application for teen magazine Sugar. We are actively seeking a ninja Drupal themer to help trouble shoot our Alpha by getting the theming right and the overall presentation layer as close to what has been designed.

This is a project which requires someone who can deliver, is willing to experiment various solutions, trouble shoot effectively and work colloboratively. If you think you fit the bill, please get in touch with Paul Edwards (HF-UK Digital Project Manager) at paul(dot)edwards(at)hf-uk(dot)com. You will be working closely with our Tech team of 2 primary Drupal developers and another CSS developer along with the creative director. We will be paying market competitive rates for the right kind of candidate.

The chosen candidate will be starting early next week (from 24th September) and the project will last for a minimum of 4 weeks.
Its a unique application and could be a great portfolio piece,
Looking forward to hear from you,

Priya Prakash
Meeting UK Drupalers at Drupalcon Barcelona...

I'll be in Barcelona next week for Drupalcon and I've got a few missions.

I've got 2 websites I want to look at converting to Drupal:

http://www.kendra.org.uk

Kendra Initiative is a non-profit organisation that wants to see a more open and level content distribution system/marktetplace. We need quotes for building it in Drupal. We've got a skeleton project plan here:

http://www.kendra.org.uk/wiki/wiki.pl?KendraWebsiteUpdate

Any pointers, comments and questions would be useful now so that I could have answers for next week when we can meet in the flesh and discuss more.

http://www.freewheelers.com

A well used website for organised hitching but needs a face lift.

Other issues that I'm interested in discussing:

Add Display Name field(s) to core in addition to Username
http://drupal.org/node/102679

Automated translation of node content via online translator
http://drupal.org/node/108004

Auto registration workflow
http://drupal.org/node/100359

Need more structure and funding model
http://groups.drupal.org/node/3704#comment-10822

Syncing calendars and cards with Drupal database. Not looked into this yet at all.

BTW I live down in the SW UK on Dartmoor and rarely make it to London. Next London stop is Kendra party on October 12th:

http://www.kendra.org.uk/wiki/wiki.pl?KendraParty20071012

Skype me on "dahacouk". Look forward to hooking up.

Cheers Daniel

United Kingdom

Themeing/webdeveloper | Droople

Ebay style, table search results with CKK fieds and listing thumbnail

I am working on a classified ad site,

I built a custom content-type called advert.

I have managed to build the listing views using views, image field and image cache

I want a custom search box with tabbed options to either search the advert-node-type only or the rest of the site. So it will look like this:

|search| (adverts)(help)

the two tabs will be adverts and help

searching with the adverts tab selected will render only advert-node-type content

searching with the help tab selected will render only page-node-type

Now for adverts search results, I want a table view like so (just like the ebay listings show up when you hit search)

image thumbnail | title | description| price | last updated

the CKK fields are as follows

image thumbnail --------- field_list_image

title -------------------- default node title

description ----------- field_subtitle

price (sortable) ------------------- field_price

last updated (sortable) ------------Node: Updated Time

Could anyone please help with a way of rendering search results in a table view.

To disuss prices, feel free to email me

thank you

I have just completed my penultimate year of University in the UK, where I'm resident. I have another year to go until I obtain my masters, but ideally would like to work on Drupal projects until the next academic year starts (October.)

At University I was given control of a website for The Mathematics Society, I looked around for a CMS and found Drupal. Since then I've reworked the entire site into Drupal, including many custom modules for simple ordering of clothing, remote membership list updating, custom OG solutions, Point Of Sale systems, mass emailing amongst others. I now also maintain the Drutex project on drupal.org, which adds a LaTeX input filter. You can view the site at http://warwickmaths.org

I have many years of experience with web technologies, and many years of working with the LAMP stack. I have good English skills and can communicate clearly and effectively.

If you have any custom modules that you need written or entire sites built, use my contact form to reach me.

My full CV is online at: http://aella.co.uk/CV.pdf

Regards
Steven Jones

Theming for fun and profit. | Hachette-Filipacchi

The Digital team at Hachette-Filipacchi (UK) are working on a cool rich internet application for their teen magazine Sugar which makes use of Drupal in new ways. We are actively seeking a ninja Drupal themer to help achieve our vision of creating a unique one of its social networking application by doing what it takes to get it there from hands-on coding to supporting and providing guidance to our Tech team of experienced Drupal & CSS developers.

This is a project which requires someone who can deliver under aggresive deadlines, is willing to experiment and work colloboratively over distributed teams. If you think you fit the bill, please get in touch with priya(dot)prakash(at)hf-uk(dot)com. You will be working alongside a team of Drupal developers, CSS designers, Lamp developers, and the creative team. We will be paying market competitive rates for the right kind of candidate.

The chosen candidate will be starting early next week and the project will last for 2-3 weeks( end of July, early August) Its preferable if the Drupal themer is avilable in UK. Having said that, we would live to work with ninjas wherever they are based.

North West Drupal Meetings

As far as I know the only UK Drupal meet-up appears to be in London. I've seen a few mentions of Drupal users being based in the midlands and north of the UK but wondered how many would actually be interested in a regular Drupal North meet-up?

Is Manchester central enough for such an event? It could be piggy backed on the existing web developer group meeting in the city centre.

Anyone know a good host for Drupal that offers exec() ?

Hi UK Drupallers

I am wanting to install the Image Enhanced Scaling module. The module developer says, "You'll find calls to exec() in both imagemagick.inc.php and image_enhanced_scaling.module."

I cannot run exec() on my existing host - it returns a "exec() has been disabled for security reasons" error. My host confirmed, "this is due to the way it works and the protection on the server. you need to change the ImageMagic to GD as this works fine with all image scripts I know."

I approached www.site5.com (a well-known Drupal host) who said they also do not allow calls to exec().

Does anyone have a good (fast) Drupal host that allows calls to exec() ?

Many thanks
Nigel
UK Science Fiction Community (and Drupal)

I am pushing Drupal as the "standard" CMS for doing Science Fiction Fan community websites in the UK. Although Fans like doing their own thing they can see the advantages of using something like Drupal and I've started with http://www.Eastercon.org/ and http://www.SFPoD.net/ (Science Fiction Picture of the Day)

Anyway - if there are Science Fiction fan Drupal users interested in helping out, or wanting help with their websites then give me a shout via the Drupal.org website or http://community.livejournal.com/gopherit/
